One hundred seven freshman student athletes in 17 different women's and men's intercollegiate sports were required to attend evening study sessions. The student athletes completed academic assignments and studied for tests primarily in cooperative learning groups. As gauges of the program's impact on the participants, 3 questionnaires were administered to a sample of 50 (25 women and 25 men). The respondents reported that (a) they worked cooperatively on academic assignments, (b) the program staff provided both academic and personal support while structuring and facilitating cooperative learning groups, and (c) they themselves were highly task oriented, confident of their academic ability, and involved in positive and supportive relationships with their fellow participants.

The presence and/or depth of myometrial invasion of endometrial adenocarcinoma has important prognostic and therapeutic implications. Fifteen patients with histologically proven endometrial cancer underwent preoperative evaluation with sonography (US) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to assess depth of invasion. Using criteria of greater than or equal to 50% of myometrial wall involvement as representing deep invasion, and less than 50% as superficial invasion, US was more accurate than MRI in five cases; in three MRI was more accurate than US; both MRI and US were equally accurate in four; neither was accurate in three. Polypoid lesions caused the greatest number of false positive reports of deep invasion with both MRI and US. Preliminary results indicate that US and MRI have promise as preoperative tests to assess the extent of myometrial invasion.

An elderly woman had an appendicovaginal fistula. Within the appendix was a well differentiated mucin-producing cystadenocarcinoma that extended through the fistula and onto the vaginal mucosal surface. The development of this fistula was probably related to the tumor and a previous hysterectomy, which allowed close proximity of the tip of the appendix to the vaginal vault.

The depth of myometrial invasion by endometrial carcinoma was evaluated using real-time sonography (US) in 20 patients with histologically proved adenocarcinoma of the endometrium. In 14 of 20 (70%) cases, US-based estimation of the depth of myometrial invasion was within 10% of the actual measurement in the gross specimen. The US-based estimation of tumor invasion was low in seven patients, high in four patients, and agreed with pathologic findings (+/- 5%) in nine patients. In four patients with polypoid intraluminal extension of tumor, a deeply invasive tumor was suspected on US but was not found on pathologic examination. In 12 superficially invasive tumors, the continuity of the demarcating subendometrial halo was intact in nine and incomplete in three. In six patients with deeply invasive tumors, this zone was partially disrupted in four, totally disrupted in one, and intact in one. Errors of estimation of the depth of myometrial invasion on US most frequently occurred when a tumor had a significant intraluminal polypoid extension. Demonstration of a subendometrial halo usually indicated superficial invasion, whereas the absence of a halo was frequently associated with deep invasion.

The clinical courses of 30 patients with 41 nephrostomy catheters were followed. Duration of drainage ranged from 2 days to 15 months with a mean of 3.7 months. The most common complications were hemorrhage (28%), infection (70%), and blockage of catheter (65%). No deaths occurred as a result of these complications. Renal function recovered in 14 of 20 patients (70%) who presented with elevated creatinine values. Twenty-six of 28 patients with malignant obstruction were able to receive further therapy. The only long-term survivors presented with primary advanced cervical cancer.
