RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To compare tooth inclinations in different sagittal skeletal patterns and transverse maxillary relationships three-dimensionally. METHODS: A cross-sectional study carried out with 132 three-dimensional digital models in the complete permanent dentition divided into six groups (n=22); three groups with maxillary atresia: G1- skeletal class I, G2- skeletal class II and G3-skeletal class III; three groups without maxillary atresia: G4- skeletal class I; G5- skeletal class II and G6- skeletal class III. The comparison between the skeletal pattern was performed by the non-parametric tests of Kruskal Wallis and Dunn and between the groups by the non-parametric test of Mann Whitney. RESULTS: Subjects with skeletal class II and maxillary atresia had a greater lingual inclination of the maxillary teeth than those with class I and III; Subjects with skeletal class II without atresia had a less lingual inclination of the mandibular molars than the other classes (p<0.05). The maxillary premolars showed no variation in dental inclination with atresia, independent of the skeletal class in G1, G2, and G3 (p>0.05). The mandibular premolars showed that the groups without atresia G4, G5, and G6 presented no significant difference (p>0.05). Lower premolars in skeletal class III malocclusion individuals with atresia had a more negative inclination than the others. CONCLUSION: There is a difference in the inclination of posterior teeth between individuals with and without maxillary atresia and skeletal classes I, II, and III.

RESUMEN

This study aimed to assess and correlate initial surface roughness and frictional resistance of rectangular CuNiTi wires inserted in different self-ligating brackets. The sample consisted of 40 bracket-wire sets (rectangular CuNiTi wires of 0.017" x 0.025" and passive self-ligating brackets) divided into four groups (n=10): metallic self-ligating bracket and metallic CuNiTi wire (G1); metallic self-ligating bracket and rhodium-coated CuNiTi wire (G2); esthetic self-ligating bracket and metallic wire (G3); esthetic self-ligating bracket and rhodium-coated CuNiTi wire (G4). The initial surface roughness of the wires was examined with a Surfcorder roughness meter, model SE1700. Later, frictional resistance was assessed in an Instron 4411 universal testing machine at a speed of 5 mm/min, in an aqueous medium at 35°C. Microscopic analyses of surface morphology were performed with scanning electron microscopy, using an LEO 1430, with magnifications of 1000X. Generalized linear models were applied, considering the 2 x 2 factorial (bracket type x wire type), at a 5% significance level. Regardless of bracket type, the groups with esthetic wires presented higher initial surface roughness than the groups with metallic wires (p<0.05). There was no significant difference between the different bracket-wire sets for frictional resistance and no significant correlation between frictional resistance and initial surface roughness in the environment studied. It is concluded that esthetic wires presented higher initial surface roughness but did not interfere with the frictional resistance between brackets and wires.

A new device was developed to enable the visualization and measurement of canine angulation while at the same time visualizing and measuring the force transmitted to adjacent teeth. This study aimed to evaluate the mesiodistal tilt angle of the upper canine brackets, the wire deflection, and its effects on adjacent teeth with five different slot designs of upper canines. Wires (0.020" and 0.019" x 0.025") were tested on different five bracket types at five different distal angles. The force applied to adjacent teeth was measured as the angle was increased, and its consequences were observed in the posterior and anterior regions as well. The force tension (gf) was measured in a universal testing machine. Data were submitted to a 3-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (α=0.05). For both arches, regardless of the type of tooth and bracket type, the highest means tension mean values were shown by the 20° angle, followed by the 15°,10°, and 5° angles, which differed statistically among themselves. Overall, for 5°, 10°, and 15° angles, conventional and versatile brackets showed significantly higher force values in all teeth, tip-edge and control brackets showed the lowest. The highest force values were observed in central and lateral incisors with conventional and versatile brackets and on first and second premolar teeth with self-ligating passive and control brackets. Conventional brackets presented the highest forces, tip-edge and control brackets showed the lowest. The teeth that suffered the greatest forces were lateral incisors, and those that suffered the least were second premolars.

