RESUMEN

Dibromoethane is a widespread, persistent organic pollutant. Biochars are known mediators of reductive dehalogenation by layered FeII-FeIII hydroxides (green rust), which can reduce 1,2-dibromoethane to innocuous bromide and ethylene. However, the critical characteristics that determine mediator functionality are lesser known. Fifteen biochar substrates were pyrolyzed at 600 °C and 800 °C, characterized by elemental analysis, X-ray photo spectrometry C and N surface speciation, X-ray powder diffraction, specific surface area analysis, and tested for mediation of reductive debromination of 1,2-dibromoethane by a green rust reductant under anoxic conditions. A statistical analysis was performed to determine the biochar properties, critical for debromination kinetics and total debromination extent. It was shown that selected plant based biochars can mediate debromination of 1,2-dibromoethane, that the highest first order rate constant was 0.082/hr, and the highest debromination extent was 27% in reactivity experiments with 0.1 µmol (20 µmol/L) 1,2-dibromoethane, ≈ 22 mmol/L FeIIGR, and 0.12 g/L soybean meal biochar (7 days). Contents of Ni, Zn, N, and P, and the relative contribution of quinone surface functional groups were significantly (p < 0.05) positively correlated with 1,2-dibromoethane debromination, while adsorption, specific surface area, and the relative contribution of pyridinic N oxide surface groups were significantly negatively correlated with debromination.

Release of radionuclides to the environment from either nuclear weapon and fuel cycles or from naturally occurring radionuclides (NORM) may cause long term contamination of aquatic ecosystems and chronic exposure of living organisms to ionizing radiation, which in turn could lead to adverse effects compromising the sustainability of populations. To address the effects of chronic ionizing radiation on the development of fish, Atlantic salmon embryos were exposed from fertilization until hatching (88 days, 550 day-degree) to dose rates from 1 to 30 mGy·h-1 gamma radiation (60Co). The lowest adopted dose rate was similar to the highest doses measured in some water bodies right after the Chernobyl accident (1 mGy·h-1), however, well above current environmentally realistic scenarios (20 µGy·h-1), or the threshold assumed for significant effects on fish population (40 µGy·h-1). Dose dependent effects were observed on survival, hatching, morbidity, DNA damage, antioxidant defenses, and metabolic status. Histopathological analysis showed dose rate dependent impairment of eye and brain tissues development and establishment of epidermal mucus cell layers accompanied by increased DNA damage at doses ≥1.3 Gy (dose rates ≥1 mGy·h-1). At ≥32.8 Gy (dose rates ≥20 mGy·h-1) deformities and developmental growth defects resulted in respective 46 and 95 % pre-hatch mortality. The 10 mGy·h-1 exposure (≥ 12 Gy total dose) caused significantly increased DNA damage, impaired eye development, and both premature and delayed hatching, while no deformities or effect on survival were observed. We observed a dose rate dependent reduction from dose rate ≥ 20 mGy·h-1 (≥ 27 Gy total dose) on antioxidant SOD, catalase and glutathione reductase enzyme activities. The reduction of antioxidant enzyme activities was in line with observed developmental delay and disturbance to time of hatching. Metabolomic profiles showed a clear shift at dose rates ≥10 mGy·h-1 (≥ 12 Gy total dose) in pathways related to oxidative stress, detoxification, DNA damage and repair. Due to gamma radiation exposure, a switch of central metabolism from glycolysis, citric acid cycle and lactate production towards pentose phosphate pathway indicated a rewiring mechanism for increased production of reductive equivalents to maintain redox homeostasis at the expense of energy output and thus embryonic development.

