RESUMEN

This is a case report of a lactating woman in her twenties diagnosed with a breast pseudoaneurysm following a 14-gauge ultrasound-guided core needle biopsy detected by a Color Doppler exam, and treated with surgery. Further discussion concerning the patient's symptoms, useful imaging modalities, and treatment options are included. Knowledge on this complication is crucial for the correct diagnosis and best management and treatment.

RESUMEN

In this work, molybdenum-99 loaded columns were challenged with Bacillus subtilis vegetative cells and Bacillus pumilus spores inside and outside the alumina column, and microbial recovery and radiation effect were assessed. Alumina was a barrier for the passage of microorganisms regardless the species, whilst spores were more retained than vegetative cells with a lower microbial recovery, without significant differences between 9.25 and 74 GBq generators. Bacillus pumilus biological indicator showed lower recoveries, suggesting a radiation inactivating effect on microorganisms.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To identify probably benign breast masses using gray-scale sonography and to see if this strategy could reduce the number of biopsies of breast masses. METHODS: This retrospective study included 229 masses in 203 women who underwent sonographically guided percutaneous biopsy. Masses with a negative predictive value for malignancy >98% were retrospectively considered probably benign, and the potential impact of gray-scale sonography in reducing the number of biopsies if these masses were not biopsied was assessed. Assessments were performed considering all masses as a group as well as various subgroups. RESULTS: Round, ellipsoid, or lobulated masses with 3 or fewer lobulations, circumscribed margins, a longitudinal-anteroposterior diameter ratio > or =1.0 and no marked hypoechogenicity, posterior acoustic shad owing, internal microcalcifications, or altered surrounding breast tissue were considered probably benign. The sensitivity of gray-scale sonography to identify this subgroup was 98%, with a negative predictive value of 99%. If these masses were not biopsied, there would be a 42% reduction in the number of biopsies considering all masses, a 36% reduction for masses classified as Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System category 4, and a 59% reduction for masses exclusively analyzed with sonography. CONCLUSIONS: It is possible to identify probably benign breast masses using gray-scale sonography, and thereby to reduce the number of biopsies performed.

RESUMEN

Fat necrosis of the breast is a benign inflammatory process that may be mistaken for cancer in clinical examination or imaging studies. Although its mammographic manifestations are well known, data from other imaging modes, particularly sonography and magnetic resonance imaging, are limited. With the growing number of breast surgeries performed today (eg, breast-conserving, autologous tissue reconstruction, mammoplasty), fat necrosis is seen more often in daily practice. Knowledge of its imaging features could improve clinical management, including the avoidance of unnecessary biopsy procedures. The main objectives of this article are to review the literature and to relate the manifestations of fat necrosis on mammography, sonography, magnetic resonance imaging, and computed tomography to their associated histopathologic events.