PURPOSE: To evaluate in vitro the effect of gastroesophageal reflux, before and after bonding of metal brackets on composite resin surface. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two hundred and ten resin discs were divided into 5 groups (n=42), according to the time and medium of storage: 24h, 7- and -30 days in artificial saliva (AS) and hydrochloric acid (HCL). Twelve samples from each group were submitted to surface roughness analysis (n=60). The other one hundred and fifty samples were divided into 3 groups (n=50) according to the bonding material: Transbond™ XT (TXT), 3M™ Filtek™ Z250 (Z250) and 3M™ Filtek™ Z350 XT (Z350). After bonding, the samples were subdivided, one more time, into 5 groups (n=10) according to the time (24h, 7, and 30 days) and medium storage (AS, HCL). Following, the shear bond strength (SBS) analysis was accomplished. Erosive challenge was performed for 7 or 30 days, before and after bonding of orthodontic brackets, for 1min, 4 times a day. SBS was performed in a universal testing machine (Instron) at 0.5mm/min. SBS data were subjected to two-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (α=0.05). RESULTS: TXT showed higher SBS values in all conditions (AS - 10.9±2.0 (24h); 10.5±4.9 (7 days); 9.4±2.2 (30 days); HCL - 11.5±3.7 (7 days); 8.0±2.1 (30 days)) - (P<0.0001). No statistical difference was detected in SBS between Z250 and Z350 composite resins (Z250 SBS: AS - 7.1±1.9 (24h), 5.2±1.8 (7 days), 4.5±1.5 (30 days); HCL - 5.2±2.3 (7 days), 5.0±2.5 (30 days)) - (P<=0.063)/Z350 SBS: AS - 7.4±1.0 (24h); 3.7±1.7 (7 days); 3.4±1.7 (30 days); HCL - 3.5±3.3 (7 days); 4.4±1.2 (30 days)) - (P<=0.167), respectively). Storage times and media did not statistically influence the SBS of TXT and Z250 composite resins (P>0.05), but did influence the Z350 SBS (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: Regardless of time and storage medium, TXT was the best composite resin for bonding brackets. Furthermore, the erosive challenge did not lead to surface changes in the Z250 resin at 7 and 30 days, unlike the Z350 resin.

RESUMEN

Aim: This study aims to evaluate the surface roughness and susceptibility to staining of bleached composite resin with 22% carbamide peroxide, as well as the effect of subsequent prophylaxis with NaHCO3 powder. Material and Methods: Forty disk-shaped (2 × 6 mm) specimens of composite resin (Z250 XT) were prepared. Half of the specimens were subjected to bleaching with 22% carbamide peroxide, and the other half were stored in artificial saliva. In sequence, all specimens were immersed in acai juice (Euterpe oleracea) for 4 h for 14 days, and subdivided into two groups. Group 1 samples were subjected to prophylaxis treatment, while group 2 samples were subjected to treatment with artificial saliva. Surface roughness (Ra) and color (ΔE*) were measured after polishing (T0), bleaching (T1), immersion in acai juice (T2), and application of NaHCO3 powder (T3) using a profilometer and a spectrophotometer. Results: Statistical analyses (analysis of variance and Tukey's test, p≤0.05) revealed that regarding color there was statistically significance for the factors in isolation, except for the factor bleaching. For both color and surface roughness there was statistically significant difference for the interaction, except for the interaction between NaHCO3 power and bleaching. Conclusion: The NaHCO3 air-powder polishing decreases the staining of the composite resin; however, it increases the surface roughness. With respect to the color variable, the whitening factor had no significant effect on the tested material; however, it increases surface roughness.

