RESUMEN

PURPOSE: Considering the key roles and responsibilities of nurses in ensuring medication safety, it is necessary to understand nurses' competence in medication safety. Therefore, it was aimed to introduce a scale evaluating the medication safety competence of nurses into Turkish and to contribute to the literature by determining the medication safety competence levels of nurses. METHODS: A methodological and descriptive research design was utilised. The population consisted of nurses in Turkey, and the sample comprised 523 nurses who volunteered to participate. RESULTS: The content validity index of the scale was 0.98, and the scale showed a good fit (χ2/df = 3.00, RMSEA = 0.062). The Cronbach's alpha coefficient of the scale was 0.97, indicating high reliability. The mean score was 4.12, which was considered high. Participants who were 40 years old or above, married, and graduates of health vocational schools or postgraduate programs, along with those who had received medication safety training, had higher medication safety competence scores. CONCLUSION: This study presents strong evidence that the Turkish version of the Medication Safety Competency Scale is valid and reliable when administered to nurses. The participants in this study had high levels of medication safety competence.

RESUMEN

Background and Purpose: This study aims to develop a task performance scale and a contextual performance scale for clinical nurses and to test the scales psychometrically. Methods: This study was carried out in two phases in a private hospital group. During the first phase, the initial scales were developed, and then the validity and reliability of the scales were analyzed; 154 nurses participated in the second phase. Results: The task performance scale consisted of two factors (total variance explained: 75.87%); the contextual performance scale consisted of three factors (total variance explained: 74.05%). The content validity indexes of both scales were 0.99. The Cronbach's alpha coefficients of both scales were 0.98. The test-retest reliability and inter-rater agreement of the scales were also good. Conclusions: The scales can contribute to nursing literature and hospital managers in assessing the performance of clinical nurses.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Some patients are stigmatised as difficult patients by healthcare professionals. This phenomenon has great many negative consequences. The behaviours of healthcare professionals towards difficult patients are important. OBJECTIVE: To explore the behaviours of all healthcare professionals towards difficult patients. RESEARCH DESIGN: This study was based on a cross-sectional research design using structural equation modelling. PARTICIPANTS AND RESEARCH CONTEXT: Two hundred and fifty-four healthcare professionals were involved in the study in Turkey. 'Participant Information Form' and the 'Healthcare Professionals Behaviour Assessment Questionnaire For Difficult Patient' were used to collect data from participants. ETHICAL CONSIDERATION: Ethical approval was obtained from Gazi University Ethics Committee for the study. Informed consent of the participants in the study was taken and the confidentiality of the participants was ensured. FINDINGS: It was explored that the behaviours of healthcare professionals towards difficult patients were categorised into ethical, supportive and negative. The highest mean score was supportive behaviour and the least mean score was negative. According to structural equation modelling, the most important predictor of difficult encounters was an ethical dimension. One-unit increase in ethical behaviour contributed to 0.92 unit increase in positive patient behaviour. DISCUSSION: Patients generally are perceived as 'difficult patient' by the healthcare professionals, so the patients' treatment and care services are affected negatively due to healthcare professionals' negative beliefs and attitudes. The healthcare professionals should behave supportively towards difficult patients. CONCLUSION: Healthcare professionals should be aware of management strategies in dealing with difficult encounters. The behaviours of healthcare professionals should be improved in a positive way and awareness of ethical dimension of difficult encounters should be increased.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: Bullying behaviors experienced during nursing education negatively affect students, educators, quality of training, and patient care. The purpose of this study was to develop a valid, reliable, short, and comprehensive scale to measure the bullying behaviors of nursing students in the education environment. METHODS: The Bullying Behaviors in Nursing Education (BBNE) tool was developed by adapting the Workplace Psychological Violence Behaviors scale. The data were collected from 442 nursing students from April to May 2017. The BBNE was tested using structural equation modeling, and validity and reliability results were obtained. Moreover, complementary statistics were determined, and the violence behaviors experienced by nursing students were reported. RESULTS: The full BBNE scale, with 30 items and four factors, was not verified (χ2/df = 4.31); 12 items were excluded, and the modified structure with 18 items and four factors was verified (χ2/df = 2.60; root-mean-square error of approximation = .06). The scale's Cronbach's α coefficient is .88, and the structure reliability is .92. Twenty-five percent of the 442 students scored 1 or higher in the total scale, showing that they were subject to bullying behaviors. CONCLUSION: The BBNE scale can be used to measure the bullying behaviors of nursing students in the education environment. When such behaviors are identified, students can struggle on the personal and organization level. Providing a safer and comfortable education environment for nursing students who are the guarantee of the future of health care will positively affect the quality of education and patient care in parallel.
