RESUMEN

Background: Previous studies indicated that exposure to ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) could increase the risk of metabolic syndrome (MetS). However, the specific impact of PM2.5 chemical components remains uncertain. Methods: A national cross-sectional study of 12,846 Chinese middle-aged and older adults was conducted. Satellite-based spatiotemporal models were employed to determine the 3-year average PM2.5 components exposure, including sulfates (SO4 2-), nitrates (NO3 -), ammonia (NH4 +), black carbon (BC), and organic matter (OM). Generalized linear models were used to investigate the associations of PM2.5 components with MetS and the components of MetS, and restricted cubic splines curves were used to establish the exposure-response relationships between PM2.5 components with MetS, as well as the components of MetS. Results: MetS risk increased by 35.1, 33.5, 33.6, 31.2, 32.4, and 31.4% for every inter-quartile range rise in PM2.5, SO4 2-, NO3 -, NH4 +, OM and BC, respectively. For MetS components, PM2.5 chemical components were associated with evaluated risks of central obesity, high blood pressure (high-BP), high fasting glucose (high-FBG), and low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (low-HDL). Conclusion: This study indicated that exposure to PM2.5 components is related to increased risk of MetS and its components, including central obesity, high-BP, high-FBG, and low-HDL. Moreover, we found that the adverse effect of PM2.5 chemical components on MetS was more sensitive to people who were single, divorced, or widowed than married people.

Widespread glyphosate contamination in the environment and its endocrine-disrupting potential are concerning. However, evidence of glyphosate's effects on glycemic health is limited. To examine the association between glyphosate and glucose homeostasis in the general US population, a total of 3038 individuals were enrolled from the 2013-2016 cycles of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Survey-weighted linear regression and restricted cubic spline curves were used to detect the associations between glyphosate and glycemic disorders. The effects of interactions between sex hormones and glyphosate on glycemic outcomes were evaluated. The results showed that glyphosate was significantly linked to increased glycated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels (ß = 0.01; 95%CI, 0.01 to 0.02; p = 0.001) and the compromised homeostatic model assessment of beta-cell function (HOMA-beta) scores (ß = -0.09; 95%CI, -0.17 to -0.01; p = 0.024). More importantly, these "glyphosate-glycemic disorder" associations were significantly modified by sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG; P for interaction < 0.05), with more pronounced relationships being identified in individuals with low SHBG levels. Our findings indicate that glyphosate is correlated with glucose dyshomeostasis. Individuals with low SHBG levels exhibited susceptibility to glyphosate-related glycemic toxicity; therefore, it might be prudent to determine glycemic health in those subjects with glyphosate exposure.

BACKGROUND: This study addresses the nexus of stress, physical exercise, and internet addiction in college students, aiming to unravel their complex interactions. With prior research hinting at correlations, this study seeks deeper insights into the optimal exercise duration and the mediating role of physical activity in the stress-internet addiction relationship. METHODS: We examined 2892 Chinese college students, assessing psychosocial traits via established scales: the Chinese Internet Addiction Scale (CIAS-R), International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), and DASS-21 for stress. We adopted a questionnaire survey method to collect data, and through convenience sampling, participants were selected. Analysis involved Structural Equation Model (SEM) and restricted cubic splines (RCS). RESULTS: Among participants, 22.0 % self-reported internet addiction symptoms. Notably, a non-linear correlation between moderate (MPA) and vigorous physical activity (VPA) and internet addiction was evident (P < 0.001), while light physical activity (LPA) showed no significant association (P = 0.182). MPA initially reduced internet addiction as activity hours increased, but its efficacy lessened after 0.8 h/day. Conversely, VPA's impact fluctuated, declining from 0 to 0.18 h/day, then stabilizing. SEM analysis highlighted VPA and MPA's partial mediation in the stress-internet addiction relationship. Specifically, the path coefficient from stress to MPA was -0.037 (P < 0.05), and the path coefficient from MPA to internet addiction was -0.056 (P < 0.01). Additionally, the path coefficient from stress to VPA was -0.067 (P < 0.001), and the path coefficient from VPA to internet addiction was -0.102 (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: This study unveils the intricate interplay between physical activity, stress, and internet addiction among college students. With 22.0 % reporting addiction symptoms, urgent interventions tailored to promoting healthy physical activity levels are imperative to mitigate internet addiction risks. LIMITATIONS: The cross-sectional nature of our design precludes the establishment of causal relationships between psychological stress and internet addiction.