INTRODUCTION: The most used product for surface acid conditioning for enamel is 37-40% phosphoric acid, which promotes greater mechanical retention. AIM: The objective of this study was to compare the shear bond strength (SBS) of brackets bonded to bovine enamel with different acid conditioning protocols and to analyze the surface morphology. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 169 teeth (n = 13) were divided into 4 groups: control group without conditioning (G1), Dental Gel 37% phosphoric acid (Dentsply) (G2), Ultra Etch 35% (Ultradent) (G3) and Attaque gel 37% (Biodinâmica) (G4). Groups G2, G3 and G4 were subdivided according to the conditioning time into: 10 s (a), 15 s (b), 30 s (c) and 60 s (d). The superficial enamel morphology (n = 3) was analyzed using a scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to analyze the depth of the microporosities. The samples were submitted to the shear test (SBS) with the aid of a universal testing machine (INSTRON) with a speed of 1 mm/min. The enamel after debonding was analyzed to determine the adhesive remnant index (ARI) in a stereoscopic magnifying glass. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS USED: The SBS data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA. ARI data were analyzed using generalized linear models and SEM measurements were analyzed using Kruskal Wallis and Dunn tests. The 95% significance level was used. RESULTS: The SBS within G2, G3 and G4 ranged from 11.11 to 12.66 MPa. ARI score 3 was observed in 35% of the samples. The samples analyzed in the SEM showed microporosity depth rangingfrom 1.28 to 2.48 µm. CONCLUSIONS: There was no difference between the acids and times evaluated for SBS. The ARI analysis showed that the studied acids provide protection to the enamel surface, keeping the adhesive attached to the buccal surface after debonding. The increase in conditioning time is directly proportional to the deterioration of the prismatic and interprismatic content.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a disease caused by a newly discovered coronavirus, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), which usually leads to non-specific respiratory symptoms. Although pregnant women are considered at risk for respiratory infections by other viruses, such as SARS and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS), little is known about their vulnerability to SARS-CoV-2. Therefore, this study aims to identify and present the main studies on the topic, including the postpartum period. METHODS: In this narrative review, articles were searched in various databases, organizations, and health entities using keywords compatible with medical subject headings (MeSH), such as: COVID-19, pregnancy, vertical transmission, coronavirus 2019, and SARS-CoV-2. RESULTS: The review of the scientific literature on the subject revealed that pregnant women with COVID-19 did not present clinical manifestations significantly different from those of non-pregnant women; however, there are contraindicated therapies. Regarding fetuses, studies were identified that reported that infection by SARS-CoV-2 in pregnant women can cause fetal distress, breathing difficulties and premature birth, but there is no substantial evidence of vertical transmission. CONCLUSION: Due to the lack of adequate information and the limitations of the analyzed studies, it is necessary to provide detailed clinical data on pregnant women infected with SARS-CoV-2 and on the maternal-fetal repercussions caused by this infection. Thus, this review may contribute to expand the knowledge of professionals working in the area as well as to guide more advanced studies on the risk related to pregnant women and their newborns. Meanwhile, monitoring of confirmed or suspected pregnant women with COVID-19 is essential, including in the postpartum period.

COVID-19, a disease caused by a coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2), has worried health authorities in Brazil and worldwide because of its high infectivity and rapid spread. Within this context, health care workers are at greater risk of infection for being in close contact with patients, which is inherent to their work activities. To reduce the risk, protective measures must be adopted and personal protective equipment is essential. However, the process of removing personal protective equipment, named doffing, is as important as its correct use and can be a source of contamination for workers, especially when equipment is lacking in the market and lifespan is increased. Therefore, this review aimed to discuss the process of doffing personal protective equipment and its correct sequence based on data available in the literature.

