RESUMEN

A double-blind experiment with 50 adults was conducted to replicate a finding that proximity to sugar reduces human grip strength. Grip strength of the dominant hand was measured by a chart-recording hand dynamometer for 12 trials. For half of the trials, the subject held an opaque, sealed bottle containing sugar; for half of the trials, the subject held a control bottle of equal weight containing sand. Statistical analysis indicated no significant effect of held substance upon grip strength.

RESUMEN

Hooded rats were trained to choose the larger of two circles in order to obtain a liquid reward. Recipients of brain extract from these trained donors showed a significant preference for an even larger circle when given a nonreinforced test for several days after the injection of extract. The substrate for relational learning may be biochemically transferred.

RESUMEN

Extracts rich in RNA were prepared from the brains of goldfish that had acquired and then extinguished a light-signaled avoidance to shock in an aquatic shuttle-box. Recipient fish injected intracranially with such extracts extinguished the response significantly faster than those injected with extracts prepared from brains of naive donors.

RESUMEN

Male Siamese fighting fish exhibit stereotyped aggression reactions to their mirror reflections. When distinctive neutral stimuli (flickering colored lights) were repeatedly associated with drug-potentiated aggression (morphine sulfate) and drug-depressed aggression (phenergan), the stimuli came to exert specific stimulus control over aggressive display even after the drugs were discontinued.