Objective: To describe the profile of Streptococcus pneumoniae, identify research gaps, and provide in-depth insights into various aspects related to the pathogen. Methods: Google Scholar, PubMed, and ScienceDirect were searched for all studies on the pneumococcus in Ghana that reported on specimen collected, population and sample size, carriage prevalence, incidence of pneumococcal diseases, age of the study population, types of test performed, serotypes identified, antimicrobial susceptibilities, or molecular analysis on the pneumococci for data extraction. Results: Overall, a total of 7954 results were obtained from the three-database search, and of this, 24 articles were selected after screening. A total of 924 isolates were accounted for by serotyping/serogrouping. The prevalence of pneumococcal carriage in Ghana ranges from 11.0% to 51.4% in the population depending on the age (≤ 24-80 years), sickle cell disease (SCD), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) status, or health of the study population, and penicillin (Pen)-nonsusceptible isolates ranged from 17% to 63%. The prevalence of pneumococci found as the etiologic agent of diseases among Ghanaians ranges from 3.4% for otitis media to 77.7% for meningitis. Overall, the 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) (PCV-13) carriage serotypes accounted for 28.4% of the reported pneumococcal isolates. PCV-13 invasive serotypes accounted for 22.4% of the reported isolates. The non-PCV-13 carriage serotypes accounted for most (43.9%) of the reported isolates. In the pre-PCV-13 era, the nontypeable (NT) (5.5%) and other nonvaccine types (NVTs) (6.4%) were reported as being predominant. The non-PCV-13 serotypes accounted for 4.4% of the reported isolates in invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) cases. Multidrug resistance (MDR) ranged from 7.8% to 100%. Conclusion: Predicting the invasiveness of pneumococci using molecular typing is the way to go in the future as this will provide answers to the extent to which capsular switching is contributing to the pneumococcal disease burden in Ghana almost a decade after introducing PCV-13. Continuous monitoring of antibiotic resistance patterns at both phenotypic and genotypic levels, along with serotyping and molecular typing, should be a standard practice in the surveillance of pneumococcal disease burden in Ghana.

Background: Sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors have been shown to reduce rates of heart failure hospitalisations and cardiovascular death in patients with type 2 diabetes and prior cardiovascular disease. We hypothesised that SGLT2 inhibitors could provide cardiovascular benefits in the post-myocardial infarction setting. We aimed to investigate cardiovascular outcomes of SGLT2 inhibitor therapy in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus after myocardial infarction in a Swedish nationwide registry. Methods: We included all patients with type 2 diabetes surviving a type 1 acute myocardial infarction from January 1, 2018 to December 31, 2021. Patients were included if they were discharged with an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) > 30 mL/min/1.73 m2 in the nationwide Swedish Web-system for Enhancement and Development of Evidence-based care in Heart disease Evaluated According to Recommended Therapies (SWEDEHEART) registry. We identified all patients discharged with or without an SGLT2 inhibitor prescription 120 days before or within three days after discharge from the cardiac care unit. The primary outcome measure was a composite of death and first hospitalisation for heart failure after one year analysed using an adjusted Cox regression. Findings: A total of 11,271 patients were included. Of these, 2498 (22.2%) received SGLT2 inhibitor treatment. Patients who were prescribed SGLT2 inhibitors were younger, more often presented with a STEMI and had worse left ventricular ejection fraction at index hospitalisation. SGLT2 inhibitor use was associated with lower rates of the composite outcome (hazard ratio (HR) of 0.70 (95% confidence interval (CI) 0.59-0.82). Interpretation: Treatment with SGLT2 inhibitors after myocardial infarction in patients with type 2 diabetes was associated with a lower rate of cardiovascular events. Several microbiome studies have recently demonstrated microbial dysbiosis in various chronic inflammatory skin diseases, and it is considered an important role in the pathogenesis. Although the role of skin dysbiosis in inflammatory skin diseases is debatable, the local microenvironment is considered essential concerning compositional changes and functional alterations of the skin microbiota. Indeed, various local nutrients (e.g., lipids), pH values, water, oxygen, and antimicrobial peptides may affect the level of skin dysbiosis in these skin diseases. In particular, in atopic dermatitis and hidradenitis suppurativa, significant changes in skin dysbiosis have been associated with local aberrant host immune changes. In this review, the potential pathogenic crosstalk between the host and the microbiota is reviewed in relation to the physical, chemical, and biological microenvironments of various chronic inflammatory skin diseases.

