Senna rugosa is a species found in the Cerrado and used in folk medicine as a vermifuge and in the treatment of poisonous snakebites accidents. In this work, we identified the main secondary metabolites present in ethanolic extracts of the leaves (ELSR) and roots (ERSR) of S. rugosa and evaluated the potential cytoprotective effect against cellular macromolecular damage, as well as the cytotoxic properties of the extracts on the K562 and Jurkat leukemic cell lines. The identification of metabolites was carried out by liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. The antioxidant activities were investigated by direct ABTSâ¢+ and DPPH⢠radical scavenging methods, protection against oxidative damage in proteins, and DNA. Cytotoxic properties were investigated against healthy cells, isolated from human peripheral blood (PBMC) and leukemic cell lines. The leaf extracts contained catechin, rutin, epigallocatechin derivatives, kaempferol glycosides, luteolin, and dimeric and trimeric procyanidins, while the root extract profile showed obtusichromoneside derivatives, 2-methoxystypandrone, stilbene derivatives, naphthopyranones, and flavanone derivatives. The extracts showed antioxidant activity, with an IC50 of 4.86 ± 0.51 µg/mL and 8.33 ± 0.90 µg/mL in the ABTS assay for ELSR and ERSR, respectively. Furthermore, in the DPPH⢠assay, the IC50 was 19.98 ± 1.96 µg/mL for ELSR and 13.37 ± 1.05 µg/mL for ERSR. The extracts protected macromolecules against oxidative damage at concentrations of 5 µg/mL. The cytotoxicity test against leukemic strains was observed after 24 and 48 h of treatment. After 48 h, results against the K562 cell line demonstrate an IC50 of 242.54 ± 2.38 µg/mL and 223.00 ± 2.34 µg/mL for ELSR and ERSR, respectively. While against the Jurkat cell line, these extracts showed an IC50 of 171.45 ± 2.25 µg/mL and 189.30 ± 2.27 µg/mL, respectively. The results pertaining to PBMC viability demonstrated that the extracts showed selectivity for the leukemic cell lines. Together, our results reveal that the leaves and roots of S. rugosa have completely distinct and complex chemical compositions and expand their significant pharmacological potential in oxidative stress and leukemia conditions.

Obesity is a pandemic disease characterized by lipid accumulation, increased proinflammatory cytokines, and reactive oxygen species. It is associated with the development of comorbidities that lead to death. Additionally, drug treatments developed to control obesity are insufficient and have a variety of adverse effects. Thus, the search for new anti-obesity therapies is necessary. Campomanesia adamantium is a species from the Brazilian Cerrado that has the potential to treat obesity, as described by the antihyperlipidemic activity of its roots. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the activity of the aqueous extract of C. adamantium leaves (AECa) on the control of reactive species in vitro, on lipid accumulation in adipocytes and Caenorhabditis elegans, and on the production of proinflammatory cytokines in adipocytes. The antioxidant capacity of AECa was observed by its action in scavenging DPPH⢠free radical, iron-reducing power, and inhibition of ß-carotene bleaching. AECa reduced lipid accumulation in preadipocytes and in C. elegans. Moreover, AECa reduced the production of the proinflammatory cytokines MCP-1, TNF-α, and IL-6 in adipocytes. In summary, the antioxidant activity and the ability of AECa to reduce the accumulation of lipids and proinflammatory cytokines indicate, for the first time, the anti-obesity potential of C. adamantium leaves.

INTRODUCTION: the obesity is defined as the excessive accumulation of fat in different areas of the body, a condition that causes damage to health and is a critical risk factor for various comorbidities. Bariatric surgery is the therapeutic option with the best results. METHODS: this is a retrospective descriptive study using data obtained from medical records from January 2018 to December 2020 on patients undergoing bariatric surgery. Statistical analysis used a significance level of p<0.05. RESULTS: 178 medical records were included, 77.5% of which were women. The average age was 35.7 years (± 9.5), 63.8% of the patients were from Imperatriz, 98.3% reported a sedentary lifestyle, 38.7% regular alcohol consumption and 13% smoking. The prevalence of Class III obesity (BMI≥40 kg/m²) was 53.3%. The most common comorbidities were hepatic steatosis (64.6%), type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) (40.5%) and hypertension (38.7%). The main type of surgery performed was Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) (89.3%). There was an association between median BMI and gender (p=0.008), with women showing higher values [43.4 (IQR 39.1 - 48.8)]. The mean BMI of patients who underwent RYGB was significantly higher compared to those who underwent vertical gastrectomy (VG) (p=0.009). There was a statistical association between DM2 (p=0.033) and depression (p=0.018) and the type of surgery performed. CONCLUSION: the clinical and epidemiological profile found showed a higher prevalence of females and individuals with Class III obesity. RYGB was the most commonly performed procedure, establishing an association with BMI and some of the patients' comorbidities.

