Introdução: A parestesia é uma neuropatia que afeta a função sensorial. O Laser de Baixa Potência (LBP), por sua vez, apresenta propriedades analgésicas, bioestimuladoras e reparadoras. Objetivo: Realizar um levantamento na literatura científica sobre os aspectos gerais e benefícios do LBP no manejo terapêutico da parestesia, além de identificar a classificação e métodos de obtenção do diagnóstico desta condição. Materiais e Métodos: Tratou-se de uma revisão narrativa da literatura através da busca nas plataformas PubMed, SciELO, LILACS e Google Schoolar. Após o cruzamento dos descritores com os operadores booleanos e aplicação dos critérios de inclusão/exclusão, 26 estudos foram incluídos. Resultados: A parestesia pode ser classificada em neuropraxia, axonotmese e neurotmese, subdivididas em Grau I ao V. Seu diagnóstico pode ser executado através de testes subjetivos e objetivos. O LBP compreende em um dispositivo tecnológico com efeitos analgésico, anti-inflamatório e fotobiomodulador, que estimula o reparo neural. Os estudos mostram que a dosimetria nos comprimentos de onda vermelho e infravermelho, aplicação intra e extra oral, e com mais de uma sessão semanal exerce efeito modulatório positivo do reparo neural, com retorno progressivo da atividade sensitiva. Além disso, os estudos trazem uma ampla variação no número de pontos de aplicação, bem como no tempo de irradiação e quantidade de sessões, em virtude da extensão e tempo de diagnóstico da parestesia. Considerações finais: Apesar da alta complexidade da parestesia, o LBP exerce efeitos benéficos através do retorno da sensibilidade parcial ou total, além de ser um dispositivo bem tolerado pelo organismo e minimamente invasivo.


Introduction: Paresthesia is a neuropathy that affects sensory function. The Low-Level Laser (LLL), in turn, has analgesic, biostimulating and reparative properties. Purpose: Carry out a survey at the scientific literature on the general aspects and benefits of LLL in the therapeutic management of paresthesia in addition to identifying the classification and methods for obtaining a diagnosis of this condition. Materials and Methods: It was a narrative literature review through search in platforms PubMed, SciELO, LILACS and Google Schoolar. After crossing the descriptors with boolean operators and applying the inclusion/exclusion criteria, 26 articles were included in this study. Results: Paresthesia can be classified into neuropraxia, axonotmesis and neurotmesis, subdivided into Grades I to V. Its diagnostic can be carried out through subjective and objective tests. The LLL consists in a technological device with analgesic, anti-inflammatory and photobiomodulatory effects, which stimulates neural repair. Studies show that LLL in dosimetry at red and infrared wavelengths with intra and extra oral application and with more than one-week use exerts a positive modulatory effect on neural repair, with a progressive return of sensory activity. Furthermore, the studies show a wide variation in the number of application points, as well as the irradiation time and number of sessions, due to the extent and time of diagnosis of paresthesia. Final Considerations: Despite the high complexity of paresthesia, the LLL has beneficial effects through the return of partial or total sensitivity in addition being a device well tolerated by the body and minimally invasive.