BACKGROUND: FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources) has been proposed to enable health data interoperability. So far, its applicability has been demonstrated for selected research projects with limited data. OBJECTIVE: Here, we designed and implemented a conceptual medical intelligence framework to leverage real-world care data for clinical decision-making. METHODS: A Python package for the utilization of multimodal FHIR data (FHIRPACK) was developed and pioneered in five real-world clinical use cases, i.e., myocardial infarction (MI), stroke, diabetes, sepsis, and prostate cancer (PC). Patients were identified based on ICD-10 codes, and outcomes were derived from laboratory tests, prescriptions, procedures, and diagnostic reports. Results were provided as browser-based dashboards. RESULTS: For 2022, 1,302,988 patient encounters were analyzed. MI: In 72.7% of cases (N=261) medication regimens fulfilled guideline recommendations. Stroke: Out of 1,277 patients, 165 patients received thrombolysis and 108 thrombectomy. Diabetes: In 443,866 serum glucose and 16,180 HbA1c measurements from 35,494 unique patients, the prevalence of dysglycemic findings was 39% (N=13,887). Among those with dysglycemia, diagnosis was coded in 44.2% (N=6,138) of the patients. Sepsis: In 1,803 patients, Staphylococcus epidermidis was the primarily isolated pathogen (N=773, 28.9%) and piperacillin/tazobactam was the primarily prescribed antibiotic (N=593, 37.2%). PC: Three out of 54 patients who received radical prostatectomy were identified as cases with PSA persistence or biochemical recurrence. CONCLUSIONS: Leveraging FHIR data through large-scale analytics can enhance healthcare quality and improve patient outcomes across five clinical specialties. We identified i) sepsis patients requiring less broad antibiotic therapy, ii) patients with myocardial infarction who could benefit from statin and antiplatelet therapy, iii) stroke patients with longer than recommended times to intervention, iv) patients with hyperglycemia who could benefit from specialist referral and v) PC patients with early increases in cancer markers.

Opportunistic plant records provide a rapidly growing source of spatiotemporal plant observation data. Here, we used such data to explore the question whether they can be used to detect changes in species phenologies. Examining 19 herbaceous and one woody plant species in two consecutive years across Europe, we observed significant shifts in their flowering phenology, being more pronounced for spring-flowering species (6-17 days) compared to summer-flowering species (1-6 days). Moreover, we show that these data are suitable to model large-scale relationships such as "Hopkins' bioclimatic law" which quantifies the phenological delay with increasing elevation, latitude, and longitude. Here, we observe spatial shifts, ranging from -5 to 50 days per 1000 m elevation to latitudinal shifts ranging from -1 to 4 days per degree northwards, and longitudinal shifts ranging from -1 to 1 day per degree eastwards, depending on the species. Our findings show that the increasing volume of purely opportunistic plant observation data already provides reliable phenological information, and therewith can be used to support global, high-resolution phenology monitoring in the face of ongoing climate change.

Serial crystallography (SX) involves combining observations from a very large number of diffraction patterns coming from crystals in random orientations. To compile a complete data set, these patterns must be indexed (i.e. their orientation determined), integrated and merged. Introduced here is TORO (Torch-powered robust optimization) Indexer, a robust and adaptable indexing algorithm developed using the PyTorch framework. TORO is capable of operating on graphics processing units (GPUs), central processing units (CPUs) and other hardware accelerators supported by PyTorch, ensuring compatibility with a wide variety of computational setups. In tests, TORO outpaces existing solutions, indexing thousands of frames per second when running on GPUs, which positions it as an attractive candidate to produce real-time indexing and user feedback. The algorithm streamlines some of the ideas introduced by previous indexers like DIALS real-space grid search [Gildea, Waterman, Parkhurst, Axford, Sutton, Stuart, Sauter, Evans & Winter (2014). Acta Cryst. D70, 2652-2666] and XGandalf [Gevorkov, Yefanov, Barty, White, Mariani, Brehm, Tolstikova, Grigat & Chapman (2019). Acta Cryst. A75, 694-704] and refines them using faster and principled robust optimization techniques which result in a concise code base consisting of less than 500 lines. On the basis of evaluations across four proteins, TORO consistently matches, and in certain instances outperforms, established algorithms such as XGandalf and MOSFLM [Powell (1999). Acta Cryst. D55, 1690-1695], occasionally amplifying the quality of the consolidated data while achieving superior indexing speed. The inherent modularity of TORO and the versatility of PyTorch code bases facilitate its deployment into a wide array of architectures, software platforms and bespoke applications, highlighting its prospective significance in SX.