INTRODUCTION: Existing studies suggest that the number of night shifts may impact the occurrence of adverse events. However, while this relationship is well-documented, previous research has not thoroughly examined the non-linear associations between night shifts and adverse events among nursing staff, which remains a gap in our understanding. METHODS: Participants were 1,774 Chinese nurse staff. Psychosocial characteristics were screened by The Chinese version of the multidimensional scale of perceived social support (MSPSS) for social support, the 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) for depressive symptoms, the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) for anxiety symptoms. Binary logistic regression and restricted cubic splines were applied to analyze the data. The statistical software used were R version 3.6.2 and SPSS version 22.0. RESULTS: Over the past year, 325 cases (18.3%) were classified as adverse events. Logistic regression unveiled that social support played a protective role against adverse events, with an OR of 0.991 (95% CI: 0.983, 0.999). Furthermore, night shifts continued to surface as a substantial risk factor for adverse events, with an OR to 1.300 (95% CI: 1.181, 1.431). The restricted cubic spline regression model highlights a nonlinear relationship between night shifts and adverse events (P for non-liner < 0.001). The probability of adverse events increases with the number of night shifts, but compared to individuals working 3-4 night shifts per month, those working 5-6 night shifts per month have a lower probability of adverse events. CONCLUSION: Our findings indicate a non-linear relationship between the frequency of night shifts and adverse events, suggesting a complex interplay of factors. This highlights the need for nursing practice and policy to consider the intricacies of night shift scheduling and explore more reasonable rostering strategies to mitigate the probability of adverse events.

Background: The occupational burnout status of nurses in China warrants attention. Childhood trauma, loneliness, and emotional disturbance are significant predictors of this burnout, yet few studies have delved into the underlying mechanisms. This study seeks to explore the mediating pathway from childhood trauma to loneliness, emotional disturbance, and ultimately occupational burnout among nurses through a cross-sectional analysis. Method: Data for the study were collected from Yunnan province, China, from 11 July to 26 July 2022. Key variables were measured using standardized scales: the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire Short Form for childhood trauma, the three-item loneliness scale for loneliness, the Patient Health Questionnaire and the Generalized Anxiety Disorder questionnaire for emotional disturbance, and the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Service Survey for occupational burnout. Mediation modeling analysis was employed for data analysis to test the effect of loneliness and emotional disturbance on the association between childhood trauma and occupational burnout. Data analysis was conducted using AMOS and SPSS software. Results: Loneliness and emotional disturbance fully mediated the association between childhood trauma and emotional exhaustion [indirect effect (95% CI) = 0.228 (0.196, 0.270)]. Loneliness and emotional disturbance partially mediated the association between childhood trauma [indirect effect (95% CI) = -0.020 (-0.039, 0.002)] and personal accomplishment or depersonalization [indirect effect (95% CI) = 0.221 (0.186, 0.255)]. Conclusion: Childhood trauma could affect occupational burnout through loneliness and emotional disturbance among nurses. Preventive strategies could include protective interventions like treatment of loneliness and emotional disturbance, especially in nurses who experienced childhood trauma.

