RESUMEN

This article presents a brief review of current mobile telecommunications systems, which represent a source of microwave pollution of the environment. It has been shown that the biological effects of radiation from cellular telephones involve the time factor for the real effects on the body. Results of studies of the biological effects of low-intensity modulated microwave irradiation, including that from cellular telephones, lead to the conclusion that irradiation does not have pathological effects on the body, but does induce the usual non-specific adaptive reactions. It is only in conditions of serious derangements of the immune system and prolonged exposure with cumulative effects that cancerogenic effects can occur in the body; as in other examples of external influences on the body, this is mediated by disruption of the balance between cellular repair systems and damage, the latter being favored. Several methods for studying low-intensity microwave irradiation are presented; these can be used for investigating its influence on psychophysiological functions in humans.

RESUMEN

Biological effects of the mobile phone microwave radiation were shown to depend on many factors: the duration of the irradiation, individual characteristics of the CNS and immune systems, and others. The cellular phone microwave radiation can induce reversible unspecific adaptive responses if it is short and the organism is very radiosensitive. A long-term exposure (over one year) combined with the organism weakened immune system may produce a cumulative effect in the form of stress responses, various damages and, in some cases, even cancer. The ultimate result of the microwave exposure depends on the balance between induced damage and the organism reparative ability.

RESUMEN

We have found that two important brain synaptic receptor systems are very sensitive to the influence of low intensity microwaves. Both the excitatory glutamatergic and the inhibitory GABAergic are affected by microwave exposure. Power densities higher 50 microW/cm2 caused changes in the binding properties of these receptors to agonists. Low frequence modulation of microwaves was essential for these effects. Statistically significant effects on mean value of binding were observed at 16 Hz modulation. Exposure to microwave radiation changes the binding of agonists to glutamate and GABA receptors in different ways. An increase was observed for glutamate and a decrease for GABA. We suppose that the effect of microwaves is related to the stress reactions of the organism.

RESUMEN

The rabbit ECoG is characterised by alternating active and inhibitory signs. This suggests the necessity to take into consideration individual features and initial states of the rabbit CNS and the dynamics of their changes when studying the effects of various stimuli.