Penicillin is available in both an oral (penicillin V) and intravenous formulation (penicillin G), theoretically allowing for a safe transition between the two. However, the use of oral penicillin remains a topic of debate due to low and variable bioavailability. This study aimed to assess the time for which the free penicillin concentration exceeded targeted minimum inhibitory concentrations for Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus species (0.125, 0.25, and 0.5 mg/L) in cancellous bone and subcutaneous tissue after intravenous penicillin and oral penicillin administration. 12 female pigs (68-75 kg) were assigned, according to local standard clinical regimes, to either intravenous penicillin (1.2 g) or oral penicillin (0.8 g) treatment every 6 h over an 18 h period. Microdialysis catheters were placed for sampling in tibial cancellous bone and adjacent subcutaneous tissue. Data was dynamic/continually collected in the first dosing interval (0-6 h), simulating a prophylactic situation, and the third dosing interval (12-18 h), simulating a therapeutic setting. Plasma samples were collected for reference. For all investigated targets, intravenous treatment resulted in a longer mean time above relevant minimum inhibitory concentrations in cancellous bone during the first dosing interval, and in both cancellous bone and subcutaneous tissue during the third dosing interval compared to oral treatment. With clinically relevant dosing, intravenous penicillin provides superior exposure compared to oral penicillin in both a prophylactic and therapeutic setting.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are major causes of mortality and morbidity worldwide; yet the understanding of their molecular basis is incomplete. Multi-omics studies have significant potential to uncover these mechanisms, but such studies are challenged by genetic and environmental confounding-a problem that can be effectively reduced by investigating intrapair differences in twins. Here, we linked data on all diagnoses of the circulatory system from the nationwide Danish Patient Registry (spanning 1977-2022) to a study population of 835 twins holding genome-wide DNA methylation and gene expression data. CVD diagnoses were divided into prevalent or incident cases (i.e., occurring before or after blood sample collection (2007-2011)). The diagnoses were classified into four groups: cerebrovascular diseases, coronary artery disease (CAD), arterial and other cardiovascular diseases (AOCDs), and diseases of the veins and lymphatic system. Statistical analyses were performed by linear (prevalent cases) or cox (incident cases) regression analyses at both the individual-level and twin pair-level. Significant genes (p < 0.05) in both types of biological data and at both levels were inspected by bioinformatic analyses, including gene set enrichment analysis and interaction network analysis. RESULTS: In general, more genes were found for prevalent than for incident cases, and bioinformatic analyses primarily found pathways of the immune system, signal transduction and diseases for prevalent cases, and pathways of cell-cell communication, metabolisms of proteins and RNA, gene expression, and chromatin organization groups for incident cases. This potentially reflects biology related to response to CVD (prevalent cases) and mechanisms related to regulation and development of disease (incident cases). Of specific genes, Myosin 1E was found to be central for CAD, and DEAD-Box Helicase 5 for AOCD. These genes were observed in both the prevalent and the incident analyses, potentially reflecting that their DNA methylation and gene transcription levels change both because of disease (prevalent cases) and prior disease (incident cases). CONCLUSION: We present novel biomarkers for CVD by performing multi-omics analysis in twins, hereby lowering the confounding due to shared genetics and early life environment-a study design that is surprisingly rare in the field of CVD, and where additional studies are highly needed.

