RESUMEN

Osteochondroma is a hamartomatous proliferation of cartilaginous tissue, which is the most common benign tumor of the long bones, but is relatively rare in the maxillofacial region. Most cases of mandibular condylar osteochondroma manifest with facial asymmetry or malocclusion with limited temporomandibular joint movements. Several approaches for management of this lesion have been proposed, as conservative condylectomy technique. This procedure has been suggested a valid approach to minimize facial asymmetry, contributing to the recovery of occlusion associated with no local tumor recurrence, and without condylar reconstruction procedure. Therefore, this article aims to describe a clinical report of a true osteochondroma of the mandibular condyle in a 35-year-old patient who was successfully treated using conservative condylectomy procedure.

The β-TCP has been used in bone grafting surgery, especially in the upper regions of the maxilla in order to facilitate the prosthetic rehabilitation with implants. The aim of this study is to evaluate the healing of a biomaterial-based beta tri calcium phosphate, β-TC in sinus lifting of rabbits, using histological, histomorphometric and immunohistochemistry. Twenty Albinus rabbits underwent surgery to the bilateral maxillary sinus lift, where the right maxillary sinus was filled with blood clot and the left by β-TCP. After periods of 3, 7, 15 and 45 days the animals were euthanized and their jaw removed for processing and histological, immunohistochemistry and histometric analysis. There was bone formation for both groups only from the period of 15 days. The Tukey statistical test was applied, and there was statistical difference (p <0.01) between the control group and the β-TCP group. The best index of bone formation was for the β-TCP group in period prescribed 45 days (33,011 ± 0.0294%) compared to the control group (30.502 ± 1.824%). There were also significant differences among groups in relation to the studied periods. Thus, we proved that the βTCP was a competent bone substitute in relation to bone formation and maintenance area, allowed for proper oral rehabilitation clinical defects...

RESUMEN

This study measured the flow rate, pH, and buffer capacity of saliva from children with Down syndrome aged 2-60 months. We compared 25 children with Down syndrome with 21 children without Down syndrome. The whole saliva was collected under slight suction and the pH and the buffer capacity were determined using a digital pHmeter. The buffer capacity was measured by titration with 0.01 N HCl. The Down syndrome group demonstrated higher buffer capacity than the control group in the pH ranges of 6.9-6.0, 5.9-5.0, and 4.9-4.0. The flow rate was low in the Down syndrome group. Boys from the Down syndrome group demonstrated higher buffer capacity in the pH ranges 6.9-6.0, 5.9-5.0, and 4.9-4.0 than controls, while girls from the Down syndrome group showed no difference compared with controls. Girls with Down syndrome demonstrated significant difference only in the range of pHi-pH 7.0. Conclusion. These data suggest that the Down syndrome persons present a better buffer capacity, supporting the results observed in several studies which found the low dental caries in persons with Down syndrome.
