RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Social justice is recognized by reputable international organizations as a professional nursing value. However, there are serious doubts as to whether it is embodied in Catalan nursing education. OBJECTIVES: To explore what nursing students take away from two teaching activities led by expert patients (one presentation and three expert patient illness narratives) on the topics of social justice, patient rights, and person-centered care. RESEARCH DESIGN: Qualitative study using a content analysis approach. The research plan included (1) think-pair-share activities (additional faculty-assisted presentation and three faculty-assisted, semi-structured scripted narratives); (2) paired reflections; (3) focus groups; and (4) content analysis of paired reflections and focus groups. PARTICIPANTS AND RESEARCH CONTEXT: Fourth-year nursing degree students at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), Spain. Convenience sampling was used. ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS: The UAB Research Ethics Committee did not deem it necessary to apply any specific measures. We fully explained to patients that they could decide what medical information they would share with the students that was relevant to their learning, and we provided students with guidelines about patient confidentiality, dignity, and respect. FINDINGS/RESULTS: The students engaged in reflection about their education (recognizing that it had been centered on the professional and not the patient) and their relationship with the patient, in which they reproduced low-involvement patient care by modeling behaviors of their nurse educator. Moreover, they valued a person-centered care model with an emphasis on the emotional part but left out decision-making as an individual right of people. CONCLUSIONS: The think-pair-share activities were useful to spark self-reflection among students, who identified aspects to change in their own practice, and reflected about their own education process, both of which promote change.

OBJECTIVES: To validate the American fatigue scale HIV-Related Fatigue Scale (HRFS) and present the Spanish version called Integrated Fatigue Assessment Scale to assess fatigue in HCV and co-infected PATIENTS: Method: Psychometric study with cross-sectional design was used. The HRFS was translated into Spanish using the back-translation method-later to be validated. Participants completed the questionnaire adapted to a self-report form, as well as a sociodemographic questionnaire. The reliability and validity of the Spanish version was evaluated. RESULTS: A total of 7 public service hospitals and two prisons in Catalonia participated in the evaluation. The sample consisted of 122 subjects selected by consecutive sampling in the fourth week of treatment of hepatitis C with combination therapy or triple therapy. The Cronbach alpha for the total scale was 0.958. Content Validity Index (I-CVI) varied from 0.5 to 1. Validity Scale Content-level (S-CVI) was 0.85. Pearson correlations between the three dimensions were between 0.49 and 0.68. CONCLUSIONS: The process followed for the cultural adaptation and validation shows that the Spanish version of the HRFS) is a valid and reliable instrument that can be used in clinical practice and in the investigation of fatigue in patients with hepatitis C (AU)


OBJETIVOS: Realizar la adaptación cultural y validación de la versión española de escala americana HIV-Related Fatigue Scale (HRFS), denominada Escala de Valoración Integral de la Fatiga (EVIF) para pacientes con VHC y/o coinfectados con VIH. MÉTODO: Estudio descriptivo transversal centrado en el analisis de las propiedades psicométricas de la escala de Valoración Integral de la Fatiga (EVIF) para pacientes con VHC y/o coinfectados con VIH. La HRFS ha sido traducida al español usando el método de traducción-retrotraducción para ser validada posteriormente. Los participantes cumplimentan el cuestionario adaptado en forma de autoinforme, además de un cuestionario de variables sociodemográficas. Se evalúan la fiabilidad y la validez de la versión española. RESULTADOS: Participaron 7 hospitales de servicio público y 2 centros penitenciarios de Cataluña. La muestra fue de 122 personas seleccionadas por muestreo consecutivo en la cuarta semana de tratamiento de la hepatitis C con biterapia o triple terapia. El alfa de Cronbach para la escala total fue de 0,958 y el índice de validez de contenido por ítem (I-CVI) fue de 0,5 hasta 1. y el índice de validez de contenido de la escala (S-CVI) fue de 0,85. Las correlaciones de Pearson entre las 3 dimensiones oscilaron entre 0,49 y 0,68. CONCLUSIONES: Tras la adaptación cultural y el proceso de validación se considera que la versión española de la HRFS es un instrumento válido y fiable que se puede utilizar en la práctica clínica enfermera y en la investigación de la fatiga en enfermos con hepatitis C
