RESUMEN

Statins are well-tolerated and widely available lipid-lowering medications with neuroprotective effects against traumatic brain injury (TBI). However, whether delayed statin therapy starting in the subacute phase promotes recovery after TBI is unknown. Elongation of the very long-chain fatty acid protein 1 (ELOVL1) is involved in astrocyte-mediated neurotoxicity, but its role in TBI and the relationship between ELOVL1 and statins are unclear. We hypothesized that delayed simvastatin treatment promotes neurological functional recovery after TBI by regulating the ELOVL1-mediated production of very long-chain fatty acids (VLCFAs). ICR male mice received daily intragastric administration of 1, 2 or 5mg/kg simvastatin on Days 1-14, 3-14, 5-14, or 7-14 after cryogenic TBI (cTBI). The results showed that simvastatin promoted motor functional recovery in a dose-dependent manner, with a wide therapeutic window of at least 7 days postinjury. Meanwhile, simvastatin inhibited astrocyte and microglial overactivation and glial scar formation, and increased total dendritic length, neuronal complexity and spine density on day 14 after cTBI. The up-regulation of ELOVL1 expression and saturated VLCFAs concentrations in the cortex surrounding the lesion caused by cTBI was inhibited by simvastatin, which was related to the inhibition of the mTOR signaling. Overexpression of ELOVL1 in astrocytes surrounding the lesion using HBAAV2/9-GFAP-m-ELOVL1-3xFlag-EGFP partially attenuated the benefits of simvastatin. These results showed that delayed simvastatin treatment promoted functional recovery and brain tissue repair after TBI through the downregulation of ELOVL1 expression by inhibiting mTOR signaling. Astrocytic ELOVL1 may be a potential target for rehabilitation after TBI.

RESUMEN

Antipsychotic drugs have been shown to have antitumor effects but have had limited potency in the clinic. Here, we unveil that pimozide inhibits lysosome hydrolytic function to suppress fatty acid and cholesterol release in glioblastoma (GBM), the most lethal brain tumor. Unexpectedly, GBM develops resistance to pimozide by boosting glutamine consumption and lipogenesis. These elevations are driven by SREBP-1, which we find upregulates the expression of ASCT2, a key glutamine transporter. Glutamine, in turn, intensifies SREBP-1 activation through the release of ammonia, creating a feedforward loop that amplifies both glutamine metabolism and lipid synthesis, leading to drug resistance. Disrupting this loop via pharmacological targeting of ASCT2 or glutaminase, in combination with pimozide, induces remarkable mitochondrial damage and oxidative stress, leading to GBM cell death in vitro and in vivo. Our findings underscore the promising therapeutic potential of effectively targeting GBM by combining glutamine metabolism inhibition with lysosome suppression.

RESUMEN

Optimizing water allocation is a crucial strategy for water planning in large basins, such as the Yellow River basin. The transforming water supply pattern, triggered by inter-basin water transfer, urges the optimization and refinement of water allocation. Here, we predict the future water demand for different sectors at the provincial level and carry out future water allocation based on a multi-objective allocation model. The results imply that "demand increases in midstream and water deficits in downstream" would persist by 2050, and the demand structure highlights potential sectoral rivalry for water resources in each province. Water transfer will be the "antidote" to water disputes and will account for 19.8% and 34.5% of the water demand in 2030 and 2050, respectively. This study provides a basis for the policymaking of water management and establishes the future allocation pattern from water resources to sectors in each province in the Yellow River basin.

RESUMEN

Compared to normal cells, tumour cells exhibit an upregulation of glucose transporters and an increased rate of glycolytic activity. In previous research, we successfully identified a promising hit compound BH10 through a rigorous screening process, which demonstrates a potent capacity for inhibiting cancer cell proliferation by targeting glucose metabolism. In the current study, we identify Kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1 (Keap1) as a potential protein target of BH10via avidin pull-down assays with biotinylated-BH10. Subsequently, we present a comprehensive analysis of a series of BH10 analogues characterized by the incorporation of a naphthoimidazole scaffold and the introduction of a triazole ring with diverse terminal functional groups. Notably, compound 4d has emerged as the most potent candidate, exhibiting better anti-cancer activities against HEC1A cancer cells with an IC50 of 2.60 µM, an extended biological half-life, and an improved pharmacokinetic profile (compared to BH10) in mice.