CONTEXT: The botanical species Bauhinia guianensis Aublet (Leguminosae-Cercidoideae) is traditionally used in the Amazon for medicinal purposes. OBJECTIVE: The acute toxicity of the hydroethanolic extracts from B. guianensis leaves and stems (HELBg and HESBg) was evaluated in zebrafish (Danio rerio), with emphasis on the embryonic developmental stage and adult alterations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Extracts were analyzed on LC-DAD-MS/MS. Zebrafish eggs were inoculated individually with concentrations of HELBg and HESBg (0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1.0, and 1.5 µg/mL), observed for 96 h. Adult zebrafish were treated with a single oral dose (100, 200, 500, 1000, and 2000 mg/kg) of HELBg and HESBg, observed for 48 h. RESULTS: HELBg and HESBg analysis detected 55 compounds. Both extracts exhibited toxicity, including embryo coagulation at higher doses of HELBg and absence of heartbeats in embryos at all doses of HESBg. Behavioral variations were observed; tissue alterations in adult zebrafish were found at the highest doses, primarily in the liver, intestine, and kidneys because of HELBg and HESBg effects. The LD50 of HESBg was 1717 mg/kg, while HELBg exceeded the limit dose of 2000 mg/kg. CONCLUSIONS: The study on acute toxicity of B. guianensis extracts exhibits significant toxic potential, emphasizing effects on embryonic and adult zebrafish. The results suggest relative safety of the species preparations, encouraging further clinical trials on potential biological activities.

Understanding the intricate relationship between temperature and physiological processes in ectotherm vertebrates is crucial for predicting how these animals respond to environmental changes, including those associated with climate change. This is particularly relevant for the anurans, given their limited capacity for thermoregulation, particularly in larval stages. Herein, we investigated the capacity for thermal acclimatization in Thoropa taophora tadpoles, an endemic species in the Atlantic rainforest of Southeast Brazil, inhabiting distinct thermal environments. These semi-terrestrial tadpoles develop on rocky surfaces, with some populations inhabiting exposed regions near the marine coast where temperatures may reach up to 30°C in sunny conditions, while other populations occupy forested areas near waterfalls that maintain lower temperatures. We aimed to understand the effects of temperature on locomotor performance and on the activity of metabolic enzymes that support performance in tadpoles sampled in four different populations. Moreover, we measured several aspects of thermoregulation, including the critical thermal maximum (CTmax), the body temperature of activity (Tb), the preferred temperature (Tpref) and the effectiveness of thermoregulation (E). Despite differences in body size, tadpoles from warmer environments consistently demonstrated higher locomotor performance, with minimal or no acclimatization seen in other variables. Correlations between habitat temperature and biological endpoints underscore the significance of maximum locomotor performance in shaping physiological responses. Our results show how temperature can impact tadpole behavior and performance, without changes in many organismal measures of thermal acclimatization, providing insights into potential ecological implications, particularly in the context of climate change.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) stands as a prevalent global public health issue caused by deficiencies in the action of insulin and/or insulin production. In the liver, insulin plays an important role by inhibiting hepatic glucose production and stimulating glycogen storage, thereby contributing to blood glucose regulation. Kaempferitrin (KP) and kaempferol (KM), flavonoids found in Bauhinia forficata, exhibit insulin-mimetic properties, showing promise in managing T2DM. In this study, we aimed to assess the potential of these compounds in modulating the insulin signaling pathway and/or glucose metabolism. Cell viability assays confirmed the non-cytotoxic nature of both compounds toward HepG2 cells at the concentrations and times evaluated. Theoretical molecular docking studies revealed that KM had the best docking pose with the IR ß subunit when compared to the KP. Moreover, Langmuir monolayer evaluation indicated molecular incorporation for both KM and KP. Specifically, KM exhibited the capability to increase AKT phosphorylation, a key kinase in insulin signaling, regardless of insulin receptor (IR) activation. Notably, KM showed an additional synergistic effect with insulin in activating AKT. In conclusion, our findings suggest the potential of KM as a promising compound for stimulating AKT activation, thereby influencing energy metabolism in T2DM.

