RESUMEN

After studying a list of words that are semantically associated to a critical lure, participants are more likely to attribute a falsely recognised critical lure to the context of its strong than weak semantic associates. This is known as the source-strength effect. The current study investigated the roles of automatic and controlled processing in context retrieval in false recognition that is demonstrated by the source-strength effect. The results revealed that the source-strength effect was impervious to forewarning (Experiment 1) and remained intact when attentional resources at encoding were reduced (Experiment 2), suggesting that context retrieval in false recognition is based on automatic processes that are not amenable to conscious control and do not require many attentional resources. This interpretation is consistent with the associative activation theory, which proposes that context retrieval in false recognition is based on memory associations between contexts and critical lures that are automatically created when critical lures become automatically activated via spreading activation process.

This study conducted two experiments to explore the effects of intuitive thinking and social value orientation (SVO) on cooperative behavior and assess the mediating effect of cooperative expectations. It manipulated intuitive thinking by increasing the participants' need for cognitive closure, classified SVO using the triple-dominance measure, measured cooperative behavior using the prisoner's dilemma game, and considered cooperative expectations based on participants' assessments of the cooperativeness of their counterparts. Both experiments showed that intuitive thinking increased and decreased the cooperation of pro-social and pro-self individuals, respectively. In pro-self individuals, cooperative expectations mediated the effect of intuitive thinking on cooperation.

High concentrate (HC) diet feeding leads to the lysis of rumen microbes and the release of hazardous metabolites, which can trigger inflammatory responses, thereby impairing dairy cow health and production. γ-D-glutamyl-meso-diaminopimelic acid (iE-DAP), which constitutes the peptidoglycan (PGN) layer of bacteria, is the minimum PGN structure capable of activating inflammatory signaling pathways. This research paper aimed to determine the iE-DAP concentration and investigate the effects of an HC diet on the concentration of iE-DAP in the rumen fluid of dairy cows. However, there are limited studies on the determination of iE-DAP concentration. Hence, we established a high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method combined with pre-column chiral derivatization to detect the concentration of iE-DAP in rumen fluid. Moreover, we conducted an animal experiment that included 12 lactating Holstein cows, which were randomly divided into a low-concentrate (LC) group and an HC group. The results showed that the linear range of iE-DAP was 5-500 µg/mL and that the intra- and inter-day RSDs were lower than 7%. Meanwhile, this method was successfully applied to the analysis of iE-DAP in rumen fluid, and the results revealed that long-term feeding with an HC diet elevated the concentration of iE-DAP in rumen fluid of dairy cows.

BACKGROUND: Long-term high-concentrate (HC) diet feeding increased bacterial endotoxins, which translocated into the mammary glands of dairy goats and induced inflammatory response. γ-d-Glutamyl-meso-diaminopimelic acid (iE-DAP), bacterial peptidoglycan component, triggered inflammatory response through activating nucleotide oligomerization domain protein 1 (NOD1) signaling pathway. While dietary supplemented with sodium butyrate (SB) relieved inflammatory response and improved animal health and production. To investigate the effects and the mechanisms of action of SB on the inflammatory response in the mammary glands of dairy goats fed HC diet, 12 Saanen dairy goats were randomly assigned into HC group and SB regulated (BHC) group. RESULTS: The results showed that SB supplementation attenuated ruminal pH decrease caused by HC diet in dairy goats resulting in a decrease of proinflammatory cytokines and iE-DAP plasma concentration and the mRNA expression of NOD1 and other inflammation-related genes. The protein levels of NOD1, NF-κB p65 and NF-κB pp65 were decreased by the SB supplementation. The expression of histone deacetylase 3 (HDAC3) was also inhibited by the SB supplementation. Meanwhile, the chromatin compaction ratios and DNA methylation levels of NOD1 and receptor-interacting protein 2 (RIP2) of BHC group were upregulated. CONCLUSION: Collectively, the SB supplementation mitigated the inflammatory response in the mammary glands of dairy goats during HC-induced subacute ruminal acidosis (SARA) by inhibiting the activation of the NOD1/NF-κB signaling pathway through the decrease of the iE-DAP concentration in the rumen fluid and plasma and HDAC3 expression. DNA methylation and chromatin remodeling also contributed to the anti-inflammatory effect of SB. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry.

