The addition of nanoparticles has been presented as an alternative approach to counteract the degradation of polymeric solutions for enhanced oil recovery. In this context, a nanohybrid (NH34) of partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (MW â¼12 MDa) and nanosilica modified with 2% 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (nSiO2-APTES) was synthesized and evaluated. NH34 was characterized by using dynamic light scattering, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. Fluid-fluid tests assessed its viscosifying power, mechanical stability, filterability, and emulsion behavior. Rock-fluid tests were carried out to determine the nanohybrid's adsorption in porous media, the inaccessible pore volume (IPV), and the resistance (RF) and residual resistance factors (RRF). These tests were conducted under the conditions of a Colombian field. NH34 results were compared with four (4) commercial polymers (P34, P88, P51, and PA2). The viscosifying power of NH34 was observed to be similar to that of the four commercial polymers at a lower concentration, but it exhibits more resistance to mechanical and chemical degradation. The evaluation of the emulsion behavior showed that the nanohybrid neither changed the dehydration process nor altered the crude oil viscosity, favoring its extraction at the wellhead. However, the water clarification treatment must be adjusted because the oil and grease contents and turbidity increase with the residual concentration of NH34. Incremental oil recovery factors obtained by numerical simulation (compared to waterflooding) were P51 (5.5%) > P34 (4.9%) > P88 (4.8%) > NH34 (2.6%) > PA2 (0.9%). The polymers P51, P34, and P88 had a better recovery factor than NH34 and PA2 due to their lower values of residual adsorption and IPV. Few studies have been reported on polymer nanohybrids' emulsion and flow behavior. Therefore, further research is needed to enhance our understanding of the fundamental enhanced oil recovery mechanisms associated with polymer nanohybrids.

Nanoparticles (NPs) have been proposed as additives to improve the rheological properties of polymer solutions and reduce mechanical degradation. This study presents the results of the retention experiment and the numerical simulation of the displacement efficiency of a SiO2/hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (HPAM) nanohybrid (CSNH-AC). The CSNH-AC was obtained from SiO2 NPs (synthesized by the Stöber method) chemically modified with HPAM chains. Attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, field emission gun-scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and thermogravimetric analysis were used to characterize the nanohybrid. The injectivity and dynamic retention tests were performed at 56 °C in a sandstone core with a porosity of â¼26% and a permeability of 117 and 287 mD. A history matching of the dynamic retention test was performed to determine the maximum and residual adsorption, IPV, and residual resistance factor (RRF). A laboratory-scale model was used to evaluate the displacement efficiency of CSNH-AC and HPAM through numerical simulation. According to the results, the nanohybrid exhibits better rheological behavior than the HPAM solution at a lower concentration. The nanopolymer sol adsorption and IPV (29,7 µg/grock, 14,5) are greater than those of the HPAM solution (9,2 µg/grock, 10), which was attributed to the difference between the rock permeabilities used in the laboratory tests (HPAM: 287 mD and CSNH-AC: 117 mD). The RF of both samples gradually increases with the increase in shear rate, while the RRF slightly decreases and tends to balance. However, the nanopolymer sol exhibits greater RF and RRF values than that of the polymer solution due to the strong flow resistance of the nanohybrid (higher retention in the porous media). According to the field-scale simulation, the incremental oil production could be 295,505 and 174,465 barrels for the nanopolymer sol and the HPAM solution, respectively (compared to waterflooding). This will represent an incremental recovery factor of 11.3% for the nanopolymer sol and 6.7% for the HPAM solution.

Restoration of forests in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) has the potential to contribute to international carbon mitigation targets. However, high upfront costs and variable cashflows are obstacles for many landholders. Carbon payments have been promoted as a mechanism to incentivize restoration and economists have suggested cost-sharing by third parties to reduce financial burdens of restoration. Yet empirical evidence to support this theory, based on robust, dynamic field sampling is lacking. Here we use large, long-term datasets from Panama to evaluate the financial prospects of three forest restoration methods under different cost-sharing and carbon payment designs where income is generated through timber harvests. We show some, but not all options are economically viable. Further work combining growth and survival data from field trials with more sophisticated financial analyses is essential to understanding barriers and realizing the potential of forest restoration in LMICs to help meet global carbon mitigation commitments.