BACKGROUND: Nurses face disproportionately high rates of suicidal ideation and non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI). The role of workplace violence, loneliness, and depressive symptoms in exacerbating these issues is poorly understood. This study aims to explore these relationships to inform interventions for improving nurses' mental health. METHODS: A cross-sectional study involving 1,774 Chinese nurse staff selected through convenient sampling methods was conducted. Workplace violence, depressive symptoms, and loneliness were assessed using the Chinese versions of the Workplace Violence Scale (WVS), the 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), and a three-item loneliness scale, respectively. Participants completed self-report questionnaires anonymously to ensure adherence to ethical standards. Statistical analysis utilized structural equation modeling (SEM) to examine the intricate relationships among variables, thereby elucidating the impact of workplace violence, loneliness, and depressive symptoms on nurses' suicidal ideation/NSSI outcomes. RESULTS: Nurse staff 165 (7.8%) were reported different level of suicidal ideation and 139 (7.8%) participants were reported different level of NSSI. And the final model of workplace violence on suicidal ideation shown a good model fit index (CMIN/DF = 3.482 NFI = 0.969 CFI = 0.977 TLI = 0.955 RFI = 0.938, RMSEA = 0.037 SRMR = 0.035). The pathway of workplace violence to loneliness (ß = 0.163, P < 0.001), the indirect effect of workplace violence on suicidal ideation via loneliness and depressive symptoms were 0.100 (95%CI = 0.085, 0.121), the indirect effect of loneliness on suicidal ideation via depressive symptoms were 0.128 (95%CI = 0.100, 0.158). Similarly, the final model of workplace violence on NSSI shown a good model fit index (CMIN/DF = 3.482 NFI = 0.967 CFI = 0.976 TLI = 0.953 RFI = 0.935, RMSEA = 0.037 SRMR = 0.034), the pathways of workplace violence to NSSI (ß = 0.115, P < 0.001), the indirect effect of workplace violence on NSSI via loneliness and depressive symptoms were 0.075 (95%CI = 0.055, 0.096), the indirect effect of loneliness on NSSI via depressive symptoms were 0.102 (95%CI = 0.076, 0.130). CONCLUSION: Our study unveils the role of workplace violence in nurses' suicidal ideation and NSSI, mediated by loneliness and depressive symptoms. Interventions targeting workplace violence are crucial for nurses' well-being, potentially reducing loneliness and depressive symptoms and lowering the risk of suicidal ideation and NSSI. However, further research is needed to explore additional mediators and pathways, employing longitudinal designs to establish causality and develop tailored interventions for nurses affected by workplace violence.

BACKGROUND: Nurses frequently endure elevated levels of psychosocial stress, which often correlates with an increased suicide risk. This study aimed to investigate the impact of latent psychosocial characteristic patterns on suicidal ideation and non-suicidal self-injury among nursing staff. METHOD: Participants were recruited from the Dehong districts of Yunnan province, China, between July 11th and July 26th, 2022. Subgroups were identified using variables linked to suicidal ideation and non-suicidal self-injury, including perceived cognitive deficits, anxiety symptoms, depressive symptoms, resilience, social support, childhood trauma, loneliness, and sleep quality. Measurement tools included the Perceived Deficit Questionnaire-5-item (PDQ-5), Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 items (GAD-7), Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale-10 items (CD-RISC10), Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS), Childhood Trauma Questionnaire-Short Form (CTQ-SF), Three-Item Loneliness Scale, and a single-item sleep quality scale. RESULTS: Latent profile analysis (LPA) revealed four distinct psychosocial characteristic patterns: "class 1," "class 2," "class 3," and "class 4." Compared to class 2, individuals in class 1 had a sixfold increased risk of suicidal ideation (OR = 6.59, 95%CI = 4.42-9.81) and a fivefold increased risk of non-suicidal self-injury (OR = 5.13, 95%CI = 3.38-7.78). Similarly, class 4 individuals had twice the risk of suicidal ideation (OR = 2.13, 95%CI = 1.25-3.62) and non-suicidal self-injury (OR = 2.13, 95%CI = 1.25-3.65) compared to class 2. Conversely, class 3 individuals had a lower risk of suicidal ideation (OR = 0.21, 95%CI = 0.11-0.42) and non-suicidal self-injury (OR = 0.15, 95%CI = 0.07-0.36) than class 2. Additionally, divorced/other marital status individuals had a higher risk of suicidal ideation (OR = 2.34, 95%CI = 1.02-5.35) and non-suicidal self-injury (OR = 2.58, 95%CI = 1.01-6.65) compared to married individuals, while unmarried individuals had a lower risk of suicidal ideation (OR = 0.58, 95%CI = 0.37-0.91). CONCLUSIONS: The study identified eight important psychosocial factors divided into four latent pattern classes. Individuals in "class 1" and "class 4" were more likely to have a higher risk of suicidal ideation and non-suicidal self-injury, while those in "class 3" were more likely to have a lower risk of both outcomes. It is suggested that further research should focus on "class 1" and "class 4" for targeted intervention.

