RESUMEN

Background: Obesity creates a burden of disease that affects the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of women and in those between 20 to 59 years of age it implies greater morbidity and mortality compared to men or other age groups. Objective: To evaluate the HRQoL of Mexican women aged 20 to 59 years with obesity. Material and methods: Observational, cross-sectional, prospective, and retrospective study. It was obtained a sample of 104 women from 20 to 59 years of age diagnosed with obesity according to the NOM-008-SSA3-2017 Standard. The participants' main clinical and sociodemographic characteristics were collected, and their HRQoL was evaluated with the SF-36 questionnaire. For the analysis of the collected variables, descriptive statistics were used. To identify the association of these variables with HRQoL, the Kruskal-Wallis test was used. Results: 104 women with a median age of 40.0 years participated. Of these, 66.3% had grade I obesity, 21.2% grade II, and 12.5% grade III. In the overall sample, general health and vitality were the lowest dimensions. In the comparison by groups, the physical role and the emotional role had statistically significant differences (p = 0.007 and p = 0.009, respectively), with the most affected group being obesity grade II. Conclusions: Obesity mainly affected the perception of general health and vitality; likewise, those with grade II had a greater impact on the physical role and the emotional role.

RESUMEN

Propolis is a complex mixture formed from exudates that bees collect from plants and then mix with beeswax and their own salivary enzymes. Chilean propolis is characterized by the presence of phenolic compounds, which are considered responsible for the biological activities. The endemic species Escallonia pulverulenta (Ruiz and Pav.) Pers. [Escalloniaceae] is a recognized source of exudate to produce propolis. This study reports for the first time the chemical profile and antibacterial activity of E. pulverulenta exudate and leaves, as well as two samples of Chilean propolis. Palynological and morphological analysis showed the presence of E. pulverulenta as one of the main species in the propolis samples. UPLC-MS/MS analyses enabled the identification of phenolic acids in the leaves and in the propolis. Conversely, flavonoids are mainly present in exudates and propolis. Quercetin is the most abundant flavonol in the exudate, with similar concentrations in the propolis samples. Nevertheless, the main compound present in both samples of propolis was the flavanone pinocembrin. The antibacterial results obtained for exudate and propolis have shown a similar behavior, especially in the inhibition of Streptococcus pyogenes. These results show the importance of the exudates collected by the bees in the chemical composition and antibacterial capacity of propolis.

RESUMEN

Backround: Venous thromboembolic disease (VTED) is a frequent cause of hospitalization and mortality. Whole blood viscosity (WBV) participates in the pathogenesis of thrombosis. Objective: To identify the most frequent etiologies and their association with WBV index (WBVI) in hospitalized patients with VTED. Material and methods: Observational, cross-sectional, retrospective, analytical study, Group 1: cases (patients diagnosed with VTED) and Group 2: controls without thrombosis. Risk factors for VTED were described and WBVI was calculated from total proteins and hematocrit. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used with Chi-squared test, Fisher's exact test, Mann Whitney U test, bivariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis. Results: We included 146 patients and 148 controls, age 46.3 ±17.7 vs. 58 ± 18.2 years, of both sexes (female, 65.1%). The most frequent etiology was neoplastic (23.3%), followed by diseases with cardiovascular risk (17.8%). Independent risk factors for VTED were age, chronic kidney disease, presence of liver disease or solid neoplasia. WBVI was similar in patients with VTED as in those without thrombosis. We found an association of the presence of deep vein thrombosis and diseases with cardiovascular risk (p = 0.040). Conclusions: The presence of chronic kidney disease, liver disease, and solid neoplasia are independent risk factors for VTED. The WBVI is a simple and rapid diagnostic tool in the evaluation of patients with VTED.