In this study, we report for the first time the successful infestation of rabbits with just-molted, unfed adults of Rhipicephalus microplus. Six New Zealand White rabbits were experimentally infested with 20 female and 20 male unfed adult ticks released into plastic chambers fixed on the shaved backs of each host. The attachment and feeding processes were successful. The biological characteristics of the ticks and the occurrence of adverse events in the tick-attachment area were studied. The average engorgement period was 10.7 days, and 33.3% of the engorged females completed the parasitic phase. The average weight of the recovered engorged females was 149.8 mg, with an average egg mass weight of 70.9 mg, a conversion efficiency index of 47.3%, and a hatching percentage of 88.31%. The adverse reactions found in the tick-attachment area were the usual inflammatory responses of the organism to infestation by these ectoparasites; however, it did not prevent the ticks from feeding and completing their life cycle. These data indicate that the infestation of rabbits with just-molted, unfed adult ticks could be a valuable, alternative animal model for rapid and economical evaluation of vaccine candidates and new molecules with acaricidal activity against Rhipicephalus microplus.

Neste estudo, relata-se, pela primeira vez, o sucesso da infestação de coelhos por carrapatos adultos recém-mudados e não alimentados. Seis coelhos brancos da Nova Zelândia foram infestados artificialmente com 20 carrapatos adultos fêmeas e 20 machos adultos não alimentados no interior de câmaras de plástico fixadas no dorso de cada hospedeiro. Os processos de fixação e alimentação dos carrapatos foram bem sucedidos. Foram estudadas as características biológicas dos carrapatos e a ocorrência de eventos adversos na área de fixação do ectoparasito. O período médio de ingurgitamento foi de 10,7 dias, e 33,3% das fêmeas ingurgitadas completaram a fase parasitária. O peso médio das fêmeas ingurgitadas recuperadas foi de 149,8 mg, com peso médio da massa de ovos de 70,9 mg, índice de produção de ovos de 47,3% e porcentagem de incubação de 88,31%. Uma resposta inflamatória usual do organismo à infestação por esses ectoparasitas foi a única reação adversa encontrada na área de fixação dos carrapatos, o que não impediu que eles se alimentassem e completassem seu ciclo de vida. Esses dados apontam que a infestação de coelhos com carrapatos adultos recém-mudados e não alimentados pode ser um modelo animal alternativo e útil para a avaliação rápida e econômica de candidatos a vacinas e novas moléculas com atividade acaricida contra Rhipicephalus microplus.(AU)

We introduce the FunAndes database, a compilation of functional trait data for the Andean flora spanning six countries. FunAndes contains data on 24 traits across 2,694 taxa, for a total of 105,466 entries. The database features plant-morphological attributes including growth form, and leaf, stem, and wood traits measured at the species or individual level, together with geographic metadata (i.e., coordinates and elevation). FunAndes follows the field names, trait descriptions and units of measurement of the TRY database. It is currently available in open access in the FIGSHARE data repository, and will be part of TRY's next release. Open access trait data from Andean plants will contribute to ecological research in the region, the most species rich terrestrial biodiversity hotspot.

Pollution from oil spills can seriously affect many ecosystem processes and human health. Many articles have evaluated the impact of oil spills on human health. However, most of these articles focus on occupational exposure. The effect on people living in the areas affected by oil pollution is rarely studied. Approximately 640 million people worldwide live in areas at risk of oil pollution. Thus, studying the impact of this pollution on human health should be a priority. Here, we evaluate the presence of anemia in relation to crude oil exposure in men living in areas at risk of oil contamination in the Ecuadorian Amazon (Orellana and Napo). We evaluated the hematological and biochemical parameters of 135 participants. We divided the participants into three groups according to exposure: low, medium, and high. Our results showed a significant association between exposure risk and hemoglobin and hematocrit concentration. Groups with medium- and high- contamination exposure had levels below normal values in hemoglobin and hematocrit in more than 30% and 26% of the population, respectively. In conclusion, we found that crude oil affected human health, and the prevalence of the anemia in men was dependent of the level of contamination.