Objetivo: verificar a influência da pandemia de Covid-19 no risco de desenvolvimento de transtornos alimentares em mulheres. Metodologia: pesquisa quantitativa, com mulheres com acesso ao computador, a celular e à internet. A coleta de dados foi realizada a partir de um questionário on-line contendo 60 perguntas, com respostas fechadas, que visavam conhecer a sua relação com a alimentação. Foram verificados o consumo alimentar e o risco de desenvolvimento de anorexia nervosa (Eating Attitudes Test - EAT-26) e bulimia nervosa (Bulimic Investigatory Test, Edinburgh- BITE). Resultados: participaram da pesquisa 92 mulheres, sendo que 81,50% (n=75) referiram que ficaram em casa durante a pandemia. Sobre a ingestão de alimentos, 45,70% (n=42) relataram que consumiram diariamente frutas e hortaliças, 55,40% (n=51) ingeriram de 1 a 2 vezes/semana bolachas, salgadinhos, doces e guloseimas e 62,00% (n=57) consumiam embutidos pelo menos 1 vez/semana. Ainda, 18,50% (n=17) apresentaram risco para o desenvolvimento de anorexia nervosa e 83,60% (n=73) risco de bulimia nervosa. Entretanto, analisando se esse risco estava associado à pandemia, verificou-se que não houve diferença significativa entre o grupo que permaneceu em casa e o grupo que saiu para trabalhar (p > 0,05). Conclusão: portanto, grande parte das voluntárias apresentaram um risco de desenvolver algum transtorno alimentar, entretanto, não houve uma relação entre o possível risco de desenvolver transtornos alimentares influenciado pela pandemia.


Objective: to verify the influence of the Covid-19 pandemic on the risk of developing eating disorders in women. Methodology: quantitative research, with women with access to a computer, cell phone and internet. Data collection was carried out using an online questionnaire containing 60 questions, with closed answers, which aimed to understand their relationship with food. Food consumption Abstract and the risk of developing nervous anorexia (Eating Attitudes Test - EAT-26) and nervous bulimia (Bulimic Investigatory Test, Edinburgh - BITE) were verified. Results: 92 women participated in the research, with 81.50% (n=75) reporting that they stayed at home during the pandemic. Regarding food intake, 45.70% (n=42) reported that they consumed fruits and vegetables daily, 55.40% (n=51) ate cookies, snacks, sweets and sweets 1 to 2 times/week and 62, 00% (n=57) consumed sausages at least once/week. Furthermore, 18.50% (n=17) were at risk for developing nervous anorexia and 83.60% (n=73) were at risk for nervous bulimia. However, analyzing whether this risk was associated with the pandemic, it was found that there was no significant difference between the group that remained at home and the group that went out to work (p > 0.05). Conclusion: therefore, most of the volunteers presented a risk of developing an eating disorder, however, there was no relationship between the possible risk of developing eating disorders influenced by the pandemic.

INTRODUCTION: The human respiratory syncytial virus (hRSV) is one of childhood diseases' most common respiratory pathogens and is associated with lower respiratory tract infections. The peak in disease that this virus can elicit during outbreaks is often a significant burden for healthcare systems worldwide. Despite theapproval of treatments against hRSV, this pathogen remains one the most common causative agent of infant mortality around the world. AREAS COVERED: This review focuses on the key prognostic and immunomodulatory biomarkers associated with hRSV infection, as well as prophylactic monoclonal antibodies and vaccines. The goal is to catalyze a paradigm shift within the scientific community toward the discovery of novel targets to predict the clinical outcome of infected patients, as well as the development of novel antiviral agents targeting hRSV. The most pertinent research on this topic was systematically searched and analyzed using PubMed ISI Thomson Scientific databases. EXPERT OPINION: Despite advances in approved therapies against hRSV, it is crucial to continue researching to develop new therapies and to find specific biomarkers to predict the severity of infection. Along these lines, the use of multi-omics data, artificial intelligence and natural-derived compounds with antiviral activity could be evaluated to fight hRSV and develop methods for rapid diagnosis of severity.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the adherence to the sepsis protocol by obstetric nurses in the obstetric triage of a high-risk maternity reference center. METHODS: This was a quantitative, documental, and retrospective study involving 105 pregnant women treated in obstetric triage under sepsis criteria. Data were collected through electronic medical records using structured forms and were organized into tables employing descriptive statistics. This research adhered to ethical principles concerning human studies. RESULTS: Of the checklists for initiating the SEPSIS protocol by obstetric nurses, 105 were identified. Regarding the protocol steps performed, lactate was collected in 97.1% of cases and blood cultures in 98.1%, antibiotic therapy was administered in 94.3%, and hydration was carried out in 51.4% of the cases. CONCLUSION: The initiation of the sepsis protocol for all women meeting the criteria was confirmed. However, the steps were not fully implemented as recommended by the institutional protocol, and the recommended broad-spectrum antibiotic was not administered.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare systems are currently ill-equipped to diagnose arboviruses rapidly and efficiently or to differentiate between various viruses. METHODS: Utilizing molecular techniques, this study examined arbovirus infections in 459 patients from a public health unit in Goiânia-Goiás, Brazil, a region where arbovirus infection poses a significant public health challenge. RESULTS: Nearly 60% of the analyzed samples tested positive for at least one arbovirus, and over 10% of the patients were co-infected with more than one virus. CONCLUSIONS: Fast and accurate diagnostic tools are essential for informing public health policy and enhancing epidemiological surveillance.

