RESUMEN
The soil seed bank (SSB) is one of the key mechanisms that ensure the perpetuity of forests, but how will it behave in the scenarios projected for the future climate? Faced with this main question, still little explored in seasonal tropical forests, this study evaluated the germination, ecological attributes, and functional traits of the SSB in a seasonal forest in the Atlantic Forest. Forty-eight composite samples of the SSB were collected from 12 plots, distributed across four treatments, each with 12 replicates. The samples were placed in two climate-controlled greenhouses, establishing two environments of controlled climatic conditions, both with two levels of water, as follows: Cur: current scenario without water restriction; Cur_WR: current scenario with water restriction; RCP8.5: future scenario without water restriction; RCP8.5_WR: future scenario with water restriction. The germinants were identified, and their ecological attributes and functional traits were obtained. Leaf area and biomass production, differences in abundance, richness, and diversity were evaluated, along with analysis of variance to assess the interaction between water levels and scenarios. All ecological attributes and functional traits evaluated drastically decreased in the future projection with water restriction, with this restriction being the main component influencing this response. The increased temperature in the future scenario significantly raised water consumption compared to the current scenario. However, persistent water restrictions in the future could undermine the resilience of seasonal forests, hindering seed germination in the soil. Richness and abundance were also adversely affected by water scarcity in the future scenario, revealing a low tolerance to the projected prolonged drought. These changes found in the results could alter the overall structure of seasonal forests in the future, as well as result in the loss of the regeneration potential of the SSB due to decreased seed viability and increased seedling mortality.

AIM: This study aims to explore the perceptions of feedback among undergraduate students and faculty members at a Brazilian private nursing school. BACKGROUND: Feedback plays a crucial role in the socioemotional development of learners, with its interpretation varying across different sociocultural contexts. Student evaluations frequently express dissatisfaction regarding both the quality and quantity of feedback received. Conversely, delivering feedback poses a challenge for faculty, requiring the establishment of an empathetic connection that fosters trust and credibility. Brazil, being a developing country characterized by social disparities and economic challenges, presents a unique backdrop for examining feedback dynamics. DESIGN: Qualitative research, employing Inductive Content Analysis, was used to understand feedback perceptions in Brazilian nursing education. Symbolic interactionism was adopted as methodological framework and guided data interpretation. METHODS: We carried out five virtual focus groups composed of a group of teachers (n=5) and four of students (n=34). Semi-structured interviews guided data collection. The recorded sessions were subsequently analyzed to identify key themes and codes. Symbolic interactionism was employed as a framework to derive meaning from qualitative data. RESULTS: Content analysis generated two categories that reveal the perception of teachers and students in the feedback process. The first, called "Feedback in Education: Sociocultural Influences for Students and Teachers", expresses the beliefs and interpretations of students and teachers within the shared feedback environment. The second called "Challenging resonance, transformative construction: Navigating the dualities of feedback for teachers and students", which elucidated how relational dynamics shape behaviors and attitudes, promoting the development of social skills and learning. Faculty's previous feedback experiences significantly influence their self-perception and behavior with students. As a result of the resonance of these past interactions, we recognize that the teaching self also plays a crucial role in the quality and perception of feedback. Furthermore, students construct social reality with similar beliefs and values, they believe in the learning potential generated by feedback. Our findings also corroborate that perceptions of feedback are deeply influenced by the sociocultural context and the narratives corroborate previous findings indicating that, in Brazil, honest feedback can be implicitly perceived as criticism rather than an opportunity for growth. CONCLUSIONS: Faculty members often draw on their past experiences when providing feedback, highlighting the adaptive nature of feedback interactions. Additionally, the feedback process is consistently influenced by the commitment to maintaining positive relationships with students. Students recognize the constructive dimension of feedback as a valuable tool for learning and personal growth.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Malnutrition in children and adolescents is prevalent at hospital admission and the incidence increases with length of stay. Malnourished patients have loss of muscle mass and strength, compromising their functionality. Handgrip strength (HGS) is a nutritional marker understudied in pediatrics although it is capable of detecting nutritional deprivation before changes in body composition are observed. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the association between reduced HGS at hospital admission, compromised nutritional status and worse clinical outcomes of pediatric patients. METHODS: Cohort study conducted with patients aged 6-18 years admitted to a pediatric ward. Nutritional status was assessed in the first 48 h of hospital admission using the z-score of height for age (H/A) and body mass index for age (BMI/A), percentile of mid-arm muscle circumference for age (MAMC/A) and the pediatric global subjective nutritional assessment (SGNA). HGS was measured using a digital dynamometer and considered reduced when the maximum value of three measurements was below the 5th percentile for sex and age. The clinical outcomes analyzed were length of hospital stay and frequency of readmission within 3 months after hospital discharge. RESULTS: A total of 135 patients were evaluated (median age 10.9 years, 55.6% male) and 17.8% had reduced HGS. Patients with reduced HGS had lower H/A z-score (-0.50 vs 0.22, p = 0.012) and a higher frequency of reduced MAMC when compared to those with normal HGS (8% vs 13%, p = 0.007). Reduced HGS was not associated with malnutrition (OR = 0.63; 95%CI 0.23-1.77), prolonged hospital stay (OR = 1.89; 95%CI 0.72-4.92) or readmission to hospital 3 months after hospital discharge (OR = 1.82; 95%CI 0.67-4.93), in a model adjusted for the clinical condition. CONCLUSION: Reduced HGS was not a predictor of malnutrition and clinical outcomes. However, it was associated with lower H/A Z-score and MAMC/A percentile values and can be used as a complementary measure in the nutritional status assessment of hospitalized pediatric patients.