Seasonally dry forests (SDFs) are one of the most challenging ecosystems for amphibians, fueling the diversity of this group of vertebrates. An updated inventory of native amphibians present in the Equatorial SDF is provided, which extends along the Pacific coast of Ecuador and northwestern Peru. The study is based on an extensive field sampling (two thirds of the total records) carried out throughout the Equatorial SDF, along with a compilation of the available information on distribution of amphibians in the region from published scientific papers, museum collections and on-line databases. The final dataset included 2,032 occurrence records for 30 amphibian species, belonging to eight anuran families. Additionally, data regarding conservation status, habitat use, spawn deposition site, reproductive mode, and body size, along with an identification key for all encountered species are provided. The results indicate a strong sampling bias with a deficit in the Peruvian part of the study area, and a need for urgent inventories targeted at under-sampled areas, using modern taxonomic methods. The study emphasizes the conservation priorities in the Equatorial SDF, based on the distribution, conservation status and life-history data. This information should be useful for the local authorities and institutions involved in the management and conservation of biodiversity in SDF.

Resumen Introducción: Los bosques tropicales estacionalmente secos están sujetos a procesos de degradación crónica que ponen en riesgo su diversidad. La ganadería intensiva dentro de los remanentes de bosque se plantea como una de las principales causas de estos procesos de degradación. Sin embargo, el ganado también podría estar cumpliendo el rol de dispersor de semillas para algunas especies. Objetivo: Evaluar el rol de las cabras en la dispersión de semillas de especies leñosas y las posibles consecuencias de su comportamiento alimenticio sobre la estructura de la vegetación. Métodos: Entre diciembre 2016 y junio 2017 se recolectaron fecas de corrales (N = 38) y parcelas de vegetación (N = 42) de tres localidades de bosque seco en el Suroccidente de Ecuador. Todas las semillas encontradas en las fecas (N = 13 326) se registraron e identificaron taxonómicamente. Para evaluar el efecto de la ingestión de semillas sobre la germinación, se estableció un experimento de siembra de semillas extraídas de fecas procedentes de corrales y semillas recolectadas directamente de la planta. Resultados: Las cabras dispersaron 10 especies leñosas, de las cuales al menos el 50 % son leguminosas. Las semillas de Acacia macracantha representaron más del 70 % de semillas presentes en fecas de cabra. El paso de semillas por el tracto digestivo de las cabras mejoró significativamente el porcentaje y velocidad de germinación en Albizia multiflora, Piscidia carthagenensis y Ziziphus thyrsiflora, mientras que en Choroleucon mangense y Prosopis juliflora no se obtuvo germinación. No encontramos una correlación entre la riqueza de árboles establecidos y el número de especies encontradas en las fecas (χ2 = -0.23, P = 0.53). La composición de especies de semillas dispersadas en las fecas no mostró una dependencia de la localidad, a pesar de que la composición de la vegetación establecida cambia entre localidades. La abundancia de semillas en las fecas no mostró relación con la abundancia de árboles en la vegetación establecida. Conclusiones: Las cabras pueden suplir en cierta medida el rol de otros ungulados localmente extintos, mejorando la germinación de especies de leguminosas con testa dura. Sin embargo, su comportamiento alimenticio y la alta dominancia en la dispersión de ciertas especies puede tener importantes efectos en la estructura de la comunidad.
Abstract Introduction: Seasonally dry tropical forests are subject to chronic degradation processes, which has reduced the populations of some important animal dispersers. Intensive livestock farming within the forest remnants is considered one of the main causes of these degradation processes. However, domestic ungulates could also be fulfilling the role of seed dispersal for some wild species. Objective: To evaluate the role of goats as seed dispersers of woody species and the possible consequences of their feeding behavior on the vegetation structure. Methods: Between December 2016 and June 2017, we collected goat feces from pens (N = 38) and vegetation plots (N = 42) from three locations of dry forest in the Southwestern Ecuador. All the seeds found in the feces (N = 13 326) were recorded and taxonomically identified. To evaluate the effect of gut passage on seed germination, we sowed the seeds found in the goat feces from the pens and seeds collected directly from parent plants. Results: Goats dispersed seeds from ten species, of which at least 50 % are legumes. Acacia macracantha seeds represented ca. 70 % of seeds present in goat feces. The passage of seeds through the digestive tract of goats significantly improved the percentage and speed of germination in Albizia multiflora, Piscidia carthagenensis and Ziziphus thyrsiflora, while in Choroleucon mangense and Prosopis juliflora no germination was registered. We did not find a correlation between the richness of established trees and the number of species found in the goat feces (χ2 = -0.23, P = 0.53). The composition of dispersed seed species in the feces did not show a dependency on the locality, although the composition of the established vegetation changes between localities. The frequency of seeds in the feces did not show a relationship with the tree abundance in the established vegetation. Conclusions: Goats can play, at least partially, the role of locally extinct wild ungulates, improving the germination of legume species with hard coat. However, this positive effect can be blurred by their feeding behavior and high preference for particular species, which can modify the dominance of some species, and result in changes in the composition and structure of the vegetation.

