BACKGROUND: Managing residual and recurrent craniopharyngioma effectively is crucial for improving patient outcomes. This study evaluates the combined use of gamma knife and phosphorus-32 brachytherapy, offering insights into alternative, less invasive treatment strategies. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of 97 patients treated from 2010 to 2016 for residual and recurrent craniopharyngioma using gamma knife and phosphorus-32 brachytherapy. We classified these patients into three groups: superficial solid (Group A), simple cystic (Group B), and mixed cystic-solid (Group C). We assessed the treatment's effectiveness by the tumor control rates and evaluated safety by monitoring vision, endocrine function improvements, and complication rates. RESULTS: The treatment achieved complete and adequate control rates of 49.5% and 87.6%, respectively. We observed improvements in vision or visual fields in 55.1% of the patients. The morbidity rate was 15.5%. The study found no significant differences in tumor control rates among the various lesion types. CONCLUSION: The combination of gamma knife and phosphorus-32 brachytherapy presents a viable, minimally invasive alternative for treating residual and recurrent craniopharyngioma. It offers high tumor control and functional improvement rates, suggesting its potential as a preferred strategy in some instances.

With the higher requirements of various tactical and technical indicators of the weapon systems, the current research on the ignition and combustion characteristics of different types of solid propellants is not comprehensive. In more complex and harsh environmental conditions, the pressure affects the ignition and combustion characteristics. Therefore, the paper studies the ignition and combustion characteristics of the modified double-base propellants (MDB propellants) and fuel-rich propellants (FR propellants) under low-pressure environment. Combining experiment and theory, the ignition delay time and burning rate of two kinds of solid propellants are compared and analyzed at low pressure by the laser ignition experimental device. The results displayed that the burning flames of the FR and MDB propellant presented evident V-shape and cylindrical, respectively. The flame brightness decreased with the decrease in pressure. With the increase of pressure and heat flux, the ignition delay time of the MDB propellant and the FR propellant decreased. By comparison, Model 2 of the ignition delay time was more effective for the estimation of the ignition delay time of the FR propellant. The experimental results are compared with the three burning rate models, which are the Vielle formula (Model 1), Summerfield formula (Model 2), and B-number burning rate formula (Model 3). The results showed the burning rate was more in accord with Model 3.
RESUMEN
Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa), a ubiquitous opportunistic pathogen, can frequently cause chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cystic fibrosis and chronic wounds, and potentially lead to severe morbidity and mortality. Timely and adequate treatment of nosocomial infection in clinic depends on rapid detection and accurate identification of P. aeruginosa and its early-stage antibiotic susceptibility test. Traditional methods like plating culture, polymerase chain reaction, and enzyme-linked immune sorbent assays are time-consuming and require expensive equipment, limiting the rapid diagnostic application. Advanced sensing strategy capable of fast, sensitive and simple detection with low cost has therefore become highly desired in point of care testing (POCT) of nosocomial pathogens. Within this review, advanced detection and sensing strategies for P. aeruginosa cells along with associated quorum sensing (QS) molecules over the last ten years are discussed and summarized. Firstly, the principles of four commonly used sensing strategies including localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), electrochemistry, and fluorescence are briefly overviewed. Then, the advancement of the above sensing techniques for P. aeruginosa cells and its QS biomarkers detection are introduced, respectively. In addition, the integration with novel compatible platforms towards clinical application is highlighted in each section. Finally, the current achievements are summarized along with proposed challenges and prospects.

IL-29 plays an important role in the pathogenesis of many types of autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. Objective: To study the role of IL-29 in the pathogenesis of psoriasis vulgaris. Methods: The authors detected the serum levels of IL-29 in forty-one patients with psoriasis vulgaris, twenty-three patients with atopic dermatitis and thirty-eight age and gender-matched controls by sandwich Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA). The effects of IL-29 on the expression of cytokines, such as IL-6, IL-17, IL-8, IL-4, IL10, Interferon (IFN-γ) and Tumor Necrosis Factor-α (TNF-α), in PBMCs and HaCat cells were determined by real-time quantitative PCR. Results: Our data indicated that serum IL-29 levels were significantly elevated in patients with psoriasis vulgaris when compared with atopic dermatitis patients and the control group. Moreover, Serum levels of IL-29 were closely associated with the severity of psoriasis vulgaris. Furthermore, IL-29 up-regulated the mRNA expression levels of IL-6, IL-17 and TNF-α in PBMCs from psoriasis vulgaris patients. In addition, IL-29 enhanced the IL-6 and IL-8 expression from the HaCat cells. Conclusion: This study provides the first observations on the association of IL-29 and psoriasis vulgaris and showed elevated IL-29 serum levels. The authors suggest that IL-29 may play a role in the pathogenesis of psoriasis vulgaris.