There is robust evidence to support the relationship between spirituality and mental health, but the mechanisms of this association are not well-understood. The existential meaning provided by spirituality may be one of these mechanisms. This was the central theme of Viktor Frankl's psychology, which he explained using the notion of the spiritual unconscious. Thus, we sought to explain how Frankl understands this spiritual unconscious and the two pieces of evidence he presents for its existence: the phenomenological description of responsible action and the analysis of dreams. Lastly, we discuss his contribution to the current understanding of the relationship between having an overarching purpose and/or religious meaning and improvement in mental health.

We tested in the present study the hypothesis that supplementation with long-acting P4 (iP4) at different times of the initial dioestrus improves pregnancy rates in dairy and beef recipients submitted to fixed-time embryo transfer (FTET). Recipients from commercial farms had their oestrous cycle synchronized with an E2/P4-based protocol in three experiments (Exp. 1 to 3). In Exp. 1, dairy heifers (n = 76) and cows (n = 104) were randomly assigned to two experimental groups: the control group (n = 89) and the iP4D4 group (n = 91). For Exps. 2 and 3, suckled beef recipients were used. In Exp. 2, recipients were assigned to two experimental groups: Control group (n = 147) and iP4D7 group (n = 144); whereas in Exp. 3, recipients were randomly assigned to three experimental groups: Control group (n = 85), iP4-D4 group (n = 86) and iP4D7 group (n = 81). Recipients in the iP4D4 and iP4-D7 groups received an i.m. administration of 150 mg iP4, on D4 or D7 (D0 was the day of expected oestrus). On D7, all recipients were evaluated by transrectal ultrasonography and those that had a CL received a fresh or vitrified in vitro-produced embryo. In Exp. 2 and 3, the CL area was also determined by ultrasonography at the time of FTET. The pregnancy diagnosis was performed at 30 days in Exp. 1, 57 days in Exp. 2, and between 40 and 72 days of pregnancy in Exp. 3. In Exp. 1, the pregnancy rate did not differ (p > .1) between the Control group (38.2% [34/89]) and iP4D4 group (49.5% [45/91]); yet, a parity effect indicated a greater (p < .05) pregnancy rate in heifers (57.9% [44/76]) than cows (30.8% [32/104]). In Exp. 2, the pregnancy rate was greater (p < .05) in the iP4D7 group (45.0% [65/144]) than in the Control group (34.0% [50/147]). Also, a greater (p = .08) pregnancy rate was observed for recipients with a small CL (≤2.75 cm2 ) that were treated with iP4 on the day of FTET than the control recipients (46.4% [32/69] vs. 32.6% [28/86]). In Exp. 3, no significant effects (p > .1) of the treatment group or CL size were detected on pregnancy rates at days 30 and 60. In conclusion, the beneficial effects of iP4 supplementation at early dioestrus on pregnancy maintenance may vary according to the experimental conditions, but its use at the time of FTET can be used as an alternative to enhance the fertility of beef recipients in challenging conditions in commercial herds.

INTRODUCTION: Bilateral acute iris transillumination (BAIT) is a relatively new syndrome whose etiopathogenesis is still not fully understood. It is characterized by acute bilateral onset of intense pigment dispersion in the anterior chamber, iris depigmentation with severe transillumination defects, accentuated pigment deposition in the angle, and elevated intraocular pressure (IOP). In literature, the first case was of bilateral acute iris depigmentation (BADI) reported in 2004 in a 77-year-old woman. In 2019, Perone et al. published a review about BAIT syndrome. They reported a total of 79 cases have been published up that date, mainly in Europe and especially in Turkey and Belgium. The majority of reported cases were of bilateral acute iris depigmentation (BADI). BAIT syndrome might be mainly confused with acute iridocyclitis, acute primary angle-closure (APAC) and pigment dispersion syndrome (PDS). In relation to BAIT, controversies still exist regarding the etiology being the differential diagnosis of paramount importance for adequate treatment. PURPOSE: To report a case of BAIT syndrome associated to refractory glaucoma and to discuss the differential diagnosis based on clinical, OCT and UBM findings. METHODS: We present a case of BAIT syndrome in which clinical, OCT and UBM findings have pointed out the similarities and, mainly the diagnosis differences with other ocular diseases. CONCLUSIONS: BAIT syndrome with accentuated IOP rise must be differentiated of other ocular diseases. It requires urgent clinical therapy and/or surgical management as occurred in the present case for avoiding structural damage in OCT and visual field loss. OCT and UBM are critical for early recognition, differential diagnosis and management.

