The sugarcane weevil (Sphenophorus levis Vaurie, 1978) is currently considered the most important sugarcane pest in Brazil, causing significant yield losses. Application methods of insecticides for S. levis control have not been effective, mostly due to the insect's cryptic behavior below the soil surface which suppresses the correct placement of insecticide active ingredients on target. Two experiments were conducted using an innovative bioassay methodology that simulates sugarcane field conditions to effectively evaluate S. levis adult mortality and insecticide residues in the soil under different treatments. The first experiment aimed to assess the efficacy of two liquid- and solid-applied insecticides, while the second aimed to examine the effect of increasing the dose of lambda-cyhalothrin + thiamethoxam on S. levis adult control. The novel bioassays simulated liquid and solid insecticide applications on sugarcane by exposing S. levis adults to chemical residuals on rhizomes and in soil after insecticide application. In the first experiment, low S. levis adult control was detected (< 53% mortality) across all treatments, where both solid and liquid applications of lambda-cyhalothrin + thiamethoxam provided greater efficacy levels than imidacloprid and control treatments, respectively. Solid applications maintained higher insecticide concentrations in the soil for longer periods than liquid insecticide applications, providing maximum insect control levels 7 days after application. The second experiment revealed that solid applications at higher insecticide doses significantly improved control of S. levis adult (76.7% mortality) and resulted in greater insecticide concentrations in the soil compared to the recommended label rate (58.8% mortality).

Successful plant reproduction depends on the adequate development of floral organs controlled by cell proliferation and other processes. The Stigma/style cell-cycle inhibitor 1 (SCI1) gene regulates cell proliferation and affects the final size of the female reproductive organ. To unravel the molecular mechanism exerted by Nicotiana tabacum SCI1 in cell proliferation control, we searched for its interaction partners through semi-in vivo pull-down experiments, uncovering a cyclin-dependent kinase, NtCDKG;2. Bimolecular fluorescence complementation and co-localization experiments showed that SCI1 interacts with NtCDKG;2 and its cognate NtCyclin L in nucleoli and splicing speckles. The screening of a yeast two-hybrid cDNA library using SCI1 as bait revealed a novel DEAD-box RNA helicase (NtRH35). Interaction between the NtCDKG;2-NtCyclin L complex and NtRH35 is also shown. Subcellular localization experiments showed that SCI1, NtRH35, and the NtCDKG;2-NtCyclin L complex associate with each other within splicing speckles. The yeast two-hybrid screening of NtCDKG;2 and NtRH35 identified the conserved spliceosome components U2a', NF-κB activating protein (NKAP), and CACTIN. This work presents SCI1 and its interactors, the NtCDKG;2-NtCyclin L complex and NtRH35, as new spliceosome-associated proteins. Our findings reveal a network of interactions and indicate that SCI1 may regulate cell proliferation through the splicing process, providing new insights into the intricate molecular pathways governing plant development.

Neotropical fishes exhibit remarkable karyotype diversity, whose evolution is poorly understood. Here, we studied genetic differences in 60 individuals, from 11 localities of one species, the wolf fish Hoplias malabaricus, from populations that include six different "karyomorphs". These differ in Y-X chromosome differentiation, and, in several cases, by fusions with autosomes that have resulted in multiple sex chromosomes. Other differences are also observed in diploid chromosome numbers and morphologies. In an attempt to start understanding how this diversity was generated, we analyzed within- and between-population differences in a genome-wide sequence data set. We detect clear genotype differences between karyomorphs. Even in sympatry, samples with different karyomorphs differ more in sequence than samples from allopatric populations of the same karyomorph, suggesting that they represent populations that are to some degree reproductively isolated. However, sequence divergence between populations with different karyomorphs is remarkably low, suggesting that chromosome rearrangements may have evolved during a brief evolutionary time. We suggest that the karyotypic differences probably evolved in allopatry, in small populations that would have allowed rapid fixation of rearrangements, and that they became sympatric after their differentiation. Further studies are needed to test whether the karyotype differences contribute to reproductive isolation detected between some H. malabaricus karyomorphs.

Fire plays a key role in grasslands, determining the distribution and evolution of species and boundaries with neighboring ecosystems. Evidence of community-wide responses to fire is largely based on taxonomic and functional descriptors, while the phylogenetic dimension is overlooked. Here we evaluated how the taxonomic and phylogenetic structure of grassland plant communities responded to a time since fire (TSF) gradient. We sampled 12 communities in Southern Brazil under varying TSF and calculated taxonomic species richness (S) and dominance (D), phylogenetic diversity (PD), and mean phylogenetic distances (MPD). We used Structural Equation Models to test the relationships between the environmental gradient and community descriptors. Communities with longer TSF presented higher PD and MPD but lower species richness and increased taxonomic dominance. These sites were dominated by monocots, specifically C4 grasses, but also presented exclusive clades, whereas recently-burned sites presented lower taxonomic dominance and more species distributed in a wider variety of clades. Our results indicate that these scenarios are interchangeable and dependent on fire management. Fire adaptation was not constrained by phylogenetic relatedness, contrasting with previous findings for tropical savannahs and indicating that temperate and tropical non-forest ecosystems from South America respond differently to fire, possibly due to different evolutionary histories.

