RESUMEN

(1) Background: Despite numerous noninvasive methods for assessing liver fibrosis, effective ultrasound parameters remain limited. We aimed to identify easily measurable ultrasound parameters capable of predicting liver fibrosis in patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and metabolic-dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD); (2) Methods: The data of 994 patients diagnosed with NAFLD via ultrasound at the Armed Forces Goyang Hospital were retrospectively collected from June 2022 to July 2023. A liver stiffness measurement (LSM) ≥ 8.2 kPa was classified as significant fibrosis. Liver steatosis with cardiometabolic risk factors was defined as MASLD. Two ultrasound variables, the portal venous pulsatility index (VPI) and main portal vein diameter (MPVD), were measured; (3) Results: Of 994 patients, 68 had significant fibrosis. Significant differences in VPI (0.27 vs. 0.34, p < 0.001) and MPVD (10.16 mm vs. 8.98 mm, p < 0.001) were observed between the fibrotic and non-fibrotic groups. A logistic analysis adjusted for age and body mass index (BMI) revealed that only VPI (OR of 0.955, p = 0.022, VPI on a 0.01 scale) and MPVD (OR of 1.501, p < 0.001) were significantly associated with significant liver fibrosis. In the MASLD cohort (n = 939), VPI and MPVD were associated with significant fibrosis. To achieve better accuracy in predicting liver fibrosis, we established a nomogram that incorporated MPVD and VPI. The established nomogram was validated in the test cohort, yielding an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.821 for detecting significant liver fibrosis; (4) Conclusions: VPI and MPVD, as possible surrogate markers, are useful in predicting significant fibrosis in patients with NAFLD and MASLD.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to compare 1-year clinical outcomes between patients who underwent a Nuss operation or vacuum bell therapy and to present vacuum bell therapy as a possible alternative treatment modality for patients who prefer non-surgical correction of pectus excavatum. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of pectus excavatum patients who had undergone vacuum bell therapy for more than 1 year and examined patients who had undergone Nuss bar removal more than 1 year previously. The treatment outcomes were evaluated by comparing changes in the Haller index before and after treatment in both patient groups. RESULTS: We included 57 patients in this study and divided them into 2 groups according to the type of treatment received. Both groups showed no significant difference in the post-treatment Haller index after 1 year of follow-up, although the Nuss operation group showed a greater change in the Haller index than the vacuum bell group. CONCLUSION: Although the Nuss operation is a well-established and effective treatment of choice to correct pectus excavatum, vacuum bell therapy showed comparable outcomes and could become an alternative treatment modality for select patients who prefer non-invasive treatment.

As a part of phylogenomic study of graminids, we report the complete plastome sequence of Flagellaria indica L. (Flagellariaceae) (NCBI No. MZ504969). This is the first reported complete plastome sequence from the Flagellariaceae. This plastome shows typical quadripartite structure. The plastome size is 161,643 bp, which consists of 88,714 bp large single copy (LSC), 19,065 bp small single-copy (SSC), and 26,932 bp inverted repeat (IR) regions. However, we detected F. indica plastome has a 288 bp small inversion between ycf3 and trnS-GGA. The palindromic repeats of 10 bp (TTCCAATTTC/GAAATTGGAA) were located on the two break points of inversion. F. indica plastome contains 113 genes, including 79 protein-coding, 30 tRNA, and four rRNA genes. Unlike other families of graminids, the functional ycf1 and ycf2 genes exist. Sixteen genes contain one intron and two genes (clpP and ycf3) have two introns. Sixty-two simple sequence repeat (SSR) loci are scattered in the plastome, respectively. The phylogenetic tree shows that Flagellariaceae are the basal sister lineage of other graminid families.