In this paper, we investigate whether skin color is a source of inequality in women's health by exploring the longitudinal framework of the PCSVDFMulher survey in Northeast Brazil. Specifically, we measure the skin color gradient in women's general and mental health, as well as in showing health risk behavior. We find that darker-skinned women show poorer mental health outcomes and a higher likelihood of drinking and smoking more frequently than their lighter-skinned counterparts. The skin color gradient is persistent and systematic, even when modeling different sources of unobserved heterogeneity and accounting for the existing socioeconomic inequalities and racial identity. We also find that racial identity is an important source of heterogeneous responses of women's health to skin tone.

RESUMO Introdução: a obesidade é definida pelo acúmulo excessivo de gordura em diferentes regiões corporais, condição que acarreta prejuízos à saúde e constitui fator de risco para diversas comorbidades. A cirurgia bariátrica é a opção terapêutica com melhores resultados para o seu tratamento. Métodos: estudo retrospectivo descritivo realizado com dados obtidos de prontuários médicos do período de janeiro/2018 a dezembro/2020, relacionados a pacientes submetidos à cirurgia bariátrica. As análises estatísticas realizadas adotaram nível de significância p<0,05. Resultados: foram incluídos 178 prontuários, sendo 77,5% de mulheres. A média de idade foi de 35,7 anos (± 9,5), 63,8% dos pacientes eram procedentes de Imperatriz, 98,3% relataram sedentarismo, 38,7% consumo regular de álcool e 13% tabagismo. A prevalência de obesidade grau III (IMC≥40 kg/m²) foi de 53,3%. As comorbidades mais relacionadas foram esteatose hepática (64,6%), diabetes mellitus tipo 2 (DM2) (40,5%) e hipertensão arterial (38,7%). O principal tipo de cirurgia realizada foi o by-pass gástrico em Y de Roux (BGYR) (89,3%). Observou-se associação entre a mediana de IMC e o sexo (p=0,008), com as mulheres apresentando maiores valores [43,4 (IIQ 39,1 - 48,8)]. A média de IMC dos pacientes submetidos ao BGYR foi significativamente maior comparado aos que realizaram gastrectomia vertical (GV) (p=0,009). Houve associação estatística entre o DM2 (p=0,033) e a depressão (p=0,018) com o tipo de cirurgia realizada. Conclusão: o perfil clínico-epidemiológico encontrado evidenciou maior prevalência do sexo feminino e de indivíduos com obesidade grau III. O BGYR foi o procedimento mais realizado, estabelecendo associação com IMC e algumas comorbidades apresentadas pelos pacientes.

There are several Amazonian plant species with potential pharmacological validation for the treatment of acute kidney injury, a condition in which the kidneys are unable to adequately filter the blood, resulting in the accumulation of toxins and waste in the body. Scientific production on plant compounds capable of preventing or attenuating acute kidney injury-caused by several factors, including ischemia, toxins, and inflammation-has shown promising results in animal models of acute kidney injury and some preliminary studies in humans. Despite the popular use of Amazonian plant species for kidney disorders, further pharmacological studies are needed to identify active compounds and subsequently conduct more complex preclinical trials. This article is a brief review of phytocompounds with potential nephroprotective effects against acute kidney injury (AKI). The classes of Amazonian plant compounds with significant biological activity most evident in the consulted literature were alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, steroids, and terpenoids. An expressive phytochemical and pharmacological relevance of the studied species was identified, although with insufficiently explored potential, mainly in the face of AKI, a clinical condition with high morbidity and mortality.

