RESUMEN

Ultrafiltration technology (UF) is efficient in surface water treatment, but its development and widespread application are limited by membrane fouling. Herein, an efficient and stable polymerized ferric titanium coagulant (PFTC) was synthesized and used as a UF pretreatment agent in actual lake water treatment. The control mechanism of PFTC on membrane fouling was investigated from the perspective of organic removal efficiency and in-situ membrane surface regulation. PFTC demonstrated a remarkable affinity for soluble metabolic intermediates and hydrophilic proteins through complexation and hydrogen bonding force, achieving removal efficiencies of 66.4 % for UV254 and 81.3 % for DOC, respectively. The hydrophilic pollutants with high molecular weight and non-saturated structure could be preferentially removed by PFTC due to its diverse hydrolysates including positively charged Fe-based hydrolysates, amorphous Ti-based hydrolysates, and highly polymerized Fe-Ti copolymers. The flocs generated by PFTC exhibited strong hydrophilicity, allowing for the formation of a loose porous cake layer on the ultrafiltration membrane, which acted as a hydrophilic layer to enhance the anti-fouling performance of ultrafiltration membrane. With its dual function of contaminant removal and in-situ membrane surface regulation, PFTC alleviated 98.9 % of membrane fouling. This study provides new insights into membrane fouling control by coagulation pretreatment and efficient treatment of surface water.

Chitinases, which catalyze the hydrolysis of chitin, the primary components of fungal cell walls, play key roles in defense responses, symbiotic associations, plant growth, and stress tolerance. In this study, 23 chitinase genes were identified in watermelon (Citrullus lanatus [Thunb.]) and classified into five classes through homology search and phylogenetic analysis. The genes with similar exon-intron structures and conserved domains were clustered into the same class. The putative cis-elements involved in the responses to phytohormone, stress, and plant development were identified in their promoter regions. A tissue-specific expression analysis showed that the ClChi genes were primarily expressed in the roots (52.17%), leaves (26.09%), and flowers (34.78%). Moreover, qRT-PCR results indicate that ClChis play multifaceted roles in the interaction between plant/environment. More ClChi members were induced by Race 2 of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. niveum, and eight genes were expressed at higher levels on the seventh day after inoculation with Races 1 and 2, suggesting that these genes play a key role in the resistance of watermelon to Fusarium wilt. Collectively, these results improve knowledge of the chitinase gene family in watermelon species and help to elucidate the roles played by chitinases in the responses of watermelon to various stresses.

Prolonged exposure to stress has a wide effect on the brain and cognition. Error processing, as one of the crucial components of executive function, plays an important role in cognitive and behavior control. However, to date, there is little research addressing the relationship between chronic perceived stress and error processing. The present study aims to explore the relationship between chronic perceived stress by the Cohen Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) and different stages of error processing by the method of Event-Related Potential (ERP). The error processing was tested in a classical auditory Go/NoGo paradigm, and ERP components including early Error-related Negativity (ERN) and late Error Positivity (Pe) were computed as the indices of error processing. The results showed that the PSS score was positively correlated with the Pe amplitude but not with the ERN amplitude. The correlation between PSS and the Pe amplitude holds true even after controlling the trait anxiety and depression symptoms. These results suggest that the higher the chronic stress level, the more sensitive the individuals are to their own errors as well as the more emotional/motivated attention the individuals distributed to their own errors.

Anxiety about math can lead to long-term negative consequences related to academic achievement and professional success. However, it remains unclear how elevated math-anxiety modulates brain activity while solving arithmetic problems. In the current study, we recorded electrophysiological responses throughout arithmetic problem solving, both at the period of anticipating an upcoming arithmetic problem and solving an arithmetic problem. Results showed that, after controlling for mathematical performance, people with higher math anxiety tended to show stronger beta band oscillation and P300 amplitude while expecting the arithmetic problems, as well as stronger gamma band activity while solving the arithmetic problems. These results suggest that individuals highly anxious about math might use more attentional resources during the course of anticipating the upcoming arithmetic problems, and showed greater attentional bias toward arithmetic problems during solving arithmetic problems.