Keratinocyte-derived skin cancers comprise basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, its precursor actinic keratosis, and Bowen's disease. Historically, this group of neoplasms has been subsumed under the term non-melanoma skin cancer. However, the term non-melanoma skin cancer can be misleading and lacks precision. Therefore, more precise and reasonable terminology, valuing the relevance of keratinocyte-derived cancer, appears pertinent to meet its clinical and scientific significance. A group of experienced dermato-oncologists initiated a consensus approach to promote the use of the term "keratinocyte cancer" instead of "non-melanoma skin cancer" when referring to carcinomas and their precursors that are derived from keratinocytes. The vote among members of the consensus group indicated unanimous agreement on the consistent use of the term "keratinocyte cancer" instead of "non-melanoma skin cancer". International delegates also voted in favour of the revised terminology. The more precise and, by means of etiopathogenesis, correct term "keratinocyte cancer" should be consistently used for malignancies originated from keratinocytes. This is expected to have a positive impact on patient-physician communication and gives better justice to this important group of keratinocyte-derived cancers.

Our prototype system designed for clinical data acquisition and recording of studies is a novel electronic data capture (EDC) software for simple and lightweight data capture in clinical research. Existing software tools are either costly or suffer from very limited features. To overcome these shortcomings, we designed an EDC software together with a mobile client. We aimed at making it easy to set-up, modifiable, scalable and thereby facilitating research. We wrote the software in R using a modular approach and implemented existing data standards along with a meta data driven interface and database structure. The prototype is an adaptable open-source software, which can be installed locally or in the cloud without advanced IT-knowledge. A mobile web interface and progressive web app for mobile use and desktop computers is added. We show the software's capability, by demonstrating four clinical studies with over 1600 participants and 679 variables per participant. We delineate a simple deployment approach for a server-installation and indicate further use-cases. The software is available under the MIT open-source license. Conclusively the software is versatile, easily deployable, highly modifiable, and extremely scalable for clinical studies. As an open-source R-software it is accessible, open to community-driven development and improvement in the future.

BACKGROUND: Ablation is an effective, parenchymal-sparing treatment for primary liver cancer and liver metastases. The purpose of this study was to report our initial experience with laparoscopic microwave ablation regarding postoperative complications, rate of conversions to open procedure, and technical efficacy. METHODS: This was a quality improvement project carried out at a tertiary care center in Denmark. Patients ≥ 18 years old with liver malignancies, not available for percutaneous ablation, and treated with ultrasound-guided laparoscopic ablation were included. RESULTS: From March 2023 to December 2023, 39 patients were referred for laparoscopic ablation after a multidisciplinary team conference. Of these, two procedures were converted to open procedures due to adhesion and tumor progression. Three patients rejected the sharing of medical information, two procedures were canceled and in one case the strategy was changed perioperatively. Therefore, 32 procedures in 31 patients were available for analysis. Complete ablation was evaluated after 1 month and was achieved in 100% of the procedures. None of the patients died, and no complications were reported in 21 cases (65.6%). Most patients with complications had a grade 1 complication based on the Clavien-Dindo classification, which among others included abdominal and shoulder pain, atrial fibrillation, and subcutaneous hematoma. Two patients had a complication grade 2 (wound infection and decompensated cirrhosis) and one had a grade 4b (sepsis due to pneumonia and urinary tract infection). The median Comprehensive Complication Index was 12.2 (interquartile range 8.7-24.2). Furthermore, univariable logistic regression showed that ≥ 2 tumors treated were associated with a higher risk of complications (odds ratio 6.37, 95% confidence interval [1.20;33.85], p-value = 0.0297). CONCLUSION: Ultrasound-guided laparoscopic microwave ablation of liver malignancies is feasible and safe with little risk for complications, a high technical efficacy, and a low rate of conversions to open procedures.

