RESUMEN

Pseudomonas denitrificans pre-cultured (revived from agar plates) under varying conditions (nitrate absent or present; dissolved oxygen absent or present) was subsequently grown aerobically with or without nitrate present, and finally exposed to anoxic conditions (i.e., aeration stopped and dissolved oxygen stripped from solution). The occurrence and length of diauxic lags following transition from aerobic to anoxic conditions were affected strongly by the nitrate and oxygen exposure history of the biomass.

RESUMEN

The periodic income and expenditure accounts produced at the hospital and departmental level enable successful short term management, but, in the long run do not help remove tensions between health care demand and limited resources, nor do they enable optimal medical planning within the limited financial resources. We are trying to estabilish disease category costs based on case mixing according to diagnostic categories (diagnosis related groups, DRG, or health care resource groups, HRG) and calculation of hospital standard product costs, e.g., radiology cost, preoperative nursing cost etc. The average DRG cost is composed of standard product costs plus any costs specific to a diagnostic category. As an example, current costing procedure for hip artheroplasty in the University Hospital Center Zagreb is compared to the management accounting approach based on British Health Care Resource experience. The knowledge of disease category costs based on management accounting requirements facilitates the implementation of medical programs within the given financial resources and devolves managerial responsibility closer to the clinical level where medical decisions take place.

RESUMEN

Epidemical studies of fibular ligament lesions of the ankle joint lateral ligamentous lesions at the ankle joint are one of the most accidental injuries. It is necessary to bestow great care on prevention and therapy to avoid after effects. We report about 150 cases of acute injuries of the fibular ligament lesions of the ankle joint in 1987 treated by surgery and followed up to explore the cause of injury, its dimensions, the groups of patients and time of accident. Corresponding to literature sports activities were mostly the reason of accidents followed by casional accidents and industrial accidents. Mainly young people suffered from this injury preferring men. The part of reruptures was 14%. In 61.3% both Lig. fibulotal. ant. and Lig. fibulocalc. were ruptured followed by isolated rupture of the Lig. fibulotal.ant. in 32.7% of the cases.

RESUMEN

Members of an interdisciplinary design group, funded to conduct ongoing research in state psychiatric facilities, developed a process by which a seven-year-old facility for geriatric patients could be better adapted to meet users' and program needs. The facility, considered good by many standards, had been planned on a "motel model"more suitable for transient occupancy than for providing opportunities for interaction, communication, stimulation, and challenging roles. Randomly selected residents and staff were involved in making decisions about design changes, which focused on rearranging and remodeling day-rooms to increase interaction. The controlled research design, involving baseline and follow-up evaluations, indicated that measurable, positive changes in residents' behavior occurred, especially among residents who took part in decision-making about the environmental changes.