RESUMEN

Two-dimensional layered semiconductor materials as a distinctive class of materials are comprehensively explored for widespread applications due to narrow bandgap, controllable morphology, and tunable metal cation composition. Herein, we constructed a sensing platform of surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) by combination of nickelcobalt layered double hydroxide (NiCo-LDH) microurchins and plasmonic silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) for fungicide detection of thiabendazole (TBZ). The NiCo-LDHs/Ag-NPs microcomposites consist of NiCo-LDHs microurchins having a large number of nanoneedles deposited with photoreduced Ag NPs. The SERS platform with NiCo-LDHs/Ag-NPs shows an excellent SERS performance for TBZ detection, including an ultra-low detection limit of 1.49 × 10-11 M, a sublime enhancement factor of 1.71 × 109, high uniformity, good reproducibility, and long-term storage stability. The ultrahigh SERS activity of NiCo-LDH/Ag-NPs can be attributed to strong electromagnetic enhancement in the nanoscale gaps between Ag NPs, massive charge transfer through large-area NiCo-LDH/Ag-NPs interfaces, and the synergistic action of electromagnetic and charge transfer mechanisms. Besides, the unique morphology of NiCo-LDHs/Ag-NPs microcomposite provides a broad surface area for adsorption of TBZ molecules for further Raman signal enhancement. The practicability of the proposed SERS platform is confirmed by detecting TBZ in the real samples of apple juice and river water. The exceptional self-cleaning capability of the NiCo-LDHs/Ag-NPs microcomposite with an retention rate of 81.97 % even after the fifth degradation cycle underscores its impressive sustainable reusability and cost-effectiveness. The findings in this work lay the foundation for the development of high-performance SERS platforms to ensure food safety and environmental protection.

RESUMEN

Seven previously undescribed compounds, including one amino acid hybrid sesquiterpene areolatol A (1), two unusual natural sesquiterpenoid skeleton areolatones A-B (2-3) and four benzo[j]fluoranthene areolaranes A-D (4-7) were characterized from Annulohypoxylon areolatum. The structures of the compounds were determined by extensive spectroscopic analysis, X-ray diffraction analysis, and ECD and NMR computational. Notably, areolatol A (1) was the first reported sesquiterpene featuring a 5/7/3-ring system and hybridized with two molecular amino acids. In addition, areolaranes A-D (4-7) were identified as possible chemophenetic markers.

RESUMEN

RATIONALE: As one of the drugs used to treat Helicobacter pylori, furazolidone has been reported to cause gastrointestinal reactions, allergies, dizziness, and more. However, its related drug-induced lung injury has been rarely reported. Furthermore, there have been no reports of the timing for initiating hormone therapy when a pulmonary adverse reaction occurs. PATIENT CONCERNS: We report 2 cases, both of them showed interlobular septal thickening and nodules on the chest computed tomography. One had more discomfort symptoms and had a higher eosinophil count than the normal range, while the other only had fever symptoms and had an eosinophil count within the normal range. DIAGNOSES: Pulmonary adverse reaction caused by furazolidone was diagnosed. INTERVENTIONS: Furazolidone was discontinued, and the person with increased eosinophils received hormone therapy, while the other person did not. OUTCOMES: After discontinuation of medication and treatment, the symptoms of the 2 patients gradually improved. LESSONS: This report suggests that furazolidone may cause pulmonary adverse reactions to raise clinical awareness, and for the first time indicates that hormone therapy is needed for patients whose eosinophils continue to increase after discontinuation.

RESUMEN

The powdery mildew caused by Eeysiphe heraclei is a serious concern in Heracleum moellendorffii Hance. Therefore, exploring the mechanisms underlying sugar efflux from host cells to the fungus during the plant-fungus interaction showed great significance. The study successfully cloned HmSWEET8 and HmSTP1 genes based on RNA-seq technology. The complementation assays in yeast EBY.VW4000 found HmSWEET8 and HmSTP1 transporting hexose. Over-expressing or silencing HmSWEET8 in H. moellendorffii leaves increased or decreased powdery mildew susceptibility by changing glucose concentration in infective sites. Meanwhile, over-expressing HmSTP1 in H. moellendorffii leaves also increased powdery mildew susceptibility by elevating the glucose content of infective areas. Additionally, HmSTP1 expression was up-regulated obviously in HmSWEET8 over-expressed plants and inhibited significantly in HmSWEET8 silenced plants. Co-expressing HmSWEET8 and HmSTP1 genes significantly increased powdery mildew susceptibility compared with over-expressed HmSWEET8 or HmSTP1 plants alone. The results demonstrated that HmSTP1 may assist with HmSWEET8 to promote E. heraclei infection. Consequently, the infection caused by E. heraclei resulted in the activation of HmSWEET8, leading to an increased transfer of glucose to the apoplasmic spaces at the sites of infection, then, HmSTP1 facilitated the transport of glucose into host cells, promoting powdery mildew infection.