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of a life-limiting condition of a child in the perinatal or neonatal period is a threat to parental hopes. Hope is an interactional and multidimensional construct, and in palliative care, it is a determinant of quality of life, survival, acceptance and peaceful death. OBJECTIVE: To map scientific evidence on parents' hope in perinatal and neonatal palliative care contexts. METHOD: a scoping review theoretically grounded on Dufault and Martocchio's Framework, following the Joanna Briggs Institute methodological recommendations. Searches were performed until May 2023 in the MEDLINE, CINAHL and PsycINFO databases. The searches returned 1341 studies. RESULTS: Eligible papers included 27 studies, most of which were carried out in the United States under a phenomenological or literature review approach. The centrality of women's perspectives in the context of pregnancy and perinatal palliative care was identified. The parental hope experience is articulated in dealing with the uncertainty of information and diagnosis, an approach to which interaction with health professionals is a determinant and potentially distressful element. Hope was identified as one of the determinants of coping and, consequently, linked to autonomy and parenthood. Cognitive and affiliative dimensions were the hope dimensions that predominated in the results, which corresponded to the parents' ability to formulate realistic goals and meaningful interpersonal relationships, respectively. CONCLUSION: Hope is a force capable of guiding parents along the path of uncertainties experienced through the diagnosis of a condition that compromises their child's life. Health professionals can manage the family's hope by establishing sensitive therapeutic relationships that focus on the dimension of hope. The need for advanced research and intervention in parental and family hope are some of the points made in this study. PROTOCOL REGISTRATION: https://osf.io/u9xr5/ .

OBJECTIVES: to present a theoretical model for the interactional context of health professionals and families of children and adolescents under palliative care. METHODS: qualitative study based on the theoretical frameworks of Grounded Theory and Symbolic Interactionism. Ten palliative care professionals took part in this study through semi-structured interviews employing snowball technique from 2020 to 2021. RESULTS: the comparative data analysis resulted in the theoretical model "Searching for human connection to transcend symbolisms in pediatric palliative care". It reveals symbolic elements that substantiate the construction of a collaborative context integrating two phenomena: "Overcoming boundaries and intertwining paths" and "Embracing suffering to weave meaningful experiences". Symbolisms in palliative care guide the behavior of families and professionals, which makes them the key factor to be managed. FINAL CONSIDERATIONS: symbolisms and suffering continually integrate the interactional experience of professionals. Empathy and compassion are fundamental elements to enable their connection with families.