Dyslipidemia presents high levels of serum cholesterol and is characterized as a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, especially for the development of atherosclerosis. E. oleracea oil (OFEO), A. esculentus oil (OFAE), B. orellana oil (OFBO), and Chronic SM® granules (CHR) are rich in bioactive compounds with the potential to treat changes in lipid metabolism. This study investigated the effects of treatments with oils from A. esculentus, E. oleracea, B. orellana, and Chronic SM® on Cocos nucifera L. saturated-fat-induced dyslipidemia. The chromatographic profile showed the majority presence of unsaturated fatty acids in the tested oils. The quantification of tocotrienols and geranylgeraniol in OFBO and CHR was obtained. Treatments with OFEO, OFAE, OFBO, and CHR were able to significantly reduce glycemia, as well as hypertriglyceridemia, total cholesterol, and LDL-cholesterol, besides increasing HDL-cholesterol. The treatments inhibited the formation of atheromatous plaques in the vascular endothelium of the treated rats. The obtained results suggest that the OFEO, OFAE, OFBO, and CHR exhibit antidyslipidemic effects and antiatherogenic activity.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Accurate determination of glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is crucial for selection of kidney donors. Nuclear medicine methods are considered accurate in measuring GFR but are not always easily available. The four-variable Modification of Diet in Renal Disease (MDRD4), Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-EPI), and Full Age Spectrum (FAS) formulas are common equations for estimating GFR and are recommended for initial assessment of kidney donors. The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of these GFR estimation equations compared with technetium-99m diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid ([99mTc]Tc-DTPA) clearance. Methods: We compared GFR estimation by [99mTc]Tc-DTPA clearance using a two-blood sample method with estimation by MDRD4, CKD-EPI, and FAS creatinine-based equations in a population of healthy potential kidney donors. Results: A total of 195 potential kidney donors (68.2% female; mean age 49 years, range 21-75 years) were included in this study. Mean [99mTc]Tc-DTPA measured GFR (mGFR) was 101.5 ± 19.1 mL/min/1.73 m2. All three equations underestimated the GFR value measured by [99mTc]Tc-DTPA (MDRD4: -11.5 ± 18.8 mL/min/1.73 m2; CKD-EPI: -5.0 ± 17.4 mL/min/1.73 m2; FAS: -8.3 ± 17.4 mL/min/1.73 m2). Accuracy within 30% and 10% of the measured GFR value was highest for CKD-EPI. Conclusion: The CKD-EPI equation showed better performance in estimating GFR in healthy potential kidney donors, proving to be a more accurate tool in the initial assessment of kidney donors. However, creatinine-based equations tended to underestimate kidney function. Therefore, GFR should be confirmed by another method in potential kidney donors.
RESUMO Introdução: Determinar precisamente a taxa de filtração glomerular (TFG) é crucial para seleção de doadores de rim. Métodos de medicina nuclear são considerados precisos na medição da TFG, mas nem sempre estão facilmente disponíveis. As fórmulas Modification of Diet in Renal Disease de 4 variáveis (MDRD4), Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-EPI), e Full Age Spectrum (FAS) são equações comuns para estimar a TFG, sendo recomendadas para avaliação inicial dos doadores. Este estudo visou avaliar o desempenho destas equações de estimativa da TFG em comparação com o clearance do tecnécio-99m-ácido dietilenotriaminopentacético ([99mTc]Tc-DTPA). Métodos: Comparamos a TFG por clearance de [99mTc]Tc-DTPA usando um método com duas amostras de sangue com estimativa da TFG pelas equações MDRD4, CKD-EPI e FAS baseadas em creatinina em uma população de potenciais doadores saudáveis. Resultados: Incluiu-se 195 potenciais doadores de rim (68,2% mulheres; idade média de 49 anos, intervalo 21-75 anos). A TFG média medida por [99mTc]Tc-DTPA foi 101,5 ± 19,1 mL/min/1,73m2. As três equações subestimaram o valor da TFG medida por [99mTc]Tc-DTPA (MDRD4: -11,5 ± 18,8 mL/min/1,73 m2; CKD-EPI: -5,0 ± 17,4 mL/min/1,73 m2; FAS: -8,3 ± 17,4 mL/min/1,73 m2). A precisão dentro de 30% e 10% do valor da TFG medida foi maior para CKD-EPI. Conclusão: A equação CKD-EPI mostrou melhor desempenho na estimativa da TFG em potenciais doadores de rim saudáveis, revelando-se uma ferramenta mais precisa na avaliação inicial dos doadores. Entretanto, equações baseadas em creatinina tendem a subestimar a função renal. Portanto, a TFG deve ser confirmada por outro método em potenciais doadores.