Autophagy is a crucial cellular homeostatic process and an important part of the host defense system. Dysfunction in autophagy enhances tissue susceptibility to infection and multiple diseases. However, the role of nucleotide oligomerization domain 1 (NOD1) in autophagy in bovine hepatocytes is not well known. Therefore, our aim was to study the contribution of NOD1 to autophagy during inflammation in response to a specific ligand γ-d-glutamyl-meso-diaminopimelic acid (iE-DAP). To achieve this aim, hepatocytes separated from cows at ∼160 days in milk (DIM) were divided into six groups: the nontreated control (CON) group, the rapamycin-treated (RAP) group as a positive control, the iE-DAP-treated (DAP) group, the 3-MA-treated (MA) group, the rapamycin with 3-MA (RM) group, and the iE-DAP with 3-MA (DM) group. iE-DAP administration significantly increased the mRNA expression of NOD1, ATG16L1, RIPK2, ULK1, AMBRA1, DFCP1, WIPI1, ATG5, ATG7, ATG10, ATG4A, IκBα, NF-κB, CXCL1, IL-8, and STAT6 and significantly decreased PIK3C3. The protein expression of NOD1, p-IκBα, p-NF-κB/p-p65, LC3-II, ATG5, and beclin 1 were significantly upregulated and that of SQSTM1/p62, p-mTOR, and FOXA2 were significantly downregulated in response to iE-DAP. iE-DAP also induced the formation of LC3-GFP autophagic puncta in bovine hepatocytes. We also knocked down the NOD1 with siRNA. NOD1 silencing suppressed the autophagy and inflammation-related genes and proteins. The application of the autophagy inhibitor increased the expression of inflammatory molecules and alleviated autophagy-associated molecules. Taken together, these findings suggest that NOD1 is a key player for regulating both ATG16L1 and RIPK2-ULK1 directed autophagy during inflammation in response to iE-DAP in bovine hepatocytes.

Previous research has demonstrated that some false recognitions are accompanied by retrieval of contexts in which the corresponding semantic associates were presented during the study phase. What kind of neural processes support context retrieval in false recognition? Using functional MRI (fMRI), we tested the hypothesis that context retrieval in false recognition might be supported by brain areas in the core recollection network which also support context retrieval in true recognition. During the study, lists of semantically associated words were presented together with scene pictures that served as contexts. During test, participants judged whether the presented word was old or new. If old, they judged which scene picture was its context and rated memory strength for the context. The results revealed that several regions in the core recollection network, including the bilateral hippocampus, left angular gyrus, and left anterior cingulate cortex, showed greater activations for true recognitions with strong context memory than those with weak context memory. More importantly, these same regions also showed greater activations for false recognitions with strong context memory than those with weak context memory. These findings helped account for why some false recognitions are vivid and accompanied by retrieval of context.

The anti-inflammatory effects of sodium valproate (VPA) in vivo and in vitro have been demonstrated in recent studies. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether VPA can suppress inflammation in bovine mammary epithelial cells (BMECs) stimulated by γ-D-glutamyl-meso-diaminopimelic acid (iE-DAP). First, the concentration and treatment points of iE-DAP and VPA were optimized. Then, BMECs were cultured in complete media and separated into four groups: untreated control cells (CON group), cells stimulated by 10 µg/mL iE-DAP for 6 h (DAP group), cells stimulated by 0.5 mmol/L VPA for 6 h (VPA group), and cells pretreated with VPA (0.5 mmol/L) for 6 h followed by 10 µg/mL of iE-DAP for 6 h (VD group). The results showed that the level of  interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) in the culture medium increased in the iE-DAP-treated cells and that pretreatment with VPA reversed this increase. iE-DAP increased both mRNA and protein expression levels of nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain-containing protein 1 (NOD1) and receptor-interacting protein kinas (RIPK2) and activated inhibitor of NF-κB (IκB) and nuclear factor-kappa B p65 (NF-κB p65) through phosphorylation. Upon activation of the NF-κB pathway, the expression of the pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-6, interleukin-8 (IL-8) and interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß), the acute phase protein serum amyloid A 3 (SAA3) and the lingual antimicrobial peptide (LAP) but not  haptoglobi (HP) or bovine neutrophil beta defensing 5 (BNBD5) were increased in the DAP group. The VPA pretreatment induced the acetylation of signal transducers and activators of transcription(STAT1) and histone 3 (H3) by inhibiting histone deacetylase (HDAC) and then suppressed the NF-κB pathway. Moreover, VPA induced autophagy and reduced apoptosis in BMECs in the VD group. These results suggested that VPA treatment can attenuate the inflammatory response induced by iE-DAP.

Cooperation is an important prosocial behaviour that is of great significance to individuals and society. The social heuristics hypothesis (SHH) systematically explains how cooperation is interactively affected by intuitive and deliberative processes. On the one hand, the intuitive process can be either cooperative or selfish, which is determined by previous experience. On the other hand, the deliberative process could support either a cooperative decision or a selfish decision, depending on which strategy could maximise the current payoff. This research aims to investigate the mechanism of cooperation. Attachment style was selected as a proxy for previous experience to examine whether and how previous life experience shapes intuitive response. Time constraint (Studies 1 and 2) and cognitive load (Study 3) were manipulated to dissociate the intuitive and deliberative processes. In addition, cooperation was assessed by adopting one-shot public goods games. Results showed that attachment avoidance (Studies 1, 2, and 3) and attachment anxiety (Study 3) significantly predicted cooperation in the intuition condition, whereas these associations were insignificant in the deliberation condition (Studies 1, 2, and 3). These findings provide further support for the SHH and shed new light on the mechanism of cooperation.