OBJECTIVES: to evaluate the morphological and functional characteristics of the peri-implant bone tissue that was formed during the healing process by the placement implants using two different surface treatments: hydrophilic Acqua™ (ACQ) and rough NeoPoros™ (NEO), in spontaneously hypertensive (SHR) and normotensive rats (Wistar) whether or not treated with losartan. METHODOLOGY: In total, 96 male rats (48 Wistar and 48 SHR) were divided into eight subgroups: absolute control rough (COA NEO), absolute control hydrophilic (COA ACQ), losartan control rough (COL NEO), losartan control hydrophilic (COL ACQ), SHR absolute rough (SHR NEO), SHR absolute hydrophilic (SHR ACQ), SHR losartan rough (SHRL NEO), and SHR losartan hydrophilic (SHRL ACQ). The rats medicated with losartan received daily doses of the medication. NeoPoros™ and Acqua™ implants were installed in the tibiae of the rats. After 14 and 42 days of the surgery, the fluorochromes calcein and alizarin were injected in the rats. The animals were euthanized 67 days after treatment. The collected samples were analyzed by immunohistochemistry, biomechanics, microcomputerized tomography, and laser confocal scanning microscopy analysis. RESULTS: The osteocalcin (OC) and vascular endothelium growth factor (VEGF) proteins had moderate expression in the SHRL ACQ subgroup. The same subgroup also had the highest implant removal torque. Regarding microarchitectural characteristics, a greater number of trabeculae was noted in the control animals that were treated with losartan. In the bone mineralization activity, it was observed that the Acqua™ surface triggered higher values of MAR (mineral apposition rate) in the COA, COL, and SHRL groups (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: the two implant surface types showed similar responses regarding the characteristics of the peri-implant bone tissue, even though the ACQ surface seems to improve the early stages of osseointegration.

Study objective: To evaluate the cost-effectiveness of EtCO2 monitoring during in-hospital cardiorespiratory arrest (CA) care outside the intensive care unit (ICU) and emergency room department. Design: We performed a cost-effectiveness analysis based on a simple decision model cost analysis and reported the study using the CHEERS checklist. Model inputs were derived from a retrospective Brazilian cohort study, complemented by information obtained through a literature review. Cost inputs were gathered from both literature sources and contacts with hospital suppliers. Setting: The analysis was carried out from the perspective of a tertiary referral hospital in a middle-income country. Participants: The study population comprised individuals experiencing in-hospital CA who received cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) by rapid response team (RRT) in a hospital ward, not in the ICU or emergency room department. Interventions: Two strategies were assumed for comparison: one with an RRT delivering care without capnography during CPR and the other guiding CPR according to the EtCO2 waveform. Main outcome measures: Incremental cost-effectiveness rate (ICER) to return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC), hospital discharge, and hospital discharge with good neurological outcomes. Results: The ICER for EtCO2 monitoring during CPR, resulting in an absolute increase of one more case with ROSC, hospital discharge, and hospital discharge with good neurological outcome, was calculated at Int$ 515.78 (361.57-1201.12), Int$ 165.74 (119.29-248.4), and Int$ 240.55, respectively. Conclusion: In managing in-hospital CA in the hospital ward, incorporating EtCO2 monitoring is likely a cost-effective measure within the context of a middle-income country hospital with an RRT.

Aim: The aim of this study was to draw a stomatological profile of elderly patients treated at the Stomatology Service of a referral hospital in the city of Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais Brazil.Methods: Information was collected on the diagnostic hypotheses and definitive diagnoses of the elderly (aged 60 to 98 years) treated at the service, from September 2014 to December 2017. Results: Medical records of 1388 patients were evaluated, and 281 different diagnostic hypotheses were found. For males, there was a higher prevalence in both diagnostic and definitive diagnoses for benign and malignant epithelial neoplasms; In females, there was a higher prevalence, also in the hypotheses and diagnostic definitions, of inflammatory fibrous hyperplasia, related to the use of removable prostheses. Conclusion: Thus, this study evidenced the importance of knowledge about the main alterations that affect the oral cavity of elderly patients, which allows better attention to this population, besides being a pioneering stomatological study in hospital units.