Previous studies indicated per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) were related to uric acid and hyperuricemia risk, but evidence for the exposure-response (E-R) curves and combined effect of PFAS mixture is limited. Moreover, the potential mediation effect of kidney function was not assessed. Hence, we conducted a national cross-sectional study involving 13,979 US adults in NHANES 2003-2018 to examine the associations of serum PFAS with uric acid and hyperuricemia risk, and the mediation effects of kidney function. Generalized linear models and E-R curves showed positive associations of individual PFAS with uric acid and hyperuricemia risk, and nearly linear E-R curves indicated no safe threshold for PFAS. Weighted quantile sum regression found positive associations of PFAS mixture with uric acid and hyperuricemia risk, and PFOA was the dominant contributor to the adverse effect of PFAS on uric acid and hyperuricemia risk. Causal mediation analysis indicated significant mediation effects of kidney function decline in the associations of PFAS with uric acid and hyperuricemia risk, with the mediated proportion ranging from 19 % to 57 %. Our findings suggested that PFAS, especially PFOA, may cause increased uric acid and hyperuricemia risk increase even at low levels, and kidney function decline plays a crucial mediation effect.

Background: Occupational burnout is intricately linked to a spectrum of physical disorders encompassing respiratory, cardiovascular, and gastrointestinal conditions, as well as manifestations such as headaches, type 2 diabetes, elevated cholesterol levels, chronic fatigue, and muscle pain. Despite this association, there remains a paucity of research on the specific risk factors contributing to burnout among nurses in China. Methods: This cross-sectional study utilized convenience sampling to recruit participants, with data analyzed from 1,774 nurse staffs. Psychosocial traits were assessed using the Three-Item Loneliness Scale for loneliness, the Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7-item scale (GAD-7) for anxiety symptoms, the 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) for depressive symptoms, the Connor Davidson Resilience Scale-10 item (CDRISC-10) for resilience, and the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Service Survey (MBI-HSS) for burn out. Restrictive cubic spline analysis to investigate the dose-response relationship between years of experience and burn out. Multivariate linear regression was employed to investigate the relationship between burnout and various risk factors. Results: After controlling for basic demographic variables, good sleep quality was associated with a reduction in emotional exhaustion (ß = -0.307, p < 0.001), while loneliness (ß = 1.334, p < 0.001), depressive symptoms (ß = 0.896, p < 0.001), and anxiety symptoms (ß = 0.504, p < 0.001) were significantly associated with increased emotional exhaustion. Moreover, higher levels of resilience were positively associated with personal accomplishment (ß = 0.635, p < 0.001). Regarding depersonalization, loneliness (ß = 0.577, p < 0.001), depressive symptoms (ß = 0.429, p < 0.001), and anxiety symptoms (ß = 0.152, p < 0.01) were found to increase its level. Conversely, good resilience was associated with a decrease in depersonalization (ß = -0.069, p < 0.001). The non-liner association between year of experience and emotional exhaustion was significantly (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Our findings revealed that significant risk factors contributing to burnout among nursing staff including bad sleep quality, loneliness, lower level of resilience, anxiety symptoms, depressive symptoms. Moreover, a nonlinear correlation between years of experience and the likelihood of experiencing emotional exhaustion was exist.

Exposure to particulate matter (PM) has been linked to metabolic diseases. However, the effects of PM with an aerodynamic diameter ≤ 1.0 µm (PM1) on metabolic diseases remain unclear. This study is aimed at assessing the associations of PM1 with metabolic disease risk and quantifying the concentration-response (C-R) relationship of PM1 with metabolic disease risk. A national cross-sectional study was conducted, including 12,495 middle-aged and older adults in 123 Chinese cities. The two-year average concentration of PM1 was evaluated using satellite-based spatiotemporal models. Metabolic diseases, including abdominal obesity, diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and metabolic syndrome, were identified based on physical examination, blood standard biochemistry examination, and self-reported disease histories. Generalized linear models and C-R curves were used to evaluate the associations of PM1 with metabolic diseases. A total of 12,495 participants were included in this study, with a prevalence of 45.73% for abdominal obesity, 20.22% for diabetes, 42.46% for hypertension, 41.01% for dyslipidemia, and 33.78% for metabolic syndrome. The mean ± standard deviation age of participants was 58.79 ± 13.14 years. In addition to dyslipidemia, exposure to PM1 was associated with increased risks of abdominal obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and metabolic syndrome. Each 10 µg/m3 increase in PM1 concentrations was associated with 39% (odds ratio (OR) = 1.39, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.33, 1.46) increase in abdominal obesity, 18% (OR = 1.18, 95%CI 1.12, 1.25) increase in diabetes, 11% (OR = 1.11, 95%CI 1.06, 1.16) increase in hypertension, and 25% (OR = 1.25, 95%CI 1.19, 1.31) in metabolic syndrome, respectively. C-R curves showed that the OR values of abdominal obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and metabolic syndrome were increased gradually with the increase of PM1 concentrations. Subgroup analysis indicated that exposure to PM1 was associated with increased metabolic disease risks among participants with different lifestyles and found that solid fuel users were more susceptible to PM1 than clean fuel users. This national cross-sectional study indicated that exposure to higher PM1 might increase abdominal obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and metabolic syndrome risk, and solid fuel use might accelerate the adverse effects of PM1 on metabolic syndrome risk. Further longitudinal cohort studies are warranted to establish a causal inference between PM1 exposure and metabolic disease risk.