Given widespread habitat degradation and loss, reliable indicators are needed that provide a comprehensive assessment of community response to anthropogenic disturbance. The family Phyllostomidae (Order Chiroptera) has frequently been the focus of research evaluating bats' response to habitat disturbance in seasonally dry tropical forests (SDTFs). However, few studies compare this family to the larger bat assemblage to assess its efficacy as a bioindicator. We compared community and species-specific attributes of understory phyllostomid and all understory bat species: (1) along a gradient of habitat disturbance within a human-modified SDTF landscape; and (2) between forest and riparian habitats within each disturbance level. We captured 290 individuals belonging to 13 species and 4 families. Phyllostomid species exhibited greater sensitivity to disturbance than the understory bat community as a whole based on richness and beta diversity. Both groups were more sensitive to disturbance in forest than riparian habitat, but phyllostomid species were more likely to be lost from highly disturbed forest habitat. The two dominant species declined in abundance with disturbance but variation in body condition was species-specific. These results suggest that Phyllostomidae are more effective indicators of human disturbance in SDTF than the understory bat community as a whole and evaluation of bats' response to disturbance is best accomplished with a multifaceted approach.

E2CD154 is a novel subunit vaccine candidate against classical swine fever virus (CSFV). It contains the E2 envelope protein from CSFV fused to the porcine CD154 molecule formulated in the oil adjuvant MontanideTM ISA50 V2. Previous works evidenced the safety and immunogenicity of this candidate. Here, two other important parameters related to vaccine efficacy were assessed. First, the existence of high maternally derived antibody (MDA) titers in piglets born to sows vaccinated with E2CD154 was demonstrated. These MDA titers remained above 1:200 during the first seven weeks of life. To assess whether the titers interfere with active vaccination, 79 piglets from sows immunized with either E2CD154 or a modified live vaccine were vaccinated with E2CD154 following a 0-21-day biphasic schedule. Animals immunized at either 15, 21, or 33 days of age responded to vaccination by eliciting protective neutralizing antibody (NAb) titers higher than 1:600, with a geometric mean of 1:4335, one week after the booster. Those protective levels of NAb were sustained up to six months of age. No vaccination-related adverse effects were described. As a conclusion, E2CD154 is able to induce protective NAb in piglets with different MDA levels and at different days of age.

Many studies have tried to assess the role of both deterministic and stochastic processes in community assembly, yet a lack of consensus exists on which processes are more prevalent and at which spatial scales they operate. To shed light on this issue, we tested two nonmutually exclusive, scale-dependent hypotheses: (1) that competitive exclusion dominates at small spatial scales; and (2) that environmental filtering does so at larger ones. To accomplish this, we studied the functional patterns of tropical montane forest communities along two altitudinal gradients, in Ecuador and Peru, using floristic and functional data from 60 plots of 0.1 ha. We found no evidence of either functional overdispersion or clustering at small spatial scales, but we did find functional clustering at larger ones. The observed pattern of clustering, consistent with an environmental filtering process, was more evident when maximizing the environmental differences among any pair of plots. To strengthen the link between the observed community functional pattern and the underlying process of environmental filtering, we explored differences in the climatic preferences of the most abundant species found at lower and higher elevations and examined whether their abundances shifted along the elevation gradient. We found (1) that greater community functional differences (observed between lower and upper tropical montane forest assemblies) were mostly the result of strong climatic preferences, maintained across the Neotropics; and (2) that the abundances of such species shifted along the elevational gradient. Our findings support the conclusion that, at large spatial scales, environmental filtering is the overriding mechanism for community assembly, because the pattern of functional clustering was linked to species' similarities in their climatic preferences, which ultimately resulted in shifts in species abundances along the gradient. However, there was no evidence of competitive exclusion at more homogeneous, smaller spatial scales, where plant species effectively compete for resources.

