RESUMEN
The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to assess whether the presence of inferior third molars during sagittal split mandibular ramus osteotomy increases the risk of intraoperative and postoperative complications. The PRISMA protocol was followed in this study, and the review was registered in the PROSPERO database (CRD42020147642). A search was conducted in the MEDLINE (PubMed), Web of Science, Cochrane Central, and Scopus databases on November 1, 2021. Nineteen articles were included, and the variables analysed were unfavourable fractures, infection, neurosensory disturbance, removal of osteosynthesis material, and duration of surgery. Meta-analyses were performed for the variables unfavourable fractures (risk ratio (RR) 0.95, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.58-1.57, P = 0.84), infection (RR 0.75, 95% CI 0.48-1.18, P = 0.21), and neurosensory disturbance (RR 1.55, 95% CI 0.61-3.91, P = 0.35); no statistically significant difference in the risk of these variables was found between the groups with and without third molars. The third molars did not increase the need to remove fixation material, but increased the surgery time. The presence of the third molar during sagittal split mandibular ramus osteotomy appears not to increase the risk of intraoperative and postoperative complications. The results presented here must be interpreted with caution due to the heterogeneity presented by the observational studies included.

We examined the effects of including sunflower cake (SC) associated with an enzyme complex (EC) in the diet of meat quails on nutrient metabolism, performance, carcass characteristics, bone parameters and economic viability. In total, 432 meat quails (7 to 42 days old) were assigned to six treatments in a completely randomised design with 6 replicates with 12 birds each. A 2 × 3 factorial arrangement was adopted (two levels of SC: 10 and 20%; three diet formulation strategies: normal, reduction in the nutrient and energy matrix considering the enzymatic contribution and reduced diet with EC). No interaction effect was observed. The increased levels of SC from 10% to 20% promoted in decrease in the metabolisability coefficients of dry matter and gross energy and in the value of AMEn and increased relative weight of gizzard. The addition of EC in diets containing SC allows a better metabolization of nitrogen and energy, equalize to the normal diet. The best breast yield was obtained in the birds fed the reduced diet with EC, in relation to normal diet. The reduced diet and the reduced diet with EC provided the lowest cost of food and the best economic efficiency index. Up to 20% of the sunflower cake can be included in the diet of cut quail, with or without enzyme supplementation. However, the use of the enzyme complex composed of carbohydrases, proteases and phytase can favor the metabolization of nitrogen and energy from the diet containing sunflower cake.

Anacardic acid is naturally found in various parts of the cashew tree (Anacardium occidentale L.) and marketed as calcium anacardate. This product has antibacterial, antifungal and antioxidant activity, and has been used in humans in the treatment and prevention of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases and tumors. In meat and egg production systems, anacardic acid is used as a substitute for growth-promoting antibiotics. The study objective was to evaluate effects of adding calcium anacardate as source of anacardic acid in laying Japanese quail diet on bird performance and eggs quality. A total of 252 Japanese quail with 22 week-old were studied, using a completely randomized design composed of six treatments with six replicates and seven quails per experimental unit. Treatments applied were: diet without growth promoter; diet with 0,1% growth promoter; and four diets without growth promoter and addition of 0.25; 0.50; 0.75 and 1.0% calcium anacardate (CA), respectively. The data were submitted to analysis of variance and treatment means compared with a SNK test (5%). The data from treatments containing CA were submitted to regression analysis. Treatments did not influence feed intake, egg production, egg weight, egg volume, feed conversion ratio and eggs quality parameters. The addition up to 1% of calcium anacardate in laying Japanese quail diet, does not influence their performance and egg quality.