RESUMEN

On the way to carbon neutrality, directly catalyzing atmospheric CO2 into high-value chemicals might be an effective approach to mitigate the negative impacts of rising airborne CO2 concentrations. Here, we pioneer the investigation of the influence of the H2/CO2 partial pressure ratio (PPR) on air-level CO2 methanation. Using Ni/CeO2 as a case catalyst, increasing H2/CO2 PPR significantly improves low-temperature CO2 conversion and high-temperature CH4 selectivity, i.e., from 10 of H2/CO2 PPR on, CO2 is completely methanized at 250 °C, and nearly 100% CH4 selectivity is achieved at 400 °C. 100-hour stability tests demonstrate the practical application potential of Ni/CeO2 at 250 °C and 400 °C. In-situ DRIFTS reveal that reinforced formate pathway by increasing H2/CO2 PPR is responsible for the high CH4 yield. In contrast, even though the CO pathway dominated CO2 conversion on Ni is enhanced by rising H2/CO2 PPR, but at a high reaction temperature, the promoted CO desorption still leads to lower CH4 selectivity. This work offers deep insights into the direct air-level CO2 resourceization, contributing to the achievement of airborne CO2 reductions.

RESUMEN

Porcine Circovirus type (PCV) 2 is an important pathogen that has been circulating worldwide and has cuased serious economic loss in pig industry. However, both PCV3 and PCV4 are newly emerging viruses. In Taiwan, PCV2 has been one of the critical pathogens in pig frams and PCV3 has been detected since 2016; however, the epidemiolog of PCV3 in Taiwan remains unclear and PCV4 has yet to be identified. Therefore, in order to detect the positive rate of PCV2, to investigate the epidemiolog of PCV3 in the pig farms, and to examine whether pigs were infected with PCV4 in Taiwan, a total of 128 samples from 46 clinical cases of pigs were collected from September 2020 to December 2021. The case detection rates were 54.3 % for PCV2, 43.5 % for PCV3, and 2.2 % for PCV4. The results suggested that the positivity rates for both PCV2 and PCV3 were still high in Taiwan. In addition, PCV3 was detected among cases from all 7 sampled counties and in 11 of the 16 sampling months, suggesting that PCV3 may lead to endemic pig disease in Taiwan. Surprisingly, the PCV4 was also detected, suggesting the first PCV4 case in Taiwan. The complete genomes derived from the identified PCV3 and PCV4 strains were subsequently sequenced followed by phylogenetic analysis. The results suggested that the 17 identified PCV3 strains could be divided into Taiwanese-like and Japanese-like strains. In addition, the amino acid residues at positions 27, 80, and 212 in the identified PCV4 cap protein were asparagine, isoleucine, and methionine, respectively, and thus the identified PCV4 was catalorized into clade PCV4b. Consequently, it is concluded that (i) the prevalence of PCV2 and PCV3 is still high in Taiwanese pigs, (ii) PCV3 has may be an endemic infection in Taiwan and can be classified into Japanese-like and Taiwanese-like strains, (iii) PCV4 was detected for the first time in Taiwanese pigs and can be classified into PCV4b. It remains unclear how PCV2, PCV3, and PCV4 were introduced to Taiwan, and thus continuous investigation of emerging pathogens in pigs is needed.

