RESUMEN

In this study, we evaluated variation in vegetative and reproductive phenological events of four phylogenetically related plant species subjected to a seasonal environment. To this aim, we sampled 15 individuals of each plant species every fortnight for one year, between January and December of 2017. To assess when a given phenophase occurred more intensely in the population, the Fournier intensity index was used and the synchrony of individuals of the sample in a given phenological event was estimated using the activity index. The Rayleigh (Z) test was used to determine whether the phenological events have seasonal distribution. The relationship of abiotic factors (photoperiod, precipitation, relative humidity and temperature) with the intensity of phenophases was evaluated for each plant species using generalized linear models (GLMs). The phenophases of all plants showed a seasonal distribution pattern, as well as variation in synchrony of phenophases and specific sets of abiotic factors significantly influenced their phenophases. New leaves, for example, were produced throughout the seasons, with intense leaf fall in the dry season. Flowering periods, on the other hand, did not overlap. Indeed, species exhibited sequential flowering and asynchronous flowering among individuals. Our results suggest that the phenological patterns of four sympatric plant species are directly linked to climatic variables, but different abiotic factors affected different phenophases.

Sugarcane production is strongly influenced by drought, which is a limiting factor for agricultural productivity in the world. In this study, the gene expression profiles obtained by de novo assembly of the leaf transcriptome of two sugarcane cultivars that differ in their physiological response to water deficit were evaluated by the RNA-Seq method: drought-tolerant cultivar (SP81-3250) and drought-sensitive cultivar (RB855453). For this purpose, plants were grown in a greenhouse for 60 days and were then submitted to three treatments: control (-0.01 to -0.015 MPa), moderate water deficit (-0.05 to -0.055 MPa), and severe water deficit (-0.075 to -0.08 MPa). The plants were evaluated 30, 60, and 90 days after the beginning of treatment. Sequencing on an Illumina platform (RNA-Seq) generated more than one billion sequences, resulting in 177,509 and 185,153 transcripts for the tolerant and sensitive cultivar, respectively. These transcripts were aligned with sequences from Saccharum spp, Sorghum bicolor, Miscanthus giganteus, and Arabidopsis thaliana available in public databases. The differentially expressed genes detected during the prolonged period of water deficit permit to increase our understanding of the molecular patterns involved in the physiological response of the two cultivars. The tolerant cultivar differentially expressed a larger number of genes at 90 days, while in the sensitive cultivar the number of differentially expressed genes was higher in 30 days. Both cultivars perceived the lack of water, but the tolerant cultivar responded more slowly than the sensitive cultivar. The latter requires rapid activation of different water-deficit stress response mechanisms for its survival. This rapid activation of metabolic pathways in response to water stress does not appear to be the key mechanism of drought tolerance in sugarcane. There is still much to clarify on the molecular and physiological pattern of plants in response to drought.

RESUMEN

In a previous study we showed that rats chronically treated with corticosterone (CORT) display anxiogenic behavior, evidenced by facilitation of avoidance responses in the elevated T-maze (ETM) model of anxiety. Treatment with the tricyclic antidepressant imipramine significantly reversed the anxiogenic effects of CORT, while inhibiting ETM escape, a response related to panic disorder. To better understand the neurobiological mechanisms underlying these behavioral effects, analysis of c-fos protein immunoreactivity (fos-ir) was used here to map areas activated by chronic CORT (200 mg pellets, 21-day release) and imipramine (15 mg/kg, IP) administration. We also evaluated the number of cells expressing the neurogenesis marker doublecortin (DCX) in the hippocampus and measured plasma CORT levels on the 21st day of treatment. Results showed that CORT increased fos-ir in the ventrolateral septum, medial amygdala and paraventricular hypothalamic nucleus and decreased fos-ir in the lateral periaqueductal gray. Imipramine, on the other hand, increased fos-ir in the medial amygdala and decreased fos-ir in the anterior hypothalamus. CORT also decreased the number of DCX-positive cells in the ventral and dorsal hippocampus, an effect antagonized by imipramine. CORT levels were significantly higher after treatment. These data suggest that the behavioral effects of CORT and imipramine are mediated through specific, at times overlapping, neuronal circuits, which might be of relevance to a better understanding of the physiopathology of generalized anxiety and panic disorder.