RESUMEN

Accipiter bicolor is a widely distributed Neotropical raptor but knowledge about its ecology is poor, particularly in urban areas. In this work, we document the presence of A. bicolor in the city of Guayaquil and in nearby forested areas, in addition, we provide new records on its diet and discuss possible foraging strategies in synanthropic environments. Also, reports of this species are considered on citizen science platforms. Accipiter bicolor was observed consuming an individual of Columbina bluckeyi and another of Artibeus fraterculus; near a colony of this species of bat. Finally, we found 59 records of A. bicolor between 2007 and 2022 for Guayaquil and its surrounding areas, 14 records were in urban habitats. Observations in different urban and peri-urban habitats are discussed, as well as their feeding habits.

RESUMEN

Enzyme-linked immunoelectrotransfer blot (EITB) detects antibodies against seven Taenia solium larvae antigens in three protein families (GP50, T24/42, and 8-kDa) with different structures and functions. EITB banding patterns against these antigens in pigs provide information about the course of infection and may discriminate viable cysticercosis. We analyzed the banding patterns and infection outcomes (presence of viable cysts, degenerated cysts, and any cysts) of 512 rural pigs. Banding patterns were grouped into homogenous classes using latent class analysis, and relationships with infection outcomes were assessed. Four classes were identified: 1 (n = 308, EITB-negative or positive for the GP50 family), 2 (n = 127, positive for GP50 (GP50 family), GP42-39 and GP24 (T24/42 family), but negative for 8-kDa antigens), 3 (n = 22, positive for GP50 and T24/42 antigens (GP42-39 and GP24), as well as to 8-kDa bands GP13, GP14, and GP18, but negative for GP21), and 4 (n = 55, positive for GP50 and T24/42 antigens, as well as to 8-kDa antigens GP21 and GP18 in combination). Pigs in classes 3 and 4 were more likely to have viable cysts (72.6% and 96.4%, respectively) than pigs in classes 1 and 2 (0.7% and 27.6%, respectively; p < 0.001). The number of infections with any cysts was higher in classes 3 and 4 (77.3% and 98.2%, respectively) and lower in classes 2 and 1 (34.7% and 4.9%, respectively; p < 0.001). Pigs with viable cysts represented >90% of pigs with any cysts in classes 3 and 4 (94.1% and 98.2%, respectively), while degenerated cysts were frequent among pigs with any cysts in classes 1, 3, and 2 (86.7%, 47.1%, and 43.2%, respectively; p < 0.001). EITB banding patterns strongly correlate with cysticercosis infection status in rural pigs, with classes 3 and 4 being more predictive of viable infections.

RESUMEN

In plants salt and water stress result in an induction of respiration and accumulation of stress-related metabolites (SRMs) with osmoregulation and osmoprotection functions that benefit photosynthesis. The synthesis of SRMs may depend on an active respiratory metabolism, which can be restricted under stress by the inhibition of the cytochrome oxidase pathway (COP), thus causing an increase in the reduction level of the ubiquinone pool. However, the activity of the alternative oxidase pathway (AOP) is thought to prevent this from occurring while at the same time, dissipates excess of reducing power from the chloroplast and thereby improves photosynthetic performance. The present research is based on the hypothesis that the accumulation of SRMs under osmotic stress will be affected by changes in folial AOP activity. To test this, the oxygen isotope-fractionation technique was used to study the in vivo respiratory activities of COP and AOP in leaves of wild-type Arabidopsis thaliana plants and of aox1a mutants under sudden acute stress conditions induced by mannitol and salt treatments. Levels of leaf primary metabolites and transcripts of respiratory-related proteins were also determined in parallel to photosynthetic analyses. The lack of in vivo AOP response in the aox1a mutants coincided with a lower leaf relative water content and a decreased accumulation of crucial osmoregulators. Additionally, levels of oxidative stress-related metabolites and transcripts encoding alternative respiratory components were increased. Coordinated changes in metabolite levels, respiratory activities and photosynthetic performance highlight the contribution of the AOP in providing flexibility to carbon metabolism for the accumulation of SRMs.

