RESUMEN

The LysR-type transcriptional regulators (LTTRs) are DNA-binding proteins present in bacteria, archaea, and in algae. Knowledge about their distribution, abundance, evolution, structural organization, transcriptional regulation, fundamental roles in free life, pathogenesis, and bacteria-plant interaction has been generated. This review focuses on these aspects and provides a current picture of LTTR biology.

RESUMEN

Benzoquinones are usually present in arthropod defence exudates. Here, we describe the chemical profiles of 12 harvestman species belonging to the neotropical family Gonyleptidae. Nine of the studied species produced benzoquinones, while three produced alkyl phenols. Two benzoquinones and one phenol exhibited biological activity against bacteria and fungi. We also studied the biosynthesis of 2-ethyl-1,4-benzoquinone by feeding Magnispina neptunus individuals with ¹³C-labelled precursors; the benzoquinones were biosynthesised through a polyketide pathway using acetate and propionate building blocks.

It is well known that the suffering of an illness can affect not only the patient, but also every person that relates intimately to him. We attempted the verification of this statement by applying Hamilton tests to 58 parents of patients which were hospitalized in the several pediatric oncology-specialized health care centers in Caracas. The outcome was a predominance of depression in 90% of the parents; in addition, observed how the different degrees of depression could fluctuate according to certain factors like: Development time of the illness and the hospital’s environment. It is necessary to provide specialized psychological care to the relatives or any companions of the patients hospitalized in health care centers

RESUMEN

The metastases of prostate cancer shows the regional lymphatic dissemination, being the cervical lymphatic metastases to infrequent and little reported in Literature. In the present work we contributed a new observation of this organization. We displayed a clinical case with lateral mass cervical left, abdominal pain and diarrheic. When making biopsy of cervical adenopathy reported adenocarcinoma prostate metastases. Colonoscopy with biopsy was made whose results were carcinoma little differentiated infiltrated necrotic center to rectum. The complementary studies demonstrated bilateral aortic adenopathys without injuries in thorax. Within the diagnosis differential of the cervical adenopathys in neck in adult men it must consider the prostate carcinoma, because in an early diagnosis and adapting treatment it can prolong the survive.

RESUMEN

Entomological surveys were conducted in five rural communities (138 domiciliary units [DUs]) in the southern Andes of Ecuador. Adobe walls and ceramic tile roofs were predominant construction materials. A 35% house infestation rate with Panstrongylus chinai (Del Ponte, 1929) (0.7%), Panstrongylus rufotuberculatus (Champion, 1899) (0.7%), Rhodnius ecuadoriensis (Lent & León, 1958) (27%), and/or Triatoma carrioni (Larrousse, 1926) (7%) was found. Adults and nymphs of R. ecuadoriensis and T. carrioni were found in intradomiciliary and peridomiciliary areas. Breeding triatomine colonies were present in 85% of infested DUs, and the average insect crowding was 52+/-113 triatomine bugs per infested house. T. cruzi-like organisms were found by microscopic examination in the feces or hindgut but not the salivary glands of 4% of examined R. ecuadoriensis and 12% T. carrioni. Serological tests detected a general anti-T. cruzi antibody seroprevalence of 3.9% (n = 1136). Only 2% of individuals had heard of Chagas disease, and although triatomines were reported as a major nuisance by the population they were not considered vectors of disease. Additional baseline field research is needed for the design and implementation of a Chagas disease control program in the region.

RESUMEN

offhough the concept of domain merging and shuffling as a major force in protein evolution is well established, it has been difficult to demonstrate how domains coadapt. Here we show evidence of coevolution of the Sinorhizobium meliloti NifA (SmNifA) domains. We found that, because of the lack of a conserved glycine in its DNA-binding domain, this transactivator protein interacts weakly with the enhancers. This defect, however, was compensated by evolving a highly efficient activation domain that, contrasting to Bradyrhizobium japonicum NifA (BjNifA), can activate in trans. To explore paths that lead to this enhanced activity, we mutagenized BjNifA. After three cycles of mutagenesis and selection, a highly active derivative was obtained. Strikingly, all mutations changed to amino acids already present in SmNifA. Our artificial process thus recreated the natural evolution followed by this protein and suggests that NifA is trapped in a restricted sequence space with very limited solutions for higher activity by point mutation.

RESUMEN

1022 children under five years of ago from a typical urban-marginal community in the coast of Peru were evaluated using Antropometry in a cross sectional study for nutritional assessment. Standards of weight for age, height for age and wight for height from USNCHS aproved by WHO were used. Weight for age in 96 percent of under six months children was over -2SD of standard, tending to higher values: 31 percent over + aSD, 60 percent o between ± 1SD and 5 percent between -2 and -1SD. In 93 percent of 6 to 11 months children it was over -2SD but tending to lower values: 26 percent bertween -2 and -1SD, 57 percent between ± 1SD and just 11 percent over 1SD. In children over one year weight for age showed like latter distribution. Height for age in 88 percent of under six months infants was higher than -1SD but in older, percentages of those between ±1SD failed progresively meressing those with height lower than -1SD and -2SD: 25 percent of those between 1 to 2 years had height for age under -2SD. Rate weight/height was under -2SD scarcely in 0.4 percent of all children assessed. Results appoint for a high prevalence of chronic marginal malnutrition in infant people studied and it is not detectable applying actual rules for infant nutritional assessment used in our country.