The structural dynamics of the interactions between defensins or lysozymes and various saccharide chains that are covalently linked to lipids or proteins were analyzed in relation to the sub-molecular architecture of the carbohydrate binding sites of lectins. Using tissue materials from rare and endangered domestic animals as well as from dogs it was possible to compare these results with data obtained from a human glioblastoma tissue. The binding mechanisms were analyzed on a cellular and a sub-molecular size level using biophysical techniques (e.g. NMR, AFM, MS) which are supported by molecular modeling tools. This leads to characteristic structural patterns being helpful to understand glyco-biochemical pathways in which galectins, defensins or lysozymes are involved. Carbohydrate chains have a distinct impact on cell differentiation, cell migration and immunological processes. The absence or the presence of sialic acids and the conformational dynamics in glycans are often correlated with zoonoses such as influenza- and coronavirus-infections. Receptor-sensitive glycomimetics could be a solution. The new findings concerning the function of galectin-3 in the nucleus in relation to differentiation processes can be understood when the binding specificity of neuroleptic molecules as well as the interactions between proteins and nucleic acids are describable on a sub-molecular size level.

Musculoskeletal injuries (MSKI) are one of the biggest challenges for military services globally, contributing to substantial financial burdens and lost training and working days. Effective evidence-based intervention strategies are essential to reduce MSKI incidence, and research has shown the positive effect of both nutritional interventions and physical training (PT) interventions on reducing MSKI incidence. Levels of vitamin D metabolites have been associated with MSKI and bone stress fracture risk, while calcium and vitamin D supplementation has been shown to reduce the incidence of stress fractures during military training. Protein and carbohydrate supplementation during arduous military training (high volume, high intensity) has also been shown to reduce MSKI risk and the number of limited/missed duty days. PT has played a key role in soldier development to meet the occupational demands of serving in the armed forces. Paradoxically, while PT is fundamental to enhancing soldier readiness, PT can also be a major contributor to MSKI; emerging evidence suggests that the nature of the PT being performed is a risk factor for MSKI. However, strategies like reducing training load and implementing PT programmes using evidence-based training principles can reduce MSKI incidence among military service members by 33-62%, and reduce the financial burdens for military services. This review provides a summary of effective MSKI reduction interventions and provides strategies to enhance the success and adoption of such interventions.

BACKGROUND: The monarchE and NATALEE trials demonstrated the benefit of CDK4/6 inhibitor (CDK4/6i) therapy in adjuvant breast cancer (BC) treatment. Patient selection, based on clinical characteristics, delineated those at high (monarchE) and high/intermediate recurrence risk (NATALEE). This study employed a historical patient cohort to describe the proportion and prognosis of patients eligible for adjuvant CDK4/6i trials. METHODS: Between 2009 and 2011, 3529 patients were enrolled in the adjuvant PreFace clinical trial (NCT01908556). Eligibility criteria included postmenopausal patients with hormone receptor-positive (HRpos) BC for whom a five-year upfront therapy with letrozole was indicated. Patients were categorized into prognostic groups according to monarchE and NATALEE inclusion criteria, and their invasive disease-free survival (iDFS) and overall survival (OS) were assessed. RESULTS: Among 2891 HRpos patients, 384 (13.3 %) met the primary monarchE inclusion criteria. The majority (n = 261) qualified due to having ≥ 4 positive lymph nodes. For NATALEE, 915 out of 2886 patients (31.7 %) met the eligibility criteria, with 126 patients (13.7 %) being node-negative. Patients from monarchE with ≥ 4 positive lymph nodes and NATALEE with stage III BC exhibited the poorest prognosis (3-year iDFS rate 0.87). Patients ineligible for the trials demonstrated prognoses similar to the most favorable patient groups within the eligibility criteria. CONCLUSION: Patient populations eligible for monarchE and NATALEE trials differed. Nearly a third of the postmenopausal HRpos population, previously under upfront letrozole treatment, met the NATALEE prognostic eligibility criteria. As certain eligible groups had a prognosis similar to non-eligible patients, it might be interesting to explore additional patient groups for CDK4/6i therapy.

