RESUMEN

In 1997 six patients with posttraumatic ankle arthritis aged 54 (45-71) years were treated with a LINK S.T.A.R. ankle prothesis. The average follow up was 29 (21-36) months. Results were evaluated according to the ankle score of H. Kofoed [7]. Two patients had an excellent outcome and 1 patient had a fair result. In three patients secondary arthrodesis had to be performed, due to loosening of the implant. Based on our experiences we cannot recommend this implant for patients with posttraumatic arthritis at this time.

RESUMEN

Skin and soft tissue necrosis of the heel are the main problems following open reposition and fixation of calcaneal fractures. In order to demonstrate how the classic approaches harm the supplying vessels, the classic medial, lateral, enlarged lateral and bilateral approaches have been simulated in ten lower limbs prepared by arterial latex injection. Bases on anatomic literature and on these findings, we have proposed two modified approaches that minimize damage to the vessels of the adjacent soft tissues yet allow exact reposition of the fractures.

RESUMEN

Due to the advancement in the development of ski, technique, equipment and improvement of the slopes in the last decades, there has been a change in the type, form and location of fractures of the lower leg. In a 25 year follow-up at the department of traumatology of the University of Innsbruck we analysed the winter months of the year 1960/61, 1970/71, 1980/81 and the year 1984/85. A shifting of the localization of injuries towards the upper part of the body has been found. There is no doubt that because of the development of modern ski-bindings lower-leg fractures have decreased significantly with adults. At the age between 11 and 15 years there has been no proportional change in the frequency of injuries. The operative treatment has increased in number in comparison with the conservatively treated fractures.
