RESUMEN

Lysogeny has been first established in strains of parahemolytic vibrios of serovar O4:K12. Moderate phages belonged to morphological group IV by home A. S. Tikhonenko's classification and were presented by one serological type. No correlation has been revealed between sensitivity to moderate phages of parahemolytic vibrios and specificity of "O"- or "K"-serotypes.

RESUMEN

The range of the lytic activity of 46 phages of parahemolytic vibrios isolated from lysogenic strains, sea water samples, crabs and mussels has been studied. The phages are represented by virions belonging to morphological groups II, IV, V according to the phage classification currently used in Russia and to different serological groups. No relationship between the sensitivity of vibrio strains to the phages under study and the specificity of serotypes O and K has been established. The preparation of diagnostic phage [see text] suitable for the identification of 82% of strains of parahemolytic vibrios has been proposed.

RESUMEN

The bacteriophage designated RD2 has been isolated from the sewage in Rostov-on-Don city and studied. The morphology of bacteriophage particles and the biological properties of the bacteriophage make it related to the plague bacteriophage isolated by D'Errel. The molecular masses of the compared bacteriophages are almost identical being 26.4 +/- 0.4 Md for RD2 and 24.7 +/- 0.2 Md for D'Errel bacteriophage. The DNAs of the bacteriophages share 80% of homology and possess 15 nonhomologous regions scattered along the genomes. The phages are serologically related. The DNAs of both bacteriophages give the similar pattern of hydrolysis by restriction endonuclease EcoRV, but have the different sensitivity to many other restriction endonucleases. The protein specter of bacteriophage RD2 contains 18 polypeptides (11 minor ones), while the one of D'Errel bacteriophage contains 7 polypeptides similar in molecular mass with the polypeptides of RD2. The bacteriophage RD2 cannot be considered one of the plague causative agents of bacteriophages since the region where it has been isolated has a long epidemiological and epizootical record of absence of plague.

RESUMEN

Electron microscopy and optic diffraction methods were used to determine the main parameters of the morpho-structural organization of cholera phages 493 and 7227. The shape of phage capsids was established, the spiral type of symmetry of phage processes revealed, their adsorption apparatuses described, the number of morphological subunits comprising capsids and process envelopes, and some other parameters determined. It is assumed that the phages under study are new varieties of bacteriophages belonging to the fifth morphological group (according to the classification of A.S. Tikhonenko).

RESUMEN

Molecular masses of cholera bacteriophages 493, 7226 and Eltor II were defined by electron microscopic technique. DNA of these bacteriophages was digested by the restriction endonucleases PstI, BglI, MluI and SalI. The number and molecular masses of the obtained restricts were identified. The physical map of bacteriophage 493 was constructed using three restriction endonucleases. The obtained data can be used for classification and molecular biology research of cholera bacteriophages.

RESUMEN

Electron microscopy methods were used to determine the main parameters of the structural organization of cholera "C" phage. The particles of the phage were found to consist of a capsid of icosahedral shape and a thin noncontractile process. The capsid with the triangulation number 7 consists of 72 morphological subunits and contains DNA with the molecular weight of (68.16 +/- 1.63) x 10(6) daltons. The process of the phage consists of 216 morphological subunits and ends with a peculiar adsorption apparatus including a distal filament and three fibrils with knobs at the ends.

RESUMEN

The methods of electron microscopy and optic difraction were used to determine the main parameters of the structural organization of cholera bacteriophage of serotype II. The virions of the phage under study were found to consist of a capsid of icosahedral shape and 77.4 X 66.1 nm in size, formed of 252 morphological subunits and having the cavity volume of 76.3 X 10(3) nm3. A process of 94.8 nm in length adheres to the capsid, with a shell capable of contractions, of 85.6 nm in length, 20.6 nm in width, containing 60 morphological subunits. The shell covers the central core of 8.9 nm in diameter. The optic difraction revealed the helical type of symmetry of the process structure and its main parameters.