Synthetic antioxidants (e.g.butylhydroxytoluene, BHT) are routinely used for to restrict oxidative processes of meat products, but they are implicated as harmful to the health of humans. Therefore natural alternatives, such as plant antioxidants, have been sought as replacements. Plant antioxidants when added to the diet can be incorporated into meat and reduce the need for the addition of synthetic antioxidants during processing. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of ethanol extracts of mango seeds (EEMS) in the diet of pigs on qualitative parameters and total antioxidant capacity of mortadella produced from these animals. Thirty-two pigs with an average 60 days of age were distributed among four treatments: control=no antioxidant; BHT=200ppm BHT; EEMS200=200ppm of EEMS and EEMS400=400ppm of EEMS. At 145 days of age the animals were slaughtered and loin was removed for the preparation of mortadella, which was analyzed during 90 days of storage at 4°C. A higher content of polyphenolic compounds and, total antioxidant capacity in mortadellas processed with meat of animals which consumed the EEMS400 ration after 60 and 90 days of storage was observed. EEMS polyphenolic antioxidants incorporated into pork through the diet results in an increase of total antioxidant capacity in the processed product.

Ovarian cancer (OvCA) is the most lethal neoplasia among gynecologic malignancies and faces high rates of new cases particularly in South America. In special, the High Grade Serous Ovarian Carcinoma (HGSC) presents very poor prognosis with deaths caused mainly by metastasis. Among several mechanisms involved in metastasis, the Epithelial to Mesenchymal Transition (EMT) molecular reprogramming represents a model for latest stages of cancer progression. EMT promotes important cellular changes in cellular adhesion and cell-cell communication, which particularly depends on the paracrine signaling from neighbor cells. Considering the importance of cellular communication during EMT and metastasis, here we analyzed the changes in the secretome of the ovarian cancer cell line Caov-3 induced to EMT by Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF). Using a combination of GEL-LC-MS/MS and stable isotopic metabolic labelling (SILAC), we identified up-regulated candidates during EMT as a starting point to identify relevant proteins for HGSC. Based on public databases, our candidate proteins were validated and prioritized for further analysis. Importantly, several of the protein candidates were associated with cellular vesicles, which are important to the cell-cell communication and metastasis. Furthermore, the association of candidate proteins with gene expression data uncovered a subset of proteins correlated with the mesenchymal subtype of ovarian cancer. Based on this relevant molecular signature for aggressive ovarian cancer, supported by protein and gene expression data, we developed a targeted proteomic method to evaluate individual OvCA clinical samples. The quantitative information obtained for 33 peptides, representative of 18 proteins, was able to segregate HGSC from other tumor types. Our study highlighted the richness of the secretome and EMT to reveal relevant proteins for HGSC, which could be used in further studies and larger patient cohorts as a potential stratification signature for ovarian cancer tumor that could guide clinical conduct for patient treatment.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of Syzygium cumini leaves (SCL) in laying hens diets on productive performance, egg quality and lipid oxidation of yolk. A total of 108 Hysex White laying hens were distributed in a completely randomized design with three treatments and six replicates of six birds each. The treatments consisted of SCL inclusion at dietary levels of 0, 5 and 10 g/kg. There was no significant effect of SCL inclusion on feed intake, laying percentage, weight and egg mass, feed conversion ratio, Haugh units, specific gravity, percentage of yolk, albumen and egg shells and shell thickness. However, the inclusion of SCL significantly influenced the yolk color and yolk lipid oxidation measured by TBARS values. Yolk color increased and TBARS values ââdecreased with the inclusion of SCL. The inclusion of SCL in laying hens diets improves pigmentation and lipid stability of yolk.

