RESUMEN

Efficiency of glutamic acid for therapy of early signs of occupational fluorosis was studied in workers engaged into cryolite production. The study proved that use of glutamic acid in occupational conditions prevents progressing of metabolic disorders. The results encourage recommendations to include glutamate into therapeutic and prophylactic nutrition of workers exposed to fluor compounds, into nutritive additions according to special recipe.

RESUMEN

Hygienic studies were conducted by means of pilot industrial plant for production of carbon tetrafluoride fibers (CTF). The studies proved that the main hazards of the production are CTF dust and hydrogen fluoride. Average shift concentrations of CTF dust in tne air of workplace equal 0.6-1.5 mg/cu m which 2 times higher than the MAC for HF at all technologic sites except for reactor compartment. The workers servicing the plant demonstrate higher urinary fluor excretion mostly due to HF intake. Experimental studies showed that CTF have low cytotoxicity and fibrogenic activity, these chemicals are assigned to IV jeopardy class (mild hazards). If applied on skin, CTF are absorbed and induce slight local irritation. The MAC for CTF in the air of workplace is set at 6 mg/cu m.

RESUMEN

Aluminum sulfate, potash alum, ammonium alum, purified and unpurified nephelinic coagulant are assigned to the 3rd jeopardy class (moderately dangerous chemicals), sodium alum--to the 4th jeopardy class (slightly dangerous chemicals) at the single exposure. Local irritation of rabbit's skin was not revealed, but instillation into the eye results in conjunctivitis and purulent ophthalmitis. Aluminum sulfate and coagulants afflict the nervous system, liver and heart. The recommended MAC in the air of workplace for aluminum sulfate, potash alum, sodium alum and coagulants based on them is equal to 0.5 mg/m3.

RESUMEN

The study (experiments on animals and on culture of rats' peritoneal macrophages) covered fluorides of rare-earth metals (REM) assigned to yttrium group--yttrium, terbium, ytterbium, lutetium. Fluorides of REM have low toxicity and cumulativity, induce no local irritation of skin and eyes. Fluorides of yttrium, terbium and lutetium, if administered into stomach, result in specific intoxication (fluorosis). Fluoride of ytterbium did not cause such intoxication. According to short-term tests of cytotoxicity, the foreseeable fibrogenic danger for ytterbium fluoride is moderate, for fluorides of yttrium, terbium and lutetium is mild. The authors recommend to control the level of yttrium, terbium and lutetium fluorides in the air of workplace through the MACs for the fluorides at 2.5 mg/cu m (maximal single concentration) and 0.5 mg/cu m (average shift concentration), the level of ytterbium fluoride as moderate fibrogenic dust at 6 mg/cu m.