Previous research has suggested that power undermines cooperation in social dilemmas. However, the story may not be so simple. Guided by recent findings that power heightens sensitivity to unfairness, we examined the moderating effect of distributive justice on the association between power and cooperation. Across two experiments, when treated unfairly, high-power (vs. low-power) participants perceived greater unfairness. Moreover, high-power (vs. low-power) participants behaved less cooperatively not only when they interacted with the offender who treated them unfairly (Experiment 1), but also when they interacted with innocent third parties (Experiment 2). However, high-power and low-power participants showed no difference in perceived fairness and cooperation when treated fairly. These findings shed light on the association between power and cooperation by suggesting the modulating role of distributive justice, and they remind us that researchers should take participants' personal sense of power into account when manipulating fairness.

The anti-inflammatory effects of cis-9, trans-11-conjugated linoleic acid ( cis-9, trans-11-CLA) in diverse cells have been demonstrated in recent studies. The present study was conducted to observe the anti-inflammatory effects and involved mechanisms of CLA in bovine mammary epithelial cells (BMECs) exposed to Escherichia coli. According to the gene expression of IL-6, to optimize the treatment period and dose of CLA, 50 and 100 µM CLA were chosen to pretreat the cells for a period of 48 h. BMECs were exposed to 1 × 107 /mL E. coli for 6 h (ECO group), and cells were pretreated with 50 and 100 µM CLA for 48 h followed by E. coli challenge (C50 and C100 groups). After E. coli challenge, compared with that in the CON group (control group), the gene expressions of pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1ß and IL-6), chemokines (IL-8 and CCL-20), and antimicrobial peptide BNBD5 were increased, while the gene expression of the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10 was decreased significantly; CLA reversed this inflammation effect. Pretreatment with CLA also repressed the secretion of IL-6, IL-8, and TNF-α from BMECs in the culture medium following E. coli challenge. Therefore, cis-9, trans-11-CLA exerted anti-inflammatory effects in BMECs. The cells that were pretreated with CLA expressed remarkably lower levels of phospho-p65, phospho-IκB, and TLR4 and a higher level of PPARγ after E. coli challenge at the gene and protein levels. Compared to that in the ECO group, the nuclear translocation of phospho-p65 was suppressed when CLA was added. Combined with the above results, 50 µM CLA showed a better anti-inflammatory effect. In conclusion, CLA can reduce inflammation caused by E. coli in bovine mammary epithelial cells, and this effect is mediated through the TLR4-NF-κB pathway and PPARγ participation.

Although the influence of stereotype threat (ST) on working self-concepts has been highlighted in recent years, its neural underpinnings are unclear. Notably, the aging ST, which largely influences older adults' cognitive ability, mental and physical health, did not receive much attention. In order to investigate these issues, electroencephalogram (EEG) data were obtained from older adults during a modified Stroop task using neutral words, positive and negative self-concept words in aging ST vs. neutral control conditions. Results showed longer reaction times (RTs) for identifying colors of words under the aging ST compared to the neutral condition. More importantly, the negative self-concept elicited more positive late P300 amplitudes and enhanced theta band activities compared to the positive self-concept or neutral words under the aging ST condition, whereas no difference was found between these self-concepts and neutral words in the control condition. Furthermore, the aging ST induced smaller theta band synchronization and enhanced alpha band synchronization compared to the control condition. Moreover, we also observed valence differences in self-concepts where the negative self-concept words reduced early P150/N170 complex relative to neutral words. These findings suggest that priming ST could activate negative self-concepts as current working self-concept, and that this influence occurred during a late neural time course.

The purpose of this study was to explore the associations between the qualities of different types of relationships in school, social support and loneliness in adolescence. Using a sample (N=1674) of adolescent students randomly selected from middle schools, we found boys' loneliness was influenced by the qualities of opposite-sex, teacher-student and same-sex relationships, whereas girls' loneliness was only influenced by same-sex relationships. Additionally, social support mediated the association between same-sex relationships and teacher-student relationships, and loneliness. Further, the quality of same-sex relationships showed stronger association with boys' loneliness than girls'. Finally, the quality of same-sex relationships showed the strongest association with boys' loneliness comparing with opposite-sex relationships and teacher-student relationships. These findings are discussed to illuminate the possible mechanisms by which interpersonal relationships could influence loneliness. In future research, causal relationships and other influencing factors on loneliness should be examined.