The present work documents potassium ferric hexacyanoferrate (KFCF) KFe[Fe(CN)6] containing feed to be an effective and inexpensive countermeasure to reduce the 137Cs contamination of fish. Laboratory aquarium experiments were performed to investigate the effect of feed containing potassium ferric hexacyanoferrate on 137Cs uptake and excretion by silver Prussian carp (Carassius gibelio (Bloch, 1782)). After the 120-day period of 137Cs uptake with feed, reaching equilibrium 137Cs level in fish, fish in some aquariums received feeds containing either 0.1 % or 1 % KFCF for 180 days in combination with clean feed or with feed containing 137Cs. These feeds resulted in 3.6 ± 0.7 and 4.4 ± 0.9 times, respectively, lower activity of 137Cs in fish compared to control fish fed 137Cs throughout the experiment and receiving feed without KFCF. Following the first 100 days with the KFCF containing feed, the 137Cs level in fish fed contaminated feed was even lower than in fish receiving clean feed, with a half-life of 137Cs activity in fish of only T1/2 = 23-35 days. Using clean feed containing 0 %, 0.1 % and 1 % KFCF for 180 days after the 120-day 137Cs uptake period, the excretion rates for 137Cs activity in fish kb' were (6.4 ± 0.2)⋅10-3 day-1, (1.08 ± 0.08)⋅10-2 day-1, and (1.3 ± 0.1)⋅10-2 day-1, respectively (T1/2 = 108 ± 3 days, 64 ± 5 days, and 53 ± 4 days). The decrease rates for 137Cs activity concentrations in fish kb were (8.4 ± 0.3)⋅10-3 day-1, (1.3 ± 0.1)⋅10-2 day-1, and (1.5 ± 0.1)⋅10-2 day-1, respectively (T1/2 = 83 ± 3 days, 53 ± 4 days, and 46 ± 3 days). Our results demonstrate a statistically significant effect (p < 0.01) of KFCF on the excretion of 137Cs from silver Prussian carp: T1/2 decreased from 108 days with clean feeding to 53-64 days when KFCF is added.

Quinones are organic molecules that facilitate electron-transfer reactions in terrestrial environments. The reduced forms, hydroquinones, are powerful reductants that can trigger non-enzymatic radical-based decomposition of organic matter and contaminants by simultaneous reduction of iron and oxygen. Iron oxides often occur as coatings on other minerals, thus our study investigated the reactions between the ferric oxyhydroxide (FeO(OH)) surface coatings on gibbsite (Al(OH)3) and 2,6-dimethoxy-1,4-hydroquinone (2,6-DMHQ). The main aim was to investigate the oxidation of 2,6-DMHQ and the generation ∙OH in the presence of O2 at low Fe concentrations in a novel setup that allows local structural characterization. The heterogeneous redox reactions between 2,6-DMHQ and the FeO(OH) coatings were studied at pH 5.0 as a function of the amount of Fe present on the gibbsite surfaces, including the effect of aging of the FeO(OH) coatings. The results showed that reactions between 2,6-DMHQ and FeO(OH) coated gibbsite under ambient conditions can generate substantial amounts of ·OH, comparable with amounts generated on pure ferrihydrite surfaces. The ·OH is the product of two sequential reactions: hydroquinone oxidation by O2 and degradation of the formed H2O2. The calculated rate constant of the former reaction is the same regardless of amount of FeO(OH) coating suggesting a surface catalytic process where 2,6-DMHQ is oxidized by O2 resulting in formation of H2O2. Subsequently, the observed induction period, the low Fe2+ (aq) concentrations in solution and the dependency of FeO(OH) coating amount influencing ·OH formation suggest that the pathway for ∙OH is through H2O2 decomposition by the surface sites on the FeO(OH) coating. Overall, this study shows that co-existence of oxygen, FeO(OH) and organic reductants, possibly secreted by soil microorganisms, creates favorable conditions for generation of ·OH contributing to decomposition of organic matter and organic pollutants in soil environments.
