RESUMEN

CD34-positive dermal fibromas (PDFs) are cutaneous neoplasms that display a characteristic pattern of superficial dermal spindle cell proliferation on histopathology evaluation. They are clinically heterogenous in presentation and thought to follow a benign course. CD34-PDFs have features that overlap with dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP), a locally aggressive low-grade superficial sarcoma. Cytogenetic studies are essential to distinguish the two. This report presents the case of a 38-year-old female with a CD34-PDF on the right antecubital fossa.

RESUMEN

Sexual and reproductive health (SRH) care is often overlooked in advanced practice nursing educational programs, but advanced practice registered nurses are expected to provide care in this sensitive area. Competencies for SRH care were developed by the World Health Organization, and individual countries including the United States have adapted them to their unique health systems and populations. In this article, we discuss extant and future pathways for advanced practice registered nurses to develop competence in SRH care.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: To identify the essential competencies for prevention and care related to unintended pregnancy to develop program outcomes for nursing curricula. DESIGN: Modified Delphi study. SETTING: National. PARTICIPANTS: Eighty-five nurse experts, including academic faculty and advanced practice nurses providing sexual and reproductive health care in primary or specialty care settings. METHODS: Expert panelists completed a three-round Delphi study using an electronic survey. RESULTS: Eighty-five panelists completed the first round survey, and 72 panelists completed all three rounds. Twenty-seven items achieved consensus of at least 75% of the experts by the third round to comprise the educational competencies. CONCLUSION: Through an iterative process, experts in prevention and care related to unintended pregnancy reached consensus on 27 core educational competencies for nursing education. The competencies provide a framework for curricular development in an important area of nursing education.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: A core competency model for family planning public health nurses has been developed, using a three stage Delphi Method with an expert panel of 40 family planning senior administrators, community/public health nursing faculty and seasoned family planning public health nurses. DESIGN AND SAMPLE: The initial survey was developed from the 2011 Title X Family Planning program priorities. The 32-item survey was distributed electronically via SurveyMonkey(®). RESULTS: Panelist attrition was low, and participation robust resulting in the final 28-item model, suggesting that the Delphi Method was a successful technique through which to achieve consensus. CONCLUSIONS: Competencies with at least 75% consensus were included in the model and those competencies were primarily related to education/counseling and administration of medications and contraceptives. The competencies identified have implications for education/training, certification and workplace performance.

RESUMEN

Nurses must be prepared to participate in the evolving National Health Information Infrastructure and the changes that will consequently occur in health care practice and documentation. Informatics technologies will be used to develop electronic health records with integrated decision support features that will likely lead to enhanced health care quality and safety. This paper provides a summary of the National Health Information Infrastructure and highlights electronic health records and decision support systems within the context of evidence-based practice. Activities at the Columbia University School of Nursing designed to prepare nurses with the necessary informatics competencies to practice in a National Health Information Infrastructure-enabled health care system are described. Data are presented from electronic (personal digital assistant) encounter logs used in our Women's Health Nurse Practitioner program to support evidence-based advanced practice nursing care. Implications for nursing practice, education, and research in the evolving National Health Information Infrastructure are discussed.