RESUMEN

AIM: To assess the influence of elastomeric ligatures, subjected to a previous in vitro pigmentation process using different substances, on smile aesthetics during orthodontic treatment, from the perception of students and professionals. METHODS: Eight elastomeric ligatures of five commercial brands (3M/Unitek, American Orthodontics, Morelli, Ortho Technology, and Orthometric) (n=8) were immersed in coffee, Coca-Cola, and red wine for one minute per day, for 28 days; and another group of ligatures was immersed in artificial saliva. All samples were photographed and subsequently analyzed using the Adobe Photoshop software, by the RGB method. Afterwards, the pigmented ligatures were inserted in a patient wearing orthodontic brackets, and zoomed photographs of the smile were taken and presented to 40 evaluators, who filled in a satisfaction scale sheet to express their opinion on the smile aesthetics of each photograph. The color data were subjected to analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey tests. RESULTS: The substance with the highest pigmentation potential was coffee (p< 0.05) followed by red wine (p< 0.05). Comparison among the brands used in this study showed that American Orthodontics and Orthometric had the lowest degree of pigmentation when immersed in coffee and red wine (p< 0.05), respectively. However, the brand that showed the highest level of satisfaction among the evaluators was Ortho Technology. CONCLUSIONS: The presence of pigmented elastomeric ligatures affected smile aesthetics, when compared with the control group.

Abstract Objectives: to evaluate the morbidity and mortality profile and factors associated with death due to severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) by COVID-19 in pregnant and postpartum women. Methods: this is a quantitative and retrospective research that analyzed the SIVEP-gripe Database (Influenza Epidemiological Surveillance Information System), from 01/01/2020 to 04/01/2021. All pregnant women and postpartum women diagnosed with SARS caused by COVID-19 in the State of Minas Gerais were included. After the descriptive analysis of the hospitalizations profile, the association between different exposure variables and the occurrence of death was evaluated. Results: of the 227 records obtained, 94.3% required hospitalization. Among hospitalizations in the Intensive Care Unit, 29.8% used invasive ventilatory support. Fifteen deaths were recorded. The most frequent clinical manifestations were: cough and fever; the predominant comorbidities were cardiovascular disease and diabetes mellitus. The variables "ICU stay", "use of ventilatory support" and "heart disease" were associated with the occurrence of deaths. Conclusions: hospitalization was necessary for most pregnant women with SARS and the presence of previous heart disease increased the risk of death. Knowing the SARS morbidity and mortality profile is important in the definition of public health strategies aimed at reducing the impacts of COVID-19 during pregnancy and the puerperium.

RESUMEN

ABSTRACT Aim: To assess the influence of elastomeric ligatures, subjected to a previous in vitro pigmentation process using different substances, on smile aesthetics during orthodontic treatment, from the perception of students and professionals.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of temperature variation on surface microhardness and resistance to flexion of different materials used for making a temporary dental disocclusion. METHODS: One hundred specimens were made of the following materials (n=20): glass ionomer cement (GIC); compomer (CP); composite resin (CR); Blue colour resin composite for temporary dental disocclusion (BTDD); ultraviolet colour resin composite for temporary dental disocclusion (UVTDD). They were stored in distilled water for 24hours and, subsequently, half of the specimens in each group were subjected to thermal cycling (n=10). All samples were subjected to the microhardness test (HMV-2000) and the flexural strength analysis (INSTRON). The data were submitted to parametric statistical analysis (ANOVA) and Tukey's complementary test with a significance level of 5%. In the mechanical tests, all materials except the GIC showed a statistically significant difference between the groups subjected to thermal cycling and not submitted, and thermal cycling (P<0.05) was responsible for the reduction of the values found, except for GIC. RESULTS: In the mechanical tests, all materials except the GIC showed a statistically significant difference between the groups subjected to thermal cycling and not submitted, and thermal cycling (P<0.05) was responsible for the reduction of the values found, except for GIC. For microhardness, the highest average was found for BTDD and UVTDD (P≤0.05). As for the resistance, the flexion was found that in the groups not submitted to thermal cycling there was no statistically significant difference for all materials, except for GIC, for the groups with thermal cycling the materials BTDD and UVTDD showed a statistically significant difference from GIC, however, they did not differ statistically from the CP and CR groups. CONCLUSION: BTDD and UVTDD presented higher average results of surface microhardness and, in the resistance test, the flexion of these materials behaved similarly to the CP and the CR studied. The temperature variation has an effect on the properties of these materials.