BACKGROUND: Owing to different social background factor in Yunnan-Myanmar Chinese border region, stressful working environment may lead to extra psychological burden among nurse staff in China. However, the prevalence of workplace violence and its effect on psychological characteristics among nurse staff are still unclear. This study aims to explore the effect of workplace violence against psychological health among nurse staff from Yunnan-Myanmar Chinese border region. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 18 local governmental hospitals in Dehong districts. Participants were 1,774 nurses. Psychosocial characteristics were screened by sleep quality, the 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire for depressive symptoms, the generalized anxiety disorder-7 for anxiety symptoms, the Connor Davidson Resilience Scale - 10 item for resilience, the multidimensional scale of perceived social support for social support, the Chinese version of Work place Violence Scale for workplace violence. Propensity score matching and multivariate linear regression were applied to analyze the data. RESULTS: The nurse staff with workplace violence have a higher risk of bad sleep quality (b = -0.883, 95%CI = [-1.171, -0.595]), anxiety symptoms (b = 2.531, 95%CI = [2.031, 3.031]) and depressive symptoms (b = 3.227, 95%CI = [2.635, 3.819]), loneliness (b = 0.683, 95%CI = [0.503, 0.863]), perceived cognitive deficits (b = 1.629, 95%CI = [1.131, 2.127]), poor resilience (b = -2.012, 95%CI = [-2.963, -1.061]), and poor social support (b = -5.659, 95%CI = [-7.307, -4.011]). CONCLUSIONS: Preventing workplace violence can improve mental health outcomes significantly among nurse staff, including loneliness, perceived cognitive deficits, anxiety symptoms, depressive symptoms, sleep quality, resilience and social support.

Background: Long-term exposure to air pollution and physical activity (PA) are linked to blood pressure and hypertension. However, the joint effect of air pollution and PA on blood pressure and hypertension are still unknown in Chinese middle-aged and older adults. Methods: A total of 14,622 middle-aged and older adults from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study wave 3 were included in this study. Ambient air pollution [particulate matter with diameter ≤ 2.5 µm (PM2.5), or ≤10 µm (PM10), sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), carbonic oxide (CO)] were estimated using satellite-based spatiotemporal models. PA was investigated using International Physical Activity Questionnaire. Generalized linear models were used to examine the associations of air pollution, PA score with blood pressure [systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), and mean arterial pressure (MAP)], and the prevalence of hypertension. Subgroup analysis was conducted to investigate the effects of air pollution on blood pressure and the prevalence of hypertension in different PA groups. Results: The results showed that for each inter-quartile range (IQR) increase in PM2.5 (25.45 µg/m3), PM10 (40.56 µg/m3), SO2 (18.61 µg/m3), NO2 (11.16 µg/m3), CO (0.42 mg/m3) and PA score (161.3 MET/h-week), the adjusted odd ratio (OR) of hypertension was 1.207 (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.137, 1.281), 1.189 (95%CI: 1.122, 1.260), 1.186 (95%CI: 1.112, 1.266), 1.186 (95%CI: 1.116, 1.260), 1.288 (95%CI: 1.223, 1.357), 0.948 (95%CI: 0.899, 0.999), respectively. Long-term exposure to PM2.5, PM10, SO2, NO2, and CO was associated with increased SBP, DBP, and MAP levels. For example, each IQR increase in PM2.5 was associated with 1.20 mmHg (95%CI: 0.69, 1.72) change in SBP, 0.66 mmHg (95%CI: 0.36, 0.97) change in DBP, and 0.84 mmHg (95%CI: 0.49, 1.19) change in MAP levels, respectively. Each IQR increase in PA score was associated with -0.56 mmHg (95%CI: -1.03, -0.09) change in SBP, -0.32 mmHg (95%CI: -0.59, -0.05) change in DBP, and -0.33 mmHg (95%CI: -0.64, -0.02) change in MAP levels, respectively. Subgroup analysis found that the estimated effects in the sufficient PA group were lower than that in the insufficient PA group. Conclusion: Long-term exposure to air pollutants is associated with increased blood pressure and hypertension risk, while high-level PA is associated with decreased blood pressure and hypertension risk. Strengthening PA might attenuate the adverse effects of air pollution on blood pressure and hypertension risk.