ABSTRACT Two trials were aimed to evaluate beef tallow in diets with and without emulsifier on performance of pigs at growing-finishing phases. In the first trial, 15 barrows (22.03±0.62 kg) were distributed among three treatments: reference diet; test diet 1 (5% beef tallow) and test diet 2 (10% beef tallow). Beef tallow presented average value of 7130.97 kcal ME/kg. For the performance trail, 30 barrows (24.85±1.18 kg) were distributed among five treatments: T1 - diet with soybean oil and 3230 kcal ME /kg; T2 - diet with beef tallow and 3230 kcal ME/kg; T3 - diet with beef tallow and 3080 kcal ME/kg; T4 - diet with beef tallow, 3080 kcal/kg and 0.1% emulsifier; T5 - diet with beef tallow, 2930 kcal ME/kg and 0.1% emulsifier. Feed conversion was worse in animals fed diet with 3080 kcal ME/kg containing beef tallow and with 2930 kcal ME/kg with beef tallow and emulsifier. For economic availability, animals fed diet with beef tallow and 3230 kcal ME/kg and those fed diet with 3080 kcal ME/kg containing beef tallow and emulsifier, did not differ from animals fed diet with soybean oil, which enables the reduction up to 150 kcal ME/kg be compensated by emulsifier addition.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to evaluate patients undergoing placement of zygomatic implants by Stella and Warner's technique, considering the survival rate of conventional and zygomatic implants, and assess the health of the maxillary sinuses and the level of patient satisfaction. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, 28 patients had received a combination of conventional and zygomatic implants (group I) and 14 were rehabilitated with only conventional implants (group II). RESULTS: The results showed that Stella and Warner's technique, thought to minimize the presence of the implant into the maxillary sinus, improving the emergence of the implant, proved to be effective, allowing a high survival rate of conventional and zygomatic implants (100 %). The follow-up period ranged from a minimum of 15 months to a maximum of 53 months after prosthetic rehabilitation (average of 34 months). No pathological changes were found on the periimplant tissues. Radiographs showed satisfactory bone levels in conventional implants of oral rehabilitation with zygomatic implants and a good positioning of the apex of the zygomatic implants in relation to the zygomatic bone. The tomographic findings revealed no characteristics of sinus disease. There were no cases of obstruction of the maxillary sinus ostium. CONCLUSIONS: The placement of zygomatic implants by Stella and Warner's technique proved to be a predictable technique with high implant survival rate in patients with atrophic maxilla and was not associated with sinus disease in the sample analyzed. However, a long-term follow-up is necessary to confirm the initial findings of this study.

The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of arsenic, lead and cadmium residues in samples of liver, kidney and muscle of poultry and swine during the years from 2002 to 2008. A total of 1978 samples were analyzed: 1031 of poultry and 947 of swine from Brazilian slaughterhouses. The samples were analyzed at the National Agricultural Laboratory using the atomic absorption spectrometry technique. In poultry, the arsenic residues were detected in 53.6% of liver samples, although no results have exceeded the MRL. In kidneys, 39.7% of the samples showed measurable residues and there was no violation of the limits. Regarding lead, there were 5 contaminated liver samples and 24 contaminated kidney samples (1.5 and 3.6% respectively). In muscle tissue there was only one sample with residues. For cadmium, 3.8% of the samples were found below MRL. Cadmium residues were found in 110 kidney samples (16.3% of tested), but only one exceeded the legislation limits. In swine, arsenic residues were detected in 15.3% of liver samples, although no results exceeded the MRL. In kidneys, 14.2% of samples showed measurable residues. However, there was no violation of limits. Regarding lead levels, 7 liver samples and 18 kidney samples were contaminated (2.6 and 2.7% respectively). Cadmium was found below MRL in 14.9% of the analyzed samples. In kidneys, 448 samples (67.8% of the total tested) had cadmium residues and 4 samples exceeded the legislation limits. During the seven years of study (2002-2008), only 5 (0.25%) out of 1978 tested samples violated the Brazilian law. However, even with low levels of violation, monitoring is essential, since the number of samples with residues was often greater than the number of violations, and in some cases, such as cadmium in the kidneys, the majority of samples contained quantifiable residues and with levels often near the limits.(AU)

Production of ethanol with two corn endophytic fungi, Fusarium verticillioides and Acremonium zeae, was studied. The yield of ethanol from glucose, xylose and a mixture of both sugars were 0.47, 0.46 and 0.50g/g ethanol/sugar for F. verticillioides and 0.37, 0.39 and 0.48g/g ethanol/sugar for A. zeae. Both fungi were able to co-ferment glucose and xylose. Ethanol production from 40g/L of pre-treated sugarcane bagasse was 4.6 and 3.9g/L for F. verticillioides and A. zeae, respectively, yielding 0.31g/g of ethanol per consumed sugar. Both fungi studied were capable of co-fermenting glucose and xylose at high yields. Moreover, they were able to produce ethanol directly from lignocellulosic biomass, demonstrating to be suitable microorganisms for consolidated bioprocessing.