Maritime traffic is essential for global trade but faces significant challenges, including navigation safety, environmental protection, and the prevention of illicit activities. This work presents a framework for detecting illegal activities carried out by vessels, combining navigation behavior detection models with rules based on expert knowledge. Using synthetic and real datasets based on the Automatic Identification System (AIS), we structured our framework into five levels based on the Joint Directors of Laboratories (JDL) model, efficiently integrating data from multiple sources. Activities are classified into four categories: illegal fishing, suspicious activity, anomalous activity, and normal activity. To address the issue of a lack of labels and integrate data-driven detection with expert knowledge, we employed a stack ensemble model along with active learning. The results showed that the framework was highly effective, achieving 99% accuracy in detecting illegal fishing and 92% in detecting suspicious activities. Furthermore, it drastically reduced the need for manual checks by specialists, transforming experts' tacit knowledge into explicit knowledge through the models and allowing continuous updates of maritime domain rules. This work significantly contributes to maritime surveillance, offering a scalable and efficient solution for detecting illegal activities in the maritime domain.

This study explored the migration of follicular fluid (FF)-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) of the uterine environment to the bloodstream and their interaction with neutrophils in vivo and in vitro. For the in vivo experiment, six Nellore heifers (Bos indicus) received an intrauterine infusion seven days after ovulation with 1X PBS only (sham group; n=1), 1X PBS stained with lipophilic dye PKH26 (control group; n=2), or FF-derived EVs stained with PKH26 (treated group; n=3). Plasma was collected at 0, 10, 30, 60-, 180-, 360-, 720-, and 1440-min post-infusion to obtained EVs for analysis by nano flow cytometry. Labeled EVs were present in the bloodstream at 30- and 60-min post-infusion in the treatment group. Additionally, plasma derived-EVs from all groups were positive for Calcein-AM, Alix, Syntenin, and Calnexin, which confirm the presence of EVs. The second experiment utilized the plasma-derived EVs from the heifers from 30 and 60 min timepoints to evaluate if neutrophils can uptake EVs in vitro. As results, it was possible to observe the presence of labeled EVs in neutrophils treated with plasma derived-EVs from the treatment group. In summary, our results suggest that labeled EVs can migrate from the uterine environment rapidly and interact with circulating immune cells in bovine.

The Brazilian tick fauna currently comprises 77 valid species categorized into two families: Ixodidae (53 species) and Argasidae (24 species). In the state of Alagoas, only six Ixodid ticks have been reported to date, with no previous reports of ticks in the Argasidae family. Here, we assessed 33 White-eared Opossum (Didelphis albiventris Lund, 1840) rescued in the metropolitan region of Maceió and referred to the Wild Animal Screening Center (Cetas) in the city. Upon arrival, the animals were examined for ectoparasites within 24 hours. In total, 10/33 (30%) opossums were found to be infested by 26 larvae of the argasid tick Ornithodoros mimon Kohls, Clifford & Jones, 1969. Morphological identification of ticks was corroborated by generating partial sequences of the mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene from three tick specimens. This study marks the first report of an argasid tick in the state of Alagoas. Future studies should investigate whether populations of both O. mimon ticks and their host, D. albiventris, in the state of Alagoas carry potential zoonotic agents capable of causing tick-borne diseases.

