RESUMEN

The article presents research on using the adsorption process of aldrin (a chloro-organic pesticide that most often occurs in the environment near expired pesticide burials). The research used three sorbents: two activated carbons and compost from sewage sludge as a low-cost sorbent. Obtained adsorption isotherms belong to the L group according to the Giles classification. The test results and their analysis confirm that the IZO application facilitates the analysis of the adsorption process. The study results also confirm that compost can be a cost-effective alternative to commercial activated carbons to build barriers protecting the environment against existing leaking expired pesticide burials.

RESUMEN

The purpose of this paper is to present the IZO application that calculates and visualizes coefficients of adsorption isotherms according to Freundlich, Langmuir, and BET in a classic and linear system, in a simple communicative way. The application also calculates the working time of the adsorption bed based on the transformation of the mass balance equation, and according to the Zuchowicki, Zabiezinski, Tichonow, and the Bohart-Adams equations. The laboratory tests of the adsorption process of leachate from a municipal landfill on selected active coals ORGANOSORB 10, DESOTEK, and BA-10, were conducted to check the program for accuracy. Results of tests confirm that the linearization method of the calculation of adsorption isotherms coefficients, used in the IZO application, gives sufficient accuracy and may be used as an alternative of, e.g., the nonlinear estimation method.

RESUMEN

The aim of the study was to assess the physicochemical properties of compost made of municipal sewage sludge from selected Municipal Sewage Treatment Plant. Content of basic macroelements and heavy metals (Zn, Cu, Cr, Cd, Ni, Pb, Hg, Mg, Ca, N, P, K, Na) and their fractions was determined by means of BCR method. Based on the analyzes, it was found that the content of heavy metals in compost did not exceed the limits set by natural land management of sewage sludge; the compost is very abundant in biogenic elements - nitrogen and phosphorus - and it can be also considered a significant source of calcium and magnesium. The analysis of results obtained from the three-stage chemical extraction revealed that deposits subjected to aerobic stabilization and composting accumulate metals (in descending sequence) in fractions III and II, i.e. fractions virtually inaccessible to the ecosystem in optimal conditions of use.

RESUMEN

This paper presents research on phenoxyacid pesticides removal using sorption methods on activated carbons. It was noted, that physico-chemical properties of adsorbent and adsorbate as well as parameters of the process have influence on adsorption of pesticides, derivatives of phenoxyacetic acid on carbon. The experimental data were analyzed by the Freundlich isotherm. The best for remove from water on carbon NP-5 was 2,4-D. Equilibrium data fitted well with the Freundlich model with maximum adsorption capacity of NP-5 carbon. The exemplary sorption capacity at equilibrium concentration 10 mg L(-1) were: 2,4-D 70 mg g(-1), MCPA 2 mg g(-1), MCPP 0.5 mg g(-1). The results indicated that coconut shell-based NP-5 carbon is most effective for the adsorption of phenoxyacetic acid from aqueous solutions.