BACKGROUND: China has a significant number of left-behind families. This study focuses on the long-term effects of childhood left-behind experience on different type of childhood trauma and mental health outcomes in later life development. METHODS: participants were 67 795 Chinese young adults. Psychosocial characteristics were screened by sleep quality, the nine-item Patient Health Questionnaire for depressive symptoms, the generalized anxiety disorder-7 for anxiety symptoms, trauma screening questionnaire for post-traumatic stress, a short form of the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire for childhood trauma. Propensity score matching (PSM) and multivariate linear regression were applied to analyze the data. RESULTS: the results of the post-PSM analysis showed that the distributions of propensity scores for the two groups were approximately equal. And the total sample size in post-analysis dropped to 2358 (Nnuclear family = 1179, Nleft-behind family = 1179), with unmatched cases excluded. Post-matching results showed that the students from left-behind family were significantly associated with severer post-traumatic stress (b = 0.39, 95% CI = [0.15, 0.62]), loneliness (b = 0.29, 95% CI = [0.16, 0.42]), depressive symptoms (b = 0.44, 95% CI = [0.06, 0.82]) and CTQ-physical neglect (b = 0.34, 95% CI = [0.11, 0.58]). CONCLUSION: our study showed that childhood left-behind experiences are tightly related to childhood trauma experience and mental health issues (post-traumatic stress, loneliness and depression) in late adolescents.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Eating Disorders (ED) result in impaired well-being, but there exist an insufficient number of studies that have focused on the influence of sex and sexual orientation disparities within ED behaviors. Thus, we aimed to investigate ED behaviors among male and female adolescents with different sexual orientations in a school sample to understand prevalence and correlates of different ED behaviors. METHOD: Data was analysed from 11,440 Chinese school adolescents with a mean age of 14.74 years (SD = 1.46). Reported data was gathered on sociodemographic information including sexual orientation, ED behaviors, health factors (reported health, cognitive function), mental health factors (depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, non-suicidal self-injurious behavior), and social functioning (school bully victimization, and school bully perpetration). Logistic regression models were used to estimate the associations with ED behaviors, using the heterosexual orientation as the reference group as they are the majority. RESULTS: Compared to female adolescents, male adolescents reported lower anxiety symptoms (t = - 12.39, p < 0.001, Cohen's d = - 0.233), were more likely to be the perpetrator of school bullying (χ2 = 190.61, p < 0.001, φ = 0.129), and reported a lower likelihood of taking dietary restriction (χ2 = 290.08, p < 0.001, φ = 0.160). Overall, the prevalence of dietary restriction presented sex disparities. Adolescents who reported no sexual attraction were less likely to engage in ED behaviors. Using heterosexual orientation as the reference group, the group who reported no sexual attraction was associated with lower risk in dietary restriction and purging in both male and female adolescents. Using the heterosexual orientation as the reference group, female sexual minority groups were at high risk of ED behaviors, with bisexual orientation and gay/lesbian orientation having a higher likelihood of engaging in objective binge eating. CONCLUSIONS: The results revealed significant sex and sexual orientation differences of ED behaviors. The study suggests that adolescents is a period of sexuality development and could be critical for understanding adolescents' eating behaviors. It is important to guide adolescents to healthy eating during their development and considerations should be made by clinicians when creating interventions for ED behaviors among the different sex and sexual orientation groups.

