RESUMEN

Bungarus Parvus, a precious animal Chinese medicinal material used in clinical practice, is believed to be first recorded in Ying Pian Xin Can published in 1936. This study was carried out to analyze the names, geographical distribution, morphological characteristics, ecological habits, poisonousness, and medicinal parts by consulting ancient Chinese medical books and local chronicles, Chinese Pharmacopeia, different processing standards of trditional Chinese medicine(TCM) decoction pieces, and modern literatures. The results showed that the earliest medicinal record of Bungarus Parvus was traced to 1894. In 1930, this medicinal material was used in the formulation of Annao Pills. The original animal, Bungarus multicinctus, was recorded by the name of "Bojijia" in 1521. The morphological characteristics, ecological habits, and poisonousness of the original animal are the same in ancient and modern records. The geographical distribution is similar between the ancient records and modern documents such as China Medicinal Animal Fauna. The dried body of young B. multicinctus is used as Bungarus Parvus, which lack detailed references. As a matter of fact, it is still inconclusive whether there are differences between young snakes and adult snakes in terms of active ingredients, pharmacological effects, and clinical applications. This study clarified the medicinal history and present situation of Bungarus Parvus. On the basis of the results, it is suggested that systematic comparison on young and adult B. multicinctus should be carried out to provide references for revising the medicinal parts of B. multicinctus.

The abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB) is complex and usually leads to severe anemia. Melastomadodecandrum (MD) is clinically used for the treatment of metrorrhagia bleeding. The MD ellagitannins (MD-ETs) had been evidenced being effective at hemorrhage, and exerts biological activities upon their metabolites including ellagic acid and urolithins. In this study, the blood-permeated metabolites from theMD-ETs were analyzed using LC-MS approach, and 19 metabolites including ellagic acid and urolithin A derivatives were identified. Furthermore, a network pharmacology analysis including the target prediction analysis, AUB target analysis, Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analysis were conducted to reveal the relationships between "metabolites-targets-pathways", which was further verified by molecular docking analysis. The results showed that methyl ellagic acid, urolithin A and isourolithin A produced from MD-ETs can be absorbed into the blood, and might act on the core targets of VEGFA, SRC, MTOR, EGFR and CCND1. And the hemostatic effects were exerted through PI3K-Akt, endocrine resistance and Rap 1 signaling pathways. These results implied the potential effective constituents and action mechanism of MD-ETs in the therapy of AUB, which will promote the application of MD-ETs as natural agent for the treatment of gynecological bleeding diseases.

Ellagic acid (EA) is a dietary polyphenol that widely exists in grapes, strawberries, and walnuts. It usually exerts multiple biological activities together with its in vivo metabolites called urolithins. EA and urolithins had been proposed as natural agents for applying on the early intervention of Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, the neuroprotective effects of those small molecules have not been confirmed, and the action mechanism is not clear. Deposition of beta-amyloid (Aß) protein is well documented as being involved in the initiation and pathological process of AD. In the present study, we investigated the attenuating effects of EA and several urolithins on Aß25-35-induced neuronal injury and its underlying molecular mechanism by constructing the in vitro AD cell model of PC12 cells and primary neurons. The results revealed that EA and urolithins especially the UM5 and UM6 exerted promising neuroprotective effects in improving the Aß25-35-induced cell damage and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) leakage, reducing reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, inhibiting neuronal apoptosis, and promoting neurite outgrowth. These results provide new insights into the development of UM5 and UM6 as anti-AD candidates. A network pharmacology analysis combining molecular docking strategy was further adopted to predict the signaling pathway involved in the anti-AD action of EA and urolithins, and the activation of PI3K-Akt, as well as the inhibition of MAPK was found to be involved.