Understanding the vulnerability of tree species to anthropogenic threats is important for the efficient planning of restoration and conservation efforts. We quantified and compared the effects of future climate change and four current threats (fire, habitat conversion, overgrazing and overexploitation) on the 50 most common tree species of the tropical dry forests of northwestern Peru and southern Ecuador. We used an ensemble modelling approach to predict species distribution ranges, employed freely accessible spatial datasets to map threat exposures, and developed a trait-based scoring approach to estimate species-specific sensitivities, using differentiated trait weights in accordance with their expected importance in determining species sensitivities to specific threats. Species-specific vulnerability maps were constructed from the product of the exposure maps and the sensitivity estimates. We found that all 50 species face considerable threats, with an average of 46% of species' distribution ranges displaying high or very high vulnerability to at least one of the five threats. Our results suggest that current levels of habitat conversion, overexploitation and overgrazing pose larger threats to most of the studied species than climate change. We present a spatially explicit planning strategy for species-specific restoration and conservation actions, proposing management interventions to focus on (a) in situ conservation of tree populations and seed collection for tree planting activities in areas with low vulnerability to climate change and current threats; (b) ex situ conservation or translocation of populations in areas with high climate change vulnerability; and (c) active planting or assisted regeneration in areas under high current threat vulnerability but low climate change vulnerability, provided that interventions are in place to lower threat pressure. We provide an online, user-friendly tool to visualize both the vulnerability maps and the maps indicating priority restoration and conservation actions.

After Rhipicephalus microplus, the most important tick species affecting livestock industry in Cuba belong to the Amblyomma genus. There are few reports of effective vaccine antigens for these species. Recently, vaccination and challenge trials using a peptide from the P0 acidic ribosomal protein of R. microplus ticks (pP0) as antigen have shown an efficacy around 90% against tick species from the Rhipicephalus genus. Given the high degree of sequence conservation among tick species, pP0 could be an antigen of versatile use in anti-tick vaccine formulations. In this paper, seven rabbits were immunized with a chemical conjugate of pP0 to keyhole limpet haemocyanin. Rabbits were challenged with an average of 1,900 Amblyomma mixtum larvae from a Cuban tick strain. The average number of recovered fed larvae and the viability of larvae in the moulting process were significantly lower in vaccinated animals compared with the control group. The overall vaccine efficacy of the P0 peptide antigen is 54% according to the calculated parameters.

Pollinators are crucial for ecosystem functionality; however, little is known about the plant species used by some of these, such as stingless bees. In this study, for the first time, pollen resources used by Melipona mimetica Cockerell (Hymenoptera: Apidae: Meliponini) and Scaptotrigona sp. Moure (Hymenoptera: Apidae: Meliponini) were identified through analysis of corbicular pollen found on worker bees in a dry forest in southern Ecuador. In total, 68 pollen types were identified belonging to 31 botanical families. The most represented plant families were Fabaceae (16%), Malvaceae (7%), and Boraginaceae (7%). Both stingless bee species exhibited a polylectic behavior, with an average of 16 pollen types collected by individual bees. Differences in abundances of pollen types collected by each species indicated distinct uses for these two bee species.

