RESUMEN

PURPOSE: Bisphosphonates are commonly used drugs in pediatric patients in the treatment of osteoporotic diseases and various types of cancers. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of pamidronate administration on mandibular growth and tooth eruption in new born rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty Sprague Dawley rats were included in the study and divided into four groups as; 14th day pamidronate group, 30th day pamidronate group, 14th day control group and 30th day control group. Pamidronate groups were daily injected with 1.25 µg/g pamidronate disodium subcutaneously whereas control groups were injected with sterile saline. Eruption levels of lower incisor and molar teeth were assessed macroscopically. Mandibular growth was assessed by measuring reference points in cone beam tomography. Histological and histomorphometric examinations were performed under light microscope to evaluate tooth morphology and number of osteoclasts. RESULTS: Retardation in mandibular growth, decrease in number of osteoclasts, delay in tooth eruption, degeneration in both tooth morphology and structure were observed in the pamidronate groups compared to control groups. CONCLUSION: Pamidronate administration during growth and development stage may adversely affect tooth eruption and mandibular growth in new born rats.

RESUMEN

Fibrous Dysplasia (FD) is a developmental disorder of bone that can affect one bone (monostotic type) or multiple bones (polyostotic type). The disease can be associated with hyperpigmentation and endocrinological disorders. It is usually observed in adolescents and young adults and comprises 7% of benign bone tumors. It has a predilection for long bones as well as the craniofacial skeleton. The etiology of FD is not clear but genetic predisposition is suspected. The diagnosis is based on radiological and histopathological examination. There are different treatment approaches including monitoring, medical treatment or surgery. In this article, we present a case of monostotic mandibular fibrous dysplasia of the mandible with clinical, radiographic and histopathological features.

RESUMEN

Miniplates have been used during the last decade to facilitate stability between bony fragments in the maxillofacial region and are currently the preferred surgical method for the fixation of fractures and osteotomies. The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the biomechanical behaviors of six different types of miniplates used to reconstruct mandibular body fractures: Group 1 (straight, 2 holes, 12.0 mm spacing), Group 2 (straight, 4 holes, 9.0 spacing), Group 3 (straight, 6 holes, 9.0 mm spacing), Group 4 (L-shaped, 4 holes, 9.0 mm spacing, right hand plate), Group 5 (Y-shaped, 5 holes, 12.0 mm spacing), and Group 6 (double Y-shaped, 6 holes, 9.0 mm spacing). Thirty bovine hemimandibles and a custom-made 3-point biomechanical test frame mounted on a Shimadzu universal test machine were used to evaluate the six different miniplate systems. Results revealed that Group 1 (straight, 2 holes, 12.0 mm spacing) and Group 4 (9.0 mm spacing, right hand plate) had the lowest biomechanical stability, whereas Group 6 (6 holes, 9.0 mm spacing) had the highest biomechanical stability. Group 6 also provided statistically greater resistance to displacement than Group 1 and Group 4.

RESUMEN

Huntington's disease is a hereditary, progressive, neuro-degenerative disorder characterised by increasingly severe motor impairment, cognitive decline and behavioural manifestations leading to functional disability. Dyskinesia and hyperkinesia of the tongue and the peri-oral musculature make it impossible for the patient to wear a conventional complete denture, despite an adequate alveolar ridge. The present paper reports on a patient with Huntington's disease who was rehabilitated with a mandibular overdenture supported by two endosteal implants. One year follow-up examination showed that the prosthesis was stable and there was considerable improvement in the patient's masticatory function.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: The aim was to investigate heat shock protein 60 (HSP60) expression in oral ulcerations of Behçet's disease (BD). STUDY DESIGN: Biopsy specimens were obtained from patients with BD (n = 11), recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) (n = 11), oral lichen planus (OLP) (n = 11) and healthy individuals (HI) (n = 11). Eight samples in BD and RAS groups were evaluable. All groups were analyzed by biotin streptavidin-aminoethylcarbazole using monoclonal mouse antibodies to HSP60 Ab-1 (clone LK1). RESULTS: Immunostaining indicative of HSP60 expression in BD and RAS were significantly higher than HI. No significant difference was found between BD and OLP except in the suprabasal layer of epithelium. CONCLUSIONS: Altered expression of HSP60 was found in ulcerative lesions of BD and RAS suggesting that HSP60 has an association with the etiology or chronicity of these inflammatory lesions.