This study aimed to measure access to medicines for the treatment of systemic arterial hypertension and type 2 diabetes mellitus in Brazil according to the mode of acquisition, as well as to analyze the factors associated with this access, based on data from the 2019 Brazilian National Survey of Health (PNS, acronym in Portuguese). Socioeconomic data and data related to the use of medicines by people aged 15 and over were analyzed in relation to access via the Brazilian Popular Pharmacy Program (PFPB, acronym in Portuguese) and via public services. The majority of Brazilians who took part in the PNS reported using medication to control hypertension in the previous 15 days (91.5%) and using oral medication for diabetes (95.2%) and/or insulin (70%). Most participants obtained oral medication for hypertension and type 2 diabetes mellitus via PFPB (45.2% and 53.6%, respectively), and the factors that most negatively influenced this access were older age, lower income, lower schooling, very poor self-rated health and not having private health insurance. Access to insulin, on the other hand, was most often via the public health service (69.7%), and the factors that most negatively influenced this access were black/mixed-race skin color, lower income, very poor self-rated health and not having private health insurance. Generally, the importance of the PFPB as a policy to increase access to essential medicines in Brazil was highlighted, considering the free supply of antihypertensive and antidiabetic drugs.


Este estudo objetivou mensurar o acesso aos medicamentos para o tratamento da hipertensão arterial sistêmica e diabetes mellitus tipo 2 no Brasil segundo a via de obtenção, bem como analisar os fatores associados a esse acesso, de acordo com os dados da Pesquisa Nacional de Saúde (PNS) de 2019. Foram analisados dados socioeconômicos e relacionados ao uso de medicamentos de pessoas de 15 anos ou mais, em relação ao acesso via Programa Farmácia Popular do Brasil (PFPB) e via serviço público. A maior parte dos brasileiros que participaram da PNS referiu fazer uso do medicamento para controle da hipertensão, nos últimos 15 dias (91,5%), assim como a maior parte referiu fazer uso de medicamento oral para diabetes (95,2%) e/ou uso da insulina (70%).Os medicamentos orais para hipertensão arterial sistêmica e diabetes mellitus tipo 2 foram obtidos majoritariamente via PFPB, sendo respectivamente (45,2% e 53,6%), e os fatores que mais influenciaram negativamente esse acesso foram maior faixa etária, menor renda, menor escolaridade, não ter plano de saúde e referir uma autoavaliação de saúde muito ruim. O acesso à insulina, por sua vez, se deu com maior frequência via serviço público de saúde (69,7%), e os fatores que mais influenciaram negativamente esse acesso foram raça preta/parda, menor renda, não ter plano de saúde e referir uma autoavaliação de saúde muito ruim. De forma geral, foi evidenciada a importância do PFPB como política de ampliação de acesso a medicamentos essenciais no Brasil, considerando a gratuidade dos anti-hipertensivos e antidiabéticos.