Lipid rafts are highly ordered membrane domains rich in cholesterol and sphingolipids that provide a scaffold for signal transduction proteins; altered raft structure has also been implicated in cancer progression. We have shown that 25 µm 10-(octyloxy) decyl-2-(trimethylammonium) ethyl phosphate (ODPC), an alkylphospholipid, targets high cholesterol domains in model membranes and induces apoptosis in leukemia cells but spares normal hematopoietic and epithelial cells under the same conditions. We performed a quantitative (SILAC) proteomic screening of ODPC targets in a lipid-raft-enriched fraction of leukemic cells to identify early events prior to the initiation of apoptosis. Six proteins, three with demonstrated palmitoylation sites, were reduced in abundance. One, the linker for activation of T-cell family member 2 (LAT2), is an adaptor protein associated with lipid rafts in its palmitoylated form and is specifically expressed in B lymphocytes and myeloid cells. Interestingly, LAT2 is not expressed in K562, a cell line more resistant to ODPC-induced apoptosis. There was an early loss of LAT2 in the lipid-raft-enriched fraction of NB4 cells within 3 h following treatment with 25 µm ODPC. Subsequent degradation of LAT2 by proteasomes was observed. Twenty-five µm ODPC inhibited AKT activation via myeloid growth factors, and LAT2 knockdown in NB4 cells by shRNA reproduced this effect. LAT2 knockdown in NB4 cells also decreased cell proliferation and increased cell sensitivity to ODPC (7.5×), perifosine (3×), and arsenic trioxide (8.5×). Taken together, these data indicate that LAT2 is an early mediator of the anti-leukemic activity of alkylphospholipids and arsenic trioxide. Thus, LAT2 may be used as a target for the design of drugs for cancer therapy.

A method for the determination of As, Cd and Pb in bovine, equine and poultry liver by ICP-MS was developed and validated. Samples were digested in a microwave oven using a 10% HNO(3) solution. A set of experiments was made according to a central composite design (CCD) for optimisation of the plasma argon flow, nebuliser argon flow and radiofrequency power applied to the plasma. During the validation, Rh and Ru were evaluated as internal standards and, after validation, the best was Rh for Pb and Cd analysis, but for As better results were obtained without an internal standard. The method allowed As, Cd and Pb determination with a 3.3% HNO(3) solution for the calibration curves ranging from 0 to 40 µg l(-1) for As and from 0 to 20 µg l(-1) for Cd and Pb. The recovery values obtained showed averages of 100%, 106% and 96% for As, Cd and Pb, respectively. Limits of quantification obtained were 85 µg kg(-1) for As, 6.5 µg kg(-1) for Cd and 12.5 µg kg(-1) for Pb. Repeatability and within-laboratory reproducibility were evaluated through the indicators HORRAT(r) and HORRAT(R), and the results were less than 0.30. The method is simple, fast and showed adequate precision and accuracy for the determination of As, Cd and Pb in bovine, equine and poultry liver. The precision, recovery, uncertainties, and limits of detection and quantification for each analyte were in accordance to European Union Commission Regulation 2007/333/EC.

A variety of injectable permanent fillers have been used in orofacial tissues for cosmetic purposes. Most of these substances seem to be well tolerated but adverse reactions have been reported. Foreign body granulomas are a rare adverse reaction to injectable permanent fillers. The authors report the unusual case of a 56-year-old woman with a foreign body granuloma located exclusively in the oral cavity that was due to injection of a permanent filler.

