RESUMEN

A study was made of muscle cAMP content in rabbits with dexamethasone-induced myopathy. The experiments were performed in 15 male rabbits weighing 2.5--3.5 kg. Steroidal myopathy was produced by daily administration of 0.8 dexamethasone/kg body weight. Muscle biopsy was taken on experimental days 1, 3, 7 and 14. The content of cAMP was determined by radioimmunoassay. The clinical signs of myopathy occurred by day 7. The animals were immobilized day 14. The content of cAMP increased after the first administration of dexamethasone and remained unchanged till the end of the experiment. The increased cAMP content may be accounted for by dexamethasone effect on the enzymatic system that monitors the processes of cAMP activation and inhibition.

RESUMEN

The level of intermediates of glycolysis (hexose monophosphates, fructose-1,6-diphosphate, pyruvate) and the rate of lactic acid synthesis (under the aerobic conditions without substrates and in the presence of glucose, glucose-6-phosphate and fructose-1,6-diphosphate) were measured in the eye tissues (retina, iris, ciliary bodies, uvea) of rabbits of different age. The rate of lactic acid synthesis under the aerobic conditions in the retina and uveal tract increases of the latter the rate of lactic acid synthesis was the highest. The greatest increase in the lactic acid content was observed during the first 15 days of postnatal development.

RESUMEN

The activity of the enzymes of glycolysis (phosphofructokinase, aldolase, pyruvate kinase, lactate dehydrogenase) and hexose monophosphate shunt (glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase) was determined in the eye tissues of the rabbit at different stages of ontogenesis. The activity of these enzymes in the retina was shown to be higher than in other eye tissues. In the uveal tract (iris, ciliary bodies, uvea) the activity of glycolytic enzymes changes with the age. The greatest changes in the activity of enzymes were found during the period of the opening of eyelids. The activity of the enzymes of hexose monophosphate shunt in the eye tissues increases with the age. The relative activity of dehydrogenases of the hexose monophosphate shunt after the establishment of visual function is, however, not high and does not exceed that of phosphofructokinase and pyruvate kinase in the eye tissues of the rabbit.

RESUMEN

The ATP content in the rabbit eye tissues increases from birth till the time of sight appearance (12-15th day after birth). The ADP and AMP content did not increase during the period of sight appearance. After this period, the ATP content decreased down to the level of newborn tissues. The ADP and AMP content increased in the eye tissues of 2 months old and adult rabbits.

RESUMEN

The content of glycogen and glucose in tissues of the rabbit eye was shown to suffer marked changes during postnatal ontogenesis. The most pronounced changes occur during the first month of life (especially by the moment of appearance of sight). The activity of phosphorylase increased from birth till 6 months in all the eye tissues under study. The activity of glycogen synthetase decreased with the age, especially in the retina. The activity of hexose kinase increased in the retina almost 4 times and changed insignificantly in all other tissues during the period under study.