Este estudio tuvo como objetivo medir el acceso a los medicamentos para el tratamiento de la hipertensión arterial sistémica y de la diabetes mellitus tipo 2 en Brasil según la vía de obtención, además de analizar los factores asociados a este acceso, según datos de la Encuesta Nacional de Salud (PNS) de 2019. Se analizaron datos socioeconómicos y relacionados con el uso de medicamentos de personas de 15 años o más, con relación al acceso por medio del Programa Farmacia Popular de Brasil (PFPB) y por medio del servicio público. La mayor parte de los brasileños que participaron en la PNS refirió utilizar medicamentos para controlar la hipertensión, en los últimos 15 días (91,5%), así como la mayoría refirió el uso de medicamentos orales para la diabetes (95,2%) o uso de insulina (70%). Los medicamentos orales para hipertensión arterial sistémica y diabetes mellitus tipo 2 se obtuvieron en su mayoría por medio del PFPB, respectivamente (45,2% y 53,6%), y los factores que influyeron de forma más negativa en este acceso fueron mayor rango de edad, menores ingresos, menor escolaridad, no tener seguro de salud y reportar una autoevaluación de salud muy mala. El acceso a la insulina, a su vez, se produjo con mayor frecuencia por medio del servicio público de salud (69,7%), y los factores que influyeron de forma más negativa en este acceso fueron la raza negra/morena, menores ingresos, no tener plan de salud y reportar una autoevaluación de salud muy mala. En general, se destacó la importancia de la PFPB como política de ampliación del acceso a medicamentos esenciales en Brasil, considerando la gratuidad de los antihipertensivos y antidiabéticos.

The use of reclaimed water from wastewater treatment plants for irrigation has a risk of introducing micropollutants such as microplastics (MPs) and antimicrobials (AMs) into the agroecosystem. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of single and combined treatment of 0.1 % polyamide (PA ∼15 µm), and varying sulfamethoxazole (SMX) levels 0, 10, 50, and 150 mg/L on rice seedlings (Oryza sativa L.) for 12 days. The study aimed to assess the impact of these contaminants on the morphological, physiological, and biochemical parameters of the rice plants. The findings revealed that rice seedlings were not sensitive to PA alone. However, SMX alone or in combination with PA, significantly inhibited shoot and root growth, total biomass, and affected photosynthetic pigments. Higher concentrations of SMX increased antioxidant enzyme activity, indicating oxidative stress. The roots had a higher SMX content than the shoots, and the concentration of minerals such as iron, copper, and magnesium were reduced in roots treated with SMX. RNA-seq analysis showed changes in the expression of genes related to stress, metabolism, and transport in response to the micropollutants. Overall, this study provides valuable insights on the combined impacts of MPs and AMs on food crops, the environment, and human health in future risk assessments and management strategies in using reclaimed water.

Introduction: Antimicrobial-resistant pathogens present an ongoing threat to human and animal health, with deaths linked to antimicrobial resistance (AMR) predicted to increase annually. While the misuse and overuse of antibiotics in humans undoubtedly contribute to this escalation, antibiotic use in the veterinary field, including companion animals, also plays a contributing role. Pet owners' desire to improve the quality of life of their pets is likely to support antibiotic use in this field. Consequently, there is a need for antibiotic alternatives to treat bacterial infections. This study set out to screen for antimicrobial peptides known as bacteriocins from bacterial isolates of aerobic/microaerophilic environments of canine sources and determine their potential as antibiotic alternatives against clinically relevant pathogens. Methods: Following a laboratory-based protocol, 22 bacterial isolates were subjected to whole-genome sequencing (WGS), and a total of 14 putative novel bacteriocins were identified from both class I and II bacteriocin classes. One particular bacteriocin, herein named caledonicin, was identified via in silico analysis from a Staphylococcus caledonicus strain and partially purified for further in vitro evaluation. Results: Caledonicin is a 64-amino acid (IAANLGVSSGTAYS MANALNNISNVATA LTIIGTFTGVGTIGSGIA ATILAILKKKGVAAAAAF) novel circular bacteriocin most closely related to enterocin_NKR-5-3B based on core peptide alignment (39.1%), with a molecular weight of 6077.1 Da. Caledonicin exhibits a broad-spectrum of activity against a range of pathogenic bacteria, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus pseudintermedius (MRSP), and Listeria monocytogenes; and the gut-related bacterium associated with Crohn's disease, Mediterraneibacter gnavus ATCC 29149 (previously Ruminococcus gnavus ATCC 29149). Discussion: This represents the first bacteriocin screening study involving bacteria from canine sources and confirms this is a rich environment for bacteriocin-producing strains. This study also identifies and characterises the first novel bacteriocin from the staphylococcal species, Staphylococcus caledonicus.