PURPOSE: This study aims to estimate the overall SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence and evaluate the accuracy of an antibody rapid test compared to a reference serological assay during a COVID-19 outbreak in a prison complex housing over 13,000 prisoners in Brasília. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: The authors obtained a randomized, stratified representative sample of each prison unit and conducted a repeated serosurvey among prisoners between June and July 2020, using a lateral-flow immunochromatographic assay (LFIA). Samples were also retested using a chemiluminescence enzyme immunoassay (CLIA) to compare SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence and 21-days incidence, as well as to estimate the overall infection fatality rate (IFR) and determine the diagnostic accuracy of the LFIA test. FINDINGS: This study identified 485 eligible individuals and enrolled 460 participants. Baseline and 21-days follow-up seroprevalence were estimated at 52.0% (95% CI 44.9-59.0) and 56.7% (95% CI 48.2-65.3) with LFIA; and 80.7% (95% CI 74.1-87.3) and 81.1% (95% CI 74.4-87.8) with CLIA, with an overall IFR of 0.02%. There were 78.2% (95% CI 66.7-89.7) symptomatic individuals among the positive cases. Sensitivity and specificity of LFIA were estimated at 43.4% and 83.3% for IgM; 46.5% and 91.5% for IgG; and 59.1% and 77.3% for combined tests. ORIGINALITY/VALUE: The authors found high seroprevalence of anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies within the prison complex. The occurrence of asymptomatic infection highlights the importance of periodic mass testing in addition to case-finding of symptomatic individuals; however, the field performance of LFIA tests should be validated. This study recommends that vaccination strategies consider the inclusion of prisoners and prison staff in priority groups.

RESUMEN
Liming contributes to the alleviation of acidity in highly weathered soils. For sugarcane, the use of green harvest methods and new soil tillage systems requires an adjustment of lime application rates. In the present study, the effects of different lime rates and tillage systems on sugarcane performance and soil chemical fertility parameters were assessed. Three experiments were conducted in two locations between April 2015 and October 2019. The study design was a randomized block field study with four replicates. Four lime rates were applied once at sugarcane establishments in each soil tillage system and location: no liming (control); lime recommended rate (LRR); two times LRR (2× LRR); and three times LRR (3× LRR). The three soil tillage systems were conventional (CT), deep-strip (DT), and modified deep-strip tillage (MDT). Soil chemical fertility, leaf nutrient concentrations, and sugarcane yield components were analyzed, and correlations were identified by principal component analysis (PCA). The soil acidity was adequately alleviated in all tillage systems. Increasing the lime rate improved the lime distribution and soil fertility parameters. Applying lime at rates higher than LRR improved stalk and sugar yields, longevity, agronomic efficiency index (AEI), and correlated with a longer residual effect of liming, mainly in the last ratoon.
RESUMEN
Abstract Background: The implementation of Telecardiology in primary care in the city of Porto Alegre, Brazil, is a viable and promising strategy. It would decrease the distance between patient and specialized professional services by reducing unnecessary referrals and improving the quality of primary care and satisfaction of patients and health professionals. Objective: To implement a Telecardiology service and assess user satisfaction using the CARDIOSATIS scale. Methods: This was a pilot study developed by a partnership between the Institute of Cardiology and the Telehealth Center of Rio Grande do Sul. The study was carried out at Eri Flores-Vila Vargas health center in the city of Porto Alegre, from May to October 2019, and included 21 patients attending the health center. The descriptive analysis of data was performed using the SPSS program (Statistical Package for the Sciences) version 23. Data normality was checked using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. Statistical significance was set at 10%. Results: Mean age of participants was 43.8 ± 16.1 years. The most common risk factors in the sample were physical inactivity (81%) and smoking (43%). Most patients had normal electrocardiogram (ECG) readings. The time elapsed from the performance of the ECG test, transmission of the ECG traces to Telehealth, and return of the final ECG report to the health center was 0-7 days. The CARDIOSATIS scale revealed a high prevalence of "very satisfied" users for the general satisfaction domain, and only 14.3% of patients were dissatisfied with their health. Conclusions: Telecardiology reduced the distance between patient and the specialized professional, with a high level of patient and health professional satisfaction. Our study can serve as a basis for the implementation of a telecardiology network in the city of Porto Alegre in the future.

