RESUMEN

The Gamow-Teller strength in the ß(+) direction to (46)Sc was extracted via the (46)Ti(t,(3)He + γ) reaction at 115 MeV/u. The γ-ray coincidences served to precisely measure the very weak Gamow-Teller transition to a final state at 991 keV. Although this transition is weak, it is crucial for accurately estimating electron-capture rates in astrophysical scenarios with relatively low stellar densities and temperatures, such as presupernova stellar evolution. Shell-model calculations with different effective interactions in the pf shell-model space do not reproduce the experimental Gamow-Teller strengths, which is likely due to sd-shell admixtures. Calculations in the quasiparticle random phase approximation that are often used in astrophysical simulations also fail to reproduce the experimental Gamow-Teller strength distribution, leading to strongly overestimated electron-capture rates. Because reliable theoretical predictions of Gamow-Teller strengths are important for providing astrophysical electron-capture reaction rates for a broad set of nuclei in the lower pf shell, we conclude that further theoretical improvements are required to match astrophysical needs.

RESUMEN

Gamow-Teller (GT) transitions in atomic nuclei are sensitive to both nuclear shell structure and effective residual interactions. The nuclear GT excitations were studied for the mass number A = 42, 46, 50, and 54 "f-shell" nuclei in ((3)He, t) charge-exchange reactions. In the (42)Ca → (42)Sc reaction, most of the GT strength is concentrated in the lowest excited state at 0.6 MeV, suggesting the existence of a low-energy GT phonon excitation. As A increases, a high-energy GT phonon excitation develops in the 6-11 MeV region. In the (54)Fe → (54)Co reaction, the high-energy GT phonon excitation mainly carries the GT strength. The existence of these two GT phonon excitations are attributed to the 2 fermionic degrees of freedom in nuclei.

RESUMEN

We present a novel technique for studying the quenching of shell gaps in exotic isotopes. The method is based on extracting Gamow-Teller (ΔL=0, ΔS=1) transition strengths [B(GT)] to low-lying states from charge-exchange reactions at intermediate beam energies. These Gamow-Teller strengths are very sensitive to configuration mixing between cross-shell orbitals, and this technique thus provides an important complement to other tools currently used to study cross-shell mixing. This work focuses on the N=8 shell gap. We populated the ground and 2.24 MeV 0+ states in 12Be using the 12B(1+) (7Li, 7Be) reaction at 80 MeV/u in inverse kinematics. Using the ground-state B(GT) value from ß-decay measurements (0.184±0.007) as a calibration, the B(GT) for the transition to the second 0+ state was determined to be 0.214±0.051. Comparing the extracted Gamow-Teller strengths with shell-model calculations, it was determined that the wave functions of the first and second 0+ states in 12Be are composed of 25±5% and 60±5% (0s)4(0p)8 configurations, respectively.

RESUMEN

A new technique to measure (p,n) charge-exchange reactions in inverse kinematics at intermediate energies on unstable isotopes was successfully developed and used to study the (56)Ni(p,n) reaction at 110 MeV/u. Gamow-Teller transition strengths from (56)Ni leading to (56)Cu were obtained and compared with shell-model predictions in the pf shell using the KB3G and GXPF1A interactions. The calculations with the GXPF1A interaction reproduce the experimental strength distribution much better than the calculations that employed the KB3G interaction, indicating deficiencies in the spin-orbit and proton-neutron residual potentials for the latter. The results are important for improving the description of electron-capture rates on nuclei in the iron region, which are important for modeling the late evolution of core-collapse and thermonuclear supernovae.

RESUMEN

Fusion cross sections were measured for the exotic proton-halo nucleus 8B incident on a 58Ni target at several energies near the Coulomb barrier. This is the first experiment to report on the fusion of a proton-halo nucleus. The resulting excitation function shows a striking enhancement with respect to expectations for normal projectiles. Evidence is presented that the sum of the fusion and breakup yields saturates the total reaction cross section.