RESUMEN

T-cell death-associated gene 8 (TDAG8), a G-protein-coupled receptor sensing physiological or weak acids, regulates inflammatory responses. However, its role in traumatic brain injury (TBI) remains unknown. Our recent study showed that delayed CO2 postconditioning (DCPC) has neuroreparative effects after TBI. We hypothesized that activating astrocytic TDAG8 is a key mechanism for DCPC. WT and TDAG8-/- mice received DCPC daily by transiently inhaling 10% CO2 after controlled cortical impact (CCI). HBAAV2/9-GFAP-m-TDAG8-3xflag-EGFP was used to overexpress TDAG8 in astrocytes. The beam walking test, mNSS, immunofluorescence and Golgi-Cox staining were used to evaluate motor function, glial activation and dendritic plasticity. DCPC significantly improved motor function; increased total dendritic length, neuronal complexity and spine density; inhibited overactivation of astrocytes and microglia; and promoted the expression of astrocytic brain-derived neurotrophic factor in WT but not TDAG8-/- mice. Overexpressing TDAG8 in astrocytes surrounding the lesion in TDAG8-/- mice restored the beneficial effects of DCPC. Although the effects of DCPC on Days 14-28 were much weaker than those of DCPC on Days 3-28 in WT mice, these effects were further enhanced by overexpressing astrocytic TDAG8. Astrocytic TDAG8 is a key target of DCPC for TBI rehabilitation. Its overexpression is a strategy that broadens the therapeutic window and enhances the effects of DCPC.

RESUMEN

Toxoplasma gondii is a zoonotic pathogen that can infect farm animals, companion animals, and humans, sometimes causing public health issues. In Taiwan, the pig industry is a vital agricultural industry, with a self-sufficiency rate of 91 %, and pigs are also food-producing animal reservoirs of Toxoplasma gondii. Infected pigs are usually asymptomatic, and abortions and death may occur in severe cases. We combined an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and an indirect fluorescence assay (IFA) to investigate the seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii among pig populations in Taiwan. A stratified sampling approach to determine the number of sample farms proportional to the number of pig farms in each county was employed, with 15 blood samples collected at each farm between July and September 2017. With the tested results, empirical Bayesian smoothing was utilized to assess the proportion of Toxoplasma-positive farms at the county level. Bayesian mixed-effects logistic regression models, incorporating farm and county as random effects, were employed to investigate associations between Toxoplasma test results and potential risk factors. A total of 930 serum samples from 62 pig farms were collected and tested. An overall herd prevalence of 27.4 % was shown with the seroprevalence in northern Taiwan being greater than that in southern Taiwan. The sampling month and companion dog density in 2017 were significantly associated with Toxoplasma infections in pigs. With every increase in the number of companion dogs per km² at the county level, the odds of Toxoplasma infection in pigs increased by 4.7 % (95 % CI: 1.7-8.9 %). This study demonstrated that combining ELISA for screening with IFA for confirmation is a cost-effective and time-saving method for conducting a large-scale sample investigation. This was also the first nationwide, cross-sectional study in Taiwanese pig herds to investigate Toxoplasma gondii infection.

RESUMEN

Raphidiopsis blooms are notorious for cyanotoxin formation and strong invasiveness, threatening the stability of aquatic ecosystems and human health. The protozoa Paramecium can potentially serve as an organism for controlling Raphidiopsis blooms owing to its grazing effect. However, the grazing ability of Paramecium is largely determined by the size of the prey, and the population of Raphidiopsis consists of filaments of varying lengths and sizes. The selective grazing behavior of Paramecium toward short-length or small-sized filaments in the Raphidiopsis population, as opposed to long filaments, remains unclear. Therefore, in this study, we co-cultured the predator Paramecium sp. with different initial abundances and the prey Raphidiopsis raciborskii to explore this knowledge gap. Our results suggested that: (1) the population of R. raciborskii declined under the selective grazing effect of Paramecium sp. on short filaments, whereas R. raciborskii with long filaments survived; (2) the growth of Paramecium sp. feeding on the same abundance of R. raciborskii was reduced at higher initial abundances, whereas its carrying capacity exhibited an opposite trend; (3) under ingestion by Paramecium sp., the morphology of R. raciborskii developed in the direction of becoming larger, and higher initial abundances of Paramecium sp. intensified this process; (4) increasing initial abundance of Paramecium sp. aggravated the decline of R. raciborskii photosynthetic activity. Therefore, the grazing effect of Paramecium sp. on R. raciborskii mainly affects filaments of short length or small size. Collectively, these results clarify the inter-species interaction between the protozoa Paramecium and filamentous cyanobacteria Raphidiopsis, including population dynamics and morphological and physiological changes in the predator and prey. Such insights into the interactions between Paramecium and R. raciborskii may have implications for the biological control of blooms caused by filamentous cyanobacteria.