COVID-19 can converge with the pro-inflammatory immunoregulatory mechanisms of chronic lung diseases. Given the disorders inherent to lung transplantation and the inexistence of other definitive therapeutic alternatives, Adipose tissue-derived Stem Cells (ASCs) presented themselves as a therapeutic hope. The purpose of this review is to assess the basis for the potential use of ASCs in lung diseases unresponsive to conventional therapy, relating to their possible use in COVID-19 ARDS. 35 studies comprised this review, 14 being narrative reviews, 19 preclinical trials and two proofs of concept. COVID-19 can converge with the pro-inflammatory immunoregulatory mechanisms of chronic lung diseases. In view of the disorders inherent to lung transplantation and the inexistence of definitive therapeutic alternatives, Adipose tissue-derived Stem Cells (ASCs) presented themselves as a therapeutic hope. Its detailed reading indicated the absence of serious adverse effects and toxicity to the administration of ASCs and suggested possible effectiveness in reducing lung damage, in addition to promoting the recovery of leukocytes and lymphocytes with its immunomodulatory and anti-apoptotic effects. The revised clinical data suggests optimism in the applicability of ASCs in other immunoinflammatory diseases and in severe COVID-19 ARDS. However, further studies are needed to develop a consensus on the methods of collection of ASCs, the ideal dosage schedule, the most effective time and route of administration, as well as on the definition of indications for the administration of ASCs in cases of COVID-19 for conducting clinical trials in near future.

The parasitoid Telenomus podisi Ashmead, 1893 is used in biological control programs in Brazil against eggs of Euschistus heros (Fabricius, 1798), a key pest of soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merr. To optimize the mass production of parasitoids, artificial diets and storage of host eggs at low temperatures have been developed; however, direct comparisons of the effects of these conditions have not occurred. We assessed a double factorial arrangement composed of six treatments (fresh or cryopreserved E. heros eggs from adults fed on natural or two artificial diets). We evaluated the biological characteristics and parasitism capacity of T. podisi produced from these treatments across seven temperatures. The thermal range between 21 and 30 °C resulted in satisfactory daily parasitism in all treatments tested, with an inverse relationship between temperature and female survival. The best parasitoid biological parameters were found between 21 and 27 °C, where all tested diets supported T. podisi development, with the best results from artificial diets. Fresh eggs and those frozen in liquid nitrogen and stored at -196 °C until use supported parasitoid development. These results suggest that the best method to mass rear T. podisi is to use artificial diets to rear E. heros and store eggs until needed, and then rear parasitoids at 24 °C.

The brown stink bug, Euschistus heros (Fabricius, 1798) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), is one of the most abundant soybean stink bug pests in Brazil. Temperature is a key factor that affects its development and reproduction, and fluctuating temperatures may impact the development and reproduction of E. heros differently from those under constant temperatures. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of constant and fluctuating temperature on the biological characteristics of E. heros in three successive generations. Treatments consisted of six constant temperatures (19 °C, 22 °C, 25 °C, 28 °C, 31 °C and 34 °C) and four fluctuating temperatures (25:21 °C, 28:24 °C, 31:27 °C, and 34:30 °C) evaluated for three successive generations. Second-stage nymphs were evaluated daily, and after they reached the adult stage, they were separated by sex, and the individual weight (mg) and pronotum size (mm) were recorded. After pair formation, eggs were collected to evaluate the pre-oviposition period, total number of eggs, and egg viability. The duration of the nymphal stage was reduced with an increase in both constant and fluctuating temperatures; however, at constant temperatures of 19 °C, 31 °C and 34 °C and fluctuating temperatures of 28:24 °C, there was no reproduction in adults. The base temperature and total degree day requirement for nymphal development were 15.5 °C and 197.4 dd, respectively. Pre-oviposition period (d), number of eggs per female, and viability of eggs (%) were affected by temperature across the generations. The multiple decrement life table analysis revealed that mortality was highest during the molting of the second-stage nymphs. These findings have important implications for E. heros' laboratory mass-rearing programs and for its management in fields.

Endophytic fungi are those that present part of their life cycle in healthy tissues of different plant hosts in symbiosis without causing harm. At the same time, fungus-plant symbiosis makes it possible for microorganisms to synthesize their own bioactive secondary metabolites while in the stationary stage. To accomplish this, the endophytic fungus Trichoderma asperellum was isolated from Bertholletia excelsa (Brazil nut) almonds. The fungus was cultivated and extracted with ethyl acetate, obtaining AM07Ac. Then, using HPTLC (High-performance thin-layer chromatography) and nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR), ß-amyrin, kaempferol, and brucine were identified as major compounds. Further in vivo assays in zebrafish demonstrated the activity of AM07Ac on melanogenesis by producing a concentration-response inhibitory effect, which, through an in silico study, proved to be related to the noted major compounds known to inhibit tyrosinase activity. The inhibition of tyrosinase prevents melanin accumulation in skin. Therefore, these results imply the importance of investigating microorganisms and their pharmacological activities, in particular the endophytic fungus Trichoderma asperellum as a generator of active metabolites for melanogenesis modulation.