RESUMEN

It is known that chronic high levels of corticosterone (CORT) enhance aversive responses such as avoidance and contextual freezing. In contrast, chronic CORT does not alter defensive behavior induced by the exposure to a predator odor. Since different defense-related responses have been associated with specific anxiety disorders found in clinical settings, the observation that chronic CORT alters some defensive behaviors but not others might be relevant to the understanding of the neurobiology of anxiety. In the present study, we investigated the effects of chronic CORT administration (through surgical implantation of a 21-day release 200 mg pellet) on avoidance acquisition and escape expression by male Wistar rats (200 g in weight at the beginning of the experiments, N = 6-10/group) tested in the elevated T-maze (ETM). These defensive behaviors have been associated with generalized anxiety and panic disorder, respectively. Since the tricyclic antidepressant imipramine is successfully used to treat both conditions, the effects of combined treatment with chronic imipramine (15 mg, ip) and CORT were also investigated. Results showed that chronic CORT facilitated avoidance performance, an anxiogenic-like effect (P < 0.05), without changing escape responses. Imipramine significantly reversed the anxiogenic effect of CORT (P < 0.05), although the drug did not exhibit anxiolytic effects by itself. Confirming previous observations, imipramine inhibited escape responses, a panicolytic-like effect. Unlike chronic CORT, imipramine also decreased locomotor activity in an open field. These data suggest that chronic CORT specifically altered ETM avoidance, a fact that should be relevant to a better understanding of the physiopathology of generalized anxiety and panic disorder.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Adolescent obesity is associated with an increased risk of adult obesity and subsequent cardiovascular diseases. The present study aimed to assess the effect of weight loss after 6-month lifestyle intervention in obese adolescents on biomarkers of endothelial activation and fibrinolytic system. METHODS: Eighty-five obese adolescents aged 10 to 16 years were assigned to a 6-month lifestyle intervention and 61 completed the programme. We examined the effect of the intervention on adhesion molecules (selectin E, soluble intercellular adhesion molecule 1 and soluble vascular adhesion molecule 1) and fibrinolytic parameters [plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) and fibrinogen]. Thirty-six lean adolescents were studied only at baseline as a comparison group. RESULTS: Compared with lean participants, obese adolescents at baseline demonstrated significantly higher levels of triglycerides, glucose, insulin, homeostasis model assessment, soluble intercellular adhesion molecule 1, PAI-1 and fibrinogen. After 6-month lifestyle intervention, those obese adolescents with decreased standard deviation score-body mass index (SDS-BMI) displayed significant decreases in insulin (19.2 ± 11.2 vs. 26.8 ± 13.2 mU/L, P≤ 0.01), homeostasis model assessment (4.24 ± 3.19 vs. 6.58 ± 4.08, P≤ 0.01), selectin E (100.2 ± 60.9 vs. 116.0 ± 69.0 ng/mL, P≤ 0.01) and PAI-1 (39.6 ± 38.0 vs. 51.8 ± 25.6 ng/mL, P≤ 0.05) with respect to the baseline levels. No changes in these parameters were observed in the obese adolescents with stable or increased SDS-BMI. The changes of triglycerides after intervention in subgroup with decreased SDS-BMI were significantly greater than those in subgroup with stable SDS-BMI. CONCLUSIONS: The present study demonstrated increased endothelial activation and impairment of the fibrinolytic system in early life, which is in part reversible by a 6-month lifestyle intervention.

