RESUMEN
The teardrop shadow of the pelvis is poorly understood and as a result its clinical significance is not appreciated. The structure responsible for this shadow was pinpointed by removing sections from the hemipelvis of an anatomic specimen with an electric saw. This structure is located in the anteroinferior portion of the acetabular fossa at the acetabular notch and consists of cortical and medullary bone contributed primarily from the ischium with a much smaller contribution from the superior pubic ramus. The normal and abnormal appearances of the teardrop shadow of the acetabulum of three patients were demonstrated on both plain radiographs and computed tomographic (CT) scans.

This report describes a simplified anatomic approach to computerized tomography of the pelvis. This approach is based on the recognition of certain key features or landmarks in ten characteristic sections. These sections can be obtained routinely by using the L5 vertebral body as an initial reference point and then scanning sequentially at two centimeter intervals. These ten sections offer a relatively complete overview of the pelvis in most patients, and can serve, therefore, as a protocol for rapid screening.

Bone scans were obtained in 100 patients with carcinoma of the cervix in order to search for occult skeletal metastases. Scans revealed metastases in 4 patients with advanced stages of disease, but the scans in 79 patients with Stage 0, I or II disease were negative. The scans in 14 patients showed renal asymmetry; 11 of these had obstructive uropathy due to tumor invasion or radiation therapy. Bone scanning does not seem warranted as a screening test in asymptomatic patients with Stage 0, I, or II carcinoma. If the test is done, renal symmetry should be carefully evaluated.

During a 17-year period, 33 injuries produced radiographic abnormalities in 26 members of a professional football team. Sites of injury were correlated with playing position and protective equipment worn at the time of injury. Fractures of multiple transverse processes of the lumbar spine are reported in offensive halfbacks and offensive ends. Two linebackers and one center sustained fractures of the mid-forearm. Several related reports of the morbidity and mortality of football injuries are also discussed.

The radiographs and medical records of 29 professional basebell players from several teams were reviewed. Each player had been selected because of radiographic abnormalities. Abduction views of the shoulder were employed in pitchers and outfielders who complained of shoulder pain. Upper extremity abnormalities predominated and accounted for 22 injuries including avulsion injuries of the origin of the long head of the triceps at the infraglenoid tubercle of the scapula and traction injuries at the origin of the pronator muscles at the medial epicondyle of the humerus. Trauma to the lower extremities was caused by collision with a fixed barrier in one man and by running and sliding in 13 others.

Two patients with unusual features of Paget's disease are reported. In one patient a circumferential focal and periosteally based mass of Paget's disease presented as a mass lesion superimposed on the sclerotic phase of Paget's disease in the distal femur. Biopsy of the mass showed Paget's disease without neoplasia. The mass has remained unchanged roentgenographically in a 2 year period. In a second patient, a lesion occurred in the mid-portion of the tibia and showed features of the early and radiolucent phase of Paget's disease. In a 4 year period, the lesion has progressed to a more sclerotic phase and to occupy the proximal end of the tibia as well as its mid and lower portions.