RESUMEN

Nanovaccine development is a growing research field in which the development of new carriers and bioconjugation approaches is a priority. In this sense, this report describes for the first time, the development of a novel conjugate that consists of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) obtained by a one-step synthesis using an immunogenic peptide of the Lipopolysaccharide-assembly protein LptD fromVibrio parahaemolyticusbacteria as a reducing and capping agent. The resultingLptD@AuNPscompounds were fully characterized and the results showed the high capacity of the peptide to form complexes and reduce gold ions. The reaction yield estimated was higher than 83% and the chemical integrity of the peptide on the NP surface revealed a tyrosine amino acid bonding on the AuNP surface. Furthermore, theLptD@AuNPsystem showed high colloidal stability in a wide pH range (3-11 pH values), where the hydrodynamic diameter and Zeta potential behavior were strongly influenced by the functional groups of the antigenic peptide. The cytotoxicity assays showed that the obtained system is safe for mouse leukocytes, while immunized mice withLptD@AuNPsproduced specific IgG antibodies. These encouraging results revealed the efficacy of some antigenic peptides as reducers and capping agents, in addition, opening the path to determine immunogenicity and immunoprotective efficacy of theLptD@AuNPsystem against the disease induced byVibrio parahaemolyticus.

The location of trees and the individualization of their canopies are important parameters to estimate diameter, height, and biomass, among other variables. The very high spatial resolution of UAV imagery supports these processes. A dense 3D point cloud is generated from RGB UAV images, which is used to obtain a digital elevation model (DEM). From this DEM, a canopy height model (CHM) is derived for individual tree identification. Although the results are satisfactory, the quality of this detection is reduced if the working area has a high density of vegetation. The objective of this study was to evaluate the use of color vegetation indices (CVI) in canopy individualization processes of Pinus radiata. UAV flights were carried out, and a 3D dense point cloud and an orthomosaic were obtained. Then, a CVI was applied to 3D point cloud to differentiate between vegetation and nonvegetation classes to obtain a DEM and a CHM. Subsequently, an automatic crown identification procedure was applied to the CHM. The results were evaluated by contrasting them with results of manual individual tree identification on the UAV orthomosaic and those obtained by applying a progressive triangulated irregular network to the 3D point cloud. The results obtained indicate that the color information of 3D point clouds is an alternative to support individualizing trees under conditions of high-density vegetation.

RESUMEN

Myrtaceae fruits (Myrceugenia obtusa, Luma apiculata, and Luma chequen) were used as food and medicine by Chilean indigenous people. This study aimed to evaluate the bioactive properties of these berry-type fruits. The antioxidant capacity determined by the FRAP assay varied between 10.4 and 646.9 mmol Fe+2/g, while the antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella typhi was 0 - 33 mm and 0 - 7.33 mm, respectively. All the extracts were rich in polyphenols and showed low cytotoxicity. Overall, M. obtusa presented dissimilar results compared to those of L. apiculata and L. chequen, encouraging the use of these native fruits as food, nutraceutical, or pharmacological ingredients.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Tomato is widely consumed throughout the world for its flavor and nutritional value. This functional food largely depends on the implementation of new strategies to maintain the nutraceutical value, e.g. lycopene concentration, and overcome the challenges of sustainable production and food security. The use of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF)-based biostimulants represents one of the most promising tools for sustainable management of agricultural soils, being fundamental for organic food production, reducing fertilizers and pesticides use, and decreasing environmental damage. This study aimed at elucidating whether native arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) could positively affect tomato yield and lycopene concentration. RESULTS: Native AMF inoculum consisted of two inoculum types: the single species Claroideoglomus claroideum, and a mix of Scutellospora calospora, Acaulospora laevis, Claroideoglomus claroideum, and Claroideoglomus etunicatum. At the end of the study up to 78% of the root system was colonized by single inoculum. Tomato diameters in single and mix mycorrhizal plants showed increases of 80% and 35% respectively. Fresh weights were 84% and 38% higher with single and mix inocula compared with the controls, respectively. The lycopene concentration in tomato fruits of plants with single and mix inoculum was higher than controls. The lycopene concentration was 124.5% and 113.9% greater in single and mix than non-inoculated plants. CONCLUSION: Tomato diameters, fresh weight and lycopene concentration was significantly higher in plants colonized by AMF compared with uninoculated plants. Results suggest that the role of single species Claroideoglomus claroideum could generate better plant performance due to its high production of extraradical mycelium. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Data describing the characteristics, treatment, and survival of oncological patients referred to PCS remains scarce. Aim: To establish the characteristics of oncological patients referred to PCS, including their profile, treatment, and survival within a 7-year period. DESIGN: Retrospective review of medical records. Clinical variables such as treatment and dates were included. Ji2 or Wilcoxon tests were used accordingly; Kaplan-Meier and log rank test were used to estimate survival. SETTING/PARTICIPANTS: Consecutive oncological patients diagnosed between 2012 and 2018 sent to PCS were included. RESULTS: We studied 5,631 patients, 58% female and 59% at advanced stage. Median age was 59 years, with 6 years or less of formal education and low monthly income ($152.4 USD). Neoplasms included breast (12%), stomach (12%), colorectal (10%) and cervical cancer (9%). Median referral time was 5.1 months; pain was the main reason for referral. Morphine was the most prescribed opioid with 47%. Median overall survival was 3.1 months. CONCLUSIONS: Morphine remains the paradigm of treatment making necessary to emphasize information on its optimal use. Additional measures such as education for cancer prevention and early referral to PCS are vital to improve survival and quality of life.