Resumen La enfermedad inflamatoria intestinal (EII) comprende un espectro de enfermedades crónicas inmunomediadas que afectan el tracto gastrointestinal, con inicio típico durante el comienzo de la edad adulta. Esta enfermedad ha tenido un incremento de su incidencia a nivel mundial, teniendo en Norteamérica una mayor incidencia. En relación con la enfermedad de Crohn (EC) (20,2 por cada 100 000 personas/año) y en Europa una incidencia de colitis ulcerativa (CU) (24,3 por 100 000 personas/año), considerando que no es una enfermedad curable, la remisión de la misma es el principal objetivo del manejo. Muchas mujeres se encuentran afectadas por EII durante distintos estadios de su vida, incluido durante la vida reproductiva, el embarazo y la menopausia. Es por lo anterior que la forma en la que se maneje la enfermedad en mujeres en edad reproductiva puede afectar el curso de la EII. Son muy relevantes las estrategias de tratamiento y mantenimiento de la salud, para las pacientes con deseo de paridad, la remisión de la enfermedad es muy importante en el momento de la concepción y durante todo el embarazo, para asegurar adecuados resultados tanto para la madre como para el feto. Es bien conocido que la enfermedad activa durante el momento de la concepción y el embarazo se asocia con desenlaces adversos. Además, la enfermedad perianal activa es indicación de parto por cesárea, lo que resulta en un mayor riesgo de cirugía intestinal y complicaciones en el posoperatorio. A continuación, presentamos un caso.
Abstract Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) comprises a spectrum of chronic immune-mediated diseases that affect the gastrointestinal tract. Onset typical occurs in adulthood. Its incidence is increasing everywhere, the highest incidence of Crohn's disease of 20.2 per 100,000 people/year is in North America while the incidence of ulcerative colitis is 24.3 per 100,000 people/year in Europe. Since it is not curable, the remission is the main objective of management. Many women are affected by IBD at different stages of their lives, including during reproductive life, pregnancy and menopause, so the way the disease is managed in reproductive age women can affect IBD's course. Treatment and maintenance strategies are very relevant. For patients with a desire to have children, disease remission is very important from conception through pregnancy to birth to ensure adequate results for both mother and fetus. It is well known that active disease during conception and pregnancy is associated with adverse outcomes of pregnancy. In addition, active perianal disease is an indication for cesarean delivery which entails increased risk of bowel surgery and complications in the postoperative period. We present a case of IBD during pregnancy.

Achalasia in pregnancy is an infrequent, poorly understood condition and its treatment is not clearly defined. The repercussions on the patients nutritional status are serious and in a pregnant woman have serious implications for the course of gestation, with high risk of intrauterine growth restriction, preterm delivery and even fetal loss; there are symptoms that can be confused with hyperemesis gravidarum delaying the diagnosis. The therapeutic options are medical treatment, endoscopic and surgical interventions; to decide what is the best treatment, we should be taken into account the severity, gestational age and patient conditions. Within the spectrum mentioned in the management include calcium antagonists and nitrates, however these have restrictions in pregnancy, another options are botulinum toxin, endoscopic pneumatic dilation, laparoscopic Heller myotomy and recently POEM. In pregnancy there is a few evidence in the literature and in this moment there are about 40 reported cases, some with complications such as fetal loss and maternal death. We present our experience at the San Ignacio University Hospital in Bogotá, Colombia, with a 26-year-old woman with a novo diagnosis of achalasia type II during the first trimester of pregnancy, with a clinical history of severe dysphagia associated with malnutrition. She was management with enteral nutrition support with nasogastric tube to achieve repletion of the body mass index (BMI) and after that, she had a endoscopic management with Rigiflex balloon dilation. It allowed to successfully carry out pregnancy without adverse effects on the mother or the fetus, with adequate evolution and oral tolerance without dysphagia. We consider that nutritional support is important prior to taking a desicion with this type of patient, in addition that endoscopic management with balloon dilation can be safe and effective for the management of achalasia in pregnancy.

