RESUMEN

The distribution of epidermal growth factor receptors (EGFR) and receptors for steroid hormones--androgens (RA), estrogens (RE) and glucocorticoids (RG) was studied in malignant (MT) and benign (BT) tumors in children. The distribution and mean levels of some receptors in normal tissues were statistically different from those in MT and BT. The absence of RA and the high levels of RE > 20 fmol/mg protein and RG > 50 fmol/mg protein were typical of MT whereas BT might be characterized by the high levels of EGFR > 300 fmol/mg protein. In MT with and without metastases, the following parameters were significantly different (p < 0.001): RG = 81 and 18 fmol/mg, respectively, and EGFR = 160 and 58 fmol/mg protein, respectively. The most informative parameters for distinguishing BT and MT appeared to be RA (0.086 dit), RE (0.043 dit) and EGFR (0.037 dit). The most sensitive parameter for MT was RG, which, however, is least specific; RA is most specific (75%). The optimal amount of three parameters: RA + RE + EGFR (88.4%) is most exact for differential diagnosis.

RESUMEN

123 lung carcinoids were studied, 32 of them electron-microscopically. Ultrastructural features were evaluated with the use of multivariate analysis. The most informative ultrastructural features were the following: correlation between differentiated and undifferentiated cells, the number of cytoplasm organoids including endocrine granules, degree of nuclei polymorphism and their size, specialized contacts, mitoses. Up to 18% of carcinoids, on the average, need ultrastructural verification of the anaplasia degree, this percentage increasing to 27.2% in atypical carcinoids. The above ultrastructural criteria allow to specify malignant potential of carcinoids, facilitate differential diagnosis and make their prognosis.

RESUMEN

Based on an analysis of clinical and laboratory investigations of 326 surgical patients the authors have determined 7 most informative factors for the development of venous thrombosis. On their basis a decisive rule has been built which allows individual prognosing of postoperative phlebothrombosis of lower extremities with 76% of reliability.

RESUMEN

Seven most informative prognostic factors were chosen on the basis of analysis of clinical and laboratory investigation done with the use of modern computer methods: the principal illness character, patient's age, the presence of concomitant cardiovascular disease, obesity, the operative procedure duration, the homeostasis state and the volume of operative procedure. Decisive rule of the individual preoperative prognosis of postoperative venous thrombosis was elaborated and practically used with 76% reliability.

RESUMEN

The presence in the mucous membrane around the tumor of moderate or small amounts of sulfomucins as well as a complete absence of sulfo- and cyalomucins in the tumor cells are indices of a favourable prognosis. Unfavourable factors indicating the probability of rectal carcinoma recurrence after the operation are as follows: the presence in the tumour cells of a moderate amount of cyalomucins and/or a small amount of sulfomucins as well as a complete absence of sulfomucins in the mucous membrane near tumour. The rule for the individual prognosis has been worked out. Its statistical significance is 80%.

RESUMEN

Multifactorial analysis of the prognostic diagnosis of 39 main clinical, morphological and ultrastructural traits in 109 patients with rectum carcinoma is performed on the basis of computer EC-1045/230 program and algorithmic complex. The optimal complex of the traits is established possessing the maximum information value for prognosis of the 2-, 3- and 5-year survival of patients with this tumour. Three rules are formed for the individual prognosis of a favourable and unfavourable issue of the disease after the radical surgery. The value (in %) of these rules for the prognosis was determined: 79,86 and 92% for the 2-, 3- and 5-year survival, respectively. This is the precision with which one or another prognosis can be predicted.

RESUMEN

A procedure based on multifactorial evaluation of the most important clinical and X-ray signs was suggested to differentiate between secondary bone chondrosarcoma and such benign lesions as chondroma and osteochondrous exostosis. The analysis included 100 patients with secondary bone chondrosarcoma and 36 of those with benign lesions. The study used complex parameters derived from two, three or four simple ones. The method described assured a 95% credibility of differential diagnosis.

RESUMEN

Results of epidemiological evaluation of different risk factors underlying spontaneous abortion are discussed. Based on the mathematical analysis of examination findings in women in the course of pregnancy and at its termination (at term and preterm), major risk factors and abnormality patterns were established in all followed-up pregnancies as well as in the nonparous group. The informative value and the degree of risk of factors and conditions affecting preterm pregnancy termination are delineated.

RESUMEN

The results of radiation therapy of 117 patients with squamous cell lung carcinoma taking into account yearly survival were analyzed. Clinico-laboratory and roentgenological factors of prognosis were identified. The use of methods of mathematical statistics and a method of structural risk minimization made it possible to work out a decision rule permitting prognosis of yearly outcome of disease with the minimal probability of 72% even before the start of radiation therapy.

RESUMEN

Solution rules in the form of differential-diagnostic tables with coefficients of weight and threshold values of 16 different signs were obtained with the help of a computer EC-assisted algorithm of a generalized picture. These signs included tumor antigens, cyclonucleotides and hormones determined in the blood serum of healthy individuals, stomach cancer patients and patients with diseases of nonmalignant origin. These signs being of low informative value by themselves, in a combined use provided an opportunity to differentiate between "stomach cancer-not cancer" with a sufficiently high degree of significance.

RESUMEN

A study of individual and family histories of 200 ovarian cancer patients and 200 healthy controls was concerned with evaluation of 274 factors of risk. It yielded 36 most informative ones. An 80% credibility of screening results was demonstrated when a combination of characteristics was used. Decision rule is recommended as a test for formation of a group at high risk.

RESUMEN

A procedure for individual prognosis of surgical treatment of large bowel cancer based on certain clinico-morphological factors is discussed. The procedure is based on the criterion of three-year survival. Computer was used in the evaluation of the prognostic value of each factor using the data available at the Center. The most informative factors were selected to develop a model which gives a reliable prognosis for each case. Application of a multivariate statistical method yielded an optimal combination of prognostic factors and a decision rule was constructed. The credibility of the rule as evaluated on the basis of an additional sample proved to be 91.4%.

RESUMEN

The predictive value of risk factors of stomach cancer was studied on the basis of the results of a complex genetico-epidemiologic survey conducted with a view to identifying the group at risk. An optimal combination of these factors and the multifactor method of mathematical statistics were used in working out a decision instruction. Application of the latter offers an 80% credibility in selecting persons at high risk for stomach cancer development. The paper deals with the findings on a significant relationship between stomach cancer development and genetic and familial factors as well as on indications at certain changes in gastrointestinal function observed before clinical manifestation of the disease. The results point to the efficacy of complex clinical, genetic and epidemiologic studies conducted for prediction of neoplasms caused by a set of factors.