INTRODUCTION AND AIM: Ethnically diverse neighborhoods encounter pronounced inequalities, including housing segregation and limited access to safe outdoor spaces. Residents of these neighborhoods face challenges related to physical inactivity, including sedentary lifestyles and obesity in adults and children. One approach to tackling health inequalities is through family-based programs tailored specifically to these neighborhoods. This study aimed to investigate parents' experiences and perceptions of the family-based Open Activities, a cost-free and drop-in program offered in ethnically diverse and low socioeconomic neighborhoods in Sweden. METHODS: Researchers' engagement in 15 sessions of the Open Activities family-based program during the spring of 2022, and individual interviews with 12 participants were held. Data were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis. RESULTS: The analysis resulted in three main themes and seven sub-themes representing different aspects of the program's meaning to the participants as parents, their families, and communities. The main themes describe how parents feel valued by the program, which actively welcomes and accommodates families, regardless of cultural differences within these neighborhoods. The themes also show how cultural norms perceived as barriers to participation in physical activity can be overcome, especially by mothers who express a desire to break these norms and support girls' physical activity. Additionally, the themes highlight the importance of parents fostering safety in the area and creating a positive social network for their children to help them resist criminal gang-related influences. CONCLUSIONS: The program's activities allowed parents to connect with their children and other families in their community, and (re)discover physical activity by promoting a sense of community and safety. Implications for practice include developing culturally sensitive activities that are accessible to and take place in public spaces for ethnically diverse groups, including health coordinators that can facilitate communication between groups. To enhance the impact of this program, it is recommended that the public sector support the creation of cost-free and drop-in activities for families who are difficult to reach in order to increase their participation in physical activity, outreach, and safety initiatives.

Exercise training leads to physiological cardiac hypertrophy and the protective axis of the renin-angiotensin system composed of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2, angiotensin-(1-7), and Mas receptor seems involved in this process. However, the role of the basal activity of the Mas receptor in exercise-induced physiological cardiac hypertrophy is still unclear. We evaluated the effects of the Mas receptor blockade on the left ventricular structure and function of rats submitted to running training. Rats were assigned to 4 groups: sedentary (S), sedentary + A-779 (Mas receptor antagonist, 120 µg/kg/day, i.p.; SA), trained (60-minute treadmill running sessions, five days a week, 8 weeks; T), and trained + A-779 (TA). Systolic blood pressure was higher in sedentary and trained rats treated with A-779 at the end of the experimental period. The A-779 treatment prevented the left ventricular hypertrophy evoked by physical exercise and increased collagen deposition in sedentary and trained rats. Cardiomyocytes from the SA group presented increased length and thickness of the sarcomeres, elongated mitochondria, glycogen deposits, and enlarged cisterns of the sarcoplasmic reticulum. TA group presented a reduced sarcomere thickness and cytoplasm with a degenerative aspect. These findings show that the basal activity of the Mas receptor is essential for the proper turnover of the extracellular matrix in the myocardium and the maintenance of the sarcomeric structure of cardiomyocytes.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Microbial translocation contributes to cirrhosis progression and complications. This study aims to investigate whether molecules related to intestinal permeability or microbial translocation can serve as prognostic biomarkers in patients with decompensated cirrhosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We prospectively evaluated hospitalized patients with decompensated cirrhosis for liver function, complications during hospitalization, in-hospital mortality, composite outcomes of in-hospital mortality and complications, 12-month mortality, and survival rates. Blood samples were collected upon admission, and 1,3 beta-D-glucan, zonulin, calprotectin, and lipopolysaccharide-binding protein were measured using commercial kits. RESULTS: Ninety-one patients with decompensated cirrhosis were enrolled. The mean age was 58 ± 12 years; 57% were male. The three main cirrhosis etiologies were hepatitis C (35%), alcohol (25%), and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (17%). In terms of liver function, 52% were Child C, and 68% had model for end-stage liver disease ≥15. The in-hospital and one-year mortality rates were 31% and 57%, respectively. Child-Pugh, 1,3 beta-glucan, and model for end-stage liver disease were positively correlated; zonulin was associated with complications during hospitalization (acute kidney injury) and composite outcomes, and calprotectin was associated with all outcomes except 12-month mortality. CONCLUSIONS: Serum calprotectin and zonulin levels emerge as noninvasive prognostic biomarkers for potentially unfavorable outcomes in patients with decompensated cirrhosis.

