RESUMEN

ETIOLOGY: Helminth infestation of the digestive tract or organ tissues is a common and curable cause of high eosinophil counts. Parasite infestation should be the number one suspect in patients with hypereosinophilia. DIAGNOSIS: Clinical signs and epidemiology are suggestive. If the patient has travelled to the tropics, one should consider both exotic and cosmopolite parasites. LABORATORY TESTS: The causal agent can sometimes be identified by direct examination of tissue samples, depending on the localization. In practice however identification may be a difficult task when the level of infestation is low or the helminth is in a larval stage. The epidemiological situation, clinical features and results of serology tests must all be considered for diagnosis. ANTIHELMINTH TREATMENT (TEST): Clinical improvement after treatment can be a criteria for positive diagnosis. Normal eosinophil counts followed later by normal serology confirms the diagnosis.

RESUMEN

We have identified the first French cases of cyanobacterium-like bodies (CLB) or cyclosporidia in the feces of two immunocompetent patients who presented with a persistent diarrheal syndrome after a visit to India and Nepal.1 We take this opportunity to review the available data on this new microorganism.

RESUMEN

In the present case report a 50-year-old woman is presented with a Strongyloides stercoralis infection after a one-month stay in Sri Lanka. She showed a severe involvement of the central nervous system without a correlation of an immunosuppression. Strongyloides stercoralis is regarded as the cause of the cerebral involvement. Other possible causes are also discussed.

RESUMEN

1,000 refugees living in Strasbourg have had a stoll parasitologic exam between 1986 and 1990. We have not retained results of South America and other areas of Asia subjects because of their scarce total number. Proportionally, the most numerous are the South East Asia Nationals (51.7%); followed by those from Middle East and Africa (20 and 15.5%) and more recently by those from East of Europe (5.2%). Their parasitic infestation's rate remains important (60.9%) but variable depending on their origin. Thus, people coming from Middle East and Africa are parasited mainly by protozoan, although those from South East Asia are parasited by helminths. It's interesant to notify that the prevalence of D. fragilis is ten times higher among East European people than in the common people.

RESUMEN

Cryptosporidium sp is a new enteric pathogenic organism which is responsible for self-limited acute diarrhea in infants. During a prospective study we diagnosed the first pediatric cases of cryptosporidiosis in Strasbourg. This leads us to recommend that cryptosporidiosis be looked for in the etiological diagnosis of infantile diarrhea.

RESUMEN

Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia is one of these opportunistic infections that are so frequently observed in immunodepressed patients. The usual radiological image is one of interstitial pneumonia. We report the case of a misleading and unusual pseudotumoral form in a female patient with non-Hodgkin malignant lymphoma. The course of the pneumonia was favourable after cotrimoxazole therapy, partial surgical resection and prophylaxis of relapses by inhaled pentamidine.

RESUMEN

The authors described a 6 years old boy suffering from acute lymphoblastic leukemia and treated by the B.F.M. protocol who presented during intensive chemotherapy period a aspergillus renal abscess apparently unique. During the postoperative period the evolution was progressively favorable under prolonged anti-fungal treatment. The different clinical features, the non facilities of diagnosis and the mean possibility of treatment in aspergillus infection in immunodeficient patients are reviewed.