Older adults are at increased risk of pneumococcal disease. This work aims to evaluate whether there is any decrease in serum IgG against variants of the antigens Pneumococcal surface protein A (PspA) and Pneumococcal surface protein C (PspC) in healthy adults with increasing age. Levels of IgG against PspA and PspC variants were determined by ELISA in serum samples comparing volunteers 18-30 years of age with volunteers who were 50-70+ before and after an experimental pneumococcal colonization challenge. The serotype 6B strain used in the challenge belongs to a minor group of pneumococcal isolates expressing two PspC variants. There was a decrease in levels of IgG with increasing age for the most common PspA variants and for all PspC variants analyzed. No correlation was found between basal levels of IgG against these antigens and protection against colonization. There was an increase in levels of IgG against PspA variants that are more cross-reactive with the variant expressed by the challenge strain post challenge in younger individuals who became colonized. Since the challenge strain used in our study expresses two different PspC variants, an increase in serum IgG against all PspC variants tested was observed in younger individuals who became colonized. For some of the antigen variants tested, a decrease in serum IgG was observed in young volunteers who were challenged but did not become colonized. Serum IgG antibodies against PspA and PspC variants thus decrease with age in healthy adults, but there is no correlation between levels of IgG against these antigens and protection against human experimental colonization. Though no correlation between naturally induced serum IgG antibodies against PspA and PspC and protection against colonization was observed, these results do not rule out the protective potential of these antigens as vaccines against pneumococcal infections.

The 2016-2017 epidemic of influenza A (H7N9) virus in China prompted concern that a genetic change may underlie increased virulence. Based on an evolutionary analysis of H7N9 viruses from all five outbreak waves, we find that additional subclades of the H7 and N9 genes have emerged. Our analysis indicates that H7N9 viruses inherited NP genes from co-circulating H7N9 instead of H9N2 viruses. Genotypic diversity among H7N9 viruses increased following wave I, peaked during wave III, and rapidly deceased thereafter with minimal diversity in wave V, suggesting that the viruses entered a relatively stable evolutionary stage. The ZJ11 genotype caused the majority of human infections in wave V. We suggest that the largest outbreak of wave V may be due to a constellation of genes rather than a single mutation. Therefore, continuous surveillance is necessary to minimize the threat of H7N9 viruses.

We collected 2768 Influenza-like illness emergency public health incidents from April 1, 2005 to November 30, 2013reported in the Emergency Public Reporting System. After screening by strict inclusion and exclusion criteria, there were 613 outbreaks analyzed with susceptible-exposed-infectious/asymptomatic-removed model in order to estimate the proportion of asymptomatic individuals (p) and the effective reproduction number (Rt). The relation between Rt and viral subtypes, regions, outbreak sites, populations, and seasons were analyzed. The mean values of p of different subtypes ranged from 0.09 to 0.15, but could be as high as up to 0.94. Different subtypes, provinces, regions, and sites of outbreak had statistically significantly different Rt. In particular, the southern region also manifested different Rt by affected population size and seasonality. Our results provide China and also the rest of the world a reference to understand characteristics of transmission and develop prevention and control strategies.

We demonstrate the synthesis of cuboid MAPbBr3 (MA=CH3NH3) microcrystals and subsequent conversion into open-box-like MAPb(Br(1-x)I(x))3 (0⩽x⩽1) microcrystals by anion exchange in MAI solution. During the substitution of Br(-) with I(-), the initial cuboid framework of MAPbBr3 crystals is retained. The preferential internal dissolution of MAPbBr3 due to the surface coverage and protection of MAPb(Br(1-x)I(x))3 induces voids inside the cuboid crystals, finally leading to open-box-like iodide-rich MAPb(Br(1-x)I(x))3. By controlling the degree of anion exchange, the intense light absorption of the product is able to be tuned in specific wavelengths throughout the visible range. This solution-phase anion exchange approach provides a synthetic strategy in designing sophisticated organolead halide perovskites structures as well as tuning the band gaps for further applications across a range of possible domains.

OBJECTIVE: To study the efficacy, safety, and feasibility of stent-assistant angioplasty (SAA) in the treatment of symptomatic vertebrobasilar artery stenosis in the elderly. METHODS: SAA was performed in 26 elderly patients with symptomatic vertebrobasilar artery stenosis. The success rate, perioperative complications, and long-term effectiveness were evaluated. RESULTS: A total of 29 balloon expandable stents were implanted in these patients. The success ratio was 100%. The degree of stenosis decreased from 81.3 ± 8.8% to 3.7 ± 3.6% (p < 0.01). Complications were absent during the perioperative period. Follow-up was performed for seven to 36 months (median: 21.9 months). Two patients developed the recurrent symptoms of vertebrobasilar artery stenosis, and no cerebral ischemic events were noted in the remaining patients, suggesting a favorable outcome. CONCLUSION: SAA is a safe and effective strategy for the treatment of symptomatic vertebrobasilar artery stenosis in the elderly.