A hipercolesterolemia é um dos principais fatores de risco para doenças cardiovasculares. Avaliamos os níveis de colesterol total em três cidades do Paraná Douradina, Cianorte e Guaíra. Douradina apresenta de um modo geral característica mais voltada para o cotidiano rural. Realidade diferente foi constatada em Cianorte, considerada hoje um pólo industrial. Guaíra é uma região preparada para o turismo e com grande atividade comercial. Foram analisadas amostras de 600 indivíduos, sendo 200 de cada localidade,distribuídos previamente em diferentes faixas etárias e gênero. Em Douradina observaram-se as menores taxas de colesterol (186,9 ± 2,9 mg/dl), seguido por Cianorte (203,1 ± 1,4 mg/dl) e Guaíra (219,7 ± 3,2 mg/dl). Concluiu-se que houve uma variação de colesteroltotal nas diferentes cidades, mostrando que hábitos regionais influenciam nos níveis de colesterol total sérico.

The conventional methods for identification and typing of Leishmania species depend on previous culture isolation of the parasites. Not infrequently, culture is unsuccessful and may result in misrepresentation of the heterogeneity of the original isolate. Thus, more reliable and precise identification of genotypes of Leishmania spp. is important for a better clinical and epidemiological understanding of the disease. We evaluated the potential of LSSP-PCR targeting kDNA minicircles in discriminating different variants of the parasite with the use of clinical samples directly or cultivated parasites. The 1st step of this procedure consists of the amplification of the minicircles by conventional PCR; the 2nd step is low-stringency amplification of the minicircles previously amplified, with the use of 1 of the primers. Although LSSP-PCR produced complex and distinct kDNA signatures for isolates representing different species, further experiments demonstrated that the approach had the potential for discriminating intraspecific variants of L. braziliensis. Thus, the generated profiles were too variable to be useful as markers for species identification. Moreover, we demonstrated that the approach can be directly applied to clinical samples. In conclusion, LSSP-PCR targeting kDNA minicircles produces profiles that reflect polymorphisms of the predominant classes of minicircles, and can be useful for studies aimed at discriminating Leishmania braziliensis genotypes without the need for previous cultivation of the parasite.

The fat snook Centropomus parallelus is a tropical estuarine species with importance for recreational and commercial fisheries and further aquaculture potential. Considering ingested energy (C) is channeled into growth (P), metabolic expenditure (R), excretion (U) and feces (F), a balanced energy budget was established for isolated and grouped juvenile C. parallelus (5.18 to 10.25 g wet mass) by experimental quantification of each of these parameters. Fish were fed live prawn (Macrobrachium sp.) at 25 degrees C and 20 per thousand for 19 days and daily energy budgets could be calculated. Energy content of food (live prawn), fish whole body and feces were 17.7, 14.5 and 6.1 KJ g(-1) dry mass (DW), respectively. Mass-specific rates of oxygen consumption and ammonia-N excretion were 0.271 and 0.0082 mg of O(2) or NH(3)-N g(-1) wet mass (WW) h(-1), respectively, resulting in O:N=23.4. Daily ingestion (C) was dependent on the amount of food offered and ranged between 4.9% to 7.4% of initial wet weight. Growth (P) was positively correlated with initial mass varying from 0.008 to 0.104 g day(-1). Feces release also correlated to fish mass and averaged 9.53 mg dry mass day(-1). The components of energy budget showed mean values of 2.39 (C), 0.24 (P), 1.96 (R), 0.11 (U) and 0.06 (F) KJ ind(-1) day(-1). As percentage of ingested energy, C. parallelus channeled 10% in growth (P), 82% in metabolism (R), 4.6% in excretion (U) and 2.5% in feces (F). Gross (K(1)) and net (K(2)) growth efficiencies were 9.2% and 9.9%, respectively. On the course of this period of juvenile development, K(1) and K(2) increased significantly. Partitioning of ingested energy in P, R, U and F was significantly different in individually and group maintained fish (P<0.05). Energy budget of C. parallelus fed a highly digestible diet (live prawn) revealed poor growth and growth efficiencies (K(1) and K(2)) possibly associated with an elevated metabolic demand and a high channeling of metabolized energy (P+R) into metabolism (R) in both isolated and grouped fish. Data can be applied to ecosystem modeling and may contribute to identify species potential to aquaculture.
