RESUMEN

This paper presents a narrative review protocol to explore how the proportion of child-specific content of pre-registration programmes in universities impact upon newly qualified nurses' perceptions of preparedness to care for children, young people (CYP), and their families. The preparation and education to become a nurse who cares for children and young people differs from country to country. Providers of pre-registration nurse education offer routes into nursing from diploma to degree and in some countries post-graduate routes. The United Kingdom offers pre-registration programmes leading to qualifying as a children's nurse whereas programmes in countries such as the USA and Canada lead to a professional registration as a registered nurse with postgraduate study to specialize in areas such as pediatrics. The role of pre-registration nursing programmes is to facilitate preparedness for practice. Preparation for practice can include theoretical teaching and practice learning through simulation and face-to-face experience with countries requiring different numbers of practice hours to be completed. Although practice hours are central to nursing education, there is limited evidence on the impact and portion of child-specific content, including clinical learning in preparation of newly qualified nurses to care for CYP and their families. A preliminary search of Prospero, CINAHL, Medline and Cochrane Database indicates that there are no current or in progress reviews identified. The Population of interest, Exposure of interest, and Outcome framework were used to define the research question and inform the eligibility criteria. The review will consider different research designs if related to the research question. The search strategy will conform to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines for systematic reviews. Two independent reviewers will be involved in the screening progress to determine the final studies for inclusion. Eligible studies will be assessed for methodological quality using the Joanna Briggs Institute critical appraisal tools. Extraction of study characteristics and data related to the research question will be extracted into a predefined table. Data synthesis will be conducted using a descriptive analytical approach to summarize extracted data.

BACKGROUND: Student nurses in the United Kingdom undertake field-specific pre-registration education. The implementation of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (2018) Future nurse: Standards of proficiency for registered nurses, has raised concerns that the increasingly generic component of pre-registration programmes is not adequately preparing newly qualified children's nurses to care for children safely. OBJECTIVE: To investigate how the introduction of the Nursing and Midwifery Council standards in the United Kingdom has impacted the structure and field specific content of pre-registration children's nursing programmes. SETTINGS: An online survey completed by 54 programmes, field, or professional leads linked to 76 pre-registration children's nursing programmes. This represents 80 % of higher education institutions with Nursing and Midwifery Council approved pre-registration children's nursing programmes across all four United Kingdom countries. METHODS: A survey to capture the current content and changes to curricula since the introduction of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (2018) Future nurse standards. The survey included closed-ended and open-ended questions. Closed-ended questions were statistically analysed using SPSS v.28 for Windows. Open-ended questions were thematically analysed using Quircos v.2.1. RESULTS: 50 % of respondents reported changes to theoretical content. In 27 programmes (35.5 %) there was a decrease in child-specific content. Child specific teaching methods accounted for less than 30 % of the content of all programmes whereas cross-field teaching methods (Adult, Mental Health, Learning Disability and Child learners together) accounted for over 70 % of the taught content. Analysis of qualitative data identified three themes: genericism as the focus, the challenge to achieve the standards' proficiencies, and dilution of child specific content. CONCLUSIONS: The survey responses show disparities in how United Kingdom higher education institutions have interpreted the Nursing and Midwifery Council standards highlighting academics concerns on the growing genericism within pre-registration children's nurse education nationally. These findings will inform the next stage of the project comparing the impact of greater or lesser degrees of genericism on the outcomes of the programme for newly qualified children's nurses.

Nursing student attrition is a significant concern in many countries, including the UK. Higher education institutions (HEIs) are seeking creative ways of improving retention and it is crucial to understand which support strategies encourage students to persist with their studies. This article describes a systematic review of the literature exploring nursing students' experiences and perceptions of support strategies used by HEIs to reduce attrition and improve retention. Having a sense of belonging, a connection with the university, self-confidence, self-efficacy and motivation appeared to make students more likely to stay on their course. Several support strategies appeared to enhance retention, including an automated text messaging system, an Academic, Personal and Professional Learning (APPL) support mechanism, a pastoral care support adviser service and an extracurricular student support group. Developing a holistic and multifaceted approach to retention involves working collaboratively with students to enhance the understanding of their needs.

RESUMEN

This article is the eighth in a series on the biological basis of child health. It describes the embryological development of the gastrointestinal (GI) system and some of the structural anomalies that may arise during that time and later affect GI functioning. The article also discusses the functions of the GI tract - including ingestion, digestion, absorption and defecation - and explains how these relate to GI conditions seen in infants and children. GI conditions are common in childhood and some of these will be medical emergencies, so it is important that children's nurses have knowledge of the GI system and of the presentation and management of GI conditions in children.