BACKGROUND: Men who have sex with men (MSM) have become a high risk population of HIV infection due to their risky sexual behaviors. The latent pattern of psychosocial characteristics plays an important effect in HIV-related risky behaviors among HIV-negative MSM. METHOD: Participants were recruited from Wuhan, Nanchang, and Changsha city from September 2017 to January 2018. Social support was assessed by the multidimensional scale of social support, Connor-Davidson Resilience scale-10 items for reliance, the assessment of Stigma towards Homosexuality for sexual minority stigma, the Likert subscale of nondisclosure for identity concealment, the ACE questionnaire-Kaiser-CDC for adverse childhood experience, the Centers for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale for depression. Latent profile analysis (LPA) and multivariate regression were used to analyze the data. RESULTS: Three psychosocial characteristic patterns were revealed by the LPA. "Social support and resilience group" (SR group), "Identity concealment group" (IC group) and "Adverse childhood experience" (ACE group) were identified, respectively. In comparison with "SR group", "IC group" have a higher likelihood of one-night male partners (AOR = 2.74, 95%CI = [1.54, 4.90]), both fixed and one-night male partners (AOR = 2.01, 95%CI = [1.34, 3.01]) and HIV-unsure male partner (AOR = 2.12, 95%CI = [1.44, 3.13]). Similarly, "ACE group" were more likely having inconsistent condom use (AOR = 2.58, 95%CI = [1.41, 4.73]), and having sex with HIV-positive male partner (AOR = 4.90, 95%CI = [1.95, 12.30]) with comparison of "SR group". In addition, we further revealed that "ACE group" had a higher ratio (90.0%) of inconsistent condom use among MSM whose male partners were HIV-positive. CONCLUSIONS: Six important psychosocial factors were divided into three latent pattern classes. Compared with "SR group", "IC group" and "ACE group" were more likely to engage in HIV-related risky sexual behaviors. Further research may pay more attention to "IC group" and "ACE group" for targeted intervention.

Evidence of more recent studies should be updated to evaluate the effect of long-term exposure to particulate matter (PM) on blood pressure and hypertension.        Studies of long-term effects of PM1, PM2.5 and PM10 on blood pressure (SBP, DBP, MAP), hypertension were searched in Pubmed, Web of Science and Embase before May, 2021. Meta-analysis of 41 studies showed that exposure to PM1, PM2.5 was associated with SBP (1.76 mmHg (95%CI:0.71, 2.80) and 0.63 mmHg (95%CI:0.40, 0.85), per 10 µg/m3 increase in PM), all three air pollutants (PM1, PM2.5, PM10) was associated with DBP (1.16 mmHg (95%CI:0.34, 1.99), 0.31 mmHg (95%CI:0.16, 0.47), 1.17 mmHg (95%CI:0.24, 2.09), respectively. As for hypertension, PM1, PM2.5 and PM10 were all significantly associated with higher risk of hypertension (OR=1.27 (95%CI:1.06, 1.52), 1.15 (95%CI:1.10, 1.20) and 1.11 (95%CI:1.07, 1.16). In conclusion, our study indicated a positive association between long-term exposure to particulate matter and increased blood pressure, hypertension.

BACKGROUND: Population aging has led to depression becoming a serious public health problem both in China and worldwide. Marital relationships, relationships with their children, and air pollution might play an important role in the process of depressive disorders. In this study, we aimed to reveal the mechanism of the effects of these factors on depression. METHODS: Participants were recruited from The China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) (wave 4) from July 2018 to March 2019. Depression symptoms were evaluated using the 10-item Center for Epidemiologic Studies depression scale (CESD-10). Marital relationships, relationships with their children, air quality satisfaction, and perceived health status were analyzed using Likert 5-point evaluation methods. Structural equation modeling-path (SEM) models were used to explore these variables' mediation effects on depression symptoms. RESULTS: Marital relationships, relationships with their children, air quality satisfaction, perceived health status, and depression symptoms were significantly associated with each other (P < 0.001). Mediation analysis showed that family relationships (standardized beta = -0.28 [-0.31, -0.26]) and quality satisfaction (standardized beta = -0.03 [-0.05, -0.01]) had negative effects on depression symptoms. The total indirect effects of family relationships and air quality satisfaction on depression symptoms were -0.06 (95% confidence interval (CI) = [-0.07, -0.05]) and -0.016 (95% CI = [-0.02, -0.01]), respectively. CONCLUSION: Family relationships, air quality satisfaction, and perceived health status influenced depression symptoms. The effects of family relationships and air quality satisfaction on depression symptoms were significantly mediated by perceived health status. Therefore, perceived health status aspects should be considered when conducting targeted intervention toward depression symptoms among middle-aged and elderly adults.

Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the associations between several dimensions of self-reported satisfaction and the risk of depressive symptoms among Chinese middle-aged and older adults. Methods: The China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) conducted a nationwide cross-sectional study of middle-aged and older adults. Depressive status was evaluated using the 10-item center for epidemiological studies depression scale (CESD-10), and self-reported life, health, marital status, parent-child relationship, and air quality satisfaction were adopted using Likert 5-point evaluation methods. A generalized linear model (GLM) was applied to explore the association between satisfaction and depression risk. Results: A total of 13,978 Chinese people aged over 45 years old were included in this study, and 35.7% of the participants had depressive symptoms. The GLM analysis indicated that all dimensions of satisfaction were negatively associated with the risk of depressive symptoms. For each 1-point increase in life, health, marital status, parent-child relationship, and air quality satisfaction, the incidence of depressive symptoms decreased by 60.8% (odds ratio (OR) = 0.392; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.370, 0.414), 56.3% (OR = 0.437; 95% CI: 0.418, 0.458), 41.8% (OR = 0.582; 95% CI: 0.555, 0.610), 37.2% (OR = 0.628; 95% CI: 0.596, 0.662), and 25.6% (OR = 0.744; 95% CI: 0.711, 0.778), respectively. Conclusion: Higher satisfaction levels with life, health, marital status, parent-child relationship, and air quality are associated with a lower risk of depressive symptoms among middle-aged and older adults. Given the aging society and the increasing mental health problems of middle-aged and older adults in China, our study provides a comprehensive perspective for depression prevention and mental health improvement.

Long-term exposure to air pollution and systemic inflammation are associated with increased prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS); however, their joint effects in Chinese middle-aged and older adults is unknown. In this cross-sectional study, 11,838 residents aged 45 years and older from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) Wave 3 in 2015 were included. MetS was diagnosed using the Joint Interim Societies' definition. C-Reactive Protein (CRP) was assessed to reflect systemic inflammation. Individual exposure to air pollutants (particulate matter with a diameter ≤2.5 µm (PM2.5) or ≤ 10 µm (PM10), sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), ozone (O3), and carbon monoxide (CO)) was evaluated using satellite-based spatiotemporal models according to participant residence at county-level. Generalized linear models (GLMs) were applied to examine the association between air pollution and MetS, and the modification effects of CRP between air pollution and MetS were estimated using interaction terms of CRP and air pollutants in the GLM models. The prevalence of MetS was 32.37%. The adjusted odd ratio (OR) of MetS was 1.192 (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.116, 1.272), 1.177 (95% CI: 1.103, 1.255), 1.158 (95% CI: 1.072, 1.252), 1.303 (95% CI: 1.211,1.403), 1.107 (95% CI: 1.046, 1.171) and 1.156 (95% CI:1.083, 1.234), per inter-quartile range increase in PM2.5 (24.04 µg/m3), PM10 (39.00 µg/m3), SO2 (19.05 µg/m3), NO2 (11.28 µg/m3), O3 (9.51 µg/m3) and CO (0.46 mg/m3), respectively. CRP was also associated with increased prevalence of MetS (OR = 1.049, 95% CI: 1.035, 1.064; per 1.90 mg/L increase in CRP). Interaction analysis suggested that high CRP levels enhanced the association between air pollution exposure and MetS. Long-term exposure to air pollution is associated with increased prevalence of MetS, which might be enhanced by systemic inflammation. Given the rapidly aging society and heavy burden of MetS, measures should be taken to improve air quality and reduce systemic inflammation.