Clerodendrum cyrtophyllum is a well-known medicinal plant in southern China. Here, we presented the complete chloroplast (cp) genome of C. cyrtophyllum using Illumina high-throughput sequencing technology. The C. cyrtophyllum cp genome size is 152,004 bp with 38.13% GC content, including a pair of inverted repeat regions (IR, 51,592 bp) separated by a large single copy (LSC, 86,480 bp) and a small single copy region (SSC, 18,425 bp). It possesses 87 protein-coding genes, 37 tRNA genes and eight rRNA genes. Phylogenetic analysis fully shows that C. cyrtophyllum is closely related to Clerodendrum bungei and Clerodendrum lindleyi. Overall, the complete cp genome sequence of C. cyrtophyllum provides a valuable resource for genetic diversity, phylogenetic relationship, and species identification.

BACKGROUND: Luofushan-Baicao Oil (LBO) is an essential oil-rich traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formula that is commonly used to treat cold, cough, headache, sore throat, swelling, and pain. However, the anti-influenza activities of LBO and the underlying mechanism remain to be investigated. METHODS: The in vitro anti-influenza activity of LBO was tested with methyl thiazolyl tetrazolium (MTT) and plaque assays. The effects of LBO on the expressions of viral nucleoprotein and cytokines were evaluated. In the polyinosinic-polycytidylic acid- (Poly I: C-) induced inflammation model, the influences of LBO on the expression of cytokines and the activation of NF-κB P65 (P65) and interferon regulatory factor 3 (IRF3) were tested. After influenza A virus (IVA) infection, mice were administered with LBO for 5 days. The lung index, histopathologic change, the expression of viral protein, P65, and IRF3 in the lung tissue were measured. The levels of proinflammatory cytokines in serum were examined. RESULTS: In vitro, LBO could significantly inhibit the infection of IVA, decrease the formation of plaques, and reduce the expression of viral nucleoprotein and cytokines. LBO could also effectively downregulate the expression of interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and interferon-ß and the activation of P65 and IRF3 in Poly I:C-treated cells. In the IVA-infected mice model, inhalation of LBO with atomizer could decrease the lung index, alleviate the pathological injury in the lung tissue, and reduce the serum levels of IL-1ß and IL-6. LBO could significantly downregulate the expression of viral protein (nucleoprotein, PB2, and matrix 2 ion channel) and the phosphorylation of P65 and IRF3 in the lungs of mice. CONCLUSION: The therapeutic effects of LBO on treating influenza might result from the regulation of the immune response of IVA infection. LBO can be developed as an alternative therapeutic agent for influenza prevention.

Dryobalanops aromatica is a new species in the family of Lauraceae with high content of D-borneol, which is an important raw material of premium spices and medicine widely used in China. The genome and the molecular phylogenetic relation of this novel species had not been analyzed before. In this study, we present the complete sequence of chloroplast genome of D. aromatic, as well as its genome annotation. The complete chloroplast sequences in length were 152,696 bp, with two single-copy regions 93,610 bp and 18,902 bp in length, which were separated by two inverted repeat regions with 20,092 bp in length. In total, 128 genes were predicted with GC content at 39.16%. Phylogenetic analysis showed that D. aromatica is closest to Gossypium sturtianum in Lauraceae. The sequence and annotation of the chloroplast genome of Dryobalanops aromatic will be useful for further studies on the taxonomy in Lauraceae.

Continuous monitoring of variations in blood flow is vital in assessing the status of microvascular and macrovascular beds for a wide range of clinical and research scenarios. Although a variety of techniques exist, most require complete immobilization of the subject, thereby limiting their utility to hospital or clinical settings. Those that can be rendered in wearable formats suffer from limited accuracy, motion artifacts, and other shortcomings that follow from an inability to achieve intimate, noninvasive mechanical linkage of sensors with the surface of the skin. We introduce an ultrathin, soft, skin-conforming sensor technology that offers advanced capabilities in continuous and precise blood flow mapping. Systematic work establishes a set of experimental procedures and theoretical models for quantitative measurements and guidelines in design and operation. Experimental studies on human subjects, including validation with measurements performed using state-of-the-art clinical techniques, demonstrate sensitive and accurate assessment of both macrovascular and microvascular flow under a range of physiological conditions. Refined operational modes eliminate long-term drifts and reduce power consumption, thereby providing steps toward the use of this technology for continuous monitoring during daily activities.