RESUMEN

In the present study, the mechanical response and deformation behavior of a Mg AZ31 plate with different types of pre-twins was systematically investigated under biaxial tension along the normal direction (ND) and transverse direction (TD) with different stress ratios. The results show that significant hardening was observed under biaxial tension. The yield values in the direction of larger stress values were higher than those under uniaxial loading conditions, and the solute atom segregation at twin boundaries generates more obvious strengthening effect. Noting that, for TRH (with cross compression along the rolling direction (RD) and TD and annealing at 180 °C for about 0.5 h) sample, the strength effect of the RD yield stress σRD:σND = 2:1 was higher than that of the ND yield stress under stress ratio σRD:σND = 1:2. There is a complex competition between twinning and detwinning under biaxal tension along the ND and TD of the pre-twinned samples with the variation in the stress ratio along the TD and RD. The variation in the twin volume fractions for all samples under biaxial firstly decreases and then increases with a higher stress ratio along the ND. As for the TDH sample (precompression along the TD and annealing), the changes of the twin volume fraction were lower than that of the TR sample (cross compression along the TD and RD). However, the amplitude of variation in twin volume fraction of the TRH sample is higher than that of the TR sample. This is because the relative activity of detwinning decreases and that of twinning increases, as the ND stress mainly leads to the growth of pre-twins and the TD stress often promotes detwinning of primary twins. With a higher stress ratio along the ND, the activity of twinning deformation increases and that of detwinning decreases.

RESUMEN

Solid-phase synthesis underpins many advances in synthetic and combinatorial chemistry, biology, and material science. The immobilization of a reacting species on the solid support makes interfacing of reagents an important challenge in this approach. In traditional synthesis columns, this leads to reaction errors that limit the product yield and necessitates excess consumption of the mobile reagent phase. Although droplet microfluidics can mitigate these problems, its adoption is fundamentally limited by the inability to controllably interface microbeads and reagent droplets. Here, we introduce Dielectrophoretic Bead-Droplet Reactor as a physical method to implement solid-phase synthesis on individual functionalized microbeads by encapsulating and ejecting them from microdroplets by tuning the supply voltage. Proof-of-concept demonstration of the enzymatic coupling of fluorescently labeled nucleotides onto the bead using this reactor yielded a 3.2-fold higher fidelity over columns through precise interfacing of individual microreactors and beads. Our work combines microparticle manipulation and droplet microfluidics to address a long-standing problem in solid-phase synthesis with potentially wide-ranging implications.

RESUMEN

In order to investigate the effects of vegetation changes on runoff and to obtain recommendations for improving runoff in the Weihe River Basin (. In this study, a spatiotemporal geographic autocorrelation weighted regression analysis (SGAWRA) approach was newly developed based on previous studies. This approach investigates spatial non-stationarity of the dynamic response from vegetation variations to climatic change and human activity. Implications of spatial non-stationarity related to runoff variability were also discussed, which in turn yield the effect that vegetation changes have on runoff. The method systematically analysed the spatial non-stationarity of vegetation variations and its associated effects on runoff. Therefore, more closely related results with less error were produced at each step, and results with more accuracy were obtained. These results indicated that the average trend rates of NDVI in the annual average, each season, and the growing season (Growing season refers to April to September) exceeded 0. Areas where NDVI show a growing trend cover more than 50%, which is greater than the area with a decreasing trend. The GWR regression parameters of precipitation, average temperature, and NDVI are all greater than 0. The GWR regression parameters of human activities and NDVI also have more than 50% of the area greater than 0. Based on the visual analysis of the calculation results, it can be seen that there are obvious spatial trends in the data, and the spatial data are significantly different between different regions. Therefore, WRB can be regarded as spatio-temporally non-stationary. In the WRB, the underlying surface change with vegetation change as the prominent feature is the leading cause (about 60%) of the runoff attenuation. The results showed that WRB has spatial and temporal non-stationarity. The spatial non-stationarity of vegetation has a greater effect on runoff changes. The results of this study support recommendations for improving runoff in the WRB.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: GPR65 (G protein-coupled receptor 65) can sense extracellular acidic environment to regulate pathophysiological processes. Pretreatment with the GPR65 agonist BTB09089 has been proven to produce neuroprotection in acute ischemic stroke. However, whether delayed BTB09089 treatment and neuronal GPR65 activation promote neurorestoration remains unknown. METHODS: Ischemic stroke was induced in wild-type (WT) or GPR65 knockout (GPR65-/-) mice by photothrombotic ischemia. Male mice were injected intraperitoneally with BTB09089 every other day at days 3, 7, or 14 poststroke. AAV-Syn-GPR65 (adenoassociated virus-synapsin-GPR65) was utilized to overexpress GPR65 in the peri-infarct cortical neurons of GPR65-/- and WT mice. Motor function was monitored by grid-walk and cylinder tests. The neurorestorative effects of BTB09089 were observed by immunohistochemistry, Golgi-Cox staining, and Western blotting. RESULTS: BTB09089 significantly promoted motor outcomes in WT but not in GPR65-/- mice, even when BTB09089 was delayed for 3 to 7 days. BTB09089 inhibited the activation of microglia and glial scar progression in WT but not in GPR65-/- mice. Meanwhile, BTB09089 reduced the decrease in neuronal density in WT mice, but this benefit was abolished in GPR65-/- mice and reemerged by overexpressing GPR65 in peri-infarct cortical neurons. Furthermore, BTB09089 increased the GAP43 (growth-associated protein-43) and synaptophysin puncta density, dendritic spine density, dendritic branch length, and dendritic complexity by overexpressing GPR65 in the peri-infarct cortical neurons of GPR65-/- mice, which was accompanied by increased levels of p-CREB (phosphorylated cAMP-responsive element-binding protein). In addition, the therapeutic window of BTB09089 was extended to day 14 by overexpressing GPR65 in the peri-infarct cortical neurons of WT mice. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings indicated that delayed BTB09089 treatment improved neurological functional recovery and brain tissue repair poststroke through activating neuronal GRP65. GPR65 overexpression may be a potential strategy to expand the therapeutic time window of GPR65 agonists for neurorehabilitation after ischemic stroke.