RESUMEN

We report on the first successful extraction of a ß+ Gamow-Teller strength distribution from a radioactive isotope in an intermediate-energy charge-exchange experiment in inverse kinematics. The (7Li,7Be+γ(429 keV)) reaction at 100A MeV was used to measure Gamow-Teller transition strengths from 34P to states in 34Si. The results show that little mixing occurs between sd and pf shell configurations for the low-lying 0+ and 2+ states even though 34Si neighbors the island of inversion and low-lying 2ℏω intruder states exist. Shell-model calculations in the sdpf model space are consistent with these findings.

RESUMEN

The beta-decay properties of the N=Z nuclei 96Cd, 98In, and 100Sn have been studied. These nuclei were produced at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory by fragmenting a 120 MeV/nucleon 112Sn primary beam on a Be target. The resulting radioactive beam was filtered in the A1900 and the newly commissioned Radio Frequency Fragment Separator to achieve a purity level suitable for decay studies. The observed production cross sections of these nuclei are lower than predicted by factors of 10-30. The half-life of 96Cd, which was the last experimentally unknown waiting point half-life of the astrophysical rp process, is 1.03_{-0.21};{+0.24} s. The implications of the experimental T_{1/2} value of 96Cd on the abundances predicted by rp process calculations and the origin of A=96 isobars such as 96Ru are explored.

RESUMEN

Differential cross sections for transitions of known weak strength were measured with the (3He, t) reaction at 420 MeV on targets of 12C, 13C, 18O, 26Mg, 58Ni, 60Ni, 90Zr, 118Sn, 120Sn, and 208Pb. Using these data, it is shown that the proportionalities between strengths and cross sections for this probe follow simple trends as a function of mass number. These trends can be used to confidently determine Gamow-Teller strength distributions in nuclei for which the proportionality cannot be calibrated via beta-decay strengths. Although theoretical calculations in the distorted-wave Born approximation overestimate the data, they allow one to understand the main experimental features and to predict deviations from the simple trends observed in some of the transitions.

RESUMEN

The value of crystalline amino acids compared with glucose in maintaining functional muscle mass (maximum exercise capacity) in the perioperative period was studied. Twelve surgical patients received 100 g of glucose (Group 1) for 7 to 10 days perioperatively, and 12 (Group 2) received 90 g of crystalline amino acids for a similar period. Maximum exercise capacity, nitrogen balance, and serum albumin were studied. The use of amino acids instead of glucose spared nitrogen. Net nitrogen loss was 64.7 +/- 6.7 g in Group 1 compared with 34.7 +/- 4 g in Group 2 (p less than or equal to 0.001). Exercise capacity decreased 13.8 +/- 4.5 percent in Group 1 and 13.3 +/- 2.9 percent in group 2. The serum albumin level decreased by 0.30 +/- 0.2 g/100 ml in Group 1 compared with 0.34 +/- 0.15 g/100 ml in Group 2. These differences were not significant. Changes in serum albumin were correlated with changes in exercise capacity (r = 0.7, p less than or equal to 0.002), but neither was significantly correlated with nitrogen loss. We concluded that the use of amino acids instead of glucose during moderate periods of semi-starvation associated with moderate trauma will not influence loss of exercise capacity significantly, although some nitrogen will be spared; patients undergoing moderately severe surgical procedures accompanied by moderate periods of semistarvation will lose approximately 14 percent of their exercise capacity; and loss of exercise capacity is not correlated with loss of nitrogen under these conditions but is loosely correlated with changes in serum albumin levels.

RESUMEN

This study was undertaken to determine the changes in basic nutritional indices associated with major colonic surgery accompanied by periods of semi-starvation. Changes in weight, serum albumin, nitrogen balance, and maximum exercise capacity were studied. Weight loss was 5.5 +/- 1 per cent, serum albumin decreased 0.20 +/- 0.15 gm per cent. Nitrogen loss was 5.9 +/- 0.9 gm per day and maximum exercise capacity decreased by 13.5 +/- 1.8 per cent. Nitrogen balance improved when amino acids were substituted for glucose as the maintenance regimen, but no corresponding improvement in exercise performance could be demonstrated. It is concluded that major colonic surgery associated with moderate periods of semi-starvation is associated with an average nitrogen loss of 5.9 +/- 0.9 gm per day and a 13.5 +/- 1.8 per cent loss in maximum exercise capacity or effective muscle mass.
