RESUMEN

We report the first documented case of intralesional interferon administration for the palliation of carcinoid tumour metastases. This was performed under ultrasound guidance and gave a good clinical response, which correlated with tumour necrosis demonstrated by serial CT scanning.

RESUMEN

Two cases are described of patients who presented with isolated neurological deficit following penetrating injury to the upper limb. Arteriography demonstrated brachial artery false aneurysm formation in each case. There are accepted indications for emergency angiography following stab wounds including pulse deficit, vascular bruit, expanding haematoma and hypotension with no obvious cause. Indirect indicators of vascular damage include proximity of the injury to an artery with no physical signs or isolated neurological deficit. These indications do have a significant association with concurrent arterial injury and should be investigated by elective angiography if the patient is haemodynamically stable.

RESUMEN

The development of pulmonary oedema following the relief of upper airway obstruction has been reported in a wide range of conditions including post-anaesthetic laryngospasm. Radiologists should be aware of this condition as a complication of general anaesthesia.

RESUMEN

The diagnostic and complication rates of 104 percutaneous renal biopsies performed for diffuse renal disease in native kidneys were retrospectively reviewed. Biopsies were performed by one radiologist using continuous ultrasound guidance and a 14-gauge biopsy needle in an automated gun (Biopty TM, Radiplast TM, Uppsala). 103 of 104 (99%) biopsies resulted in adequate tissue for a definitive histological diagnosis which improves on previously published diagnostic rates. Four patients (3.8%) experienced transient macroscopic haematuria. There were two symptomatic peri-renal haematomas, both of whom required transfusion, and one arteriovenous fistula which was successfully embolized (total 2.9% significant complications). Our results compare favourably with results using more conventional techniques. We suggest that use of real-time ultrasound with the 14-gauge Biopty needle should be the method of choice for percutaneous renal biopsy in adults.
