Gliomas of the optic nerve are rare, comprising only 1% of intracranial neoplasms in adults and 5% in children. This is the first recorded case of a ganglioglioma of the optic nerve. A 2-year-old White boy presented with a convergent squint and blindness of the left eye. At operation a pale, firm, fusiform swelling was found. The cytological and histopathological features are described.

Paraneoplastic complications are obscure and difficult to understand. The association of motor neuron disease and carcinoma may sometimes be more than coincidental, and 2 cases are described. One patient had motor neuron disease, limbic encephalitis (a recognized paraneoplastic disorder) and carcinoma of the oesophagus; the other had motor neuron disease and adenocarcinoma of the rectum. In the elderly male with motor neuron disease simple screening tests to exclude lymphoma and carcinoma of the lung, bowel and genito-urinary tract are advocated.

Primary rib tumours uncommon in children and their diagnosis and management pose unique problems. The majority of these growths arise from cartilage and are malignant. Chondrosarcoma of varying histological gradations is the common tumour. The distinction between benign and malignant tumours is seldom clear-cut. We describe the presentation, management and pathological features in a child with a gaint chondromatous hamartoma of the first rib.

Enema administration is common in Black tribal communities. In the urban environment, toxic and corrosive ingredients may be used which can lead to severe complications. The diagnosis and principles of treatment of complicated proctocolitis of enema origin are discussed. The management of 2 patients who developed long stricutres extending low into the rectum is described. After subtotal rectal and sigmoid resection, continuity was successfully restored using a transanal sleeve anastomosis. Subsequent continence was normal in both patients.