RESUMEN

Sonerilacardamomensis, a new species of family Melastomataceae from the Central Cardamom Protected Area in Koh Kong province of southwestern Cambodia, is described and illustrated. The species is similar to S.violifolia Hook.f. ex Triana, but is readily distinguished by its cordate leaf base, lack of setae at the nodes, longer pedicels, smaller petals, smaller hypanthiums and smaller capsules.

RESUMEN

Eriocaulon is a genus of c. 470 aquatic and wetland species of the monocot plant family Eriocaulaceae. It is widely distributed in Africa, Asia and America, with centres of species richness in the tropics. Most species of Eriocaulon grow in wetlands although some inhabit shallow rivers and streams with an apparent adaptive morphology of elongated submerged stems. In a previous molecular phylogenetic hypothesis, Eriocaulon was recovered as sister of the African endemic genus Mesanthemum. Several regional infrageneric classifications have been proposed for Eriocaulon. This study aims to critically assess the existing infrageneric classifications through phylogenetic reconstruction of infrageneric relationships, based on DNA sequence data of four chloroplast markers and one nuclear marker. There is little congruence between our molecular results and previous morphology-based infrageneric classifications. However, some similarities can be found, including Fyson's sect. Leucantherae and Zhang's sect. Apoda. Further phylogenetic studies, particularly focusing on less well sampled regions such as the Neotropics, will help provide a more global overview of the relationships in Eriocaulon and may enable suggesting the first global infrageneric classification.

RESUMEN

This study describes and illustrates Chrysospleniumramosissimum, a new plant species from Mt. Seonjaryeong, located in the central region of the Korean Peninsula. The species is most similar to C.valdepilosum but is readily distinguishable by the presence of yellowish-green bracteal leaves during flowering, highly branched sterile branches, shiny silvery dots on sterile branch leaves and larger tubercles on the seed coat.

RESUMEN

Impatiens bokorensis, a new species of family Balsaminaceae from Phnum Bokor National Park in southwestern Cambodia, is described and illustrated. The species is similar to Impatiens patula, but is readily distinguished by the orbicular-obovate dorsal petal, shorter pedicels and larger seeds.

BACKGROUND: A new species, Begonia myanmarica, was discovered from Myanmar and herein documented. Characterized by a single developed wing in the ovary/fruit, this species would be assigned to sect. Monopteron (sensu Doorenbos et al. in The sections of Begonia including descriptions, keys and species lists: studies in Begoniaceae VI. Wageningen Agricultural University, Wageningen, 1998) that is known by B. griffithiana and B. nepalensis from the Himalaya. To confirm its sectional assignment, we conducted morphological, phylogenetic and cytological studies. RESULTS: Morphological observations indicated that B. myanmarica was distinguishable from the two known species of sect. Monopteron by the leaf shape and size, 1-locular ovary, parietal placentation and chromosome number. Molecular phylogenetic analysis using nrITS sequences showed that B. myanmarica was not allied with the clade of sect. Monopteron, though both were nested within sect. Platycentrum-sect. Sphenanthera clade. CONCLUSIONS: Studies of morphology, molecular phylogenetics and cytology support the recognition of the new species, Begonia myanmarica, which is fully described and illustrated. Our results also indicate that B. myanmarica is not closely related to species previously assigned to sect. Monopteron, suggesting that the fruit morphology of a single developed wing in the ovary/fruit characterizing sect. Monopteron is homoplasious.

Wisteria floribunda and Wisteria sinensis are ornamental woody vines in the Fabaceae. The complete chloroplast genome sequences of the two species were generated by de novo assembly using whole genome next generation sequences. The chloroplast genomes of W. floribunda and W. sinensis were 130 960 bp and 130 561 bp long, respectively, and showed inverted repeat (IR)-lacking structures as those reported in IRLC in the Fabaceae. The chloroplast genomes of both species contained same number of protein-coding sequences (77), tRNA genes (30), and rRNA genes (4). The phylogenetic analysis with the reported chloroplast genomes confirmed close taxonomical relationship of W. floribunda and W. sinensis.
