RESUMEN

Most central bony lesions appearing in a periapical location are inflammatory in nature secondary to pulpal degeneration. However, cysts, tumors, and other diseases may be easily confused with such endodontic lesions. Four clinical cases are presented, illustrating the importance of thorough evaluation and the role of biopsy in appropriate cases.

RESUMEN

A case of multiosseous osteosarcoma in a 15-year-old girl is presented. Neoplastic foci were initially diagnosed in the right ilium and left mandible. The clinical course was complicated by pregnancy and chemotherapeutic side effects. Postmortem examination revealed multiple tumor emboli in the lungs. The literature concerning metastatic and multicentric origins of multiosseous osteosarcomas is reviewed. The case presented probably represents mandibular metastasis from the ilium.

RESUMEN

The features of two cases of central odontogenic fibroma are presented and the literature is reviewed. Controversial issues surrounding this neoplasm are discussed. The cases presented here include the oldest reported patient with this neoplasm and the first instance of its occurrence at a maxillary site. Treatment and follow-up information emphasize the benign nature and slow growth of these lesions.

RESUMEN

Surgical excision with curettage of the underlying bone is the accepted method of treatment for the peripheral giant cell granuloma. The lesions may tend to recur if careful, complete excision of the lesional base is not accomplished. In the past, adjacent teeth were extracted in the belief that the lesion possessed a potential for more aggressive growth, but this practice has been abandoned as the true nature of the lesion has become apparent. Although the occurrence is probably uncommon, an association between the peripheral giant cell granuloma and hyperparathyroidism has been reported by some authors, who recommend suitable laboratory tests (serum calcium, alklaine phosphatase, and phosphorus) to rule out this possibility in all patients with a peripheral giant cell granuloma.