RESUMEN

The present study was evaluated the effect of different light activation and thermocycling methods on the shear bond strength (SBS) and on the adhesive remnant index (ARI) of metal brackets bonded to feldspathic ceramic. Hundred metal brackets were bonded to 20 porcelain cylinders, divided into four groups (n=25) based on light activation and thermocycling processes. The cylinders were etched with 10% hydrofluoric acid for 60 s and coated with two layers of silane. The brackets were bonded with Transbond XT composite resin. Light activation in Groups 1 and 3 was performed during 3 s using the VALO Ortho Cordless appliance with irradiance 3,200 mW/cm2 and in Groups 2 and 4 for 40 s using Optilight Max appliance with irradiance 1,200 mW/cm². The samples were stored in deionized water at 37°C for 24 h and the samples from Groups 1 and 2 were submitted to the SBS test at a rate of 1 mm/min, whereas the samples from Groups 3 and 4 were submitted to 7,000 thermal cycles (5°/55°C) before to the SBS test. The data were assessed by two-way analysis of variance and by Tukey's test (a=0.05). No significant difference was observed between SBS means in the different light activation devices used. The samples subjected to thermocycling revealed lower SBS values (p≤0.05). There was predominance of score 0 for ARI in all groups. Therefore, the different light activation methods did not interfere in SBS, but thermocycling reduced SBS.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to compare the force of aesthetic wires and their non-aesthetic equivalents from two commercial brands at different displacement points, during the unloading phase at 36°C. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty samples (n=10) were assessed, which were presented in two groups of aesthetic wires and two groups of non-aesthetic wires from the brands GAC® (Dentsply GAC® International, NY, USA) and Aditek®(Cravinhos, SP, Brazil), with 0.016-inch gauge. The orthodontic wires were maintained at a temperature of 36°C throughout the experiment and they were subjected to the three-point bending test at a speed of 1mm/min. The unloading values were recorded as 0.5, 1.5, and 2.5mm of displacement. The data were subjected to Student's t-test and unequal variance t test, at 5% significance level. RESULTS: During the unloading phase, the mean force was significantly higher for aesthetic wires than non-aesthetic ones, in the deflection of 2.5mm, presenting values means of 2.25N (P=.0213). In deflections of 0.5mm and 1.5mm, the orthodontic archwires did not show significant differences in force between the thermally activated wires with aesthetic coating and their non-aesthetic equivalents (P≥0.05). CONCLUSION: It is concluded that during the unloading phase at a temperature of 36°C, the orthodontic archwires analyzed did not show significant difference in force between thermally activated wires with aesthetic coating and their non-aesthetic equivalents at most displacement points analysed, except for the deflection of 2.5mm, which showed higher values.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Use fluorescence analysis to evaluate the effect of polishing and surface sealant on the color of composite resin bleached with carbamide peroxide and subjected to staining. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-eight composite resin specimens (Z250/Z350XT) were fabricated. After 24 hours stored in distilled water, all specimens were submitted to in situ bleaching with 16% home peroxide for 8 hours daily for a period of 14 days. Subsequently specimens were separated in three groups according to surface treatment proposed (group 1-polishing Sof-Lex; group 2-BisCover; group 3-control). After this, all the specimens were stained with red wine. A spectrofluorometer was used to evaluate the fluorescence in two readouts (L0-after surface treatment and L1-after staining).Data were analyzed by applying ANOVA using a statistical software program. RESULTS: No differences were shown for the factor treatment and other interactions. The lowest mean fluorescence value was found for Z350XT resin (1759.18 ± 0.13) when compared with Z250 (6863.92 ± 0.13). There was significant difference in the mean fluorescence values for all surface treatments between the two different readouts L0 (4820.93 ± 0.05) and L1 (3802.17 ± 0.05). CONCLUSION: The results suggested that all surface treatments proposed did not influenced the results of wine staining of bleached resins when compared with the control evaluated by the fluorescence method. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The purposes of this research was to find solutions, by means of surfaces treatment, to achieve restorations with a satisfactory and similar final aspect in relation to the teeth, and avoid discrepancies related to the esthetics and longevity of the restoration.