Iron deficiency anemia affects different populations worldwide, and in Brazil it is one of the principal childhood nutritional deficiencies. Different strategies have been proposed by international agencies and the Brazilian Ministry of Health for its prevention. The study aimed to analyze the ideas in dispute, expressed in official documents and narratives by health and education workers concerning the use of nutritional supplementation and/or fortification as a measure in schools to prevent anemia. The study was based on government documents and semi-structured interviews with workers in municipalities that implemented the school food fortification strategy (NutriSUS) in the state of Rio de Janeiro. The ideas expressed in the government documents highlight the efficiency of home supplementation and fortification for prevention of anemia, based on scientific studies and adjusted to the objectives of the public policies set out in them. Some ideas in the workers' narratives are critical of the need for this type of intervention, others they favor them, indicating controversies in the process of local operationalization of federal policies. Tensions were observed in the concepts of promotion, prevention, and treatment through NutriSUS, dosage, and form of administration. Criticisms of supplementation highlight healthy eating practices as the best strategy. Medicalization rather than health promotion measures can strain the pedagogical perspective in schools and produce contradictory ideas on the best strategies for the promotion of healthy eating.

The study analyzed and compared the types of food sold in the surroundings of 30 private and 26 public elementary schools in the city of Niterói, Rio de Janeiro. Data were collected by audit using a checklist instrument to characterize establishments (formal or informal) and identify the types of food and beverages sold, which were classified by processing level (fresh, processed, and ultraprocessed). Mann-Whitney statistical tests were used to verify the difference in the type of trade outlets d the categories of food sold between schools. The Kruskal-Wallis test was used to verify the difference in the amount of food traded between the categories. The amount of ultraprocessed food in the surroundings of public and private schools was statistically higher (p=0.0001) than the other categories. Some culinary preparations had a high rate of energy contribution from ultraprocessed foods (above 15%). There was no statistically significant difference (p = 0.478) in the categories of food sold between public and private schools. The sale of ultraprocessed products predominates around public and private schools, favoring the exposure of children to an environment that encourages the consumption of these products.

Qualitative Evaluation of Menu Preparations (QEMP) was also used and the results were classified from very satisfactory to very unsatisfactory. Most of the nutritional averages were above the recommendations and the absence of fresh vegetable foods was also observed in most of the menus. The results demonstrated the importance of analyzing school menus in order to define strategies for their adaptation towards the recommendations and guidelines of the NSFP.
This study aimed to verify whether university students have knowledge about the ways of HIV/AIDS transmission and the adoption of prevention practices and if there is an association with income. The survey included 682 students, who answered a questionnaire. Ten questions about the ways of transmission, the number of correct answers and the possible association with family income were analyzed. In the sample, women and income below five minimum wages predominated. Six hundred and eight students (89%) answered eight or more questions about the ways in which the virus was transmitted. Those with a family income of less than five minimum wages had a higher percentage of correct answers in all questions about transmission. The majority has good knowledge regarding transmission, but does not use condoms in all sexual relations, and there is greater knowledge among students with lower income.
RESUMEN
OBJECTIVES: To describe the first outbreak of Candida auris in Brazil, including epidemiological, clinical and microbiological data. METHODS: After the first Candida auris-colonised patient was diagnosed in a COVID-19 ICU at a hospital in Salvador, Brazil, a multidisciplinary team conducted a local C. auris prevalence investigation. Screening cultures for C. auris were collected from patients, healthcare workers and inanimate surfaces. Risk factors for C. auris colonisation were evaluated, and the fungemia episodes that occurred after the investigation were also analysed and described. Antifungal susceptibility of the C. auris isolates was determined, and they were genotyped with microsatellite analysis. RESULTS: Among body swabs collected from 47 patients, eight (n = 8/47, 17%) samples from the axillae were positive for C. auris. Among samples collected from inanimate surfaces, digital thermometers had the highest rate of positive cultures (n = 8/47, 17%). Antifungal susceptibility testing showed MICs of 0.5 to 1 mg/L for AMB, 0.03 to 0.06 mg/L for voriconazole, 2 to 4 mg/L for fluconazole and 0.03 to 0.06 mg/L for anidulafungin. Microsatellite analysis revealed that all C. auris isolates belong to the South Asian clade (Clade I) and had different genotypes. In multivariate analysis, having a colonised digital thermometer was the only independent risk factor associated with C. auris colonisation. Three episodes of C. auris fungemia occurred after the investigation, with 30-day attributable mortality of 33.3%. CONCLUSIONS: Emergence of C. auris in Salvador, Brazil, may be related to local C. auris clade I closely related genotypes. Contaminated axillary monitoring thermometers may facilitate the dissemination of C. auris reinforcing the concept that these reusable devices should be carefully cleaned with an effective disinfectant or replaced by other temperature monitoring methods.