BACKGROUND: Chagas cardiomyopathy (CCM) is increasingly prevalent in developed countries due to migration from endemic areas. Accurate risk stratification is crucial due to the variable clinical course of CCM. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the association between Rassi score progression and electrophysiology study (EPS) changes in CCM patients. METHODS: This prospective, observational cohort study involved CCM patients from two tertiary hospitals. Patients were classified as low, intermediate, or high risk based on the Rassi score. Data collected included demographics, clinical history, and diagnostic tests. EPS assessed AH, HH, and HV intervals, and inducibility of ventricular arrhythmias. Follow-ups were at 30 days and six-month intervals, with individualized discussions for cardiac implantable electric devices (CIED) based on EPS results. RESULTS: Of 67 screened CCM patients, 59 underwent EPS. The mean Rassi score was 8.7 ±â€¯4.5 points, with 33.8 % low, 38.9 % intermediate, and 27.1 % high risk. EPS abnormalities were found in 57.6 % of patients, mainly VT/VF (52.5 %). Most induced ventricular arrhythmias were monomorphic VT (80.7 %). A significant association was found between Rassi score risk classification and EPS changes (OR = 1.88 95 %CI: 1.15-3.06 p = 0.02). Higher Rassi scores correlated with VT presence on EPS (p = 0.0036). Syncope/pre-syncope had an OR 2.45 95 %CI:1.21-4.94; p = 0.012, independent of Rassi risk. Decreased ejection fraction was linked to EPS changes (p = 0.04). CONCLUSION: EPS changes among CCM was associated with progression of the Rassi score, indicating its utility as a stratification tool. Factors such as the presence of syncope/pre-syncope, decreased LVEF and wall motion abnormalities emerged as independent predictors within Rassi scores for changes in EPS.

For bioactivity studies, it is necessary to use products with a high degree of purity, which may influence the cytotoxic effects. Supercritical technology presents itself as an alternative to obtain these products. Therefore, the objective of this work was to obtain the bioactive compounds of oil and pulp of açaí fat-free supercritical technology and evaluate the cytotoxicity of products in MRC-5 and VERO cells in vitro. The açaí pulp was subjected to extraction with supercritical CO2 to obtain the oil and pulp without fat, under conditions of 323.15 K at 35 MPa, 333.15 K at 42 MPa, and 343.15 K at 49 MPa. The largest yields (51.74%), carotenoids (277.09 µg/g), DPPH (2.55 µmol TE/g), ABTS (2.60 µmol TE/g), and FRAP (15.25 µm of SF/g) of oil and ABTS (644.23 µmol TE/g) of pulp without fat were found in the condition 343.15 K at 49 MPa. The highest levels of compounds phenolics (150.20 mg GAE/g), DPPH (414.99 µmol TE/g), and FRAP (746.2 µm SF/g) of the pulp without fat were found in the condition of 323.15 K to 35 MPa. The fat-free pulp presented high levels of anthocyanins without significant variation in cytotoxicity. The developed process was efficient in obtaining oil rich in carotenoids, and the supercritical technology elucidated an efficient way to obtain açaí fat-free pulp.

