RESUMEN
PURPOSE: To present an application of The Shuler Nurse Practitioner Practice Model with elderly patients through use of a gerontological wholistic assessment and the utilization of the model in developing a treatment plan and evaluating patient outcomes. DATA SOURCES: Selected literature from nursing and medicine, including natural, alternative, and complementary (NAC) therapies, as well as the authors' personal experiences. CONCLUSIONS: Providing health care services to the elderly involves recognition of not only physical ailments, but also an awareness of how functional status, psychological condition, social support, environmental conditions and cultural, as well as spiritual beliefs, shape the total health care needs of this vulnerable group. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: Nurse practitioners who work with the aged could benefit from a theoretically based, wholistic assessment guide. Treatment plans that include NAC therapies and healing strategies should be considered. Outcome evaluations should reflect adherence to the elders' preferences regarding quality and end-of-life issues.

Four measures of arithmetic skills were evaluated for 69 learning disabled students (58 boys, 11 girls; 6 to 14 yr. old). These measures were the arithmetic subtests of the Wide Range Achievement Test and Peabody Individual Achievement test, the Key Math, and teachers' ratings. Partial correlations were high, indicating substantial content validity. Mean grade placement scores were generally equivalent for Key Math and teachers' ratings. The Peabody Individual Achievement Test produced significantly higher while the Wide Range Achievement Test resulted in significantly lower grade-placement scores than the other two measures.

Failure to thrive is one of the most common diagnostic problems in pediatrics. The term is applied to describe a still poorly defined entity. We will define failure to thrive, review the frequency of various etiologies, and present a logical approach to this problem.

The purpose of this paper is to report the clinical performance of medical students prepared in three-and four-year curricula. The students were evaluated in five categories: fund of knowledge, medical skills, problem-solving, professional standards, and reliability. The examination of the National Board of Medical Examiners were administered in three of the clinical clerkships. The results indicate that the students performed equally well in most areas, and little difference in clinical performance could be demonstrated between the groups.

The percentage of neutrophils forming erythrocyte-antibody-complement complex (EAC) and with erythrocyte-antibody complex (EAG) was determined for 30 normal newborns and 10 normal adults. The cord values ranged from 84-100% EAC binding cells with a mean of 95%. The adult values ranged from 89-100% EAG binding cells with a mean of 96% rosetted neutrophils. The mean percentage of EAG binding cells in the cord samples was 81%, whereas in the seven adult samples the mean was 87%.

Intestinal obstruction secondary to a mesenteric cyst in childhood, although rare, should be considered in the child between ages 2-10 years with chronic or acute obstruction. A case of mesenteric cyst associated with obstruction is presented, along with a review of the literature.

The use of gimballed and strapped down star trackers for spacecraft attitude determination is a well-developed technology, but it presupposes some restricted degree of knowledge about the star positions and usually requires a special maneuver to obtain a favorable vehicle attitude. The paper considers the general problem of self-contained attitude determination in three axes without a priori knowledge of the star position-vehicle attitude relationship and without the need for any special maneuvers. Two approaches are discussed: The first approach concerns a search for a simple and unique star pattern and an optimum instrument geometry based upon the actual angular distribution of the stars. The second approach concerns the adaption of holography to the problem of a recognition of a star field for attitude determination.