RESUMEN

Gelatin polymers made from partially degraded collagen are important biomaterials, but their in-situ analysis suffers from uncontrollable covalent labelling and poor spatial-temporal imaging resolution. Herein, three tetrazolate-tagged tetraphenylethylene fluorophores (TPE-TAs) are introduced for practical fluorogenic labelling of gelatin in aqueous phase and hydrogels. These probes with aggregation-induced emission characteristics offer negligible background and elicit turn-on fluorescence by simply mixing with the gelatin in aqueous phase, giving a detection limit of 0.15 mg/L over a linear dynamic range up to 100 mg/L. This method does not work for collagens and causes minimal interference with gelatin properties. Mechanistic studies reveal a key role for multivalent electrostatic interactions between the abundant basic residues in gelatin (e. g., lysine, hydroxylysine, arginine) and anionic tetrazolate moieties of the lipophilic fluorophore synergistically in spatially rigid macromolecular encapsulation to achieve fluorogenic labelling. The AIE strategy by forming non-covalent fluorophore-gelatin complexes was developed for novel hydrogels that exhibited reversible fluorescence in response to dynamic microstructural changes in the hydrogel scaffold upon salting-in/out treatments, and enabled high spatial-temporal imaging of the fiber network in lyophilized samples. This work may open up avenues for in-situ imaging analysis and evaluation of gelatin-based biomaterials during processes such as in vivo degradation and mineralization.

RESUMEN

The structure of human language is inherently hierarchical. The left posterior inferior frontal gyrus (LpIFG) is proposed to be a core region for constructing syntactic hierarchies. However, it remains unclear whether LpIFG plays a causal role in syntactic processing in Mandarin Chinese and whether its contribution depends on syntactic complexity, working memory, or both. We addressed these questions by applying inhibitory continuous theta-burst stimulation (cTBS) over LpIFG. Thirty-two participants processed sentences containing embedded relative clauses (i.e., complex syntactic processing), syntactically simpler coordinated sentences (i.e., simple syntactic processing), and non-hierarchical word lists (i.e., word list processing) after receiving real or sham cTBS. We found that cTBS significantly increased the coefficient of variation, a representative index of processing stability, in complex syntactic processing (esp., when subject relative clause was embedded) but not in the other two conditions. No significant changes in d' and reaction time were detected in these conditions. The findings suggest that (a) inhibitory effect of cTBS on the LpIFG might be prominent in perturbing the complex syntactic processing stability but subtle in altering the processing quality; and (b) the causal role of the LpIFG seems to be specific for syntactic processing rather than working memory capacity, further evidencing their separability in LpIFG. Collectively, these results support the notion of the LpIFG as a core region for complex syntactic processing across languages.