Motivated by the recent report of room-temperature superconductivity at near-ambient pressure in N-doped lutetium hydride, we performed a comprehensive, detailed study of the phase diagram of the Lu-N-H system, looking for superconducting phases. We combined ab initio crystal structure prediction with ephemeral data-derived interatomic potentials to sample over 200,000 different structures. Out of the more than 150 structures predicted to be metastable within ~50 meV from the convex hull we identify 52 viable candidates for conventional superconductivity, for which we computed their superconducting properties from Density Functional Perturbation Theory. Although for some of these structures we do predict a finite superconducting Tc, none is even remotely compatible with room-temperature superconductivity as reported by Dasenbrock et al. Our work joins the broader community effort that has followed the report of near-ambient superconductivity, confirming beyond reasonable doubt that no conventional mechanism can explain the reported Tc in Lu-N-H.

BACKGROUND: In Brazil, cancer patients and caregivers of cancer patients seek judicial intervention for free access to medications from the public health system. Indeed, the COVID-19 pandemic potentially affected the health-related quality of life of cancer patients and caregivers of cancer patients. This study aimed to describe the sociodemographic profile and assess the health-related quality of life of patients and caregivers in the state of Goias, Brazil, in 2020. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted using the Medical Outcomes Study 36-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) and a sociodemographic questionnaire. RESULTS: A total of 88 (67,7%) patients and 42 (32,3%) caregivers participated in the study, mostly women (55,5%); aged from 18 to 60 (66%) years old; with up to nine years of education (73,1%) and monthly family income lower than the minimum wage (69,2%); married or in a stable union (92,3%); living with multiple people in the same household (73,8%). The quality of life domains with the best scores were mental health for patients and pain for caregivers. The most affected quality of life domain was physical limitation for patients and caregivers. Factors associated with better quality of life were female gender and age between 18 and 60 years in patients, more than 9 years of education, living with multiple people in the same house, and having a monthly family income higher than US$200 for caregivers. CONCLUSION: The study found evidence of physical and emotional vulnerability during the pandemic, highlighting the need to strengthen public policies of assistance support to this population.

We present structural, electrical, and thermoelectric potential measurements on high-quality single crystals of ZrTe1.8 grown from isothermal chemical vapor transport. These measurements show that the Te-deficient ZrTe1.8, which forms the same structure as the nonsuperconducting ZrTe2, is superconducting below 3.2 K. The temperature dependence of the upper critical field (H c2) deviates from the behavior expected in conventional single-band superconductors, being best described by an electron-phonon two-gap superconducting model with strong intraband coupling. For the ZrTe1.8 single crystals, the Seebeck potential measurements suggest that the charge carriers are predominantly negative, in agreement with the ab initio calculations. Through first-principles calculations within DFT, we show that the slight reduction of Te occupancy in ZrTe2 unexpectedly gives origin to density of states peaks at the Fermi level due to the formation of localized Zr-d bands, possibly promoting electronic instabilities at the Fermi level and an increase at the critical temperature according to the standard BCS theory. These findings highlight that the Te deficiency promotes the electronic conditions for the stability of the superconducting ground state, suggesting that defects can fine-tune the electronic structure to support superconductivity.

BACKGROUND: Due to the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic, recently, Radiotherapy (RT) protocols requiring fewer sessions (hypofractionated) have been used to shorten RT treatment and minimize patient exposure to medical centers, and decrease the risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection. METHODS: This longitudinal, prospective, observational study aimed to compare the quality of life (QoL) and the incidence of oral mucositis and candidiasis in 66 patients with head and neck cancer (HNC) who undergo a hypofractionated RT protocol (GHipo), total of 55 Gy for 4 weeks, or a conventional RT protocol (GConv), total of 66 - 70 Gy for 6 - 7 weeks. PURPOSE: To assess the incidence and severity of oral mucositis, the incidence of candidiasis, and QoL were evaluated using the World Health Organization scale, clinical evaluation, and the QLC-30 and H&N-35 questionnaires, respectively, at the beginning and the end of RT. RESULTS: The incidence of candidiasis did not show differences between the two groups. However, at the end of RT, mucositis had a higher incidence (p < 0.01) and severity (p < 0.05) in GHipo. QoL was not markedly different between the two groups. Although mucositis worsened in patients treated with hypofractionated RT, QoL did not worsen for patients on this regimen. CONCLUSIONS: Our results open perspectives for the potential use of RT protocols for HNC with fewer sessions in conditions that require faster, cheaper, and more practical treatments.

