RESUMEN

The analysis of survival of 311 patients after total laryngectomy due to cancer and conventional postoperative radiotherapy was performed. During irradiation in a part of patients were introduced interruptions in treatment and no related diseases. The gap in treatment was taken in account and for this factor all patients were divided into 3 groups; without gap in treatment (A), with short gap--below 7 days (B) and with long gap--over 7 days (C). All groups were comparable. It was concluded that the long gaps increase the failure in treatment for about 30%.

RESUMEN

Since the enhanced production of IL-10 by human bronchogenic carcinoma has already been documented, in the present study serum levels of IL-10 were measured serially in patients with lung cancer undergoing radiotherapy. Thirty-one full diagnosed cancer patients underwent the radiotherapy procedures. The interleukin-10 (IL-10) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) serum levels were measured before therapy and after 3, 6 and 12 months after therapy. The interleukins concentrations were evaluated using a solid phase sandwich Enzyme-Linked-Immuno-Sorbent-Assay (ELISA). In all patients the serum levels of IL-10 have been found elevated. Due to the treatment they progressively declined to almost normal ranges in responders, while they remained elevated in non-responders. Serum levels of interleukin-6 have been elevated in the majority of our patients. After 12 months observation they also decreased, mainly in patients responding to the treatment. No correlation between serum IL-10 and IL-6 level has been found. The importance of serum IL-6 determination in lung cancer patients monitoring has already been established. The present study shows, that in spite of still unclear role of IL-10 in the process of carcinogenesis, it may be considered as a prognostic factor in lung cancer.

RESUMEN

The results of radiotherapy with Co-60 and photon X9 MeV in 126 patients with non-small-cell lung cancer are presented. Complete remission was been in 5.5% of the subjects. Remission time ranged from 15 to 57 months. One year survival was been in 48.4% of the patients. Side effects induced by radiotherapy were not been. The rising incidence of lung cancer and the known limitations of surgical therapy imply that this type of therapy should be used more extensively.

RESUMEN

The analysis of 191 patients with primary tongue carcinoma treated in ENT Clinic of Medical Academy in Poznan during the years 1963-1987 was presented. Since 1983 there were the dramatic increase in patients number. The patients age was between 20 and 87. Statistically significant was the males number. The half of the patients were in their 6th decade of life. In the last 5 years period the patients were younger of mean 5 years. Their symptoms lasted about 4 months. The earliest was the tongue pain. Tobacco smokers and alcoholics predominated. The localizations were in general on the edge and on the basal part of the tongue. Histologically the most frequent was the planoepithelial cancer in the second clinical stage. The 5 years survival rate was about 20%.