RESUMEN

Human bites are an infrequent cause of emergency department visits and hospital admissions. There are rarely published cases of complicated infection, such as infective endocarditis. We present a rare case of a patient with acute infective endocarditis in a healthy native valve and purulent pericarditis from a human bite. A 40-year-old man with obesity suffered deep human bites by an adult woman, with two deep lesions in the anterior thorax and one superficial lesion in the upper abdomen and admitted in intensive care unit with septic shock and a persistent aortic murmur. Echocardiography described evidence of vegetation, perforation and severe regurgitation of aortic valve. Scanner described moderate pericardial effusion. Cardiac surgery was performed, with evidence of purulent pericardial effusion after pericardiotomy, and subsequently aortic valve replacement with a 25 mm bioprosthesis. The patient showed positive progress.

RESUMEN

Nalca is an edible rhubarb-type plant from the southern of Chile; with studies focussing on petiole chemical and biological properties. This work evaluated for the first time the antibacterial capacities of three organs of nalca against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Petiole (P), root (R) and flower (F) ethanolic extracts at three different concentrations (25, 50, 100 mg/mL) were evaluated by means of agar diffusion assay and MIC. The result showed that antibacterial activities are bacteria and concentration dependent, with root having the highest antimicrobial activity of the organs plant studied. Compared to commercial antibiotics, nalca extracts show promising control over Ps. aeruginosa. The main polyphenolics of the extracts were identified by UPLC-MS/MS, observing for the first time caffeic, coumaric and gallic acids presence in all samples, with quercetin and rutin determined in petiole and flower extracts only. RESUMEN