The growing consumer demand for natural and eco-friendly food products motivates the development and evaluation of new and natural inputs for the food industry. So, this work explores the potential of grape pomace (GP) from winemaking, a food production residue, to obtain an anthocyanin-rich, ready-to-use extract with antioxidant activity that can confer improved color-rich gummy candies. The anthocyanins' chemical nature and the predictive COSMO-SAC model was considered for screening the best natural eutectic mixture for anthocyanin extraction. The eutectic mixtures composed of choline chloride as a hydrogen bond acceptor and acetic and citric acids as hydrogen bond donors were selected as solvents. The extraction was performed using a high-shear disperser (Ultra-Turrax®) at 45 °C and was stirred at 5000 rpm for 10 min. The extracts presented high total anthocyanin content (TAC), up to 60 µg equivalent of cyaniding-3-glucoside/g of dry GP, and high antioxidant activity as determined by DPPH and FRAP assays. The phenolic profile was also determined by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and the results corroborated with the antioxidant activity of the extracts. The results also demonstrate that eutectic mixtures enhance the extraction efficiency of anthocyanins and improve their stability, making them suitable for incorporation into functional food products such as gummies, acting as natural colorants.

Aquatic organisms are challenged by changes in their external environment, such as temperature and salinity fluctuations. If these variables interacted with each other, the response of organisms to temperature changes would be modified by salinity and vice versa. We tested for potential interaction between temperature and salinity effects on freshwater, brackish, and marine organisms, including algae, macrophytes, heterotrophic protists, parasites, invertebrates, and fish. We performed a meta-analysis that compared the thermal tolerance (characterised by the temperature optimum, lower and upper temperature limits, and thermal breadth) at various salinities. The meta-analysis was based on 90 articles (algae: 15; heterotrophic protists: 1; invertebrates: 43; and fish: 31). Studies on macrophytes and parasites were lacking. We found that decreasing salinity significantly increased and decreased the lower and upper temperature limits, respectively, in all groups. Thus, a lowered salinity increased the thermal sensitivity of organisms. These findings mainly reflect the response of brackish and marine organisms to salinity changes, which dominated our database. The few studies on freshwater species showed that their lower thermal limits increased and the upper thermal limits decreased with increasing salinity, albeit statistically nonsignificant. Although non-significant, the response of thermal tolerance to salinity changes differed between various organism groups. It generally decreased in the order of: algae > invertebrates > fish. Overall, our findings indicate adverse effects of salinity changes on the temperature tolerance of aquatic organisms. For freshwater species, studies are comparatively scarce and further studies on their thermal performance at various salinity gradients are required to obtain more robust evidence for interactions between salinity and temperature tolerance. Considering test conditions such as acclimation temperature and potential infection with parasites in future studies may decrease the variability in the relationship between salinity and thermal tolerance.

The Harpy Eagle (Harpia harpyja) is an iconic species that inhabits forested landscapes in Neotropical regions, with decreasing population trends mainly due to habitat loss, and currently classified as vulnerable. Here, we report on a chromosome-scale genome assembly for a female individual combining long reads, optical mapping, and chromatin conformation capture reads. The final assembly spans 1.35 Gb, with N50scaffold equal to 58.1 Mb and BUSCO completeness of 99.7%. We built the first extensive transposable element (TE) library for the Accipitridae to date and identified 7,228 intact TEs. We found a burst of an unknown TE ~ 13-22 million years ago (MYA), coincident with the split of the Harpy Eagle from other Harpiinae eagles. We also report a burst of solo-LTRs and CR1 retrotransposons ~ 31-33 MYA, overlapping with the split of the ancestor to all Harpiinae from other Accipitridae subfamilies. Comparative genomics with other Accipitridae, the closely related Cathartidae and Galloanserae revealed major chromosome-level rearrangements at the basal Accipitriformes genome, in contrast to a conserved ancient genome architecture for the latter two groups. A historical demography reconstruction showed a rapid decline in effective population size over the last 20,000 years. This reference genome serves as a crucial resource for future conservation efforts towards the Harpy Eagle.