Avaliar os desfechos adversos perinatais relacionados à primiparidade. Trata-se de um estudo de corte transversal, realizado na Maternidade Darcy Vargas em JoinvilleSC, no período de agosto a dezembro de 2020. Dividiu-se as pacientes em 2 grupos, primíparas e multíparas. Através da análise do Prontuário Único do Paciente (PUP), os desfechos perinatais adversos foram avaliados com cálculo de razão de chance ajustado, utilizando intervalo de confiança de 95%. Os fatores de confusão adotados foram: idade, tabagismo, alcoolismo e outras drogas. As puérperas foram divididas em primíparas (n=522/31,2%) e multíparas (n=1148/68,7%). Após o cálculo de razão de chance ajustado, primíparas tiveram aumento da chance de episiotomia (RC=7,069 IC95% 4,275-11,690), prematuridade (RC=1,784 IC95% 1,011-3,148) e redução da chance de recém-nascidos Grandes para a Idade Gestacional (GIG) (RC=0,555 IC95% 0,388-0,793), não interferiu nos demais desfechos. Pacientes primíparas apresentaram maior chance de episiotomia, prematuridade e menor chance de recém-nascidos GIG.
To investigate the effects of perinatal primiparity. This was a cross-sectional cohort study, carried out at the Darcy Vargas Maternity Hospital in Joinville, state of Santa Catarina, from August to December 2020. Patients were assigned to 2 groups, primiparous and multiparous. With the analysis of electronic medical records, perinatal adverse outcomes were evaluated using the adjusted odds ratio, using a 95% confidence interval. Confounding factors adopted were: age, smoking, alcoholism, and other drugs. Postpartum women were divided into primiparous (n=522/31.2%) and multiparous (n=1,148/68.7%) women. After calculating the adjusted odds ratio, primiparous women had an increased chance of having an episiotomy (OR= 7,069 CI95% 4,275-11,690), prematurity (OR=1,784 CI95% 1,011-3,148) and reduced chance of Large for Gestational Age (LAG) newborns (OR=0,555 CI95% 0,388-0,793). Primiparous patients had a higher chance of having an episiotomy, prematurity, and a lower chance of LAG newborns.

Sphenophorus levis Vaurie, 1978 (Coleoptera: Curculionidae). is a difficult to control pest in sugarcane that causes great damage to the subterranean part of the plant. Low insect control is the result of the pesticide application technology adopted but also a consequence of the lack of studies regarding the pest's behavior. This research aimed to examine the attractiveness and repellency of one labelled insecticide dose to S. levis adults and to evaluate the activity and location behavior of S. levis adults under hourly observations over 24 h. Repellency and attractiveness studies were conducted in free-choice tests with treated soil with an insecticide product composed of lambda-cyhalothrin + thiamethoxam active ingredients and untreated soil. Insect activity and location behavior studies were assessed by conducting hourly observations of S. levis adults in containers with soil and sugarcane plant. The results indicate that S. levis adults are not repelled nor attracted to soil treated with the labelled dose of lambda-cyhalothrin + thiamethoxam in sugarcane. Additionally, insects presented nocturnal behavior for most activities (walking, digging and mating) starting at 6:00 p.m. until 2:00 a.m. An average of 21% of insects were out of the soil at night while the majority, 79%, remained inside the soil. During the day, most insects, 95%, remained hidden in the soil. Exposed insects were primarily located on the soil surface. According to these results, nocturnal insecticide applications may improve S. levis adult control due to greater insect activity and exposure at night.

(1) Background: The objective of this study was to evaluate the morphometry of peri-implant bone tissue in orchiectomized rats, treated with vitamin D isolated or associated with teriparatide. (2) Methods: 24 rats were divided into 4 groups: ORQ-orchiectomy, without drug treatment, ORQ+D-orchiectomy, treated with vitamin D, ORQTERI-orchiectomy, treated with teriparatide and ORQTERI+D-orchiectomy, treated with teriparatide + vitamin D. Each animal received an implant in the tibial metaphysis. Euthanasia occurred 60 days after implant surgery. Computed microtomography (micro-CT) was performed to evaluate the parameters of volume and percentage of bone volume (BV, BV/TV), trabecular thickness (Tb.Th), number and separation of trabeculae (Tb.N, Tb.Sp) and percentage of total porosity (Po-tot). Data were subjected to 1-way ANOVA and Tukey post-test, with a significance level of 5%. (3) Results: For the parameters BV, BV/TV, Tb.Th, the ORQTERI+D group showed the highest values in relation to the other groups and for Po-tot, the lowest values were for ORQTERI+D. For Tb.Sp and Tb.N, there was no statistically significant difference when comparing intragroup results (p > 0.05). (4) Conclusions: It was possible to conclude that treatment with vitamin D associated with teriparatide increases bone volume and improves bone quality.

Organochloride (OC) and polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) concentrations were determined in the muscle tissue of fifty sardine samples (Sardinella brasiliensis) sampled off the south-east Brazilian shelf. The aim herein was to investigate OCs and PCBs composition profile, bioaccumulation potential and human risks. The concentrations of 18 organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) were below the method limit of quantification in most samples (ca. 94%), with few detected, namely δ-HCH, γ-HCH, Endosulfan I and II, Endosulfan Sulphate, DDE, Dieldrin, Endrin, Endrin Aldeide, Endrin Cetone and Metoxyclor.
