RESUMEN

This paper aims to propose an quantitative engineering approach to study and compare the jaw mechanisms of different marine species, considering essential mechanical parameters generally used to evaluate the performance of industrial linkage mechanisms. By leveraging these parameters, the paper demonstrates how the species' characteristics and behaviors align with the findings of biologists, enabling a meaningful comparison that was not previously possible. Seven fish species from various families are chosen to maintain a generic approach.

RESUMEN

This article presents the design, simulation, and experimental validation of a novel modular aquatic snake robot capable of surface locomotion. The modular structure allows each unit to function independently, facilitating ease of maintenance and adaptability to diverse aquatic environments. Employing the material point method with the moving least squares (MPM-MLS) simulation technique, the robot's dynamic behavior was analyzed, yielding reliable results. The control algorithm, integral to the robot's autonomous navigation, was implemented to enable forward propulsion at high speed, steering, and obstacle detection and avoidance. Extensive testing of the aquatic snake robot was conducted, demonstrating its practical viability. The robot showcased promising swimming capabilities, achieving high speeds and maneuverability. Furthermore, the obstacle detection and avoidance mechanisms were proven effective, showing the robot's ability to navigate through dynamic environments. The presented aquatic snake robot represents an advancement in the field of underwater robotics, offering a modular and versatile solution for tasks ranging from environmental monitoring to search and rescue operations.

RESUMEN

This article presents the design and the experimental tests of a bioinspired robot mimicking the cownose ray. These fish swim by moving their large and flat pectoral fins, creating a wave that pushes backward the surrounding water so that the fish is propelled forward due to momentum conservation. The robot inspired by these animals has a rigid central body, housing motors, batteries, and electronics, and flexible pectoral fins made of silicone rubber. Each of them is actuated by a servomotor driving a link inside the leading edge, and the traveling wave is reproduced thanks to the flexibility of the fin itself. In addition to the pectoral fins, two small rigid caudal fins are present to improve the robot's maneuverability. The robot has been designed, built, and tested underwater, and the experiments have shown that the locomotion principle is valid and that the robot is able to swim forward, perform left and right turns, and do floating or diving maneuvers.

RESUMEN

Goal: To provide a Multiple Emergency Ventilator (MEV) as backup in case of shortage of ICU ventilators and for use in camp hospitals. Methods: MEV provides the same oxygen mixture and peak inspiratory pressure (PIP) to 10 patients. These specifications were fixed: i) gas supply and plugs to double-limb intubation sets compatible to existing systems; ii) fluid-dynamics with no pressure drop and almost complete patients' uncoupling; iii) individual monitoring of inspiratory and expiratory pressures and flows and control of their timing; iv) easy stocking, transport, installation with self-supporting pipes. Results: A Bell-Jar System (BJS) design permitted to safely fix PIP based on Archimedes' law. The main distribution line was based on 2" stainless steel pipes assuring the required mechanical properties and over-dimensioned for fluidics. The Windkessel of the BJS and pipeline dead-volumes is 75.65 L and in the worst case of the instantaneous demand of 5 L by 10 patients (0.5 L each) shows an adiabatic PIP drop limited to -6.18%, confirming the needed uncoupling. Consequently, patients' asynchrony is permitted as needed by pressure-controlled volume-guaranteed and assisted-ventilation. Conclusions: Although MEV is proposed as a backup system, its features may cover the whole set of ventilation modes required by ICU ventilation.

RESUMEN

This paper deals with the experimental and numerical characterization of a high damping CuAlMn sheet with a martensitic micro-structure at ambient temperature. A Cu-Al-Mn shape memory alloy containing 11.65 wt.% of Al and 3 wt.% of Mn, was cast and hot rolled to the thickness of 0.4-0.3 mm. Transformation temperatures, micro-structure and mechanical properties were studied. Effects of the heat treatment on damping were investigated, identifying the proper heat treatment to obtain a higher damping. Having to model the amplitude dependent damping of the material investigated, a material model was developed based of cyclic behavior under traction-compression load. The model was validated with experiments on the non-linear damping of the material.

RESUMEN

This article investigates the efficiency of hybridizing composites with thin layers of martensitic shape memory alloys for improvement of damping. The non-linear damping behaviour of martensitic shape memory alloys is simulated using a modified version of Masing's rules. The model was implemented in a user subroutine of a finite element code, and validated by a numerical simulation of experimental hysteresis loops at different maximum strain amplitudes. The experimental free decay of hybridized glass fiber reinforced polymer beams was simulated using the finite element model, including the validated model of the investigated materials. The amplitude-dependent damping of the hybrid beams in free decay was reproduced successfully in the numerical analysis and it was proven that the hybridization technique is efficient for improvement of damping.