RESUMEN

Zoledronic acid is effective for osteoporosis at a single annual intravenous dose. It usually causes few adverse effects; the most common are related to acute phase reactions. We reported the case of a 64-year-old woman who presented flare-up of hand osteoarthritis after zoledronic acid infusions. Despite the fact that arthralgia is a common side effect of intravenous bisphosphonates, development of inflammatory signs in osteoarthritic joints is a rare event. We hypothesized that this side effect is caused by a release of cytokines secondary to activation of gamma-delta T lymphocytes.

RESUMEN

Abdominal desmoplastic small round-cell tumor (DSRCT) is a rare and aggressive neoplasm characterized by a consistent histological appearance, a unique immunohistochemicalprofile, and a specific chromosomal translocation. Fewer than 200 cases have been reported in the literature. Most tumors afflicts mainly adolescent or young adult males. They present as bulky abdominal or pelvic masses that diffusely spread along the peritoneal surface. We report one case of intra-abdominal desmoplastic small round-cell tumor in a 22 year old man. Imaging and histopathologic findings are described. CT images showed a bulky pelvic mass with peritoneal involvement. Immunohistochemically, the tumor showed positivity for desmin, vimentin, and specific CAM 5.2 antigen. The differential diagnosis is discussed in relation to radiological findings, and a review of the literature data is performed.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of several drug combinations (atropine, xylazine, romifidine, methotrimeprazine, midazolam, or fentanyl) with ketamine for short term anesthesia in cats. Twelve cats were anesthetized 6 times by using a cross-over Latin square protocol: methotrimeprazine was combined with midazolam, ketamine, and fentanyl; midazolam and ketamine; romifidine and ketamine; and xylazine and ketamine. Atropine was combined with romifidine and ketamine, and xylazine and ketamine. Temperature, heart rate, and respiratory rate decreased in all groups. Apnea occurred in 1 cat treated with methotrimeprazine, romifidine, and ketamine, suggesting that ventilatory support may be necessary when this protocol is used. Emesis occurred in some cats treated with alpha 2-adrenoceptor agonists, and this side effect should be considered when these drugs are used.

RESUMEN

A high incidence rate of Malaria is observed at Bolívar state (Venezuela) and, beside classic acute symptomatology, we have observed gastric symptoms like epigastralgia, anorexia, nausea and vomits. The scope of this study is to establish changes of gastric mucosa related to Plasmodium infection, using macro and microscopic technics. One hundred both sex patients with Malaria diagnosis done with thick drop technic and gastric symptomatology were studied in our department from March 1990 to February 1991. The esophagus, stomach and duodenum of all patients were evaluated with upper digestive tract endoscopy and still photographs, and biopsies of fundus, body and antrum were taken, fixed in 10% formaldehyde and stained with hematoxylin-eosine method. P. falciparum was found in 52 cases, P. vivax in 39 and 9 infected with both, most of patients complained of shivering fever, epigastralgia (76%), nausea and vomits (72%), tartness (25%) and burning pain (21%). Mucosal edema and congestion (gastritis) were the endoscopic findings in 88% of cases, usually located at antrum (67%) and fundus (33%). The microscopic findings were: mucosal edema (90%), superficial bleeding (87%), microthrombosis (60%), gastric atrophy (40%) and intestinal metaplasia (8%). Acute gastric symptomatology we have observed in patients with acute malaria my be due to microthrombosis and arteriolar occlusion, leading to ischemic changes and mucosal edema. These pathophysiological changes explain most of upper digestive tract symptoms in acute malaria, particularly when agent is P. falciparum. We have not found related papers in bibliography.

RESUMEN

The prevalence of anemophilus fungi was studied in three small towns located at the Brazilian border with Colombia and Venezuela (a hot and humid zone) during the month of July. On a single collection carried out in different spots, colonies were cultivated which could be attributed to eighteen different species of anemophilus fungi with predominance of Mucor (64%), Candida (55%), Rhodotorula (38%) and Penicillum (38%). The alternaria species, a very potent airbone allergen, was found only in one of the three collection spots with high prevalence of respiratory tract allergies.