PURPOSE: Institutional arthroplasty registries are very popular nowadays; however, very few efforts have been made in order to standardize the information to be collected, thus limiting the possibility of inter-institutional data interpretation. This manuscript reports the results of a single-country consensus designed to define the minimum standardized dataset to be recorded within an institutional arthroplasty registry. METHODS: A national consensus was carried out among all members of the Colombian Society of Hip and Knee Surgeons using the Delphi method. Eleven questions and answers comprising every potential domain of an institutional registry of hip and knee arthroplasty were defined. According to the methodology, anonymous voting and multiple discussion rounds were performed. Three levels of agreement were defined: Strong consensus: equal to or greater than 80%, weak consensus between 70 and 79.9%, and no consensus below 70%. RESULTS: All of the questions reached consensus level. The minimum dataset was defined to include demographic and clinical information, intraoperative and implant details, follow-up and early complications, implant survival, and functional outcome scores, as well as the validation model to assess information quality within the database. Currently, this dataset is being implemented voluntarily by the members of our national society. DISCUSSION: A national consensus is a feasible method to build homogeneous arthroplasty registries. We recommend such an exercise since it establishes the basis to compare and add data between institutions and the joint analysis of said information in a national registry.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Routine manual cleaning and disinfection of the health care environment is often suboptimal. Residual contamination poses an infection risk, particularly for immunocompromised patients. This study evaluates the efficacy of dry hydrogen peroxide (DHP) on microbial surface contamination in a pediatric oncology intensive care unit. METHODS: Surface samples from 5 high-touch and 2 low-touch surfaces were obtained for culture and adenosine triphosphate readings after manual cleaning on multiple days in 4 intensive care unit rooms, before and after DHP was deployed. Air samples were collected as well at the study site. Data outcomes were measured in terms of total colony-forming units for the cultures and relative light units for adenosine triphosphate. RESULTS: The overall mean surface microbial burden was significantly reduced in the intervention group compared to the control group (mean 5.50 vs 11.77, P<.001). These reductions in colony-forming units were seen across all sampling sites in the intervention group. A reduction in the mean relative light units levels was also noted in the intervention group when compared to the control group (172.08 vs 225.83, P <.006). Reductions with the air samples were also noted (P = .139). CONCLUSIONS: Study demonstrates that DHP was effective in reducing microbial surface contamination and improves quality of environmental cleaning.

RESUMEN

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Chilean population relies on medicinal plants for treating a wide range of illnesses, especially those of the gastrointestinal system. Junellia spathulata (Gillies & Hook.) Moldenke var. spathulata (Verbenaceae), called as "verbena-azul-de-cordilleira", is a medicinal plant native to Argentina and Chile traditionally used for treating digestive disorders. Although the species of the genus are important as therapeutic resources for the Andean population, the plants are very scarcely studied. AIMS OF THE STUDY: The purpose of the present study was to find out the main constituents and investigate the protective effect of J. spathulata against oxidative stress induced by the potent oxidant 2,2'-azobis (2-amidinopropane) dihydrochloride (AAPH) in human hepatoblastoma cells. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The crude methanol extract of J. spathulata and an iridoid obtained by chromatographic processes were tested to access the hepatoprotective effect and cytotoxicity in HepG2 cell. In addition, the reducing power of the samples and their ability to scavenge free radicals were evaluated using FRAP and ORAC assay systems. RESULTS: The iridoid asperuloside, the main compound of the crude methanol extract of J. spathulata, was isolated and identified by means of NMR analysis. The crude methanol extract of J. spathulata and asperuloside protected HepG2 cells against oxidative damage triggered by AAPH-derived free radicals. This effect can be credited to the ability of the extract and asperuloside to protect the liver cells from chemical-induced injury, which might be correlated to their free radical scavenging potential. CONCLUSIONS: This study experimentally evidenced the ethnopharmacological usefulness of J. spathulata as a treatment of digestive disorders. Our result could stimulate further investigations of hepatoprotective agents in other Chilean Junellia species.

RESUMEN

This study evaluated the effect of the three inulin levels (0.1%, 0.2%, 0.4%) supplemented as a substitute for an antibiotic growth promoter (AGP, zinc bacitracin) and control in guinea pigs raised for human consumption. Fifty 14-day-old male guinea pigs were used. Productive parameters (weight gain, total dry matter intake, and feed conversion ratio (FCR)) and intestinal morphology of the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum at slaughter (70 days of age) were evaluated. An inverse relationship was observed between inulin levels and FCR (linear effect; P = 0.006). There was no statistically significant effect of the treatments on total dry matter intake and weight gain (P > 0.05). A linear effect of the inulin level on the villis length (VL), villis width (VW), and length/depth ratio (VL/DC) in the duodenum; VW in the jejunum; and VL in the ileum (P <0 .05) was reported. In conclusion, a linear effect of the increasing doses of inulin was found on the FCR and the morphological parameters of the duodenums integrity, and no differences in the effects of the inulin added to the diet and the treatment with AGP were found.(AU)
