RESUMEN

Between May and October 1992, 374 sex workers comprising of 372 prostitutes and 2 homosexuals were examined for Pthirus pubis infestation. While none of the homosexuals was found to be infested, 52.69% of the prostitutes were infested with the highest and lowest infestation in the 40-49 year old group and 20-29 year old group respectively. The educational level was found to determine the extent of disease awareness among the sex workers. Questions are raised about the role of Pthirus pubis is AIDS transmission among sex workers.

RESUMEN

Blood samples from 522 children within the ages of 0-9 years attending maternal and child welfare clinics in northern Nigeria who were clinically diagnosed as being malarious were obtained for parasitological examination. Results revealed a parasite rate of 41%, density index of 7.72 and 19.5% of the population with parasite densities higher than the critical value of 10,000 parasites/mm3. There was no direct relationship between body temperature and rate of infection and between febrile illness and parasite density. Sex unlike age had no effect on the infection in the population. The study confirms that accurate diagnosis of malaria rests upon parasitological examination and not clinical acumen.

RESUMEN

Urine and faecal samples were obtained from 1,517 people in Fier, a typical rural village in Plateau State, Nigeria, for a parasitological survey among the population. 643 (42.39%) persons were found to be infected with altogether 9 helminths, namely: Ascaris lumbricoides, hookworm, Taenia sp., Trichuris trichiura, Enterobius vermicularis, Schistosoma mansoni, S. haematobium, Hymenolepis nana and Strongyloides stercoralis. Age and religion as opposed to sex, type of sewage system, and type of housing had a significant effect (P < 0.05) on the prevalence rates of the helminths in the population. Snail vector survey for schistosomatosis revealed the presence of Bulinus (Bulinus) truncatus, Bulinus (Physopsis) globosus and Biomphalaria pfeifferi with the latter being the most common with brevifurcate cercariae, and xiphidiocercariae being the most common cercariae harboured by the snails.
