RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Of occupational diseases, although skin is a commonly affected site, skin diseases are rarely reported and have been poorly compensated in the past due to their relatively low morbidity rate. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to analyze the characteristics of occupational skin diseases compensated by the Industrial Accident Compensation Insurance which is managed by the Korea Labor Welfare Corporation (KLWC). METHOD: Using the KLWC database, we selected 216 cases of occupational skin diseases which had been compensated between 1 January 1999 and 31 December 2003. We analyzed the characteristics (sex, age, type of occupational disease, exposure material, type of industry and occupation, etc.) of occupational diseases, using data from the KLWC records and from cases that had been investigated by the Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency (KOSHA). RESULTS: 216 cases were compensated by the KLWC, with men accounting for 76.4% (165 cases) of the cases. The most common age group was 50-59 years of age (n=73, 33.8%). The majority of diseases were contact dermatitis (116 cases, 53.7%), cellulitis (36 cases, 16.7%), leukoderma (11 cases, 5.7%), urticaria (9 cases, 4.2%) and scabies (7 cases, 3.2%). The causal hazardous agents of 147 cases were plants (72 cases, 49.0%), chemicals (32 cases, 21.8%), drugs (7 cases, 4.8%) and oils and greases (5 cases, 3.4%). The major types of industry were public administration and defence (91 cases, 42.1%), manufacturing (57 cases, 27.1%), other community, repair and personal service activities (13 cases, 6.0%), construction (12 cases, 5.6%) and business activities (11 cases, 5.1%). The type of occupation included elementary occupations (115 cases, 53.2%), craft and related trades workers (30 cases, 13.9%), plant and machine operators and assemblers (20 cases, 9.3%) and service workers (18 cases, 8.3%). CONCLUSION: From this study, we were able to elucidate the kind of occupational skin diseases and the characteristics of workers. Many of the compensated cases belonged to daily-paid workers in the public service, especially forestry care workers. The most commonly occurring disease was allergic contact dermatitis. This suggests that a management policy must be established to prevent occupational skin diseases occurring among workers in the above types of industry. Also, this study suggests that more research needs to be conducted to elucidate the relationship between exposure to hazardous agents and occupational skin diseases such as occupational skin cancers, leukoderma and trichloroethylene induced Stevens-Johnson Syndrome.

RESUMEN

Deep palmoplantar warts(myrmecia) represent lesions of the DNA virus of the papova group, human papillomavirus, serotype 1(HPV-1). They are occur not only on the palms and soles, but also on the lateral aspects and tips of the fingers and toes. Herein we report a case of deep palmoplantar wart on proximal nail fold of right index finger in a 6 year old male.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: This study was carried out to estimate the magnitude of skin disease related to occupation and to find out the characteristics of it. METHODS: We collected and analyzed the cases of occupational skin disease reported by surveillance system composed of doctors and nurses in 150 enterprises with dispensary or attached hospital and physicians in 92 specific health examination institutes and 150 dermatologists from May to November, 1998. RESULTS: Among members of surveillance system, 66 enterprises and 47 specific health examination institutes and 55 dermatologists reported 571 cases of occupational skin disease in 512 workers. Excepting 81 cases reported by dermatologists, We analyzed 490 cases reported by enterprises and specific health examination institutes. Among 490 cases, contact dermatitis was most common(368 cases, 75.1%) and the second was hyper or hypopigmentation(36 cases, 7.3%). When we analyzed the characteristics of workers with occupational contact dermatitis, male workers were 281(79.2%) and female were 74(20.8%). 165 workers(64.5%) had chronic skin disease with repeated cure and relapse. 245 workers(72.5%) answered positively that their coworkers had similar skin disease. 27 workers(8.7%) experienced absence due to contact dermatitis related to occupation. To analyze the type of industries of workers with occupational contact dermatitis, automobile and trailer manufacturing industry was most common(105 cases, 29.6%) and the second was manufacturing industry for image, sound and communication equipment(55 cases, 15.5%). Organic solvent(183 cases, 46.7%) was the most common treating material of workers with contact dermatitis and the second was various kinds of chemicals(59cases, 15.1%). CONCLUSIONS: This is the first study using nationwide surveillance system to collect data of occupational skin disease. We found that many workers had skin disease related to occupation and characteristics of occupational skin disease were chronic and clustering. Therefore, we had to establish counterplan to manage occupational skin disease and to operate surveillance system to identify trends of occupational skin disease, continuously.

RESUMEN

The prevalence of latex allergies has been on the increase along with the greater use of rubber products in daily life, medical, dental and occupational settings. Allergic reactions to latex can take two clinical forms of either contact dermatitis or immediate hypersensitivity reactions, which are provoked by the natural latex proteins or chemical additives used in the manufacturing process, respectively. A 25-year-old female, an operating room nurse, complained of recurrent pruritic erythematous wheals on both hands after the wearing of latex rubber gloves. The prick test and the usage Mlit't to the latex gloves were positive, and the RAST was class 3. To the best of our knowledge, is the first case report of contact urticaria from latex rubber gloves in Korean dermatologic literature.

RESUMEN

Reconstruction of the middle ear conduction mechanism continues to pose a significant challenge to the otolaryngologist. To investigate the suitable material and surgical method to get optimal hearing gain in the middle ear surgery, two hundred and twenty-two cases of different kind of ossiculoplasty in patients suffering from chronic middle ear disease at the Severance hospital and Soh's ENT clinic from January 1989 to December 1994 were included in this retrospective study and we reviewed the previous reports about the ossiculoplasty at the department of otolaryngology, Yonsei University College of Medicine from January 1981 to December 1988. A successful hearing gain was defined as a post-operative air-bone gap of
