RESUMEN

Background: It is currently considered that around 30% of chronic pain patients are totally refractory to medical treatment. Among patients who remain responsive to medical treatment, it is estimated that between 20% and 50% are likely to discontinue treatment due to severe side effects. Given these therapeutic difficulties, a significant number of patients turn to complementary therapies. Objective: The LineQuartz® is a medical device that combines 3 complementary therapies, namely, music therapy, light therapy, and chromotherapy. We propose to evaluate its effectiveness in chronic pain patients. Methods: Between October 2021 and October 2022, 44 patients aged between 23 and 85 years (mean: 55.4 years) were included in a prospective study. All patients had background pain intensity greater than 4/10 on the Numerical Pain Scale (NS). Treatment consisted of 4 half-hour sessions, divided into one session per week for 3 weeks (21 days). Patients were assessed by the Brief Pain Inventory (BPI) and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression scale (HAD) the day before starting treatment (Day 0) and the day after the end of treatment (Day 22). Results: Apart from the BPI item, "relationship with others," all items improved significantly (p < 0.050). Background pain intensity (NS) and frequency of painful attacks improved very significantly (p < 0.001). The HAD anxiety subscore was also significantly improved (p < 0.001). Discussion. This open pilot study supports the idea that LineQuartz® has a place among complementary therapies dedicated to the treatment of chronic pain. However, these results need to be confirmed by a controlled study.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: The environment and living conditions of parents during the "first 1000 days" period influence the short- and long-term health trajectories of children. Professionals following pregnancies play an important role in advising future parents to adopt health-promoting behaviors. It appeared necessary to describe the prevention messages transmitted by professionals early in pregnancy. OBJECTIVES: To identify the prevention messages systematically delivered during the first trimester of pregnancy and determine the degree of priority that professionals (midwives, obstetricians, general practitioners) of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté give to them. RESULTS: Prevention messages on infectious risk were addressed by 96.5% of respondents, and those on risk behaviors and addictions by 93.7%. Dietary balance and sports activities (78.5%), as well as risks in the daily life (47.1%) were less delivered. The messages that professionals declared to be delivered systematically to pregnant women during the first trimester were generally those that they considered to be priorities. There were some differences depending on the professional. Regarding information media, the majority of respondents did not use any. They agreed on the importance of a paper-based information medium and wished to be able to rely on a digital medium (62.6%). CONCLUSION: The co-construction of support that meets the needs of both women and professionals and that is validated by health authorities would contribute to better consideration and promotion of health-promoting behaviors by parents, by promoting empowerment of women and couples from the beginning of pregnancy.

Abstract Introduction. Falls are a major public health problem as a result of the high frequency of these events and morbidity/mortality among elderly persons. A prevention policy is a potential means to reduce the incidence of falls. This study aimed to assess the impact of a balance workshop in a geriatric day-hospital (GDH) on the prevention of falls in olderadults. METHOD: This was a prospective, single centre study conducted in the GDH of a general hospital. Motor tests and a psychological assessment were performed at 2 months (M2), 6 months (M6)and 1 year (M12). RESULTS: Sixty-five patients were included, aged 82.0 ± 7.7 years. Fifty-eight were women (89.2%). The statistical analyses showed a significant improvement in all motor tests during the follow-up at the defined intervals. The Timed Up and Go test (s) significantly decreased between inclusion, 19.1 ± 8.2, and M2, 15.8 ± 6.6 (P = 0.01 inclusion vs M2), then was stable at M6, 16.4 ± 6.9 (P = 0.04 inclusion vs M6) and at M12, 16.3 ± 6.4 (P = 0.04 inclusion vs M12). There was also significant psychological improvement throughout follow-up. The score on the Falls Efficacy Scale International-I decreased from 11.6 ± 6.1 at inclusion to 8.2 ± 5.5 at M2 (P = 0.001 inclusion vs. M2), 9.2 ± 6.0 at M6 (P = 0.02 inclusion vs. M6), and 9.0 ± 6.1 at M12 (P = 0.02 inclusion vs. M12). CONCLUSION: This study highlights the value and the need for balancing workshops in primary care.

RESUMEN

Diethyl carbonate and dimethyl carbonate are prototype examples of eco-friendly solvents used in lithium-ion batteries. Nevertheless, their degradation products affect both the battery performance and its safety. Therefore, it is of paramount importance to understand the reaction mechanisms involved in the ageing processes. Among those, redox processes are likely to play a critical role. Here we show that radiolysis is an ideal tool to generate the electrolytes degradation products. The major gases detected after irradiation (H2, CH4, C2H6, CO and CO2) are identified and quantified. Moreover, the chemical compounds formed in the liquid phase are characterized by different mass spectrometry techniques. Reaction mechanisms are then proposed. The detected products are consistent with those of the cycling of Li-based cells. This demonstrates that radiolysis is a versatile and very helpful tool to better understand the phenomena occurring in lithium-ion batteries.
