RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To examine the feasibility and acceptability of a 6-week peer-based walking intervention for adults with moderate-to-severe TBI with telehealth supports. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Pre-post feasibility trial with 18 community-dwelling adults (10 men; 8 women) with moderate-to-severe TBI aged 21-61 years (M = 40.6, SD = 11.3). Feasibility outcomes included participation, attrition, safety across 12 90-minute sessions, and telehealth platform quality. Acceptability outcomes included program satisfaction. Exploratory outcomes included daily step count with activity trackers and pre-post intervention questionnaires (mood, leisure satisfaction, exercise self-efficacy, quality of life) through video conferencing. RESULTS: 15/18 (83%) participants completed ≥ 9 sessions (75%). Three participants were lost to attrition. No major adverse events reported. Minor events included fatigue and muscle soreness. Participants reported high satisfaction (M = 9.2/10, SD = 0.9). Average weekly steps per day rose from 10,011 to 11,177 steps (12%). Three participants' step count data were not included due to tremors or forgetting to wear the device (≥ 9 days). One major and several minor connectivity problems occurred. Wilcoxon Signed Ranks tests identified a significant change in negative affect (p < 0.002). CONCLUSIONS: Findings support the feasibility and acceptability of a 6-week peer-based walking intervention with telehealth supports for our sample.

It was feasible and acceptable for our sample of adults with moderate-to-severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) to engage in a peer-based walking program during unforeseen circumstances.A peer-based walking group program may be a method of promoting health-related outcomes and physical activity for adults with moderate-to-severe TBI.Telehealth supports may be used to adapt a fitness center-based physical activity program for adults with TBI to an outdoor community context.

RESUMEN

Cutout and dissection data from 265 carcasses were used to study the impact of the lean yield definition on their ability to discriminate lean carcasses from fat carcasses. The same data were used to evaluate the relationship between the various definitions of lean yield, such as the lean yield predicted by the Destron optical probe (LYDESTRON), the saleable meat yield (SMY), the Canadian lean yield (LY2000) and the lean meat percentage (TVM), and the market carcass value. Based on the highest number of carcasses assigned to the extreme grades (leaner and fatter), the TVM had the greatest discriminating capability based on carcass leanness. The correlation coefficients obtained between market carcass value and LYDESTRON, SMY, LY2000 and TVM were 0.14, 0.54, 0.36 and 0.23, respectively. These weak correlations demonstrate that lean yield alone does not adequately explain the variation in market value between carcasses. Lean yield therefore cannot be used to estimate market value independently of the definition used.

RESUMEN

Carcinoma of the colon is a serious complication of chronic ulcerative colitis (CUC), a disease of unknown etiology. Peripheral blood lymphocytes from nine patients with CUC showed deficient repair of radiation-induced DNA damage compared with a group of healthy controls. DNA repair was measured indirectly by quantifying chromatid breaks after irradiation of cells with X-rays or ultraviolet during G2 phase of the cell cycle. Such breaks represent unrepaired DNA strand breaks that may arise directly from the damaging agent or indirectly during repair processes. Two types of deficiency were revealed. One was an abnormally high frequency of chromatid breaks after G2-phase X-irradiation. These may reflect deficient strand-break repair. The second deficiency was manifest as a low frequency of breaks not increased by addition of the DNA repair inhibitor araC. This low frequency apparently results from negligible incision activity. Deficient DNA repair in CUC may thus be a requisite predisposing factor for genomic instability and the potential development of colon carcinoma.

RESUMEN

Composite can be cured extraorally to fabricate indirect or direct/indirect restorations. These restorations are bonded to the tooth with a dual-cure resin cement. This study evaluated various methods for treating the surface of an indirect glass-filled composite to improve its bond to enamel. The methods tested were air abrasion (sandblasting), hydrofluoric (HF) acid etching, silanation, and combinations of these techniques. Shear bond strengths were measured for thermocycled and non-thermocycled specimens. Air abrasion, followed by silanation, provided the strongest and most consistent bonds. Etching with 9.6% HF gel decreased the bond strengths obtained by air abrasion. HF alone produced the weakest bonds, with most failures occurring adhesively between the indirect composite and the resin cement.

RESUMEN

Diastema closure by simple direct techniques has to take advantage of modern photo-cure systems. This paper reviews the basic concepts of diastema closure and describes a technique that does not necessitate the use a conventional matrix.

RESUMEN

For 18 years, the acid-etched bridge has been put to good use. Clinical observations over this period of time allow us to take a step back and review this conservative technique. Using the results of clinical research, this article aims to evaluate the performance and basic principles relative to the acid-etched bridge. The primary and secondary causes of debonding are also identified.

RESUMEN

Six patients with restless legs syndrome (RLS) and periodic movements during sleep (PMS) received placebo or L-dopa in a double-blind study. We recorded patients for 36 consecutive hours in the sleep laboratory during a baseline investigation and at the end of each treatment period. Daily evening questionnaires and a suggested immobilization test (SIT) performed at bedtime on each recording night documented the effect of L-dopa in RLS. A nocturnal EMG recording of the anterior tibialis muscles revealed the effect of L-dopa on PMS. L-Dopa proved effective in treating both RLS and PMS. Although not present in every patient, leg movements recorded during the SIT exhibited a clear periodicity. These observations support the hypothesis that RLS and PMS are two manifestations of the same central sensorimotor disorder.
