RESUMEN

A mortality rate of 30% as a result of the sudden death syndrome was recorded in point of lay broiler breeders fed on an all vegetable protein ration designed to induce this condition. No mortalities were recorded in birds fed on an all vegetable protein control ration. Plasma potassium concentrations were inversely related to mortality rate. These rations seem to be suitable ones on which to base further research on the sudden death syndrome.

RESUMEN

Plasma samples were taken from a normal broiler breeder flock during the period 10 to 60 weeks of age. Plasma potassium concentration was variable during maturation, reaching the lowest value at 26 weeks of age. Plasma sodium concentration also declined but with the lowest value at 20 weeks of age.

RESUMEN

Sudden death syndrome in broiler breeders at the point of lay was a serious problem in Australia for 18 months. This condition was reproduced by a combination of dietary and management practices. Chickens fed a diet low in potassium, phosphorus, protein, and energy had plasma potassium and phosphorus levels significantly lower than the levels seen in the controls. The plasma values of the test breeders were similar to levels seen in field cases. There was a significant difference (P less than 0.01) in the venous acid-base balance between the test chickens and controls. Test chickens were alkalotic and had a 6% mortality rate between 18 and 30 weeks of age.

RESUMEN

Syringomyelia was present in 3 of 6 pigs examined in an outbreak of disease in which a respiratory and an ataxic syndrome were recognized. Lesions were found in cervical spinal cord segments in pigs 3 to 5 months old. The aetiology was not determined.