Fifteen plant species from a protected cloud forest (CF) in Veracruz, Mexico, were screened for their inâ vitro capacity to inhibit the growth of the phytopathogenic bacteria Chryseobacterium sp., Pseudomonas cichorii, Pectobacterium carotovorum and Pantoea stewartii, causal agents of damage to crops like 'chayote', lettuce, potato and corn. As a result, the bioactivity of Turpinia insignis and Leandra cornoides is reported for the first time against Chryseobacterium sp. and P. cichorii. In addition, 24 and 18 compounds not described for these species were dereplicated by an UPLC/MS-MS method, respectively. The identified compounds included simple phenols, hydroxycinnamic acids, flavonoids and coumarins. The antibacterial assay of 12 of them demonstrated the bacteriostatic effect of vanillin, trans-cinnamic acid, scopoletin and umbelliferone against Chryseobacterium sp. These findings confirm for the first time the value of the CF plants from Veracruz as sources of bioactive natural products with antimicrobial properties against phytopathogenic bacteria.

La acalasia en el embarazo es una condición infrecuente, pobremente conocida y su manejo no esta claramente definido. Las repercusiones sobre el estado nutricional de los pacientes con esta entidad son graves y en una gestante tienen implicaciones serias para el curso de la gestación, con riesgo elevado de restricción del crecimiento intrauterino, parto pretérmino e incluso pérdida fetal; existen síntomas que pueden confundirse con hiperémesis gravídica retrasando el diagnóstico. Dentro de las opciones terapéuticas está el manejo médico, endoscópico e intervenciones quirúrgicas; para decidir cual es tratamiento adecuado se debe tener en cuenta la severidad, edad gestacional y condicien clasificaci de teratogenicidad conocido siendo su uso bienestar del binomioones del paciente, dentro del espectro mencionado en el manejo se incluyen los calcioantagonistas y nitratos, estos con restricciones en el embarazo, además toxina botulínica, dilatación neumática endoscópica, miotomía laparoscópica de Heller y recientemente el POEM; estas últimas con riesgo elevado de complicaciones. En el embarazo existe poca evidencia en la literatura y alrededor de 40 casos reportados, algunos con complicaciones como perdida fetal y muerte materna. Presentamos nuestra experiencia en el Hospital Universitario San Ignacio, Bogotá, Colombia de una mujer de 26 años de edad con diagnóstico de acalasia tipo 2 de novo durante el primer trimestre de gestación, cuadro clínico de disfagia severa asociado a desnutrición, a quien el manejo oportuno con soporte nutricional enteral con sonda nasogástrica para lograr repleción del índice de masa corporal (IMC) y luego de esto manejo endoscópico con dilatación con balón. Permitió llevar con éxito a término la gestación sin efectos adversos sobre la madre o el feto, con evolución adecuada y tolerancia a vía oral sin disfagia. Consideramos que es importante el soporte nutricional previo a la toma de conducta con este tipo paciente, además que el manejo endoscópico con dilatación puede ser seguro y efectivo a mediano plazo para el manejo de acalasia en embarazo.

Seed dispersal is an important ecosystem function, but it is contentious how structural and functional diversity of plant and bird communities are associated with seed-dispersal functions. We used structural equation models to test how structural (i.e., abundance, species richness) and functional diversity (i.e., functional dispersion and community-weighted means of functional traits) of fruiting plants and frugivorous birds directly and indirectly influence the respective components of fruit removal. We recorded plant and bird diversity in point counts and observed plant-frugivore interactions in a tropical mountain forest in Ecuador. We also recorded plant and bird morphological traits to calculate measures of functional diversity. We found that fruit abundance had a positive direct effect on bird abundance, which directly and indirectly mediated the abundance of removed fruits. Plant and bird species richness were only directly related to the richness of the removed fruits. Functional dispersion of the plant community was positively associated to that of the bird community and to that of the removed fruits. Consistently, we found positive associations between community-weighted means of plant and bird traits and between community-weighted means of plant traits and that of plants with removed fruits. In contrast, community-weighted means of the bird community were unrelated to that of the removed fruits. Overall, our results suggest that plant abundance directly and indirectly influences fruit removal, likely because of avian fruit tracking. However, we did not find strong links between the functional diversity of the frugivore community and removed fruits, suggesting that other factors in addition to plant-animal trait matching might be important for the functional diversity of removed fruits. Our findings highlight the importance of frugivore abundance for maintaining seed dispersal by animals in tropical forests.
