RESUMEN

Residual chlorine from widespread disinfection processes forms byproducts in water that are harmful to humans and ecosystems. Portable sensors are essential tools for the on-site monitoring of residual chlorine in environmental samples. Here, an inexpensive colorimetric sensor was developed by grafting via amidation the chromogen orthotolidine (OTO) to the surface of a TEMPO-oxidized cellulose filter paper (O-TOFP). A thorough characterization of the sensor strip demonstrated that it was highly stable and that it could be stored for a long period before usage. O-TOFP had a fast response time of 30 s, was highly selective for residual chlorine ions (ClO-) with an accuracy of at least 95 %, and exhibited an excellent limit of detection of only 0.045 mg/L when combined with smartphone image acquisition. With its many positive features, the easy-to-use and robust O-TOFP sensor described here could become a useful tool for the determination of residual chlorine in different water samples.

RESUMEN

Emergomycosis is a dimorphic fungal disease that is typically disseminated and fatal among immunocompromised individuals. In the case report, we presented a patient with intermittent fever, night sweats, coughing and phlegm. Chest computed tomography revealed multiple soft-tissue nodules in both lungs. Routine pathological and microbiological tests did not confirm the diagnosis. Therefore, we conducted pathogen detection using metagenomic next-generation sequencing in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid and identified the pulmonary infection caused by Emergomyces orientalis (Es. orientalis). During the antifungal treatment, the patient experienced renal function damage, and we have attempted various antifungal drugs for treatment. Finally, the patient's condition was brought under control. Therefore, the metagenomic next-generation sequencing pathogen detection was essential.

We report a case of a rare illness caused by the fungus Emergomyces orientalis (Es. orientalis). The patient had a fever, cough and small lumps were found in his lungs. We diagnosed the illness using a method called metagenomic next-generation sequencing that identified the fungus from the DNA in a patient sample. The drug that was given to the patient worked, but it did cause some issues with his kidneys. This report can help to inform how patients are treated in the future.

RESUMEN

Due to the limitations of traditional laboratory methods (TMs), identification of causative pathogens of numerous pulmonary infections (PIs) remains difficult. This study evaluated the value of metagenomic next generation sequencing (mNGS) in the identification of various respiratory pathogens. A total of 207 patients with TMs and mNGS data were collected for this retrospective study. TMs included sputum culture, blood, and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) analysis, or polymerase chain reaction analysis of throat swabs. Otherwise, BALF was collected and analyzed using mNGS. For bacterial pathogens, sensitivities of mNGS as compared to TMs were 76.74 % and 58.14 % (P=0.012). For fungal pathogens, the detection rate of mNGS sensitivity was higher as compared to that of TMs (93.68 % vs 22.11 %; P<0.001). The positive predictive value and negative predictive value were also greater for mNGS. Use of mNGS for BALF analysis offers good specificity and thus facilitates to the clinical diagnosis of PIs.

RESUMEN

Currently kiwifruit picking process mainly leverages manual labor, which has low productivity and high labor intensity, meanwhile, the existing kiwifruit picking machinery also has low picking efficiency and easily damages fruits. In this regard, a kiwifruit picking robot suitable for orchard operations was developed in this paper for kiwifruit grown in orchard trellis style. First, based on the analysis of kiwifruit growth pattern and cultivation parameters, the expected design requirements and objectives of a kiwifruit picking robot were proposed, and the expected workflow of the robot in the kiwifruit orchard environment was given, which in turn led to a multi-fruit envelope-cutting kiwifruit picking robot was designed. Then, the D-H method was used to establish the kinematic Equations of the kiwifruit-picking robot, the forward and inverse kinematic calculations were carried out, and the Monte Carlo method was used to analyze the workspace of the robot. By planning the trajectory of the robotic arm and calculating critical nodes in the picking path, the scheme of trajectory planning of the robot was given, and MATLAB software was applied to simulate the motion trajectory as well as to verify the feasibility of the trajectory planning scheme and the picking strategy. Finally, a kiwifruit picking test bed was set up to conduct picking tests in the form of fruit clusters. The results show that the average time to pick each cluster of fruit was 9.7s, the picking success rate was 88.0%, and the picking damage rate was 7.3%. All the indicators met the requirements of the expected design of the kiwifruit-picking robot.

RESUMEN

Cancer is one of the leading causes of death and the most important impediments to the efforts to increase life expectancy worldwide. Currently, chemotherapy is the main treatment for cancer, but it is often accompanied by side effects that affect normal tissues and organs. The search for new alternatives to chemotherapy has been a hot research topic in the field of antineoplastic medicine. Drugs targeting diseased tissues or cells can significantly improve the efficacy of drugs. Therefore, organelle-targeted antitumor drugs are being explored, such as mitochondria-targeted antitumor drugs. Mitochondria is the central site of cellular energy production and plays an important role in cell survival and death. Moreover, a large number of studies have shown a close association between mitochondrial metabolism and tumorigenesis and progression, making mitochondria a promising new target for cancer therapy. Combining mitochondrial targeting agents with drug molecules is an effective way of mitochondrial targeting. In addition, hyperpolarized tumor cell membranes and mitochondrial membrane potentially allow selective accumulation of mitochondria-targeted drugs. This enhances the direct killing of tumor cells by drug molecules while minimizing the potential toxicity to normal cells. In this review, we discuss the common pro-mitochondrial agents, the advantages of triphenylphosphine (TPP) in mitochondrial-targeted cancer therapy and systematically summarize various TPP-based mitochondria-targeting anticancer drugs.
